A few posts back somebody asked if there was a Vegetan Protocol that filled the same social space as an emotionally-supportive hug. I answered that there exist seven. Not that Protocol Seven is the appropriate one, but that there are seven protocols which apply. Nonetheless, I take their meaning.
Now technically, Protocol Seven is a challenge to a death match as a result of a deadly insult, but I am a merciful god and thus shall interpret it as intended.

Point of order: I haven't, but I've got some minimal exposure to training in the subject. Specifically, from the point of view of being the teacher or other first point of contact adult who finds out that the abuse is going on. What do you do if one of your students tells you that a trusted adult is abusing them? What do you do if you discover the abuse yourself?
One of the answers is, you reassure the child that they are valued and cared about, and that help will come for them.
Others are more obvious like "call Child Protective Services," of course; you do those and this. But those answers aren't applicable to our situation.
Important Clarification: I am not a child psychiatrist, therapist, or other person qualified to "deal with" cases of child abuse in the broader sense. However, I have been the beneficiary of the distilled and concentrated recommendations such professionals have, for what is to be done when dealing with a child you know has been abused.
It is a joking name for "use the correct Vegetan social protocol to indicate that we are trying to provide comfort to an emotionally distressed person."
Jaffur is keeping a LOT of misery bottled up to be as intensely functional as he is, and if we want a sane-ish Jaffur coming out of this, we need to make sure he feels cared about and valued, not systematically betrayed and cared about only for his fighting abilities.
It's not that he's a woobie to be saved, it's that it's really fucking dangerous for a person as powerful and skilled at violence as Jaffur to think that the only valid reason he has for existence is to fight and/or kill.
In my fallible opinion, this is a reason to approach slowly and stop if he seems reluctant or resistant. Not a reason not to offer.
If I am wrong and you are right, nevertheless it would be appropriate to add "Initiate Vegetan Social Protocol Seven" to your vote. After all, if enough pro AND anti-hug people vote for it, it will drown out the 'Hug' vote, which otherwise might threaten to win. There will be time to chat about other subjects in the next 'round' of voting.

He's not a damsel in distress, but he is a child who deserves far, far more moral support and care than he has ever gotten. He is also quite possibly the deadliest warrior since the days of the old Z fighters, with a preternatural clarity of purpose and an amazing capability to do great things by intense concentration.
The fact that the second is true makes it more imperative to build some connections with him other than "we like to beat each other up." Not less so.
Then by all means vote "No Hug," but I still would like to encourage people to vote for the 'Vegetan Protocol' option, in addition to other options they would like to see win.
There's nothing stopping me from voting for four or five things, as long as they're all things I want to see succeed. Indeed, the more extra things you vote for, the greater the chance of choking out the "Hug" vote, even if a few more pro-Hug voters turn up in the next several hours.

My problem is that we're also a child, and a regarded equal. It just feels incredibly patronising to him if we do this.
I feel like we'll be much better served meeting him on his terms, and then engage him socially as a friend.
Remember that beating each other up is an accepted and popular social activity for the exiles.

I am 100% okay with you voting for teasing, as long as at least one option specifically intended to convey emotional support for Jaffur is among the three winners. 1) Voting for "No Hug" instead of voting for other things preferable to the "Hug" option seems counterproductive to me, even from the point of view of someone who thinks "Hug" is a bad idea.
2) I think it might be too soon to go straight into "Ask him about the night of the Sealing." I'd rather at least spar with him and talk to him a bit first.
Poptart has made it fairly clear that that WAS the "Hug" option. No one here is talking about forcing a hug on Jaffur against his will, and indeed it seems likely that Kakara could not do so even if she wanted to.
