And that neatly demonstrates why we didn't bother challenging ourselves. We may be a LM, but Dragomas is on a completely differently level.

@BoneyM In the update it's mentioned that Paranoth held the Supreme Patriarch position for a term and was a powerful challenger, but he's one of two Patriarchs we haven't met or know much about. What does Mathilde know about him?

I'm confused as to the hostility to Alric tbh. To him I feel a solid 'meh'
I think a big reason for that is the fact he's mean to Egrimm😂 Personally, I think his time is passed and he should let go his place. I don't hate him, I find him pitiable. He had a brilliant career, committed a big mistake, and still refuse to recognise he's not suited for power anymore.

We lose, baring extreme luck or an absolutely massive miscalculation on Dragomas' part. Mathilde's good, but she's not 'I can solo a dragon' good- we'd essentially be completely reliant on getting in a hit before he could transform.
Or grabbing the Staff of Volans before he does, which we have a better chance at.

The odds would still be against Mathilde, but she doesn't need to directly attack him. The Staff is a powerful force multiplier.

I like Arburg's moxie. She, a newly graduated Lord Magister, just saw Dragomas beat down the Patriarch of an entire College without casting a single spell, and her immediate thought was "Yeah, I can take him".

This is the sort of initiative we need to see in young Lord Magisters in these trying times.

We also did not want or need the job and hand another one lined up.
That too, true.
Or dispelling the transformation as he is doing it, perhaps in a way that induces a miscast. We are the Dhar expert...
Could work, but I doubt it'd be that easy. If Dragomas' transformation was that easy to disrupt mid-casting then somebody would already have tried it.

...either that, or nobody tries it just due to how dangerous and unpredictable battle magic miscasts are; a successful disruption could have results anywhere up to 'suddenly, demon horde!', after all.

I don't think it's powerful enough, in this case. It might let us equal (maybe exceed?) his magic stat, but Dragomas would still be a dragon and Mathilde honestly isn't that impressive offensively with her magic. She's much more about support and swording.

It should also be pointed out that Dragomas seems to be a rather down-to-earth and sensible leader. Even if we should happen to win against him in the duel by pure luck, that luck likely wouldn't keep through all the other challengers, which in turn could put someone rather unsuitable in the seat of Supreme Patriarch.

There is a lot of wizards already here. I do not think the daemons would have a fun time of emerging in the hall. Then again your fellow wizards would probably keep challenging you if you won a duel on the basis of making the previous guy explode into daemons.

Usually known as Paranoth the Wanderer, which he definitely lives up to. It's said he's walked every road in the Old World, Araby, and Ind. That makes him a rather hands-off Magister Patriarch, but the Jades don't seem to be suffering from it.

In very faint defence of Alric, Dragomas' rebuke of him was a spell called Cowering Beasts.

Can Dragomas rechallenge if his challenger gets beaten?

That depends on the power and type of demons, really. A bunch of Daemonettes? Not an issue. A Bloodthirster and its entourage? At that point, you have a problem...
