I don't want to be that guy, but for most of the quest if an action doesn't say that mathy will be in a group/create a group...

the assumption is she is going to solo the action.
Hrm. Let me check how true that has been on this Expedition. For all of our side jaunts thus far:
  • Visit the former site of Karak Vlag: done with Snorri and Rangers
  • Visit Uzkulak, the Chaos Dwarf equivalent to Barak Varr: done solo
  • Visit the combes that Qrech told you about: done solo
  • Investigate the 'Windfall' with the Light Wizards: done with the party specified in the action
  • Attempt to make contact with the Dolgan: done solo
  • Attempt to make contact with the Yusak: done solo
  • Attempt to steal the Chaos artefact: done with the party specified in the HEIST subvote
  • Attempt to make contact with the Baersonlings: done with Ruprecht and Winter Wolves
We rate this claim MOSTLY TRUE.

The thing is, the default appears to be "Mathilde will exercise her best judgment in picking a group," and for most of these actions her best judgment has been "do this alone." Some of them haven't, though, including one we're taking this turn! Originally, I supported the With Johann subvote because I thought it would be parsed as "Mathilde will pick the best group that includes Johann" -- e.g. if she otherwise would have gone alone, she would go in a pair, if she otherwise would go with Snorri and Rangers she would go with Snorri, Rangers, and Johann, and so on -- but then I dropped my vote after Boney clarified that this was not the case. By then it was too late, though.

It's not very high stakes of an action, since what we should expect to find is "nothing" regardless of who we're bringing with us, but it is a reminder that we should get clarification on how proposed write-ins will be interpreted early in the voting process.

Option voted for:
[*] Do the thing
-[*] With this person

Me: Okay, Mathilde will do the thing with this person.

As far as I can tell, there's nobody saying they don't actually want Mathilde to bring Johann. They're upset that they're missing out on Mathilde choosing on her own because they seem to have latched onto the idea that she would have been able to use perfect foresight to construct the completely optimal party to rediscover the lost Hold, but because they wrote in Johann that opportunity is lost forever and now Mathilde won't bring Sir Basket Weaver and it'll turn out there'll be a door at the hold only opened by perfectly-weaved baskets or something.

Because the vote is closed, let me peel back the curtain and tell you what Mathilde would have chosen in this alternate universe: SHE WOULD HAVE BROUGHT JOHANN AND NOBODY ELSE BECAUSE IT'S A HELL OF A DISTANCE OVER BROKEN TERRAIN.

Now can I please stop hearing about this?

In the name of giving the thread something else to latch onto, I'd like to put forward the observation that a mammoth could carry a Battle Altar on a howdah.
...See, I was still somewhat joking about the mammoth, but now I really want one. It wouldn't necessarily be good for Rite of Way, but a more offensive spell we designed, or even just something like Purple Sun or Pit of Shades...

Guys, we need this. All of this.

Hell, a Burning Shadows howdah even, with an attached light source thingy. A mammoth could cast one massive shadow in the right conditions, especially with the howdah on top.

Or how about constantly casting Grey Debuff spells on the nearby enemies, WHILE THEY ARE FIGHTING A MAMMOTH! One that has likely been armored because we have more metal available that Norscans.

I still don't think it's worth investing AP into getting a mount when we have an excellent Mastery for our Shadowsteed... but if it was a mammoth I'd think about it.
We just need to create a Steed of Shadows variant that's a mammoth, rather than a drake. Easy peasy.
Interesting how this contrasts with Panoramia's approach, which I would describe as unimpressed eyerolling.

I just love this bit. The joke is just great, and it's also very daww

Same for this one.

This is like an alcoholic who just recived a wine cellar.

Anton really is great.

Another rarely remembered hero. I like to think he's pleased with how things turned out.

It's neat how the group of advisors has grown together.
Also, Van Hal, exasperated middle-school teacher.

Reading stuff like this, I'm really noticing how much Mathilde's poker face improved. She still gets regularly surprised and baffled, but she doesn't really show it anymore.

Also does less basking in her accomplishments. Not none, but less.

Heh, Mathilde completely misses what's actually going on.

Some stuff from the thread:

This is in the context of casual use of magic not really being a thing in Warhammer. Except, with gotten to the point where that's only mostly true. Leaving the legendary Melkoth aside, Mathilde has used magic to make smoke props to impress that one trading envoy.

A reminder, this is from before the book.
Is it still Hugger-baiting if it happened before they found their calling?

Shoutout here. It's not quite Burning Shadows cast from Sigmar's holy light to melt a vampire, but I'm willing to give credit.
My favorite line from that update might be "You wear your greyest robe", which, what

One further argument in favor of mammoths: one of the biggest problems the Empire faces is the vast tracts of heavily forested land within their borders that are dominated by Beastmen. What is the thing we saw the Norscans using the mammoth for? Logging.

I rest my case.
