Yes, my concerns are maybe only 20-30% OpSec, and 70-80% Path of Civilisation type stuff.

Handing out writing technology, uplifting spider-hives like we're Dwarves or something. Talk about genies out of bottles. We don't know nearly enough about them to do that.
We know they eat skaven, and sometimes, that's enough.
Though we'd probably be the junior name on the paper. I don't see anything wrong with that though.
Don't be absurd, Johann just became a Magister last turn! We clearly have seniority.

"Hey Johann, who is this 'M. Weber, M.U.', and why's she on your warptech paper? Why's she FIRST?"
"Just... don't ask, man. Just don't ask."

If we wanted to be mean, we could see if we can find any prior paper that list him as magister, and send in a correction, since he clearly just graduated :V

Sadly, the dwarves probably don't get copied in on the Colleges' journals, and wouldn't want to be, as they'd correctly recognise them as guild secrets that it would be unacceptable to trespass on.

You know, I just realised that for the dwarves, the strange ally referred to in the title of the last update might well be Mathilde. After all, it's A Strange Ally, not Strange Allies.

Vote time.

[X] Plan Not Really Preliminary Anymore
[X] Plan Magical Mathilde

I don't much care for the current winning plan. Johan can do his private stuff in his private time. We always did. I also prefer giving the We a way to talk to the dwarfs. Because friendship.

There's a conspiracy theory that Mathilde Weber is actually Anton Kiesinger, miracle diplomat.

Say @BoneyM sorry if someone already asked this, but once the factory is completed, will the favor costs for the above change?

Looking at the top options for sneaking the spiders, I think Mathilde's being quite confident in teaching the spiders a language that she doesn't 'speak' herself. She might be able to pull it off, but Max seems like he'd be better at it.

Consider that this isn't really us letting Johann doing is private stuff in his work time. This is Mathilde's excuse to gate crash a co-authorship on his research with plausible deniability, while finding out how he's doing his private business, and working out if she needs to intervene, while also placing him in the perfect place to be useful if we need to switch to intervening to help the spiders. It's Mathilde pretending to help him do his own business, while actually shanghaiing him into doing exactly what she needs where she needs him. It's actually quite a great piece of manipulation he's helpless to refuse, as it seems like a favour on the surface and he'd look bad by doing so.

This is a significant power play over him on Mathilde's part. It's not her being weak or nice or whatever people are assuming. It's both stick and carrot, offered in a way that's very much Mathilde's take on being a Grey Wizard.

Also, once they can write Reikspeil, it would be trivial for a random dwarf ranger to teach them the semaphore language if we suggest it. The semaphore language is probably vastly less rich, and might lack words for a huge number of useful concepts, while the reverse wouldn't be true.

@spiritualatheist
Would not a paper on something Max has his own experience with be more likely to do well than one only we have experience with (Stirland stuff)?
Maybe? But there seems to be a significant group who don't want to do any of the more recent papers without Mathilde assisting. And from the description of the action it's more about going through a pile of papers than writing down our own observations. That is more Max's wheelhouse than ours.

If we are just going to 'order' Johann to do what he would be doing anyway then we should kick him from our staff. This 'we should let him do what he wants' argument feels like it will be a frequently recurring one.

@BoneyM
1) Will 'Fire/Hire Wizard' options be available in the post turn votes?
2) Would Esbern and Seija be interested in sticking around now there is something (The We) for them to investigate in their off-hours?
This. The entire point of having minions is having them do things for us. The reason we hired Johann was because he was useful. "Promoting" him was a consequence of his own lies. Now that he's back, he's already going to spend most of his actions poking away at the Skaven. Why do we think that a marginal increase in poking Skaven time is going to make him so much happier than being back at K8P?
Having given it some thought, I have come to the conclusion that the problem is not that we are "allowing" Johann to do what he wants to do, it's that we are insisting that we hold his hand while he does so; as such, we get the "marginal increase to Skaven poking time" instead of fully off-loading investigating the Skaven onto Johann. Something that strictly speaking, is not part of our job. While I'm not going to go to the extent of making a competing plan that has us investigate snekjuice or teach the spooder frens to wave their hands around instead to poking about the Skaven with Johann, hopefully seeing him in action first-hand will be enough that we can safely treat him as a big boy capable of taking care of himself next turn. Then, we will be about to outsource our collective paranoia about not knowing what the Skaven are doing and focus more on Court Wizard things.

Like snekjuice. Or hey, tapping into that supposed knack for enchanting we've tapped into all of twice IIRC and make Johann an item that would allow him to sneak with even a fraction of our skill and panache. :V

Obviously this is all fanciful long term planning based on a number of things we currently barely understand working out just right, but it'd be amusing for theurgy from the God of Cats to be used to wipe out the worshippers of the God of Rats.
Potential advantage of fully setting up that shrine to Ranald: spontaneous cat population.

[X] Plan Citadel Focus
-[X][Max] Current Task: Have Maximilian teach the We written Reikspiel.
-[X] [Johann] Allow him to spend all his time investigating Clan Mors.
-[X] [EIC] Instil corporate policy: always be scrupulously honest when dealing with Dwarves.
-[X][SOCIAL] Wolf is now fully grown, and is a very large dog or a regular-sized wolf. Train him. (increases his intelligence, may deepen Familiar bond)
-[X][PENTHOUSE] Have a tower built atop Karag Nar: -100gc for 1 room, bonus to room's purpose.
-[X][Free] Request the translation item yourself (does not cost an action; converts 3 College Favour to Dwarf Favour).
-[x] Help the We establish their new nest below the Citadel. [ACTION 1][COIN]
-[X] Spend time assisting with a fellow councillor's task: Gunnar, assist him with human burial rites.
-[X] You have acquired the possession of the Temple where Ranald mugged Mork. Set up a shrine and spread knowledge of it throughout Karag Nar.
-[X] Write in: You've mapped the territory of Clan Mors. Help Johann with his investigations there, with an eye to covertly disrupting the Skaven ability to deal with the spiders while you're there.
-[X] The Gambler: Clan Mors investigation/sabotage

I can see that as a reading, but it just doesn't feel that way. I'm not opposed in principle to helping him out (in fact, it's on my todo list), I just don't think this is the time. He's going to be here for a while yet.

I want the spiders to be able to talk to dwarfs without needing a writing surface (and at a distance they feel safe at). The richness might be true right now, but that's going to rapidly change, giving there's now a strong incentive for it. Spider semaphore is likely to become it's own language before too long. And for that reason, I think the argument that someone else can teach semaphore can apply to Reikspiel and Khazalid as well.

Are we really that desperate for college favour that we need to stick our nose in someone else's research though? Could we also assist him as he works on the Skaven in his free time while giving him work to do as his job if we really do want to get involved in his project? I just feel we're getting no work out of Johan for two turns in a row now.

[edit] on a reread college favor isn't your only motivation, but my second point does still stand, we can investigate Johan and get work out of him at the same time. At least I think so. Do we have word of BoneyM on that / is he still awake?
