[] Explain that we don't really know what we are, we just showed up in an alleyway one day without any memories and equipped with knowledge of the puella magi system.
-[] Say that we'd rather hold off on telling her more for now, because she's still a stranger to us.

Could probably be worded better or something, but this seems like a decent enough explanation for now.

Also, I think it's pretty reasonable to not explain everything to her right away: so long as we don't pull a Kyubey and pretend we're giving the full truth. Like, um, most people don't really want to share their life stories with a total stranger with unknown motives? And paranoia is common amongst magical girls. I think it's likely that she'll understand if we'd prefer to hold off on explaining more.

We got leverage. Riona wants out power.

We need a middle ground in between "we promise to collaborate but under X conditions" and "Riona's patience snaps".

And we need to make sure to preempt any sort of Witchbombs while we're with Mami, and before answering anything beyond platitudes, we need to know what Riona's opinion of KB is, and need to stablish whether she's witchbombed (and warn her Mami is not).

Riona probably hates KB (in which case we probably can bond over kb hate), and probably is witchbombed, but we kind of need to be clear on it, so we can be clear that Mami is not, and then so we can address de-Witching.

I think she's partially asking about our powers, so maybe we could two-part the answer? First explain that we have our powers because we wished for the ability to control grief. They are -so far as we can tell- the direct result of that. Beyond that though, we don't actually know, so we can segue from that into the explanation of amnesia and waking up in an alley with knowledge and what-have-you etc.

That way Riona isn't left with no information but we don't have to tell lies or whatever.

Imagine spending your entire life's work trying to accomplish something and then all of a sudden someone pops out of fucking nowhere having accomplished it before you.
I still wouldn't be a rude, arrogant asshole to someone who's apparently more talented than I am, and could potentially give me the answers I've been seeking for years. Especially when she's been nothing but kind to me.

Guys, Guys, we have to stay calm otherwise we'll be pretty rude and then she'd respond with more rudeness and then it would all spiral downhill until she reveals that she can replicate souls and a new quest springs up.
Edit:By the way, I finally figured out what ExplosionGuca's wish was.
Examining all the evidence, her explosion powers, her lack of self esteem, her inability to do anything but explode.
It would obviously have to be 'I wish I could just explode!'

I think we're absolutely fine answering who we are before we go into her motivations and the witchbomb and such. Just get her in a privacy bracelet as quickly as possible so she doesn't witchbomb Mami before we can make clear she is not to do so.

She's being a little rude, not kicking our dog or something.

*If* we actually answer her promptly and comprehensively and then we have a productive dialogue about our respective ambitions and plans and such I suspect she'll start warming up to us.

Well, you're clearly not Irish. :V
( Sorry, Shadowhisker. )

She's actually more polite than Kyouko on average.
I think it's kinda hypocritical we would want to be friends with one rude person, but would turn our nose on another.

( huh, is it a fan theory, or is Kyouko partly Irish?)

[] Be firm, polite, just beware Riona's patience doesn't snap.

[] Riona.
-[] Put your foot down: No talk of sensitive topics without privacy measures.
--[] If necessary, to tide her over (else wait on this until you got Privacy):
---[] Promise to answer her questions, if she answers your.
---[] Share you hope to work together.
---[] Share commonly known details: Amnesia, random knowledge of facts, odd potential, Wish.
-[] Offer to help sort out her accomodations, or to move to a private place first if she's impatient.

[] In private: Privacy Sphere.
-[] Precaution: Leave some Grief with Mami to signal if something goes wrong.
-[] Riona:
--[] Before answering her questions, ask:
---[] Her motives.
---[] Her opinion on Kyuubey.
---[] What her powers see in you.
---[] What she wants to know, before what she already asked.

Hm. I think I'd like to hear Riona's answers to this before deciding what we're willing to share ourselves, beyond the basics everyone knows?

Homura also has significant social issues that we've worked with anyway.

The main reason people are a lot more negative about Riona, I think, is because of fear. She's similar to Homura in that she's really powerful, has her own agenda, has social issues, etc. The difference here is that we know Homura's motivations and we know how to deal with her social issues. Riona, however, is an unknown: we DON'T know her agenda, we DON'T know how to deal with her social issues, and we haven't seen her at her best like we've seen with Homura. Riona is scary, to be put simply.

[Q] Homumom
-[Q] We're being bullied by a new girl! Halp!
-–[Q] Watch the unfolding carnage. Don't look away. This is your fault.

Nah man, i am irked because she snubbed mami
.....
And partially because she is an invader of privacy. That perv, tryin to bully our secrets out.

[] Make a grief whiteboard on which reads:
  • Magic
  • QBs shady new scheme
  • The law of cycles is fooling around again
  • it's a Pleiades saints conspiracy

Do you think 'If I answer this question can you answer one of mine' is a good compromise?
Along this line, but keep our spine. Make it a statement. Establish an uphill gradient. This might be a good way to get her to back down. We start out tough as she is, and de-escalate in steps.

We will answer one question, and tell her we expect her to start answering ours. But there are complications.

Tell her we are either going to the roof, or taking her for a meal, right now. If she hesitates, we start going for the stairs, and wave her to hurry along with us.

[] We have a magic for Privacy
-[] does she have another technique?

We can say in the clear
[] serial memory of recent weeks
[] Mostly all learning and context information
[] Can't go past that openly

And then...

[] We need to use Privacy now

Or, we could enter into cumbersome contract-bound Fairy negotiations. Nah.

We can speak in epic terms, until she chills out a bit.

[] I need all my people alive and well
-[] help conditional on promising to protect them from infohazards
-[] explain infohazards
-[] probe for witchbomb
[] Mami is boss here.
-[] Why did you come
-[] We have all night

To be fair, we dealt with both of those incredibly poorly. :V

I do think we can take Riona at face value, which means she's probably being honest about having looked for a power like ours for years, which both means that our goals are probably mostly aligned, and that Riona is going to extend us some slack - after all, if she pisses us off enough that we can't cooperate, then she can't accomplish whatever she wanted a grief manipulator for. (Probably dewitching, but it's best to not make assumptions.)

Are we sure that comment on waiting "a donkey's years for ye" isn't referring to the wait at the airport?

This is a girl who traveled around the world at the drop of a hat --- if a very large hat--- immediately wanted to ride out to meet us, and interrupts us in conversation to get her answers. Everything we know about her character so far says that she could easily have just arrived at the airport and be just that impatient.

Yeah, we've been pretty paranoid these last couple vote discussions, and I really don't think it's helpful. Kind of the opposite.

She also has leverage because we want her power. This is largely irrelevant, because we're still in the stage of trying to tolerate each others presence. We should focus on trying to get past that before trying to negotiate anything.
We need to change the momentum.

[Q] Brief answer to her question

[Q] We need to go elsewhere to talk

[Q] Taxi to a cat cafe, hamster playroom, or find a location where kittens are abundant.

[Q] Distract her with cute fluffiness.
-[Q] Much better.

"You're going to have to elaborate," you say. You're already kind of annoyed. "You mean my powers, right?"

"To be sure," she snaps, rolling her eyes. "I've tried, everyone's tried, everyone wants to do what you can do. I can see you're not normal, what's the story?"

Okay, so. I'm going to operate on the basis that Riona has the right to be antisocial, and that she's being even more brusque then normal for her because she just got off a 14 hour flight.

[x] You explicitly wished to be able to control grief. You're aware that your soul is strange (the Incubator mentioned it), but aren't certain why.
-[x] Magic was almost certainly involved, but you don't have any personal memories prior to waking up half-dead in an alleyway a few weeks ago.

[x] Telepathy Riona: Mami doesn't know about witches.

[x] Is she planning to stay? You can help find accommodations.
-[x] You'd be very happy to work with her - her specialty opens up a lot of options combined with grief manipulation. You have ways to ensure privacy when discussing sensitive issues.
