[] [PORTATIV] Portentiv
[] [PORTATIV] Mathilde's Portentiv
Portentiv Portativ could also work.
Or Portentov Portativ Organ, but that may be abit mouthful. Which is partly the point with it of course.
Standard procedure is for the Grey College to send a gratis copy to every contributor, so they'd send one to the White Tower for them to pass on to Lathruai's next of kin.
I did not know that English used the word gratis until today.

Whoa hold up we finished the road? Good heavens, I thought Mathilde's contribution would speed things up by like six months, not by two full years. Hot damn that worked out well.

Their background roll had them not needing help puzzling out the enchantment mechanics, so with that turning out to not be a problem and getting a huge amount of enchantment materials they were able to really accelerate the timetable.

Makes me wonder how often papers crisscross the ocean between collages and the tower.

A lot less than the period when it became popular to cite Teclis as a contributor to literally every paper written by a College Wizard. Academic citation practices are susceptible to memes, as FDC Willard could attest.

Portativ (the name of the instrument) + portent (an omen or mystical warning). Since it's a portativ whose primary function is "warn the peasants when malign magic is afoot," it's a perfect name.

Its a portent:

noun
noun: portent; plural noun: portents
  1. 1.
a sign or warning that a momentous or calamitous event is likely to happen.
"many birds are regarded as being portents of deat
Thank you both. I wasn't familiar with that word.

Great chapter, I especially enjoyed the linguistic rabbit hole. Maybe one day we'll look into that ur-language!

As for spells, I'd prefer Eike to learn the spell list more or less in ascending difficulty, so nothing above Relatively Simple just yet.

I also feel quite strongly that we shouldn't have her learn anything Mathilde has a Mastery in. We don't ever think about it because it's redundant with Branalhune, but our Blessed Weapon mastery is actually pretty dope, never having to buy time to cast it. There's no shortage of spells Eike wouldn't benefit from Mathilde personally teaching her over a random Collegiate.

Agreed. Eike fights with greatsword and pistol, same as we do, and our version of blessed weapon could be really crucial for her on her journey, if she ends up as an adventurer or the like. The basic version is fine, but there's no need for it in her curriculum.

Think I'll second that, in some small part because there's a rather romantic part of me that wants Mathilde to teach Eike Shadowsteed as the final step of her apprenticeship. It served her incredibly well during her own Journey and the independence it offers is neatly symbolic - and, of course, it would be giving Eike one of the spells that Mathilde presumably holds closest to her heart.

Actually, can we personally teach Eike, i forgot?

Because yeah, teaching her our mastered versions would probably be better?

If we 're planning to codify our Masteries, Eike is actually better off in the long run learning the basic version of spells. That way she can develop her own Mastery of the basic spell and learn the new spell based on our Mastered spell.

I don't know that there's been any talk about codifying the masteries for Blessed Weapon or similar.

Getting Eike's Magic score up obviously takes priority, but I really think Shadowsteed should be on the short list once she can reliably cast it, as it was arguably the most useful spell in Mathilde's arsenal prior to acquiring a personal gyrocopter. She's known as the Dammerlichtreiter for a reason!

Being able to get around independently faster than anyone else is just amazing in a logistical sense, both as an apprentice playing gofer and as a Journeyman-to-be. Mathilde has outrun the speed of gossip, it's saved her in battles multiple times, and it's negated battles entirely. Remember that time in Turn 5 she ran into a pack of Beastmen on the road and just rode right past them because they couldn't possibly keep up with her? Remember the Steppe adventures? It makes it nigh-impossible to get stuck-in in a bad situation. It's as useful a defensive spell as Aethyric Armor, if not more so.

I'd say Mindhole would be a good pickup too, Mathilde's gotten a lot of mileage from that spell since the beginning. Probably not as useful to Eike as Mathilde's mastery of Shadowsteed, but worth consideration imo.

Mindhole is an excellent spell, but Eike has few years before journeying, and Shadowsteed is a more useful spell in general.
so for a spell that risks miscast, i would rather start with shadowsteed.

I have this image of two academic mages constantly citing each other in increasingly passive agressive manner as they try to prowe the other wrong which makes everybody roll their eyes at them. Why not just write a letter kind of thing.
Sounds like a good topic for a paper: The Courtship Rituals of Tsundere Academics

[] Name: Mechanical Hierarch

So, we've got an order of wizards that are associated with music and choirs and have a pretty good reputation about keeping people safe from gribbles. We even have one on the project.

So leaning into the style of names that gets us "Spinning Jennie" or calculator, let's name it after the sort of person that does the same task.

It lets Mathilde throw a little shade- 'a hierarch can be replaced by a bunch of tubes and a lot of blowing' while giving Egrimm a nod, and having a name that conveys the function.

Wonderful update, lots of crunchy bits to sink our metaphorical teeth onto.

Given that Eike started picking up the basics of Engineering, perhaps it'd be a good idea to do an engineering-based Gyrocarriage-improvement action with Adela and Johann at some point in the future? That might make it more appealing.

The [Portentiv] is an unforced, easily pronouncable one word pun with the same number of syllables as the original word.

It's on another level of silliness -- anything acronym based isn't going to cut it.
