Magister then Dwarves makes sense to me. We just need to remember that expectations will be higher for a Magister than a Journeywoman.

A) Introduce Ranald to the Skaven, hopefully triggering internal schisms and 'holy' wars to fracture their nation. B) Take the thieves, cut-throats and assassins of Miragliano and forge them into an Order of Smoke Knights (basically European ninja). C) Bring Miragliano under the rule of the Empire, by whatever means seem the most entertaining at the time.

A) How do you want to introduce Ranald to the Skaven? Aren't they pretty much comitted to the Horned Rat? And won't they kill Mathilde on sight anyway?
B) Now idea about feasability, but sounds interesting.
C) I don't know. Miragliano is far away from the Empire and there isn't any connection that doesn't pass through Trantino or Carcassone. It is however right next to Bretonnia, and I doubt they would be happy if the Empire decides to expand into their backyard.

It is valid and would likely be accepted but would also likely lead to even more scrutiny.

The debt is actually to Stirland. If you think now might be a good time to cut your repayments, you could do that.
Unfortunate.
Would Wilhelmina be willing to run the Factory but keep it off the official EIC books so we can have an income?

You might have started by checking that I was, in fact, the person you accuse me of being. Up-till now I have not advocated for or even mentioned them. I have seen other proposing them and while there has been little interest there didn't seem to be much objection either, so I included them in the suggestion.

Frankly while this quest has been for the most part excellent the last few turns have been anything but enjoyable. No fault to you as the author, the execution has remained exemplary, but nonetheless. My favourite NPC dies, in pathetic and humiliating fashion, despite everything we could do. The replacement NPC turns out to be an arsehole who kicks us out of our job. A job which the PC, and thus the quest, were basically built around. The voters managed to calm down and try to make the best of things… which results in the replacement NPC proving WoG wrong by being just as much of an arsehole as we thought. Oh and the development we tried failed miserably. It seems like all we achieved, all we built and all we hoped for is crumbling turn by turn.

I have been desperately throwing ideas out in hope of turning the quest somewhere, anywhere that isn't just going to be more of the same. That isn't just going to be depressing reminders of all that might have been. (Or another trip into Dwarf Vietnam.) Thus far with little success.

Sorry for venting. I'm off for a while. With luck I can return in a better headspace.

That's my bad, then. Apologies.

Is this view widespread? Has the quest become unenjoyable? It's not the first time it's been said, and if the bottom has fallen out then there's little point spending the time I do on it.

There's an argument for being there from the start, tho.

Absolutely. If we can choose to do any of the other stuff first before going to Karak Eightpeaks, then I'm all over it. I'm not interested in charging headfirst into another dwarf hold without doing some of the more important(at least in my mind) stuff first. Besides, we're not going to be there from the start anyway. It's already been ongoing long before this new guy took over after his father fell and it's already been a turn(year) or two since it happened. So uh, no, we're not going to be there from the start. Besides, even if we come in late and are seen as an opportunist(quite unlikely seeing as we have like the 2nd highest dwarf rep currently), it doesn't matter so long as we contribute enough or do some major deed to overcome that perception.

@BoneyM people always complain about things going wrong in quests but the easiest way of telling whether people are still enjoying something is looking at the number of participants and how much discussion is occurring.

I for one really enjoy the setback(s). Most quests are an endless sequence of successes upon successes and that can get boring. Failing here and failing even though we tried our best makes the story more interesting.

Competent is too close to proficient and 'talented' implies something different than a level of acquired skill. I ended up calling the 'advanced' Greatswording 'Expert' instead. I suppose beyond that would be Master.
How about "Greater"?

It seems like a good time to examine where we are going and how we intend to get there.

Short term:
We need to go do our trials. We have three basic options as I see it.
1) Just go do the trials, relying on our existing knowledge and accomplishments.
2) Spend half a turn cramming spells into our head, overwork included, then do the exam.
3) Spend one turn doing a bit enchanting, a bit of spell study and a bit of other work. Then take the test next turn.
Off hand I favour 3 but I can see reasons for each.

Medium term:
I had wanted to keep working for the betterment of Stirland. However the EC, however polite she tried to be, dislikes us enough that she couldn't even be bothered to send us a 'No thank you.' message. Her sypmaster is likely to be just as bad as he is probably the one that taught her that opinion. Our fief is as unassuming as it first appeared and the loose end (the not openly hostile vampire) is gone.
So my plan would be to get the factory producing gunpowder then fold it into the EIC. Do a bit of work buffing the EIC. And otherwise just sink action after action into the research backlog. If Stirland needs us they can get in touch through Wilhelmina or Anton.

Long term:
It is entirely possible that the situation in Stirland will change. If so, if we are called then I am all in favour of answering. However it may not. It may be that when we finish our research the EC and her spymaster will still consider us 'surplus to requirements'. If that is the case then I say it will be time to move on.

I propose we go to Miragliano, the most northern of the Tilean cities. <snip>

Thoughts?
I favour getting the trials done ASAP. Mathilde is published and accomplished; spell cramming has a high failure rate and Regimand was already prodding us to test for Magister before we took down Drakenhof. Mathilde has certainly proven herself now. Besides, Journeymen are supposed to journey, Magisters have a lot more support for sitting around researching all the spells. Which to me suggests that a visit to Miragliano (or any Tilean states, many opportunities to be spymaster!) should happen before research backlog clearing, with the trials between those two.

Producing gunpowder would be good, but I don't see the benefit of folding it into the EIC.

Might as well return it.

Also, I've already said my piece earlier. I ran away from this quest when the one True Van Hel died, and came back to fall in love all over again.

Sure, it Started as an Advisor Quest, but it's grown to a true Wizard PC in Warhammer Quest. One of the best I've read. You need tragedy to make the victory more sweet.

Well, unless your Lizardmen. Then you just need to say 'Fuck You Chaos, I Win!' And cast Deliverance. But Lizardmen are cheating cheaters like that.

That's one good thing at least. Burning half of personal gold is unwise. That standard issue still works.
Actually we'll be using the gold set aside for our knightly duties which we initially had over 1200 gold set aside in our account. Basically we're not going to have funding issues any time soon.

We also have over 400 gold in personal wealth which is only used for our living expenses. At our current rate of consumption we can hypothetically go over 200 years living just on our assets and the meager profits of our fief by which time presumably our trade company will have started raking in some better profits.

I'm expecting the magister exam to be interesting and for us to find a nice adventure soon enough so the quest is fine for me.

I do find the way Van Hal died to be disappointing though, not the fact that he died at all but the fact he died from an easily healed wound due to a lack of medical staff. Talk about a lame death for a great man.
