... well. The image of Mathilde pointing her staff and just, dark fog boiling out to devour an entire army is fucking incredible. Count me in for cataclysm tier whispering darkness spell.

I think people are vastly underestimating the usefulness of Bodyguard. It's anti melee and anti-mobbing attributes because of crowd control (boney confirmed this as a description of what the rider will do, basically gallop around you clearing stuff out) is incredibly useful for us, and even more useful for the average grey wizard. Suddenly the usual solution of throwing melee at a wizard is not a smart idea. This would be a huge, enormous win.

Armies move what, 10-12 miles a day, at the high end?
You mean in the absence of magic, like when the hordes of Chaos invade? You may wish to fact check your assumptions against the setting. For example, how many days will the Chaos horde experience relative to the armies attempting to meet them in battle?

There is of course room to discuss why 10 miles a day would be the practical limit. The army moves at the speed of the slowest element after all. So one consideration would be the speed of the logistics train. Another would be the desire to keep the army fresh enough to fight a battle.

You wouldn't be able to use the cataclysm spell without a storm of magic, regardless of whether it's apparition based or not.
Thankfully, if we have sufficient warning ahead of time that the Cataclysm spell might be handy, we can make a localised storm of magic type effect by splashing several gallons of vitae around the battlefield. We'd just need to know to bring the stuff with us.

Would an Orb make cataclysm spell easier to cast? Can't you dissolve a powerstone to supercharge a spell or something? What would that do woth an orb?

Iirc boney said you could dissolve an orb, but that be a mighty amount of magic suddenly in one person and that might be a bit too much.

Edit: and frankly I think a battlealtar is probably worth more then a one off spell.

Nobody's tried it, but it'd probably be something like 'caster can cast one Cataclysm spell, it's impossible to counter, and then they die because they just consumed an energy ball the size of their head'. Their use in enchanting is generally what's focused on.

For all the people interested in getting battlemagic, we could build a battle altar. We're about to get an orb for it. That's (maybe) safe battlemagic with possible other bonuses.

We would need to have a battlemagic spell to enchant the thing with and we a) don't have any good battlemagic for it and b) can't enchant battlemagic yet.
We could probably pay to get it enchanted using whatever deed/massive favour pile that we get from making the orbs.

Though for that to work we'd probably need to make a second set so we actually have one of our own to put into the altar after giving the first away to the Colleges.

When the Colleges can build such things, they do so as contributions to the Empire's military, not for private individuals. Mathilde would have to build it herself, and then would probably still need multiple other Grey Wizards to crew it.
Battle altars are too expensive to be outsourced by an individual.

A Deed would suffice, I think. It can get us a Wolfship; a battle altar seems in the same ballpark.

Doesn't help with the crewing issue, though. And ultimately it would probably end up an expensive toy of little practical use, which with Mathilde hitting 40 makes it a mid-life crisis sports car.

If you want to get people on board with battle magic, I just gave you a way: start going full on battle altar. I'd be on board with that as a reason.

And we are working on the enchantment stuff, I think, by doing enchantments.

We could definitely build one. We can afford most of the expensive parts ourselves (the orbs and the favor).

They are too expensive to be bought by an individual, and most can't afford to make them, on top of the colleges owning all the orbs. Mathilde is changing that. We have enough favor for the latter. In fact, I'd figure what we'd do with it is 'rent' it out (instead of giving it to the college for a single favor exchange, we'd use it as a source of favor income) and use it when we needed it for personal projects also.

But what would we do with a Battle Alter? We don't have a Mammoth to help us carry it to battle:cry:
Shhhh, don't give away my chance of backdooring into a mammoth!

Do not invent Wizard Capitalism.
