Do we know where the heir will be?
Yes.
@Boney Since this is vitally important to deployment of Nadezhda Ice Witches, will Boris be with Kreml Guard, clearing the forest?
Meanwhile, the Tzar isn't going to be particularly exposed until the fighting starts:
@Boney, where exactly are the Tzar and the Boyars? On the path? How far away are they going to be from the forest clearing rotas?
They are going to be waiting with the bulk of the forces at Resvynhaf, right on the edge of the forest. So a considerable distance away.

So, to summarize: If you want someone on Tzar duty, you want Standing ready to respond with the Tzar and Boyars. If you want someone on Boris duty, you want Guarding the forest rotas as they expand and fortify the path.

I'm thinking Johann on forest teams to be close to Boris, ice witches on road patrol, and Mathilde scouting.
Maybe switch Ice Witches and Johann in the name of romance.

Well I hope those fortifications are solid, because marching alongside a river brings to mind the battle of Trasimene.

Well we can freeze the rivers so that should solve the biggest hazard should they ambush the army.
Trasimene was at least partially due to how long it would have taken the Romans to form battle formations, and the utter surprise with which they were taken. The lake was certainly not the decisive factor.

The woodcutters are the group most in danger anyway, I'd prefer the Ice Witches there even apart from any shipping.
The other group that seems likely to be in heavy danger is the city rotas doing the patrolling:
The other rotas will patrol the expanded path and stand ready to respond to any contact with the enemy along it.
They're the first-response force in case either the scouts make contact or the loggers come under attack. The Tzar and the Boyars are in the rear, ready to charge where needed: they'll arrive on the battlefield in force, but they won't arrive first. The city rotas will.

So currently I'm thinking Mathilde scouting, Ice Witches with the logging groups, and Johann on patrol. Johann is both very fast and very tanky: he's not super damaging in more than a 1v1 setting, where he's goddamn terrifying, but I think he's ideal to support the rotas and hold a battlefield until the figurative and/or literal cavalry arrive. EDIT: It's also a role that leverages his Windsight, helping the rotas not get ambushed by gribblies.

Yes. I actually mentioned that when i was talking about it. Shipping aside, you want the magical aid near the cutters.

Frankly, in general, i would like someone with magesight in every group that will be part of the forest working groups.

Interestingly, there's a reference somewhere (Bestiary of the Old World?) that the reason the dwarves don't like rivers is because the elves befriended the spirits of the Old World's rivers, the naeids, and they used their waters to attack the dwarves.

Hopefully the local forest spirits haven't recruited the water spirits, or they're not powerful enough to hit us with a flash flood.

So... clearing a forest path would be quite a time consuming endeavour could we try to investigate the boyar when he arrives if the elves haven't engaged yet?

A little-known but important part of Grey Order diplomacy:

(don't judge me, everyone watched it in the nineties)

Part of being a Grey Wizard is not just holding secrets, but using secrets: weighing the likelihood of a person you tell a secret to spreading the information and the potential danger if they do so against the utility of achieving a greater level of trust and familiarity with that person. Three senior Ice Witches are a fairly safe audience, and the mechanism behind the Miasma stopped being a very guardable secret once it started getting used on battlefields where enemy wizards were present.

I forgot there was already an Ice Witch present before we got two more, and I was so proud Johann got promoted to Senior Ice Witch.

He'll just have to wrestle some burly men as consolation.
