If the tutor job is taken, I'd definitely push hard for Mathilde to take on an apprentice at the same time. Raising both together under the same Lord Magister is prime Story bait for the pair to become eternal rivals/friends.
Manndred can just be eternal rivals/friends with Wolf. He's basically Mathilde's child.
Just think of the shenanigans for Sylvania pt 2

Sylvania peasant: "Thats when I saw her that is. The Markgave, the dammerlictor. Riding a horse made of night and with her great wolf running by her side. What terrible creature she went to slay I have no idea, but I want no part that I don't. And neither do any right thinking folk!"

Mathildes journal: "So I went riding to Anton's for cake and I felt like Wolf needed to stretch his legs"
Plus, we're a much better enchanter now. We could totally get that statue of Van Hal that produces a Shadowsteed when you rub the foot and chant 'The Hunter Count will always watch over His people' that I always wanted

The most important part of taking the Eastern Stirland assignment is to ensure we actually are Gabriella von Ernachthafen.

I betcha a solid 60% percent of prospective necromancers who read that tale come out thinking "Oh, so I need to become a vampire first".

Luckily Mathilde is already there
Well, it's a good thing that vampires are not exactly common in the Old World these days, and their numbers seem to be dropping all the time. Plus, becoming a vampire means finding another vampire to take you under their wing, and vampires are not exactly known for being good bosses.

I have bad news for you then, it's called being a human wizard. Apotheosis is not some strange procedure that mutilates the soul, it is just walking along the path which all Imperial magisters must walk. Just ask Johann.
There's a difference between walking down the path and sprinting down it, and like I said before, just because death is inevitable doesn't mean that you should try to kill yourself.

Considering Mathilde's primary reason for considering leaving her job is lack of excitement, I don't see her lasting 10 years as a babysitter, even if that's code for 'Heidi's right hand'.

She doesn't even like kids.
To be fair, being the right hand woman of the Empress while being the bodyguard and personal tutor of the likely future-Emperor is a big deal, and not just for ourselves or for Ranald. The Colleges work tirelessly to integrate themselves deeply into the fabric of Imperial society so that they aren't just outlawed by the next Emperor that's too rabidly conservative about his Sigmarite faith and putting the Colleges under siege again. Having a trusted wizard in good standing having a major part in the life of the future Emperor as he grows up (both making wizards a normal, relatable thing for him on an instinctive level and making him well-disposed towards the Colleges in general) would be of great value to the Colleges. Plus, well, Mandred, if he becomes Emperor, will be the head of the entire Empire. And considering that his namesake was assassinated by skaven and that the Era of Three Emperors was more or less the result...it's not an unreasonable request even if you look past it at face value.

Personally, I'm torn between "the Empire's ambassador to the Karaz Ankor", "Mandred's tutor/bodyguard and Heidi's advisor", and "Spymistress of Nuln who will actually be trying to tackle the skaven infestation under one of the Empire's most important cities". The first just plain makes sense--Mathilde is by far the most qualified and best suited for the role. The second has a lot of potential but may not be what Mathilde is looking for. And the third puts Mathilde in her element: tackling a skaven infestation in a strategically critical place with a substantial amount of forces to call upon that must be committed wisely. Mathilde is probably the person in the Empire best suited for countering a skaven infestation--she knows the skaven well, and her own abilities make her extremely well suited for finding and exploiting their vulnerabilities.

That being said, there is one more task of serious importance left at K8P: the waystones, and the collaboration with the Eonir. And considering how K8P's waystones are literally the lifeline for the Karaz Ankor as a whole, that is definitely very important, if not as exciting as magical doom tower superweapons or cracking Queekish.

My point doesn't really have anything to do with how important it is. Important does not necessarily equate to exciting.

People are assuming that there's more to it, but being a tutor/bodyguard for a five year old is far from exciting. And even if those assumptions are correct and we'd actually be doing missions for Heidi- what do people think those would entail, exactly?

If Mathilde is bored while living in a melting pot at the edge of the Old World, in a position where she can and does go haring off on adventures, I can't see settling down in Altdorf to be an improvement. Especially for someone who has so far demonstrated no interest in high society politicking.

For Nuln, how much is even left of Under-Nuln?

The Empire just attacked it openly after all.
A lot. The attack didn't go well, because while they knew the skaven had just had a civil war, they didn't really know how to tackle a major skaven infestation and they didn't have magical support. Mathilde being able to scout out what the hell is going on and where everything/everyone is would be hugely valuable...as would her assassinating the leaders shortly before an assault.

...wait a minute.
Thanks to you, our mutual friend has the opportunity to mend some important bridges in Kislev, and thinks that you'd be perfect for the job. It will let the cat out of the bag in some respects, but what better way to do that than to be named High Priest of Ranald?

I just spotted a prank from our oldest friend.

Isn't the main problem with getting a Ranaldite High Priest down to:
-Most pious priests of Ranald are allergic to public attention. Many are allergic to any kind of attention.

-Many Ranaldites are contrarians, if you tell them to go to the Conclave, nobody shows up, if you forbid them they will sneak in. This extends internally - we put out an advertisement for devotees to the Gambler, specifically excluding Deceivers and we quite promptly got a Deceiver devotee who had to have Ranald poke him on the shoulder and let him know Bad Idea Bro.

Taking Ranald High Priest is going to make herding wizards look like puppies.
We'd be herding an unknown number of persons of uncertain nature, a significant number of whom would promptly do the opposite thing to what we asked, and another portion would do what they believe we actually asked in code.

Ranald would laugh himself sick XD

See, here's the thing. I don't find "bodyguard/tutor" all that inherently interesting either, but Boney has confirmed that the first round of voting is just approval voting for "find out more about what this actually entails." So while I'm not that interested in this one on face value, I'll still probably approval vote for it just to find out what more there may or may not be to it given the possibilities people have raised about what could be behind the curtain on this one. Because the first round of voting won't be for "do this thing" it will be for "pull back the curtain on this thing and find out what it would actually be."

As I recall, the reason the attack didn't go well (as it was related to Mathilde by Kazrik, at least) was actually that they thought the Skaven civil war was still ongoing in Under-Nuln but it had actually just wrapped up and they mistook post-victory squabbling for ongoing conflict. Which meant they drove in expecting a divided enemy still fighting amongst themselves, and were not prepared for all the Skaven in Under-Nuln to immediately drop the squabbling (as much as Skaven ever do, anyway) and unite against the common enemy. Things didn't go great from there.

One minor thing to keep in mind about the High Priest job is that being in Kislev it puts us closer to the Ungol Hags, one of two known non-Chaos magician traditions that bind spirits. It might help with apparition binding. I doubt it will be a major consideration for anyone, but I thought I would mention it.

Sylvania feels like a done chapter. We've been there, we've done that. Furthermore, the place is damn shitty and feels very lacking in potential. What's the end game?
Did a little checking into things.

I wonder what exactly we'd get, as the hypothetical Elector Count of Sylvania? By my count, Sylvania if broken down into fourths would be:

1) Hunter's Hills, settled (insofar as they are) by our old K8P expedition umgis
--Beyond them are the World's Edge Mountains, containing various types of gribblies and patrolled by Zhufbar

2) Hunger Wood (recently evicted tenants: the Strigoi); patrolled by Stirland's Second Division
--On one side of Hunger Wood is Tempelhof, held by Morr's Black Guard, and on the other is Siegfriedhof (Raven Knight HQ)

3) Mikalsdorf (held by the joke of a vampire, Mihnea), but bordered by Hel Fenn, Grim Wood and Grim Moor
-- This quarter also contains Pfaffbach and Nachthafen (Stirland's)

4) The 'good' territory, if you can call it such: Waldenhof (held by Ioana, the only serious vampire stronghold), Hundham, Thyrnau and Regrakhof (Stirland's), Teufelheim (recently evicted: Alkharad), Drakenhof (sometimes on fire), Castle Drakenhof (ruins of)
--Also one third Misty Wood, one third Tangled Wood and Dark Moor. But it does have good river access, if you can call it that. See below.

We'd get significant access to the River Stir and three offshoot rivers from it: the North Stir, the South Stir, and River Templa. The bad news is that the Stir runs for part of its length alongside Hunger Wood, Grim Wood, and Hel Fenn (not well patrolled). The North Stir runs along the Misty Wood, the South Stir right through the Tangled Wood, and the River Templa runs along the Tangled Wood and the Dark Moor. The other bad news is that Ostermark probably wants to control the River Stir and the Talabeclanders definitely do, so there's politics involved too.

Sylvania is basically one third hills, one third forest or swamp, and one third useful land, with a crucial river resource that's bedeviled by both monsters and foreign merchants. We'd be completely dependent on Stirland's armies (there's like five Divisions of them in Sylvania right now) to deal with monsters and the EIC to deal with the foreigners.

So the question of 'How win' is to finish off the remaining two vampire strongholds, and then just hold on to the place like grim death in the face of the monster parade and whatever Talabecland's up to these days. The longer we hold onto it, the more they forget being ruled by the terrible fist of the Night's Dark Masters and the more they get used to being ruled by the terrible fist of the Dammerlichtreiter.

I doubt the average Silvanian would know the difference between Mathy and a Lahmian, or care if they did. 'Powerful witch with shadow magic who can rip you apart in melee' yep that is familiar. They would probably be more conflicted by any dwarfs coming to visit since they are even more racist than other Imperials and they don't have the Sigmarite religious obligation of being nice to dwarfs.

@BoneyM : A question about the Wissenland option. Gray wizards aren't allowed to interfere in the empire's internal politics. The only reason we could become a spy master before was because we were against vampires. However Skaven-related is a secret so how is giving Mathilde the position justified? I have gathered before that the gray order considers publicly upholding the vows about as important as actually holding to them.

Anyone important enough to raise a fuss is already read in to the Conspiracy of Silence, and Spymaster isn't a public-facing role in places without a public-facing Vampire menace to combat.

Doesn't our fief--our poor, neglected, near-forgotten fief--in Stirland already qualify as an hereditary title?

Yes, but Knighthoods are a different kettle of fish entirely to full-blown Baronies and Counties.

@BoneyM how suitable are the Border Princes for nomadic or semi-nomadic life? I know the usual permanent settlements don't work but I don't know how well or how badly nomadism would work.

If you managed to combine enough territories to have a decent chunk of pasture and push out the local greenskins, it seems like it would be very suitable for it.

Actually, I don't think Ulricans have anything against magic? At least, not because of their faith. Ulric preaches self-reliance, and Wizards are, in principle, self-reliant - they cast on their own, the staffs and whatnot are optional aids that not every wizard has.

Relevant quote from Mathilde's visit to Middenheim:
It is well known that Ulric does not approve of magic, but it is equally true that Ulric does not approve of gunpowder, and yet Middenheim bristles with cannon. In the South of the Empire, Ulric is often seen as a primitive and backwards God, but mainstream Ulrican belief is that Ulric's first commandment is survival. All His other virtues - self-reliance, bravery, honour, honesty - are second to surviving the war and weathering the Winter. So apart from a few extremists in the woods, the Cult of Ulric is capable of negotiation, compromise, and coexistence. Despite Algard's concern, the Ar-Ulric is no more hostile to the Colleges of Magic than he is to the Gunnery School of Nuln.

Also, probably a stupid question, but... who exactly is the Chamberlain of the Imperial House? Just mildly curious.

Steward for the Grand Prince of Reikland, as opposed to the Emperor.

What do the thread means by « Ulgu apotheosis »? Because apotheosis means « becoming a god », and that's not a usual outcome for wizards.
