One of the interesting backstories of the setting is Ikit Claw's, who travelled the world to learn the secrets of magic, including, IIRC, spending decades spent working alonfside the masters of Zhar-Naggarund and learning secrets of dark magic from the sorceresses of Ghrond. Alongside stealing secrets from the mystics of Cathay and studying the magical architecture and machines of the lizard men.

I wonder what he paid the Daemonsmiths and Dark Covenant for training...

I did say if we were very lucky in the white room, like say if Morathi eats a hit from Kragg's belt and then Mathilde stabs her when she is in too much pain to focus properly.
This is Morathi we're talking about. Founder and head of the Pleasure Cults, whether in Ulthuan or Naggarond, and probably the oldest living Slaanesh cultist on Mallus. I'm doubtful the concept of 'too much pain' even exists as a facet of reality in her life.

Ok then when she is haveing too much fun from the novel sensation of having a spell burned from her living brain by runecraft. Either works.

A Lovely Evening in Altdorf
and so my long lurk had come to an end
i always like the trope of the emperor in charge is just weary of everything after a end of the world threat every few years, so i rolled with the inevitable.
ii dub this A lovely evening in Altdorf
_________________________________________________________________________________

It was a lovely evening in the Imperial Palace of Altdorf, the sun was slowly setting on the horizon, the sky was cloudy enough to be interesting and most importantly, Emperor Luitpold von Holswig-Schliestein the First had just finish the latest round with his advisors regarding the latest marienburg military buildup, if not for the coming threat of war, it could had been a pleasant evening, but in an empire ever besieged, one learned to take whatever enjoyment he can.

His enjoyment was currently sitting on the grass, listening to his other newfound joy reteling the tales of Sir Ronald, the self proclaimed Knight, a fictional story of a clever urchin who used trickery and deception to fool the Elector Count of reikland into believing him a Knight gone penniless, and anointed him his champion.

It was a winding tale, and rather fanciful one at that, including a slaying a chaos Everchosen, three separate waaaaagh, convincing the dawi to forge Sir Ronald a Runefang of his own, and ending up with his grand engagement to the sole child and daughter of the elector count, using trickery and skullduggery every step of the way.

He ought to revisit his discussion with his wife about what matters of stories are best suited for a future emperor, but giving the last three times that discussion ended with Manfred himself preferring those stories, there was little he could do.

It was a lovely evening that is, until the Supreme Patriarch decided to give him a surprise visit, there were very few things that would warrant such a visit after his official workday, and whatever calamitous or blissful, there is always a promise of a future headache to come.

"You might want to stay in the corridor Dragomas, after we informed Manfred that the Imperial Dragon is yet trained, he was rather disappointed, that is until he overheard a maid mentioning a certain wizard capable of turning into a dragon on his own."
"It took near an evening to convince him that future heir or not, a joy ride is not a sufficient a reason to use battle magic tier spells in the middle of the capital, and he still tried to sneak out the windows to visit your order, searching for one named Mas, who he was told can turn into a dragon."

"Nothing new your majesty, i grew rather used to it, the Amber new apprentice are not known for their tact, and there are always those who are rather too affected by their wind to guard their thoughts, i am told that this is a rather inspiring method of motivating the new students, that is until they learn that the fabled dragon racing is just a college hazing rumor, officially."

"So what brings you here at this hour, my friend, not that i am complaining, but the last such late a visit was one wizard among your colleges turning black, and the one before that was with knowledge of a full civil war Below, and ideas to take advantage of it. Your visit are never fruitless, you ought to bring a drink with you, save the poor servant girl the inevitable foray into the wine cellars."

A child's laugh was echoed behind in the garden, Heidi had just reached the part of the tale where Ronald manage to make both the witch hunters who were after him accuse each other of 'unbefitting devotion to sigmar's creed', fortunately. This being the children version, instead of the bloody battle they devolved into a matching poetry duel of some of the most famous of sigmar poems.

Luitpold was, as always, rather unsettled how well could his wife mimic the mocking tone of the story in her singing.

"I will seek to endeavor, there was a rather new drink recipe brought home with the latest journeyman, i am even told that those without an Amber constitution might survive it, but let us not digress from the matter at hand, i have quite the news to share"

"Then you will have to share the spotlight, i'm afraid" Luitpold said after one of his Greatswords open the garden's door for another evening visit, gods, was it his dear Spymaster and his Chamberlain, von Bitternach.

"Should i assume my Marshal is gathering our forces?, i see no reason for all of you to visit me this time aside from a full blown imperial crisis, what is it?, Marinburg declared a blockade on the route to the sea? Drachenfels had at last sallied out of their fortress? signs of a coming waaagh from Blackfire Pass?. Do tell me there is no word of a new Everchosen, i wish to keep some of my hair yet unyanked, though Heidi did tell me that grey hair would suit me fine..."

"No your Majesty, I come bearing a stranger, through potentially no less disastrous word" von Bitternach said.

"Well, then you two will have to wait, Dragomas, do be quick about it, i rather lament our coming doom when the sun still setting, make for a more appropriate atmosphere no?"

"Very well, as of an hour ago, the Grey College had passed me a rather interesting tidbit of information regarding one of their own, the newl-"

"-y titled Lady Magister Dame Mathilde Weber, and Loremaster of Karak Eight-Peak, we bear tiding of the same news, through i am proud to claim my spies had surpassed yours this time, Dragomas, i received word two hours ago, through i did need to spent a while more to ensure no forgery was made, the content was rather... befuddling" the spymaster interjected.

"Another one of your Mathilde's madness spring?, please Von Bitternach, please tell me your news are of a declaration of war between Nordland and Middenland. at least that will be something i could possibly predict."

Von Bitternach, Luitpold noticed, was shifting in his spot, his Chamberlain was shifting in his spot, gods forbid, what did that woman do now, he just barely managed to prevent Heidi from officially declaring that woman the royal Godmother, as if showing such blatant favoritism to one of the College would end in anything but disaster.

"A missive from Karak-a-Karak your Majesty" he let out at last, "an emergency meeting of the Ancestor Cult Conclave, dated for a few days ago", he handed the emperor the missive.

"And i already told you to get your spies out of my Diplomatic Corps" he shot a glare toward the Spymaster.

"Guilty, but never charged." was the returned call, almost a tradition by now.

"""
An announcement from the Emergency Meeting of the Ancestor Cult Conclave of the Karaz Ankor, hosted in Karaz-a-Karak.

After certain confidential information was vouchsafed to this body by a source of undoubtable repute, a Grudge is hereby leveled against the being, spirit, force, ancestor, demiurge, and/or anthropomorphic personification commonly known as Ranald, believed to originate somewhere in our about the continent called The Old World, for the crime of theft of a disembodied Dwarven soul, which has subsequently been incarnated in the form of an Umgi.

Reparation or vengeance for said Grudge is to be postponed pending the full and proper evaluation of the consequences of those actions, which may be considered to mitigate, in whole or in part, those actions.

Witnessed and entered into the Book of Grudges by the High King.
"""

It was such a lovely evening he thought, but now the real (or was it) world was back again and he barely heard his family storytime in the background anymore, Heidi must have lowered her voice to not disturb him, that thoughtful woman.

"So... to summarize, the dwarfs main religious body, backed by a declaration from the high king..." he begun.

"Claim that one of my Lady Magister and titled Knight of the Empire was a reincarnated Dawi all along" begun dragomas, half way between confusion and amusement.

"Imply that she might be a favored soul of Ranald, who placed her in a soul of a human and most likely serve as her patron god" added the spymaster.

"And threatened to declare a Grudge of Blasphemy, which had previously been reserved to the chaos gods, against one of the Empire gods, regardless of however borderline ranald actual status is, he is still a recognized god, which is all the dwarfs care a about" finished von Bitternach, his voice surpassing worry and achieving a zen state of calm, which somehow made it all the more ominous.

It was while yet that Luitpold stood there digesting the information, all the while listening with half a ear to Heidi retelling how the hero had tricked the friendly dwarves into believing he used his magic sword to part the river to allow then to cross, when in truth he bribed three beavers and threaten two other into constructing a dam upstream, hmm.

"Dragomas, i need a full file on Lady Weber by sunset tomorrow"

"Very well"

"Von Bitternach do find me a priest of Ranald, i don't care if you need to go sewer diving or gamble streak or bloody well raid the town watch dungeons, i need a priest, and if none will come of his own volition we will damn well drag them in chains."

"Yes, your Majesty" the reply was somewhat harried, the good chamberlain recalling the last time he tried to trace a priest of ranald, he still had the two half sets of silverware missing, the incompatible halves at that.

"And my dear Spymaster..."

"Yes Emperor?"

"Find me what the hell did Mathilde to be retroactively called Dawi, will you"

As the four men continue to try and prevent the strangest of calamities the Empire had faced since a goblin stole the Royal Seal, a faint woman laughter could be heard from the Garden, as she finish telling her son of how Sir Ronald sneaked his way into the High King advisor council using nothing but a stolen coin, a promise of a grudge avenged and a tailored fake beard.

Zharr-Naggrund yes, but there's no mention of Ghrond.

Still need to run a few edits then, i'm less then familiar with capitalization rules, is it only sentence starts that are missing or are there more?
You capitalize the starts of sentences, the word "I" and derivatives like "I'm" and "I'll", and proper nouns (names of a specific person or place). Here's a good rundown: Capitalization

On a separate note, this means that King Kazador might be sending a letter to the Emperor. As Mathilde is clanless and without immediate family, but still knighted, any intentions to court her would have to go by her direct liege.

She's now a Dwarf so there should be no impropriety with attempting to get one of his sons with her.

More importantly Runecraft?
If we want to learn Runecraft, we might find more luck in Karag Dum, if it still stands and its Runemasters still live. They were seemingly more radical before it was cut off, and I can't imagine spending two centuries in the Chaos Wastes would decrease that radicalism. If we manage to earn enough of their favour, they could agree to buck the tradition some more.

I'm gonna guess that the witness was Grombrindal.

He and Ranald met at a random campfire in the wilderness, and then Grimbi agreed to play a game knowing what he'd be asked to do.

So Roswita, and not the Emperor.

She is a Knight of Stirland.
Point, but as it's a rather formal request I think it'd go by the emperor's diplomats.
inb4 a bewildered Panoramia finds herself being challenged to duels by Kazador's other sons for Mathilde's hand in marriage, Kazrik claps her on the shoulder in solidarity at the shenanigans of his family.

Similarly, Kasmir believed Abelhelm is with Sigmar, not in Morr's gardens.
While definitely true, it should be noted that "believed" in this case is very much a "because I really don't want to think about what the alternatives would mean".

Kasmir asked various Morrite priests to try and figure out what happened to Abel's soul and got no definitive answer. He then chose to believe that Sigmar let Abel die because the Count was urgently needed in Sigmar's own realm, partly because it's one of the few ways a Sigmarite can explain what happened at Abel's fall and partly because if a soul doesn't end up with either Sigmar or Morr it usually means something horrible is happening to them.

Of course, this is still means that Kasmir 100% believes that Sigmar can and will take care of wayward souls. It's just that, in true priest fashion, he has no proof for Abel's location beyond Faith.

People are assuming Ranald would have stolen a soul from Gazul, but my money would be more on him stealing one that was in trouble otherwise—you know, grab it on a lark when otherwise pilfering from an asshole god and set it to reincarnate human cause it's funny. Keep half an eye on it just to see what happens, maybe throw a few coincidences her way to keep things from getting too boring or ending early.

Then things start getting interesting. Like, more so than he could have anticipated. And he supports her and eggs her on all the way, because it's Ranald and why not?

And now it's gotten to the point where the string of events and consequences is weird and implausible for him, and all the sudden the dwarf gods take notice. And have no real concept of who owes what to whom.

Gunnars, way back in the talk before we toasted the Eight Peaks waaagh, said that dwarven souls who aren't redirected to the dwarf afterlife may wander before making their way back. Maybe Ranald found a dwarf soul wandering around, gave what help he could, and sent her on. Hardly seems like that would be bad.

Then again, Gunnars said that talk dealt with grudge-worthy secrets. Perhaps they can't tell that version? Still, providing aid to a lost dwarf soul doesn't sound bad.

Well obviously one in the Glittering Realm is secured beyond the reach of thieves, but one of the poor unfortunates in the Warp who never received proper rites might not be.

Right, I agree completely. But the subject under discussion was someone's assertion that Mathilde would want her soul to go to Ranald, and then someone's objection that Ranald isn't a god of the dead. Whether Ranald or Sigmar or whoever can objectively and truly take care of people's souls after they die is immaterial, pun 100% intended: the question is whether or not Mathilde, a devout person within the setting and without access to the sourcebooks, would believe that Ranald can do this. And I think that's pretty likely.

Tangentially, if there's any truth to the contention that Mathilde has a repatriated dwarf soul, my bet is on "repentant Dawi Zharr who wanted out of that pit of bad news." Stealing from under Hashut's nose fits Ranald pretty well.

This is just guesswork obviously but if it was one of their sorcerers that would explain how she came out a magician without involving Ranald giving out magic in spite of the lack of a domain over it.
