Had Asuka aim for the Dummy Plugs or the cores, she almost certainly would won fight. The only reason she lost was because Fuyutsuki failed to inform her about the former and that the fact they had S2 engines.
She knew they were EVAs. She's supposed to be a geninus. She can figure out that the best way to "kill" an EVA is to attack the plug. Hell, she put her EVA's fist through at least two of them, she just chose not to aim for the plug, assuming that the MP-EVAs HAVE plugs, and not some other means of control.

When did Fuyutsuki, or indeed anyone, have the opportunity to contact Asuka between her waking up in the Entry Plug and the MP-Evas tearing her apart?

The insertion of the MP-Evas' plugs (distinctly marked 'Kaworu') prior to the carrier planes' releasing them, was shown in EoE.

Fuyutsuki was in the command centre. Asuka was in an EVA. So, uh... There should have been a comm channel.

(of course, that also means there should have been a comm channel to abducted EVA-01... hmmm...)

Pretty sure the control room was linked to her Eva - like always.

She also just woke from a coma after being psychologically destroyed and was running on happy endorphins from Kyoko. It's not really a state of mind for clear rationality and intelligence.

Do they have cross-dimensional signal technology?

???

The EVA never ends up in the Sea of LCL, and that's the only extradimensional whatever we get to see. At worst it ends up fused with GNR, before breaking free from her through her eye, but even that is not extradimensional.

But no, I was referring to what the command staff was calling EVA-01 getting abducted - the MP EVAs raising EVA-01 into the sky and exploiting it as Impact medium. Meanwhile, Shinji was inside the entire time.

Oh, right - thought you were referring to Leliel.

If I were someone with an uncharitable view of Yui, I'd hazard a guess she was blocking any communication attempt. Oh wait, I am, so I will.

None and she didn't ask anyone for information and may or may not have spent her comms to yell at how usless shinji is ...
Just before Misato died, she contacted Asuka and told her to destroy the MPE's and that Shinji would be joining her shortly.
Almost; as it was, Misato radioed in when she and Shinji had to leave her car and continue on foot. She told Asuka to just hold on, Shinji would be on his way as soon as she got him to his Eva.

Which, on closer examination, makes the perceived abandonment all the more glaring; maybe he didn't want to save her?

That, and it was nine-on-one so she was probably trying to cripple them and then finish them off later. It's not her fault she can't hurt them nine times as fast as they can heal.

Now hold on Lord Sovereign, I don't think that was the reason. I think he thought he wasn't worthy of saving her due to what he did before, and after Misato died, he tried to get in Unit-01 to help, but found it covered in bakelite and lost hope.

'Perceived' is the keyword here — from Asuka's perspective, it indeed looks like him not taking the field to save her was deliberate instead of it being a result of despair.

You know, I've heard this before, and it never really made sense. In the series Evas have often been mission killed with regular injuries and didn't get back up until weeks' worth of tissue regeneration in their hangar. Asuka had no reason to suspect the MP Evas would be capable of instantly healing that kind of damage.

And since lack of communication is a theme with NGE, perception is the relevant issue. We know Asuka and Shinji never meant to betray each other, but given what they each saw, that's not an unreasonable conclusion. And by the time they got into Instrumentality, where lack of communication finally wasn't the issue, they were too far gone to repair the damage. Either that or they were still wrapped in their own little realities and arguing with a projection of the other within themselves. (Is there a difference? Shinji did say that it was the projection of himself in others that gave him value)

Also, I'm not sure destroying the plug IS the best way to kill an Eva. The plug is just a control mechanism. Destroying the plug would most likely cause the Eva to go out of control, which would mean it would go berserk. Which means you now have an even bigger problem.

The best way to "kill" an Eva would be to knock out its power cord and then just wait it out until it ran out of energy. But the MP Evas have S2 engines, so they don't run out of energy. So that takes us back to the default Angel strategy, which is to destroy the core. Surrounded and outnumbered, Asuka probably figured, "Immobilize first, then take out the cores." The MP Evas helped reinforce her misperception by playing dead.

That begs the question, just how smart are the MP Evas? Considering that they appear capable of sadism...

I would suspect that is a sign of the Kaworu programming in the cores. Which brings up a bunch of new questions...

Then again, the one time a Rei dummy plug was used in battle, it also went fairly nuts. I seriously doubt that Rei herself, even canon Rei, would have gutted Unit-03 like a fish, decorated the countryside with its entrails, and crushed the entry plug just because.

In fact, did we ever see a dummy plug in canon act under apparent outside control rather than just going on its own rampage? One almost gets the impression that, even if it's nominally based off a pilot's neural patterns, in practice it tends to be a shortcut to the berserk state, or something like it.

Why should they necessarily? When the plug is a control mechanism the logical conclusion would be indeed to simply destroy the plug or destroy the connection of it to the EVA.
The problem is it was never realy explained how the plug works together with the Unit. I would guess Nerv and Seele aren't stupid and built the Eva's in a way that makes them reliant on the plug to operate.
But that begs the question how 'going Berserk' works. In the show we are being told it's the implanted Soul taking over control. That would suggest there is a way to bypass the plug completely.
On the other side we are talking of a 100 meter somewhat cyborg with cybernetics and stuff. These would need to be controlled by a computer system to open the pylons for example or the spike launcher of Unit02.
The plug, I think, also interprets the neural data and then sends it towards the Unit. And with being human-like, it would need to control body functions like breathing, swallowing or that almost uselees digestive system the Units have.
In the end we simply don't know how most of the things work. That leaves us only to say 'Black Magic' or 'science'.:???:

Given their location, the Plug interrupts the spinal cord right at the base of the neck. This prevents (what's leftof) the EVA's brain from issuing commands without the pilot's assent, perhaps excluding things like rudimentary life functions (provided EVAs even have those). The core, however, is connected to the Plug and therefore the CNS and the rest of the body, meaning one could control the entire EVA from there, presuming the pilot lets that happen (or is unconscious). The idea behind syncing with the soul in the core means that there are two pilots for the EVA, one in the plug, one in the core, and neither can act without the other agreeing, and sync rates reflect how much those two pilots agree. However, if one of them cedes control, either can directly control the EVA, like a berserking Unit or Kaworu's use of Unit-02.

This also means you could theoretically do away with the core with a double plug sync method, but you would need two pilots in perfect sync to pull it off at the same level of effectiveness as a pilot-core solution. Now where could we find something like two people able to act in perfect sync;)?

Oh god Shinji, must I grow to despise you more and more with each passing day?

What Turing said; the question was meant to be from Asuka's perspective.

Also, WC-83, I think the problem isn't that he thought he was unworthy of saving her, but that when he saw his frozen Evangelion, he simply shut down in a kind of 'what's even the point anymore' mental state.
