One thing I am looking forward to when it comes to Elfcation is to see the reaction of the elves to Mathilde. Like how that one Dark Elf sorceress reacted to her, that was incredibly amusing.

I don't think we know that elves don't bind apparitions to their soul.
Boney mentioned that the books we got from the Library of Mournings don't mention binding them to the soul. Rather elves seem to bind them into objects. I think it makes sense for how Boney has generally presented elven magic traditions and how they view human traditions.

Are there any theoretical suggestions on how to staple them to one's soul in the [Library of Mournings books]? Only to items or not at all?
Why would you staple an apparition to your soul when you could just put it in a horn or something?

I don't exactly how that went. A summary or a chapter number would be appreciated if you would be willing to provide.
Turn 39 Social part 3
She smiles at you, and then gives you a more calculating gaze that suddenly turns surprised. "Have you... pierced your soul with Ulgu? Repeatedly?"

You look down at yourself, and wave away some of the mist clinging to you. In Tor Lithanel there's much less smoke than in human cities, so currently most of it is perfume. "That would be one way to describe it."

"How do you manage that? Wouldn't breaching the surface tension of the soul that many times be ruinous to its integrity?"

"Not if it's performed from within."

"It's self-inflicted?" she says, looking closer with an expression of delighted horror. "We knew that you'd received some instruction from the usurpers, but hadn't realized you'd developed upon it yourselves in such a bold way."

The thing with the apparition milking that I'm worried about is that boney already warned us that if we were to try and gather up a bunch of snakes to trap in mirror boxes then at some point the snakes would "get the hint" and start doing something to stop it. If the colleges suddenly start hunting all apparitions ruthlessly I can see a response from the aeythr coming

I think the colleges have enough sense between them to not start mass slaughtering apparitions, because honestly that sounds like the sort of thing that never ends well.

Even if we could just lure more snakes, it getting stuck in this exact fashion was a 1 in a 100 roll. Even if we assume this is literally true (doubtful), that would be a lot of mirror boxes and a lot dangerous encounters. It's probably better to hope that the experts on such things among the colleges can come up with something better than trying to reproduce our insane accident, or launching into another personal research project we are barely qualified for.

@Boney if the real amazing thing was our showing "look what I did to this chicken these power stones, and here's how", that means that providing new OoS is not going to be an incredible thing.

1. Have you given thought to what we might be able to trade new OoS for, if we choose to make another batch [read: make Eike make another batch]?
2. If you have, might we be able to trade less than a full set of eight?
3. If we can trade less than a full set of eight, might we be able to offer to trade one to Cython?

4. For bedtime stories about the Clever Beings in Silver Ships?
We played our only "truly ancient knowledge" card to dunk on Hatalath. I'd like a new one please. Not even to necessarily use it, just to have it.
And feel smug.

I'm not talking about our specific method, I'm talking about a post boney made at some point that implied if we start hunting snakes on the large they would start getting wise to it and start retaliating, how? No idea but when 8 colleges start actively hunting any apparation they can get their hands on? I'm worried what response that can generate.

A part of me wonders if that might not be a Problem.
Technically, farming apparitions or miscasts for AV should be fine if you can spend the AV from it…
But it's still a Rift to the Warp.
I'm worried about one of the big four, probably Nurgle through the link to disease/flies being able to sneak a tiny member of the family into the AV and then instantly causing problems.
It's fine in Mathilde's case because 1. Divine intervention, the thing's probably watched by Ranald, 2. It's a Miracle the Asp screwed up the timing. But if everyone's running around trying to make the miracle happen…
I suspect a mostly stable answer to work out and possibly even 'safe limits' assuming we don't get too big of an incursion…
But the idea of Chaos weaponizing this method is somewhat concerning…
My REAL worry though, is that Wisdom Asp or any other Apparition getting some kind of 'bleeding a gate open' myth attached to them that enables them to bite through to Reality from the Warp, and as a result…
Free incursions whenever Chaos wants without one of the Four having to get off the couch and force it.

Making new Orbs of Sorcery to trade away is one of the least interesting things imaginable to do with Mathilde's time and resources. I will not be incentivizing it in any way.

4. For bedtime stories about the Cunning Beings in Silver Ships?

If Cython wants something, everyone will know it.

Understandable, but if we want to make Orbs to use in enchantments, though, what would we do with the non-Ulgu or Hysh orbs?

I do not think it would be legal to invite apparitions into the world for the purposes of bleeding them, grabbing the ones actively hunting wizards and bleeding them should be fine, but it will only get so much AV since unlike they snake they only have so much in them, not being in contact with the Aethyr. There is still going to be a hard limit on how many orbs you can make per year given by everything from the effort it takes to catch them and get the AV to finding wizards who are hunted.

One of the good things about this is that if you are a journeyman in the position Mathilde was at the start of the quest you no longer have to ask someone to help you with the thing that is hunting you, they will do it for free, or rather the other wizards will do it for the AV they can get out of the monster trying to kill you.

[X] Plan: Next arc boon.
-[X] We have no current need for any of this. Bank it until the Waystone Project is over and we've decided on our next project.

The next big advancement is the person who invents the reliable Apparition trap. Right now we have solved the problem of Orbs of Sorcery being impossible to make. Now we just have the problem that Orb of Sorcery manufacturing machines are impossible to make.

And honestly making an apparition trap is an entirely more solvable problem. I expect the Gold College to have knocked one out within the decade. It's worth too much money to do otherwise.
Well, we did build an Apparition trap by Thinking With Portals.

Or by "Yo dawg I heard you like portals so I put some portals in your portal so you can portal while you portal: Box Edition", in other words.

[X] Save the boon until we choose our next project
[X] Plan Pickle Requests mk IV

Changing my vote again because I think that saving the boon until our next project does make a lot of sense--that's when we'd really want something big to cash in to help with out new ambitions. The Pickle Requests plan is also appealing because it provides a bunch of tangible, immediate, and exploitable benefits that would both save us time and give us research options.

Ironically, making more orbs of sorcery is now not that gigantic a deal because we revealed how do it, so it should really be "your best bet is to figure out a nearly two-centuries-old magical mystery that tremendously advances the Colleges' understanding of magic".
I somewhat fear that to power the ship we need an Orb as well. Maybe multiple...
