The thing about filling the vacuum is, we're no more capable of leading an army this update than we were the last. If you want to raze Castle Drakenhof to the ground (and I think we all want that), we should write-in a better way to do it than trying to rule when we have no precedent or talent for it (study the book study the book Unmake the Von Carsteins Unmake everything do it do it do it)

[X] The vacuum must be filled. Step forward and take command. Fulfil Van Hal's final legacy in the manner that it begun.
[X] Do nothing with it; your role is to safeguard it.

Realistically, how many methodical bridges would Mathilde burn by attempting to assume command over the army? And what's the success chance of such an act if Mathilde disregards the backslash for now?

He had children our age.... there would be no aunty shaninigans here. If anything I worry thus will be some weird love thing where we mourn his father together and the time spent together triggers that good ol van hal ship sense
New Van Hal: "I am 25 years old, Dame Weber. This is unconscionable. Just because they call you Rider of Dusk and Critsinger and all doesn't mean you get to treat me like a child!"
Weber, /conciliatory: "I know. I'm sorry, Van Hal. I just think it would be nice if you would wear the hat. It's a nice hat. Goes very well with your beard, you know. Why, your father-"
Van Hal: "I don't care what my father preferred!"
Weber, /chillingly: "Don't make me put you over my knee, young man."
Van Hal: "Get out of my office!"

Pssh. Mathildes already had that idea anyway, from reading Light and it's Properties.
True. And after Hysh, doping glass to react with magical light ia Ulgu's thing.
And no, it can be any shadow, per Realm of Sorcery anyway. The range is (nominally) 18 yards, barring double Crit rolls obviously.
I mean as per what we've seen in quest we got a more flexible definition. Even without a double crit.
So who's in favor of giving up our spot as spymistress to Wizard/study the Liber Mortis full-time? If we can reverse-engineer Bound Spells into an Ulgu-safe variant, who knows what else we might find in there to revolutionize the Empire?
Naw, I like the spymistress role, and it means we would be the experienced and trusted mentor for the next one.

Kasmir is probably going to get Depressed or Stressed out of this. Wilhelmina has her hands full with her own kids. Gustav is expected to die in a glorious charge(so much for that huh, Abelheim?).

Its down to either Mathilde or Anton showing the ropes.
I'm of the opinion that anyone learns the existence of the book will not let trivial things like law and due process stop the acquisition of the "everyone loses" book.
They're referring to keeping and studying but not using the book
I don't think it was so much the dice rolls being bad as much as the fact that we needed two good rolls in a row. A find a healer roll followed by an actual healing roll, with either of them being bad causing

Wouldn't be so bad if the rolls weren't so low. Anything but a nat 1 would probably mean delayed Light Wizard rather than miscast exploded.

Mathilde however is going to be so irrationally guilty about going to the Light college rather than the Jade.

The only way you might be able to persuade me to read the Liber Mortis is if Mathilde is turned into a vampire, and even that is a very long shot due to the fact that the reason vampires drink blood is that doing so is a drastically better alternative than going crazy from surviving on the Dhar reactor within them.

This is the fundamental issue with using necromancy in Warhammer as it runs on Dhar except is designed to shield the user from the worst effects allowing them to be directed crazy on a good day, but going insane from using necromancy is like gravity.

Not that many. Gustav won't be pleased, but as per Abelheim, we're already de facto 2IC for Stirland to begin with. We got respect from the troops and a noble title.

Also anyone who saw us come out of the crush of battle covered in undead juice or who saw us melt a small army probably isn't going to protest much.

If only there was someone who had experience reverse-engineering necromantic spells into Ulgu-safe alternatives! If only someone in this tent had that experience...

Its known to be studied for fighting necromancy. Knowing how spells are built helps with detecting and taking them apart.

The important part is not using necromancy itself...but as we've shown, you can steal good ideas from necromancers without actually using dhar.

It just takes a lot more work

She shouldn't be; they're both healing winds, and the Light college compounded that with anti-undead capabilities that could have saved a lot of lives, if he hadn't miscast and killed himself so thoroughly.

It wouldn't be using necromancy, any more than studying than Dhar matrix was using Dhar, though. The entire idea revolves around reverse-engineering the useful concepts in the book to be powered by Ulgu.

"Widowed, actually," he corrects, and smiles a little sadly at your look of shock. "Ancient history. She died in childbirth in '66. There's three little Van Hals out there, ready to carry on the family mission should this experiment fail, but nobody knows about them but a few trusted allies."
So it sounds like the youngest was born no later than '66, so would be at least 10 or so. Seems a stretch to assume the oldest is in their twenties? Mid-late teens, enough to need a few years of regency, perhaps.
