[X] No, but they could help break the blockade
The canals would let them funnel trade through dwarven polities instead of Marienburger interests; the state-level benefit of the course of action is lucrative. If Karaz Ankor does do this they are going to expect the empire to repay the debt somehow. Seems like a bad idea to ask them to unless you have a idea of how the empire plans on paying back the debt.

Marienburg has its own magical school, and the last time the Empire and Marienburg came to blows, Elven Wizards got involved. And the Marienburgers aren't exactly slouches when it comes to knives in the dark. This sort of complete domination definitely can't be guaranteed.
Yeah, lets use some of the only safeguards against large scale Chaos effects as a political tool against the High Elves. No way that will go wrong... You start threatening stuff like that and not only are you hurting yourself but also risk a far heavier reaction from Ulthuan and I am pretty sure disastrous wouldn't be enough to describe the effects of that.
Having it either would have meant pulling a darakenhoff and losing the loot/not confirming the kill, or it would have been useful solely to carry more loot.
If Belegar requested a project which could be effectively achieved by the construction of a flying dreadnaught my answer would be along the lines of Fuck Yeah.
This is entirely to do with its value as a Boon really. As a Boon, it should be something we want and value in its own right. As a job fuck yes.
The College jumble sale is considered quite an event by some of the braver residents of Altdorf.
Technically, the Imperial Engineers School in Altdorf. That does effectively mean the Emperor.
Anything he discovers or rediscovers is his to share or not share as he sees fit. If pressed, Kragg is likely to say something like that if anyone doesn't like that, they can get Thorek to look at it and rejoice in the absolutely nothing he is able to discover, and in the nothingness he passes down to the Apprentices, of which he has more than beard hairs, which speaks so much of his lack of discernment that no more needs to be said on the matter.
I'll run out of ideas if he gets one every time he's on screen. Mathilde will get him nice things for major milestones.
Actually, how long do wizards live? Human wizards, I mean. Because Dwarfs lives for centuries. Possibly millennia. Whereas the usual human wizard, even a powerful one, is probably lucky to live past a century.
Since the debate seems to be dying down, I wanted to go back to what we should be doing next turn. Personally, I would like to continue improving enchanting next turn because it is significant or potentially relevant to a number of our mid term goals or potential projects:
- Better Robes - Relevant for Elfcation and general survivability, especially if we can add our indefatigable mastery
- Staff - Relevant for Elfcation and general magical mastery.
- AV research, more knowledge of enchanting can only help us with this research. It might also give us a bit more info on how power stones are usually used in enchanting (if there is anything beyond being a bigger battery), which would seem helpful to know if we're trying to get a reaction out of AV.
- Advancing our Windherder trait - for multiple wind enchantments collaborating with other wizards. I hope we get some actions to put this sort of thing into practice.
- Potentially - Knowledge of how the magic can be woven into items may (may) be helpful with the Coin research. Or in reverse, examining the coin may grant us insight into different ways magic can be woven into an item
- Windsight for Runesmiths project - obviously helpful
- Potential Defensive map of the Karak - Would absolutely be necessary if we did the project. Might be a nice project to align our personal development and work goals. That said I don't see a good reason to spend an action learning the lesser magic version of our own MMAP since we can already reliably enchant our own version into things and we're beyond the point where simply filling out the spellbook will grant us any more magic points. So I see no utility in spending an AP on a simpler version of something we can already reliably do when we're already stuck in AP hell.
- Waystones - Potentially important here.
Piecing together scraps of canon, my current best guess is that Thyrus Gormann is Supreme Patriarch from 2503 to 2519. 16 years multiplied by Gelt's melodrama could qualify as 'long standing prominence'.
Because having to keep a Wizard tied up in a magically-neutral room for six months or so until the urge fades is seen as a valid price to pay for them throwing around twice as many fireballs or whatever when this decade's apocalyptic threat knocks on the doors of Altdorf.
Not only is it still around, it is availiable to all armies except the dawi, because it's a corebook common magic item.
Empire? Has it.
Brettonia? Fine with having their priestesses read from it.
Slann? Read it.
Elfs? All three tabletop factions have copies.
Orks? They have it too.
It being such an obviously cursed item makes, frankly, zero sense.
Guys, we already read one super magic book of evil temptation, and are currently advised specifically to get anti-chaos training. Let's not go for round two, yeah?
I mean, it's a book created by the Chaos Gods to corrupt mortals. I'm perfectly willing to believe that it just randomly pops up in libraries.
Ulthuan knows about the grey wizard Loremaster of Karak Eight Peaks, so we'd need to deflect attention from ourselves specifically. Getting to it and then smuggling it out is easy enough with shadow magic; the real difficulty is establishing a cover story for why it couldn't possibly be us.
There's a typo here, it should read:
-Amber Order - "Caw Caw motherfucker."
The empire should plan on giving the dwarf some very favorable trade deals in that case. This is very clearly a case of the empire not being able to handle itself and counting on the dwarfs to make up the slack. This entire problem is empire created. The Empire will repay its debt by sending trade through the new canal.
[X] They can make up for the loss in trade
If we don't vote for the "they can pay you back" option he apparently won't even know that that option exists. At that point the only option is to either take the option we voted for - go to war - or not. And it's not going to be "not". The structure of the vote and how Mathilde is apparently going to be handling it indicates that we are making this choice.I think people are forgetting that this is an advisor asking for our advice, not us making the choice. Is it fair or a good idea to mislead him because we are personally more afraid of a war possibly breaking out and hurting the dwarves? No, we should be honest, the dwarves will not take this lying down
Could it be something that could be tried by poking Marienburg around a bit? As long as it is deniable enough it'd at least provide valuable intel on how committed the elves are to Marienburg's success.
To be fair, Marienburg is currently threatening a blockade rather than actually having declared one. If the Empire claps back to Marienburg with "You do that, and we'll call in Barak Varr to wreck your everything - and they'll do that." the chances that Marienburg will actually go through with declaring a blockade rather than trying to for some minor diplomatic concessions as deescalation are much more likely.Hmmm. I am leaning this. Knowing that this involves blowing up their navy and river-blocking infrastructure and then pointing a giant gun at anyone who may be tempted to rebuild is more than I expected this to mean, though. Land invasion is an absolute No, but I worry that this will also be very incendiary. Tanking the losses by brute forcing overland routes until it is done is the peaceful workaround but god that will hurt.
Okay, it'd cost the equivalent of tens or hundreds of billions of dollars. The equivalent amount of trade would be somewhere between the EU and Germany, which is north of a trillion and a half dollars as of 2017, which is around ten times that amount.I'd expect it to cost the equivalent of tens or hundreds of billions of dollars. So, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a big pile of money set aside for dealing with exactly this kind of complication.
That is not how independence movements work. We all reach back to an imagined past to galvanise support. I garuntee you that since independence the rulers of Marienburg have been paying for street performers to perfome plays about how perdiferous Sigmar invaded and subjugated them and how the magnates who baught the cities freedom are grand patriots who represent the best qualities of all marienburgers. It was brought into Sigmar's Empire by conquest millennia ago, you would have to be a historian to know or care. That may have been a good excuse to seceded, it was not the rason why the incredibly wealthy magnates bribed Dieter.
