Wonder if we can persuade the thread to NOT visit the slaver port of evil and slaving. I like shopping as much as the next indecently rich Grey Wizard but there are better places to pick up souvenirs.
Itza for example.
I didn't know people were talking about that until now, but now that I hear about it a variation on that plan doesn't sound like a bad idea. Just gotta swap out shopping for stealing. Thief god after all.

But as Redshirt pointed out, not only a thief god. It's quite likely the sheer affront to his Protector aspect that a slaver port represents would be his primary concern.
This is not in any way an endorsement of heading out there, mind.

[X] [ROMANCE] Elector Countess Roswita van Hal

Waa surprises by how good the Pan date was. Wanna check how this plays out.

[X] Wilhelmina Hochschild, to check in on her and see how she feels about the Marienburg situation.

Long time we dont visit, it even has some context excuse.

[X] Julia, to see what she has gotten up to as Stirland's most experienced spy master.

Will never give up on Julia.

[X] Regimand, to finally get the full story behind the Lahmian plot you were both ensnared by.

Finally!

[X] Karak Kadrin, to get to know the leaders of the Expedition.

Our top priority should be going to Karak Kadrin. We don't know the names of the leaders, what preparations they've done, who's currently listed as taking part, their timeline for the expedition and I don't think we've even passed on our notes on route yet.
It also seems like it would be kind of crazy to start hiring people and similar activities without even telling the expedition leaders what we're up to.

Edit: Also
[X] Julia, to see what she has gotten up to as Stirland's most experienced spy master.
Not for a good reason, I just want to do it.

Social vote options don't generally have any mechanical effect beyond progressing relationships and literally nothing about the dragon option has indicated that it's any different (It was on the starting list of relationships to pursue, not a write in). The idea that the dragon vote is a secret trap option is stunningly implausible.
We had one just last turn with very significant mechanical effects...

So, which options to try and hire a mercenary do people think is worth it?

Asarnil, of course. Those Skink Cold One riders would be just about perfect, being highly chaos resistant super-brawny light cavalry.

Beyond that, tho, I think Heavy Cavalry is a good generalized pick: it can scout better than dwarf infantry, it is the supreme non-dragon troop for fighting in a big open plain, and if the Karak is too narrow they can dismount and act as heavy infantry.

If we can do it again, those Demigryph Knights would be able to fight even inside the Karak, as murderous monsters in tight quarters should work very well.

Yes, but it wasn't based on a d100 die roll where Mathilde could have gotten better or worse outcomes. Similarly, Johann's gildings had effects, but they weren't a result of "did Mathilde get lucky enough on this roll."

It would be an enormously dick move if Boney had put the dragon on the list of romance options (a list that included most but not all characters), set the cutoff so that it moved on to the next round, put it on the list for social options, but then punished the voters for taking it. Like, that is "drop the quest and never touch anything they write again" levels of dickery. The worst-case scenario I can imagine is just "Sparklebutt is not interested in any sort of peer relationship and we have wasted a social action," and I am happy to offer good odds to people on the matter.

Mathilde is a dork to whom going against the grain has achieved results before. She's very intelligent but far from infallible.

Him giving us options is literally just giving us options.

It may be an option to stick your hand in a fire to see if your anti-flame enchantments work, but that doesn't mean it isn't your fault if you get burned.

Open allowance doesn't equate to lack of consequence. Seeking out someone to converse only for it to illicit a negative, perhaps even consequential, response is so very far from unheard of.

More importantly, Johanns blindness and the chamberlain of the seal weren't trap options, they were effectively narrative random events that Boney popped up for us by his own choice. The second Johann action was just choosing to continue that event.

I'd argue that it didn't, actually. Our trip to see Heidi didn't have any effects beyond possibly getting her interested in trade. The Chamberlain part came afterwards, and I suspect if we somehow took no actions in Atldorf we'd have been summoned to give our opinion on such, or perhaps it would have waited a turn.

When we sought out the Ice Dragon during the Waaagh to have a conversation, that was a dangerous option that could have fucked us up. But social votes are for people we can safely socialize with. We've never seen one that we chose to take that's actually changed things, just changed when things happened or whether Mathilde was there for it.

Again: I will offer you good betting odds, because I don't believe negative results from Sparklebutt social is at all likely and am willing to put my money where my mouth is.

I agree with the general gist of your argument, but dislike the figure of speech. Are you expecting them to provide a PayPal address or something? Even if you were dead serious and the other person somehow went along with it, putting money on random internet musings where the person you're talking about can see is essentially either asking them to decide which person will hate them, or forcing them to choose a third option that leaves neither of you satisfied.

This isn't something that you can involve money in.

Boney, I did have a question- you said recently that the spiders were determined to be communicating through super-high or -low sounds, I think... (Will edit if the search doesn't back me up.)

The spiders all lack any mechanism to create or detect noise far outside the human-detectable spectrum, indicating that their means of inter-We communication is likely to be magical.

But Johann's initial autopsy kinda rules that out? I'm not sure what the actual method we think is in use.

Edit: here's the WoG I was thinking of-

If they are able to hear the main We cluster, they revert to its control. If they can't, they don't. There is no communication without that aural link.
