Humans do not have affinity to specific winds, at least most of them don't. Someone like Xerus could stumble into colored magic by virtue of temperament alone, but Mathilde is no Xerus, she was taken in to the Grey Order because of her age and because she imprinted on Reginald like a duckling.
Hubert at least had some kind of connection to Azyr. He could feel a change in the weather three days off and so ended up in the Celestials where he would have preferred a number of other orders.

Ranald: Did you hear? Mathilde reclaimed another Hold for you! Isn't she the best?

Thorgrim: She reclaimed another hold?! That's a grudging!

Ranald: what

Thorgrim: It shouldn't be possible for an Umgi to reclaim more holds than good Dawi.

Ranald: What

Thorgrim: So she must be a Dawi.

Ranald: What?!

Thorgrim: Which means you must have stolen her soul from the Underearth and reincarnated her as an Umgi!

Ranald: What?!

Thorgrim: That's a grudging!

Who says it wasn't Ranald who arranged that?
I'd say what was more likely was Ranald reincarnating Mathilde with some paranoia and guile as a personality. The rest was left to luck. This is my general feel of ranalds plans. Instead of something very complex that needs a lot of moving parts working right, he just invests in mini things that might give him an edge later. He doesn't know how or why they'll be useful in the future, but a devotee doing well is a useful chip to be cashed in later.

Mathilde Weber - Suffering From Success
An announcement from the Emergency Meeting of the Ancestor Cult Conclave of the Karaz Ankor, hosted in Karaz-a-Karak.

After certain confidential information was vouchsafed to this body by a source of undoubtable repute, a Grudge is hereby leveled against the being, spirit, force, ancestor, demiurge, and/or anthropomorphic personification commonly known as Ranald, believed to originate somewhere in our about the continent called The Old World, for the crime of theft of a disembodied Dwarven soul, which has subsequently been incarnated in the form of an Umgi.

Reparation or vengeance for said Grudge is to be postponed pending the full and proper evaluation of the consequences of those actions, which may be considered to mitigate, in whole or in part, those actions.

Witnessed and entered into the Book of Grudges by the High King.

About fifteen minutes of google searching and amateur paint editing and I feel like I've perfectly encapsulated Mathilde's situation right now.

Not having the most wonderful Christmas Day, but this helps makes up for it very much so.

We're really heading into 'Divided Loyalties ' all things considered.

Is Mathilde really a Dwarf reborn? How does Randal and the Dwarfs handle this Grudge? Which Dwarf is Mathilde?

So if we are supposed to have a dwarf soul, does that mean we get sent to the *under earth after we die? Can you imagine the reaction when they send a human soul there?

She would not grumble about that, if she were physically a dwarf she would not have magic.
The meme is saying that and then making some noise that the subject makes. She's grumbling because she's making the sound attributed to dwarfs, not because she isn't physically a dwarf.

Like, as an example: "On all levels except physical, I am a seagull." [Screeches]

RE: Legal Dwarfification

I feel like this is the sort of thing Ranald didn't actually do but would be absolutely thrilled to take credit for.

Because, of course His first real interaction with Dawi Society is to become enemy of the state.

"Our Karak disappeared !"
"Have you tried turning it off and on again ?"

She really is the mountain wizard: She made a mountain disappear foes, and she made another mountain reappear.
You know... when you put it like that, I imagine research into the way the dwarven waystones make stone permeable to magic would be excellent fodder for the Cartography project and thus continuing the theme of working magic with mountains.

Flash-forward to dead!Mathilde trying to bluff Gazul into recognizing her as a Dwarf.
Expanding on this

Gazul: "Aren't you a little tall for a Dwarf?"
Mathy: "Hey, you're the first person to call me tall. That's sweet. But no, it's within bounds"
Gazul: "Why's your soul half invisible?"
Mathy: "I'm a really good Ranger. I'm so used to it, I literally can't stop being sneaky."
Gazul: "So you're saying you're not an Umgi?"
Mathy: "Definitely not! Ask anyone!"
Mathilde points to a demonstration by dead dwarfs who knew her in life. They are holding signs like "Let her in!" and "She's not an Umgi, she's a Mathilde!"

Is Dwarfism hereditary, would Mathilde's children also be considered dwarfs? It might be too late for Mathilde to become a Runesmith but her children on the other hand......

Also Merry Christmas everyone, this was a pretty interesting present to wake up to.
