They are. But the Jades are in good favor with Shadow, so she'd probably have gotten more than one bored Magister

Or, being in high demand they might have been only able to spare one. The Light College could have been eager to jump at the chance to rub our nose in their power, after all, it's not every day that a Grey wizard asks for their help.

Ultimately it was a series of catastrophic rolls that lead to his death. If we go back and refight old votes we waste our time when we need to focus on what needs to be done.

[X] The vacuum must be filled. Step forward and takecommand. Fulfil Van Hal's final legacy in the manner that it begun.
[X] The Third Vampire War ended with the Grand Theogonist himself reading a Spell of Unmaking from a mere copy of the Liber Mortis. There can be no stronger precedent.

At least we've still got Asranil burning down Drakenhof Castle to look forward to, right guys?

How about we just burn the book?

Probably nonflammable, if it's that potent. Just seems like a reasonable precaution for the creator to take, y'know?

Abelhelm was probably clouded and shackled by that Van Hal and wasn't able to make a decision either way, so Mathilde burning it will be a likely acceptable closure for all involved. This also removes a giant target from Mathilde.

During the 13 centuries of consecutive witch hunters that served guardians of this relic, I am certain that at least one of them asked 'why don't we just toss the damned thing on the fire?' and presumably got a rather compelling argument against such a course of action.

Yep. Hah hah, very funny Boney, enough with the Darkest Timeline update.

Let's have the real rainbows and puppies one now, please. ;)
IF I wanted grim darkness and tragedy, I'd read the actual warhammer novels, not a quest
better yet, id watch the news.
[X] Reroll
I am being serious, shouldnt van hal have fate points he can burn or something

Yeah, best to hide it. If it must be studied, limit solely to dismantling such arts.

Goods this hot are too dangerous to remit to an organization, because you just can't protect against this level of heat with anything less than complete secrecy.

Well, the other reasonable thing to do might be to give it to the guys who already have a copy. They're already trusted with it, and trusted to keep it safe.

Though I'd not be surprised if the Amethyst Patriarch asks us some pointed questions about Van Hal's possessions.

[X] To hell with the campaign; Abelhelm Van Hal was failed. Find the Greatswords, find the officers that were to be leading the fourth wave, find every man that did not stand shoulder to shoulder with Van Hal, and extract answers and then extract justice.
[X] Do nothing with it; your role is to safeguard it.

A copy doesn't make you a priority target for top level schemers to subvert your entire organization from the ground up just to get it.

And such things are entirely plausible. A copy won't be enough to put that level of attention into it. The original is enough.

Or BoneyM would have rolled for it, like he rolls for most things, and we could have gotten anything from a journeyman to a patriarch.

Uh, you can see from the narration. We got bonuses to the roll from College Contacts from our master, who knows people in the other Colleges. Except for the Light and Heavens colleges because theres a feud there.

So for Amethyst college, we got our request passed up the line, then they decided it warranted the Patriarch himself to show up
For the Light college, we never got past the doorman. He never even went back in to ask, he just told us that "Oh the college is busy, I'm coming because I'm bored."

This sucks but shit happens, I just wish he had a better death than "overrun by skeleton mooks".

I have massive respect for @BoneyM for actually doing it though, killing a major NPC isn't something I've seen done often.

There is a point at which, as a Q/GM, you have to say "nah fuck it thats stupid" and fudge a roll.
because otherwise, you ruin everything you were doing and everything stops being fun
I say this as a GM myself

Well this quest is effectively ruined for me. That's it I'm out
Were you only here for the ship or something? Losing Abelhelm sucks, and we probably won't be able to finish the Drakenhof campaign, but neither the character or the campaign were the focus of the quest. Mathilde and her position are, and she still has both her life and her job.

And then there's the questions of "If the Knights of Morr, and then a Throng of Dwarves, and then a whole bunch of greatswords all went through that gate before us, how was there a wave of skeletons for us to run into? Where did they come from? Where did everybody else go?" That's not how towns are assaulted, nor how nobles fight. No noble fights without their body guards, specifically because that negates the point of bodyguards.

I mean, being the advisor to this guy kind of was the focus of the quest, though.

Hey it's not Randald's fault that he isn't a healing god and at least he tried comforting us.

[x] Reroll everything
Edit: you rate me funny but i am 100% serious

Well, Ranald could have done more. After all, taking the castle is like a mini-turn of its own, with its own actions (getting wizards' and dwarves' help) and all. And, well, during mini-turns we usually get (reduced)
Ranald's Blessing: Your shrine to him has attracted Ranald's blessing. Choose one action per turn; +20 bonus will apply where most needed during that action.
We didn't get it this turn, and I, for example, think that 76 roll was definitely the place where we most needed it. It's a pity that Ranald thought otherwise.

Not how the blessing works.
No; Ranald's Blessing take place over the course of months, not minutes.

@BoneyM Van Hal was a PC-level character in warhammer- did he not have fate points? I did not come here to get grief and sadness
