After we're finished with the waystone project, I think it'd be good to take a bit of time off work on our side projects, maybe see whatever plot hooks end up dangling in front of us for us to bite.

well, big, whole old world events like Storms of Chaos/Vampire wars/Waaagh! Azhag are 'danger close' when it comes to canon.

so we might not actually get a choice if the empire goes 'all hands on deck'.

For individual self-improvement, I kinda want to take "[ ] Try to see through Pall of Darkness with magical senses" as a WEBMAT option with Johann and Eike. Probably on Turn 44 as a last-minute self-improvement action before heading off to Ulthuan.

If it works, it's a massive combat multiplier for us, letting us act against or avoid a completely helpless target with impunity. If it doesn't work, then it means Pall of Darkness blanks all magical senses as well as mundane ones, which is something very useful to know before we go into an area where immortal elves who want to kill us will likely have both.

Between Johann's magnetic senses, Eike's Intuitive senses, and our own "Best in Continent" visual windsight, that's a wide cross-section to work with. Pressing her Windsight like this may also serve to ping Eike's Awe trait into Windsage, which would be fantastic.

Either result may end up publishable, too.
I still want to squeeze in the Ward of Storms exploration for the last tick of Eonir Diplomacy (Advanced) and the narrative benefits that come from it, but I will admit you make a great point (though I'm not sure that's a valid WEB-MAT action? I guess we'll find out in a couple of turns).
I like your argument. I'll line up behind this.
Big same. I don't want to start massive multi-part projects, I want to finish all the little things that have been building up for a while.
Thanks. I'm glad to know there are others thinking along the same lines; I actually had intended to come out strong for Arcane Marks after Branarhune was done, on the grounds that it represented enough of an upgrade in our killiness that we didn't need to jump at Apparitions, but the thread was so enthusiastic about it last turnvote that I think there was no chance for a non-Apparitions plan to win this turn, so I shrugged philosophically and decided to wait.

That said, if a plan with Apparitions and a swing at the Sevir(o)scope wins this turn, which seems likely, it's kind of a home run in terms of narrative callbacks. We just visited the Golds and saw what they did with all the stuff we gave them. What were the most voted-for prices for the skaventech? The secret of Gehenna's Golden Hounds and assistance building a Sevir(o)scope. We didn't plan this at all, but it certainly feels like seeing what the Golds have done in the past seven years has lit a fire under Mathilde's butt to make good on the ambitions she had way back then and kept putting off for extremely valid reasons.

(Well, we did just turn 40, so a mid-life crisis is appropriate.)

honestly, the first big event in 'canon' that could be considered mathy's first 'old world crisis' during her life (she actually lived through a surprisingly calm point in history) will be Heinrich Kemmler finding Krell and leading a undead horde down the grey mountains into Knightland and makes a nuisance of himself there, the bits of the empire, and Athel Loren for the next 5-6 years.

its supposed to happen after the next turn. (2491)

fun.

Getting an attempt in at building a Seviroscope now is actually really helpful even if it fails utterly. Because if the latter is true and our most promising lead is a big squelch, then there'll be that much more of a push to use whatever shape of Deed we get out of Orbs on getting an all-star College team on doing the thing for us instead.

That is pretty fun. I also found it pretty funny that for all I felt like we delayed so long checking in on them, judging by their publishing history we actually tuned in at the exact right time. Just after they'd finished up everything they felt had promise.

Algard mentioned an undead Chaos lord in Bretonnia fighting an undead Maldred?'s forces, so Krell might actually be out-and-about.

No mention of Kemmler, though.

Well, we should probably see what plot hooks are dangled in front of us when the project is completed.

We didn't know about most of the job offers in the last job selection vote until right before the vote itself, after all.

If we end up going with the Red Riders this turn, which seems likely, then I'd like to actually focus on figuring out our Mantle of Mist and Unnatural Shadow arcane marks before we do any kind of binding of the Whispering Darkness.

Having a grip on the way our soul causes:
a) unnatural behaviour of our shadow and
b) guides movement of fog around us

seems like it would be very relevant when it comes to stashing an apparition in said soul which normally:
a) lives in shadows and
b) takes the form of a dark fog.

Keep laughing at the idea of Elfcation+Morbs at the same time. "Yeah we figured we'd give this hopeless human the equivalent of an unpaid internship for fun. You know how quick they burn out, it's the least we could do."

Mathilde crossing the border into shadow elfland with a cart full of barrels, cracking them open and just going "Okay let's fucking gooooooo!" As she spontaneously generates 8 orbs of sorcery.

as a celebration of 40 turns and 20 in game years.

A list of canon things that might or might not happen and potentially be Mathys's problem in the next 20 years. (40 turns.)

2491 to 2496: Heinrich Kemmler and Krells weird adventure:

2499: Grey Seer Thanquol attacks Nuln (probably not happening)

2500 to 2510: Waaagh Gnashrak (hopefully we messed this one up., but its Orcs and Orc ability to take attrition, so you never know)

2503 to 2507: Waaagh Rotgut ( same as Above)

2504: large warherd of Minotaurs, and no adult Karl to make a deal with Orion to work together to stop it.

2506: Melkhior's and Zacharias weird adventure across the old world. (as in Melkhior trying to kill Zach for trying to steal the bad book.)

2509 to 2511: Tamurkhan gross adventure in the border lands and South empire.

2510: Goblin Horded Spinny Backstab and Goblin Horded Gorblum the Magnificant.

I really don't think we need to consider any plans for 'after the Waystones' until we actually get there.

We have no idea what offers will be on the table. Maybe we'll take a Cathay-Vacay and bring the boys along.
I know it's just wild speculation, but I have had a few thoughts on this for a while that I wanted to share. I have seen some interest in an adventure to Cathay for a while, but we have been told there is not enough existing world building there, so I started thinking about what other long term plot hooks have been dangled.
Instead of Cathay, I am hoping that after Elfcation Boney gives us an adventure plot hook to go search for a Lustrian Dwarf hold. I think the hook might come from the rune-axe we found with the Druchii who had Lustrian gold.
a Rune-axe that causes Kragg to double take, stare at it intently, and then grab it and beeline towards his workshop, muttering thoughtfully.
Kazrik also mentions rumors of overseas Holds.
"The High King's doing," Kazrik says. "Ever since he brought news of our northern kin and was crowned for it, dreamers have been imagining holdouts in every Hold from Karak Zorn to Karak Vlag to Karaz Ghumzul, and some even gossip of Holds over the seas."
I am also hoping there is the possibility of going on an adventure to explore Karaz Ghumzul with Thorek. Unfortunately I vaguely recall seeing a WoB saying no to this idea, but I have not been able to find it.

I have also been counting my chickens too soon on this one, and have some ideas in addition to Servioscope. I am hoping that the orbflex is big enough that we could combine a request for help on the Servioscope with help enchanting gyrocopter (such as from the Celestials, see Mathymancer's list of ideas). This theorizing was before the start of the turn though, so I didn't anticipate being able to try Windherding the Servioscope with Egrimm.

That's all of my half baked unhatched chickens for now.

He's since said that the new material in TW gives enough to work with.

There's enough there with Cathay to work with now.

I expect he'd prefer for it to be a multi-turn trip to justify the effort it would take to fill in the gaps.

On the bright side, we're in no position to take the trip anyway, and by the time we are more Cathay DLC for TW will have released, or maybe even (god I hope so) the Cathay army book.

Did any of the goblin hordes come out of the skull river forests? They might come sooner and turn south instead of north if Gretel is pushing them.

He would indeed.
The greatest obstacle to this is not the distance, but the sheer amount of work it would take me to worldbuild Cathay almost from scratch to a point that it is visitable. You are going to need an extremely interesting adventure hook for me to even consider it. If we reach that point, then we can start talking about travel times.
He has enough to work with, but he also needs a good reason.
