I really hope Faith doesn't win... But if it does win, I hope Ranald likes it and lets us use this anyway.
Unfortunately I've gotten a bit confused by these 60+ pages of back-and-forth about what exactly Faith means. Is there a chance that Faith leads to more Divine + AV stuff if Ranald approves of it? Or is Faith just "Prudence, but you let Ranald know it's possible"?

It's "don't count on Ranald doing what you want."

We do not know and have no way to know how he will react, and Boney has warned multiple times to not assume we'll be able to do [insert assumption about what Ranald will let us do].

Faith is faith, it is tossing everything at Ranald and letting him decide one way or the other. To guess what he would do you have to guess the mind of Ranald, though the GM did say if you want research vote research.

Close vote, huh? I think I'm going to stop following this so closely, it's giving me unpleasant flashbacks of the job vote, and that's never fun to remember.

In these votes, things can get pretty tense at the best of times and this time I get the strong feeling that some people are voting on the basis of RL values that they hold very dear, so even without things degenerating into name-calling or the like, this was more or less guaranteed to be a particularly intense vote.

not going to lie seeing the vote tally and the back and forth is actually anxiety inducing. Especially as it feels like discussion is actively harmful, seeing the number of people on both sides say they're changing their vote because of advocates for the other side when they vote.

it's very disheartening and discouraging.

Especially as the vote probably wont close for literally days.

Faith scenarios from best to worst -
1. Ranald likes what we're doing and helps our research.
2. Ranald is ok with it, and we continue, he still has our back.
3. Ranald is ok with it, just doesn't want us fingerprinting him, everyone else is fair game. Will back us on this.
4. Ranald is ok with it, but he doesn't want to be implicated, so he won't have our back if we get caught, but he is otherwise with us.
5. A combo of 3 and 4, we still have his favor for other stuff.
6. Ranald wants us to stop this line of research.

The option of him wanting to destroy AV is non existent imo, since Boney doesn't do trap votes.

Both Research and Faith are gambles. Research just pushes the gamble on Ranald's reaction to a later date, with slightly worst odds.

I rather take the odds on Faith.

Choosing to disclose information that involves a friend and respecting their boundaries is not unconditional submission. I think this is a case of fixating on the terms "Faith/Devotion/Sacrifice" and conflating their meaning.

No it's the direct meaning of the vote. Their relationship is frankly irrelevant, she's sacificing the potential to do anything with others gods via AV and submitting herself entirely to Ranalds Judgement and will do what Ranald wants afterwards.

The fact that the first crystal is Ranalds is ultimately irrelevant it's just what has been fixated on.

To use the flawed photograph approach it's walking up to Ranald with our camera showing him a photo and then sacrificing the Camera to him and the method to make more cameras and photos.

No, it is a case of allowing Ranald to define how we use the technique we developed for everyone and for all time. It is granting him power over the process far in excess of any moral imperative

We have direct confirmation that Ranald cares more about having us close to him that our own interests, if we choose to abandon research and sacrifice that progress to him then he will take it.

It won't matter if we he didn't care, or that he wanted the research, Faith is Faith and choosing that option will push more towards that path.

I for one have no interest in Mathilde becoming a priest, our relationship to Ranald is something I enjoy but it's one of peers, not subservience, choosing Faith changes that.

Here is what the QM has said on the subject:
Hrm, so... the intent of the Faith choice is all about drawing Ranald's attention to this accomplishment, then?
By sacrificing Ranaldian energy that Ranald did not create you would be revealing to Him that you are able to create and trap that energy, and by doing so inviting Him to pass judgement on it. It's not impossible that He'd give Mathilde a high five and tell her to go nuts, but it's definitely not something you should be counting on.
Basically, we are communicating two things to Ranald:
  • We can do this
  • We felt it important to check in with him about it
Beyond that all is speculation, which makes making a case difficult, but it is my belief that there will be a random roll, because that is often how Boney does things when Ranald is involved. I suspect a low roll will involve Ranald being annoyed with us and maybe withdrawing his blessing for a turn (so, no Coin boost on recruiting the Jades), a high roll will be some sort of cool divine buddy heist plot involving the fingerprints, and a median roll will be something neat he can do with AV on this side of the Aethyr because it makes divine energy of his that he didn't have to exert effort to put there. But these are, again, guesses.

But, ultimately, I'm not voting Faith because of mystery box rewards. I'm voting Faith because I like Mathilde's relationship with Ranald and I want to lean into it, not away from it. Every moment in this quest where Mathilde has been working in close partnership with Ranald has been a joy to read, and I want more of those, and if we vote Truth we will have fewer of those because we will be keeping a secret from him that it is important he not find out.

We've got a bunch of world-redefining research projects. We have only one god.

That's not uncomment in normal human interaction though. If you do something that steps over where you think the line is between you and someone else, apologizing and saying you'll never do it again is pretty common. If they reply with "nah, you're good; I don't mind" then they're deciding "for you" in the same way you seem to find so objectionable here.

Ritualistic sacrifice of an entire field of study and all the things unknown that may be found thereof are 'not uncommon in human interaction'? I'm sorry this is not anything for which there is any normal human interaction. This is Marie Curie deciding to destroy her whole theory of radioactivity because she got her uranium out of someone's land without permission by accident and they told her to do it.

The scale of the thing is staggering and I feel like people are minimizing it by making it all about the offense of the singular crystal.

We know for certain that Ranald would not hesitate to sever our ties to the empire given the chance, he wants us to serve him above everyone else.

Choosing Faith is just giving him the chance to choose how we study Gods, and there is a definite benefit to him deciding that no, we don't get to study Gods other than through him.

And by choosing that we are already putting him above us, so far we are friends, choosing to ask for his guidance and opinion tilts that relationship.

A better analogy would be "this would be the biologists who took Henrietta Lacks' cells for study telling her what they had done and destroying them if she requested it."

It's not uranium from someone's land. It is something deeply personal and private of his. Getting consent for performing SCIENCE!!! on someone's essence, divine or biological, is just... basic ethics, of the sort that was violated wholesale with Henrietta Lacks and has allowed companies to reap commercial rewards and share nothing with her family.

It would suck if Henrietta Lacks had told the biologists to destroy the samples, because we have learned so much from the HeLa cell line. Destroying them if asked would still be the right thing to do.
