Insofar as I have contributed to this, I apologize to the thread; I have been trying to make a case "for" the stuff I want to see, rather than "against" the stuff currently beating it in the polls, but, uh, I've posted about it a bunch, and I'm not perfect, so I'm sure I've slipped. So for the remainder of the social turn voting period, I will sit on my hands as it regards this particular topic.

Instead, here is an unrelated topic of discussion. Assuming we don't get anything unexpected thrown into the works (an assumption that does in fact sometimes bear out, even in this quest!), next turn we'll have a bunch of personal actions available. What should we spend them on? We'll need one to dictate to Max, and we should probably check out AV's interaction with dwarf runes before we involve a runelord, but that leaves two. Some options:
  • Finishing up the second dictionary in the same turn? It's more efficient, actionwise, to spread the writing of the second dictionary over two turns (it lets us turn a Serenity action on the turn-after-next into a Mathilde action next turn, which is really useful), but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this.
  • Practical diplomacy class? This is an important skill to have, especially if Belegar assigns us to a Waystone project after we wrap up Queekish.
  • Powerstone class? This unlocks part of the AV tech tree and might come in handy in unknown other ways having to do with high-energy magic.
  • Controlling one of our Arcane Marks? The practical benefits of doing so are unknown, but maybe it would make us more respectable among other skilled magic-users.
  • Another research action? Poking at Ranald's Coin would at least give us an idea of what lies beyond that. Alternately, there's only one more We action to take before we can write the book on them.
  • Something I've left out?
I 100% support the diplo class; diplo continues to be mathilde's greatest weakness, and that, plus a couple more race/society diplo skills would be great for rounding out her skills

We don't know exactly what the Practical Diplomacy class will do. My guess, at the very least, is that it would bump our Advanced Colleges of Magic diplomacy skill (currently at 2/3). It would be very nice if it bumped our Empire of Man skill (currently also at 2/3). It would be amazing if it did those things and also gave us something else, but a +2 Diplomacy from those two each leveling would be aces.

I think a Power Stone class is more important. We need it for AV and that's pretty much starting to be our current focus.

I doubt that it would do anything for our Colleges of Magic Diplomacy. Remember that one of the focuses of the Grey Order is diplomacy; this indicates that the Practical Diplomacy class will focus on learning things that would be considered important for a Diplomacy Adviser. How to deal with Burghers and Nobles within the Empire, and how to deal with major external groups like Dwarfs, Elfs, and nearby human nations. There is a good point that Action Hell is not going to get better, though.

I don't think it would make us more respectable to other magic-users so much as make us less creepy to everyone else on the first meeting.

also might make it easier to make new spells based on those Marks.

Shame that we can't get two masteries for one spell. It would be really cool to have our shadow throwing shadow daggers. Or stabing people.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what are the benefits for writing one of the dictionaries early? Why not both at the same time so Mathilde and Max can act as the other fail-safe: if one of them doesn't write a successful paper, the other can swoop in and give them a reroll. The narrative is much stronger if we end up both dictionaries at the same turn, not one after the other. Plus I don't want the Empire and the Grey Colleges to have question about our loyalty if we end up the Kazalid one first.

Are you implying that the Ancestor approved indexing of Grudges is bad? That's a Grudgin'.
I don't think that the Ancestors ever expected such a huge backlog of Grudges to build up.

Spitting it between two turns means that we can use the tower of serenity twice.

Max can't work on it without us dictating to him, and if he is taking dictation, than we'll finish that lexicon in one turn.

We can just explain our reasoning though? A rational adult, making well thought out descisions can present their reasoning to other rational adults and not face censure provided they share similar values.

"While I do hold loyalty to the Empire, in my role as Loremaster of K8P, and working on the orders of my King, I did the dwarf one first. The alternative wouod be waiting untill both are complete, or focusing on something at the expense of my assigned task, which may potentially damage Empire-K8P relations"

Ideas for what training our shadow might lead to.
  • Our shadow being able to throw and stab with shadow daggers.
  • Our shadow being able to hold things that we cast substitute of shadow on effectively giving us an extra pair of hands for carrying loot.
  • More flexibility with using Burning Shadows because we have a shadow that we can control.

I really hope we poke at the Coin soon. I've been waiting for years for us to use our Avatar trait's research possibilities, and we never quite seem to get around to it.
So now, I will deploy the ULTIMATE ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF COIN STUFF!

It can synergise with AV research! More understanding of magic, belief and the Warp has to be a good thing to unravel the mysteries of Aethyric Vitae!

Or more directly, one of the possible AV actions involves exposing it to divine power and seeing how it reacts. We can't begin that line of inquiry without researching the coin and getting a better idea of what divine energy is.
