The problem i have with recruiting Max (or Johann) at this point, is that we are not committed to going ourselves, so asking them is a though sell for me.
Little to worry on this point, most people voting to ask them to go intend to go themselves.
E: Also they're guaranteed Magister-grade at the least(yes, even Max, he's just not actually gone and done the tests, much like Panoramia, since the benefits didn't matter for him and he could learn most any spell if he wrote Expedition To The Chaos Wastes), whereas our recruitment is most likely to get either Journeymen or Magisters with an Agenda where the Wastes may be useful.

As far as papers go we'll probably also be able to do a paper on the Staff turning as well. Making staves from dragon bone is apparently fairly uncommon and Mathilde may be the first person to do it with a Shard Dragon's bone with Ulgu. It should be worth at least a short paper saying whether it's worth it or not.

As far as having Max/Johann start training for the Expedition or having them research items I don't see that much of a difference between the options.

If we have them train then they're still free to grab items from out collection and study them on their own time. Since they know the items are about to be claimed by the Gold Order they know it's their last chance unless they want to leave K8P. Since it's not on company time we won't be able to stick our name on any papers they produce though.

Get the band back together!

Mathilde to scout dungeons, kill bosses, and lead the wizards.

Johann to break formations and champions with his fists and steel staff, aim artillery and run as an outrider.

Max to ride the steam wagons, lay down volumes of fire from hardpoints, and solve problems with materials or scholarship.

Estabin and Senja, for near in cavalry support and preventing fights with those monsters that are ghyran, not chaos or dhar. Also comic relief as Mathilde continues her tradition of walking in on them fcking. Maybe good for thoughts of romance for herself!

And it all starts with the two golds.

Vote Plan Redshirt v2!
That's fine and all, but we could also meet NEW friends.

I think by this point we can all trust BoneyM to come up with interesting people for us to meet.

  • Getting a Perpetual Apprentice to serve as assistant/general minion
You can put the offer out, but it's up to the individual PAs whether they take the offer. Two favours a year would be standard for those in a more convenient location, four would probably get you someone.
Anyone have any ideas what we could use this for? Having an extra hand to do things for us or help out sounds useful in the abstract, but I can't think of any specific things where we'd benefit from having an assistant or minion.

Might come in useful for wrangling the research facility, should we get one. Otherwise, nothing. Mathilde's not really in a position where a PA would be necessary, and for the spy stuff there's the Hochlander already.

I'm not really worrying (much) about sending them without us.
Mostly i just feel it is the wrong order to do things to send people before making our decision in character.

Hochlander's doing that, and for free too. Actually speaking of, what, narratively, would've happened if we never hired the Hochlander? We seemed entirely able to handle the EIC's intelligence apparatus before bringing him in.
EIC intelligence aparatus was, and kinda is, unfinished.
The point of hiring the guy was so we could have them do most of the work and actuallyget some use outof EIC as intelligence gathering tool.

Wrong way round with how Boney runs the quest. By asking them to go we're soft-committing ourselves to go, but Boney never ever forces the quest to take a direction, so that decision won't come until the time comes, OR if theres enough dispute, we may get a meta decision vote after doing one or more commitment actions.

Certainly Mathilde is already planning to go to the Wastes at a minimum, and the preparations for scouting versus joining are marginally different.

Doesn't seem like the dude's doing irreplicable work. We still spend the same amount of AP as before, the same overall effort and screentime, for the same results. Doesn't seem like it'll change until we fully hand it off to him.

There is going to be a vote on wether to go or not, i think next turn, so the recruitment should happen afterwards.
Boney does not force us to take a direction, but there are occasions where we vote on it, like when suggesting jobs for us to Belegar, or picking where to go after Sylvania, or voting wether to go or not.

It's been like two updates, it seems a bit early to judge his efforts so far. Also he introduced some new options for the EIC when he assumed command.

The new options sound good, but on the matter of the handlers, for example, doesn't seem like he got more work done than we would've if we'd done it ourselves. Like, the work he's done is solid and faultless, but doesn't look like we'd have missed out on anything if we'd just done the job ourselves.

Ehh, it's a step towards the direction of stepping away from it. Rather than look at it as "We could have done the job ourselves", think of it as "He did just as good a job as we would have".

@BoneyM, has the equivalent of the Islamic Golden Age happened in Araby? Their lack of a printing press suggests that either it's ended, never happened, or hasn't started yet, but not sure which. I'm curious about their level of science, especially in comparison to the rest of the Old World. We know a bit about their magic from lore snippets here and there, same with their economy and political makeup, but not really much about their academic status and scientific achievements. I don't think this is very relevant to the quest, not until and unless we do our Great Library at least, but your worldbuilding is fun and I want to know more.

Speculatively, I would guess it's mostly the last two or at least happened much less, because Araby lacks two factors that influenced the historical Islamic Golden Age: placement and imperialism. The Abbasid Caliphate at its height stretched from Italy to India and could sweep up scholars and manuscripts from all these places to concentrate in places like the House of Wisdom. But Araby in Warhammer isn't even on the silk road between Tilea and Ind, let alone ruling most of it.

With Albion being so secretive, though, and the way the Warhammer World looks, I imagine Araby is well placed to take up a chunk of Britain's approximate historical role instead and have its golden age at a later time with more naval-colonial imperialism.
