I've wanted this fight since I saw Shin Godzilla.Especially seeing as the Big G was trying to pull an Israfel at the end.

You might want to deploy this to deal with Big G:

Behold the NERV Anti-G Weapon Shiryu Prototype Unit 01:

The figure damn near costs a kidney, but it exists.

Though Rei might object to its use:

"Cue the bus," Kaji said into his headset. "He's taken the bait."

"Cue the bus" he says... are they going to run the spy over?

Hit the guy with a vehicle, take him to the hospital while he's in no position to object, interrogate him there... seems legit:p

Yes, I do think the thought of Shinji stuck with Racing Heart would be hilarious.

I think that's the fourth way I've seen to spell/pronounce the name of that thing. Raising Heart (appears to be official), Raging Heart (seems to be fan-preferred), Razing Heart (seems appropriate), and now this...

Probably fine in Shinji's hands. Probably fine in A&T!Rei's hands. Asuka would have far too much "fun" with it. Keep away from ND!Rei at all costs.

Don't be silly. Obviously the bus, while looking identical to other buses running on that route and apparently with the usual kind of driver and passengers, but it's actually a special Section 2 bus, the driver and passengers are all Section 2 agents in disguise and instead of proceeding along the usual bus route, it will instead drive directly to a black site where the spy will be subjected to Enhanced Interrogation

I still wanna see Shinji accidentally an EVA out of the Geofront.
That almost happened during the series Zeruel fight, if the mag-launcher (I find it funny that they basically built rail-guns to launch their horrendously expensive war-machines) had sent them to the surface, rather than just the main Geofront surface.

I think Shinji might just up and give it to Asuka in exchange for her not going "pretty please blow up all the everything!"

I can very easily see Asuka being one of those girls who get excited by boom, and if Shinji has an Ammulate of Boom he's going to be like a catnip bag in a virgin-killing sweater holding lunch to poor Asuka. Remember, the redhead has no soul, and thus no guilt if she accidentally kills him mid snu-snu due to him being too damn attractive.

Update!....sort of.

This came out to only 833 words, since I didn't get nearly the time I wanted to work on it (I didn't even start until 2200), so I'm not officially numbering this one as an update or doing the usual art and such. I'll add some more to it and make the official update in a day or two. For now, as promised, a Friday update before I sleep!

@modigar, @Naughtilus, this is for you two. Kaji and Gendo cause some trouble for SEELE, and SEELE... notices.

"I spy with my little eye something that begins with…. S," Kaji muttered under his breath. His lips curled in a faint grin as he watched the street far below through the binoculars.

"What was that, sir?" the faint voice of the Section 2 squad tasked to him crackled in his earbud.

"I said, 'target in sight'," Kaji grinned. "I see someone oh-so-casually walking their way towards the dead drop."

At street level, the 'sucker' approached the fake dead drop Kaji had set up. A simple 'pickup ready' mark on a street lamp elsewhere and the city, and the trap was baited. Kaji had been waiting for a couple hours in his observation site in one of the office towers overwatching the spot, but the wait was worth it now. A nondescript man in a civilian shirt but NERV khaki pants casually walked up to the bus stop on the street below Kaji and took a seat on the bench. It was a minute or two before his hand wandered idly over the underside of the bench, palmed the slim envelope taped there, and slipped it into his shirt pocket.

"Cue the bus," Kaji said into his headset. "He's taken the bait."

"Yes, sir."

An apparently perfectly normal city bus came around the corner, empty, and pulled to a stop in front of the bus stop. The man got on without seeming to notice anything odd about the bus being empty. From the murmurs over the radio, he didn't seem to notice anything at all until the bus pulled into a warehouse just off the 'normal' route and several nice people in dark suits asked him to step out for a nice little chat about the entirely fake secret materials he'd just picked up.

Kaji was already most of the way down to the street level by the time their first catch was rolled up. He stuffed the headset and cables for the radio in his pocket, and sauntered out into the street smiling. "One down, and plenty more to fish for… Commander Ikari better be happy with this."

The NERV cafeteria was busy at lunch. Dozens of people coming and going, loud conversations swirling, trays and bowls banging on tables… the perfect sea of chaos to conceal any number of things you want lost in a crowd, such as document passes.

It was somewhere no one would notice you peeling the tape off the envelope attached to the underside of the seemingly random table in the back, or even you opening the papers covered in technical jargon and graphs to read them.

Not unless you were looking for them.

"Hi!"

Technician 2nd Class Hotaro Mizukawa jumped in his seat at the overly cheerful greeting from right behind him. He did manage not to guiltily try to hide the papers. He was a NERV Technician, why shouldn't he be reading them? He looked up at the man who'd spoken to him, who was already pulling up a chair to sit down across from him. "Er… hello?"

The roguish man with the ponytail and unshaved chin smiled sloppily at him. "Ryouji Kaji, UN Inspector to NERV. Can I ask what you're reading?"

Mizukawa tried not to sweat. "Um, just some technical documents related to my job. Nothing important. We're always behind, so I try to catch up at lunch."

The Inspector nodded, still smiling. "I'm pretty sure they're nothing important, yes. Mostly because I planted them there an hour ago, right after I left the 'dead drop ready' sign in the vending machine area on level 17. Those documents are pure fabrication, containing no actual intel value at all. Sorry about that."

Mizukawa tried and failed to conceal his growing nervousness. "I-I'm sorry? What?"

"You're a spy for SEELE, and you just took the bait. An innocent man wouldn't have picked up that envelope at all." The Inspector stood up. "Now, come with me. Section 2 wants to have a… quiet talk with you."

In a dark, empty room somewhere in Europe, a dozen holographic monoliths faced each other.

"Ikari is moving. He has removed half a dozen of our eyes and ears in NERV Headquarters this week. Inspector Kaji has been seen assisting," growled the one marked SEELE 06.

"Several of our couriers and data lines have been corrupted or shut down as well," added SEELE 08. "Ikari is moving sooner than expected."

"We anticipated sending Tabris would provoke him. We have contingencies for this," replied SEELE 03

"And it is time we activate one," rumbled the cold, harsh voice of SEELE 01. "One of the last reports we received before this confirmed our suspicions. Ikari has dabbled in matters he was ordered to leave alone. He has taken what was not his. It is time he is taught a lesson about obedience. Order our agent to terminate Ikari's asset. We will teach him regret."

"It will be done," said SEELE 02.

The monoliths faded away, and silence reigned.

A quiet talk, eh? And a final one as well, I suspect. I am not looking forward to SEELE's response to this, judging by the foreshadowing here.

Oh fuck.

Look, we all know that if Rei was going to die, our dynamic duo would steal Misato's guns and go on a rampage.

That would be the worst thing.

Given that they refer to Tabris by name earlier in the conversation but do not refer to the "agent" that way, and given some of the Kaworu-viewpoint scenes and his conversations... I'm pretty sure they don't have a straightforward means of contacting Kaworu in the first place.

Holy shit, you're going to have someone assassinate Rei.

If that's the case, I predict one of four options:

1) Rei III. Given that Rei seems to rely on memory backups to transfer between clones in A&T (judging from prior conversations with Ritsuko) and the last major backup we saw was after Zeruel, she stands to potentially lose quite a bit of development and/or memory. Most notably her entire relationship with Kaworu (which could be really bad for him), plus her unlocked memories of Lilith. She'd also be really pissed to find out she kissed both Shinji and Asuka and no longer remembers, that she had a great time at Asuka's birthday party and no longer remembers, that she learned to play the viola and no longer remembers that skill... Plus the activation of Rei III could tip off SEELE as to what she is. Hopefully Ritsuko thought to run at least a bare-bones memory scan while Rei was recuperating in the tank after the fight with Arael. Also hope she thought to keep a diary between memory backups -- it might even help her to recover "lost" memories.

2) Kaworu is near her, senses the attacker's observation, and takes the bullet for her, either with or without his AT-field. I'm guessing with the field -- SEELE knows what he is, and Gendo knows what he is. Could "out" him prematurely to Misato, Shinji, and Asuka, though.

3) Rei simply tanks the hit, thanks to her awakened abilities (either AT-field or regeneration). Assuming the would-be assassin lives to report this, Rei's nature gets outed to SEELE. Major Oh Shit moment for everybody involved -- Gendo's secret is revealed, SEELE discovers NERV has an asset they can't counter with anything less than the (presumably still incomplete) MP Eva series, and Rei potentially gets her true nature outed to Misato, Shinji, and Asuka.

4) Kaji is nearby at the time of the attempt on Rei's life, notices what's going on at the last minute, and sacrifices himself to save Rei. Kaji either dies, or Rei saves him with something she picked up from her Lilith memories.

By "agent", I wonder if they mean Kaworu. That could make things... interesting in the Chinese sense of the term.

He'll happily report back that he's eliminated Rei Ayanami, after helping her fake her death. Or he'll just tell them to go pound sand.

"Ikari's asset" could mean a lot of things, come to think of it. Rei is the main candidate, but Kaji is a contender too. They might (but probably don't) mean Shinji, even...

EDIT: Or Fuyutsuki.

As a counter to the grim tidings of SEELE's pronouncement, here's something amusing I stumbled across:
