Honestly, I think this turn we can actually focus a bit less on the Waystone project than we can afford to later:
"[ ] Furnish the research spaces of the Waystone Project HQ (2000gc for Laurelorn-grade)"

By taking this action for 2k monies*, we demonstrate our investment to the locals (and foreign powers when we reach out to them) that we are putting a lot of effort into this, so that buys us time. Because I really want to:

1. Recruit for WEB-MAT, hopefully some enchanters
2. Try to make a Servirscope (I wonder if we can take this action and ask for assistance from Egrimm, and maybe Johann)
3. Investigate how the Vitae reacts with Divine Magic.

(*I am starting a mass movement to convince people to use the term 'monies' for various sums of currency if the context makes it sufficiently unambiguous)
---
As it stands, I'd much prefer to not try and recruit for the project this turn (maybe one college) because as we start drawing in people, our obligation to work on the Waystone project will become more immediate and will push out our side projects.

Also, I think we'd be better off sending Max on his research trip after we have recruited the colleges we want - either they will be more open to giving him relevant info or they will have already agreed to send it with whomever they send, and he be able to focus more on the colleges that we aren't reaching out to.

And we should really do cultural actions this turn (and maybe the next) before reaching out to the major houses or wards.

@BoneyM : I know the following is kinda mixing a main turn type action with a social one, but it just feels sweet, so I'm wondering if it's valid:
[ ] Explore the wonders of the ancient and beautiful city of Tor Lithanel - (Ask Pan if she wants to come with for a bit)

Or would something like asking Pan to come for a visit be more reasonable after we get our Gyrocarrige?

Edit: Regarding the EIC as things stand, I that we should either hand it over now, or take the blackpower action and hand it over next turn. We'll have a library to run soon.

There's likely to be a social action for something alone those lines.

My personal preference is to form connections with the residents and get a lay of the land/understand the politics before we ask about the Grey Lords, just in case they decide to be evasive and waste our action as a result of being dodgy about answers.

I'll agree. Ingratiation into the local political scene will be neither easy nor fast. Connections must start developing sooner than later, lest the entire project be uncharitably thought of as a drain by outsiders, for outsiders. The Ward of Frost seems at first glance, our best shot; Borders Nordland (allowing us to wield influence smothering the conflict), has a not strictly elven leadership, clearly is willing to interact with outsiders and in fact assigned to doing so: Vicereine Cadaeth, the nymph(?) met twice now and our contact so far, is a resident there.
Drawbacks to the pick would be us perhaps considered easily led (going directly to first friendly face) and more of the same political narrative thrown our way - no exposure to differing opinions.

In regards to @picklepikkl 's queries about the grey lords.. the queen probably did not include them for a reason, while Vicereine Cadaeth so very casually referenced them past. It bears noting the elves are not unified in thought and deed; Best not explore that potential mire by faceplanting into it sans local allies or information.

We may want to shell out an AP for diplomacy training. I have a feeling it'll come in handy getting various disagreeing, secretive factions of elves, dwarves, and humans to work together on a long term project.
I asked a while back if we were able to get diplo tutors in elf diplomacy, and the answer was no. I suspect the Lovely Lithanel actions will be useful in this regard, though, since immersing ourselves in their culture will help us gain the Eonir Diplomacy skill and also learn their dialect of Eltharin.
I would like to point out that it's not just our living space. But everyone that's going to travel to us and sleep there, including Waystone members and, hopefully, diplomats.
I'm aware. I still think "nice" (which I know sounds weaksauce, but it is the upgrade from "comfortable") is a good stopping point. 200gc is a lot of money.

Half joking, half reminding you that I copied and pasted (except the bits about soul stones) that section of the book to you.

it's not a big book.

If someone goes out of their way to bring something to my attention and it happens to be something I've already seen, I'd rather respond with 'hmm, interesting' than 'too slow lol'.

Mathilde has Xeno-Affinity and Polyglot, two key skills that are essential for assimilating into a new culture and learning to navigate it. If we want to improve our diplomatic grasp of Laurelorn, I suggest people play to our strengths and spend time integrating. That is where Mathilde excels, and what separates her from most Empire Mages.

Choosing a patron is premature at the moment.

For facilities I'm certainly on for 500 and 2000; we need to make a very good impression. Frankly if Borek comes back he'll be extremely lucky if we don't declare a Grudge against him since he did basically leave the Expedition stranded whilst he went off to mingle with Beastmen demigods or whatever.

At the moment I think priorities are:

- bringing some Dawi in
- bringing some more wizards in
- finding out about the Grey Lords so we can bring them in

Overall having as large of a basis as possible before we "Lay the foundations" - that means at a bare minimum at least a Dawi Runelord, an Eonir mage and wizards from as many Colleges as we can possibly get.

Better access than if she just rocked up on her lonesome, but anything that the Golds consider a secret of their Order or too dangerous to share would require the Gold Order to come on board proper before it would be on the table.

So out of all the organisations in the Old World only the Grey Order is on board proper at this time?

(I'll assume the Grey Order is on board proper because if having your famed LM leading the project doesn't automatically bring you on board then what will?)

@BoneyM, two small things:

I notice that the Ward of Rain is a potential Ward to explore, but it doesn't appear on our "cheat sheet." Is this intentional? There are a few references in the chapter, but I don't have a strong sense of what its deal is.
On our character sheet, we haven't had the 4 CF deducted for our book purchases.

Yeah, I'm coming around to spending our personal AP like this instead:

2 setup actions
Recruit dwarves
Both cultural immersion actions
Research action

Since I'm hoping we'll be working with a bunch of people including from Kesliv and Brettonia, I'm inclined to go for the 300gc option, but more importantly, I want to leave this until next turn.

The only direct Waystone action's I'm interested in are to build the facilities and maybe try and recruit one of the colleges. Everything else is WEB-MAT, cultural or side project*, and as such we can leave accommodation until later.

(I'm hoping that if the Servirscope is viable, it will be useful to attract Runesmiths, and help them contribute to the project)

The Schadensumpf is about 95% of the Ward of Rain.

Fixed.

Boney I am sure you have heard this before but your writing elevates the setting. Before I read this laurelorn was just a hazy saner version of Athel Loren in my mind. You made it somewhere I'd actually love to visit assuming I had like a teleporter to get out at any time.

'''The Ward of Storm: The lands of western Laurelorn, touching Middenland on one end and the ocean on the other. Until the extinction of House Elwyn, it was the only Ward ruled by Forestborn instead of a Major House. The current Warden is Kaia, known as the 'Stormwitch', who advocates peaceful relations with the Empire... and also with the Druchii and the Norscans. Huh.''

I think I already know who I would like to meet with first here if possible, my unhealthy curiosity regarding how this character's brain works has been strongly roused.
I too would love peace with the Norscii and Naggaroth! It would make defending northern waters much easier! Shame that I do not think the desire is mutual on the other end. X-D

We might have to do some work to avoid bringing anyone else into the project playing the same game.
IDK if we are playing that game really, it's just the secret cards we have to play either are irrelevant here or are ones we'd never want to publically talk about, such as us meeting the orc gods and reading the Liber Mortis.
More seriously though you are extremely right, we have to plan this very carefully.

I agree that we should have the 2000. I don't agree that the 500 is correct. There is a difference between showing that we are genuinely committed to the project and want it to succeed and being financially irresponsible. I don't see a value for the extra 200 and personally think it is financially irresponsible.

I'm a big believer in 'workspace comforts' as a way to get, keep, and keep happy, members of a team.

I can tell you, my current job has a way better energy, work ethic and atmosphere than my last 6 combined: and I'm putting 99% of that on my boss investing in a fancy coffee maker, breakfast delivery for the stuff every morning, and turning the unused room into a Tv break room.

the dude is great and we work for him.

How is is financially irresponsible though? What do you want to do with that money than the social cachet it would buy us, both among the elves and the wizards of the project? Saving money does not have an intrinsic moral value

Turn 34 - 2487 – Laurelorn
And thus, a new beginning.

Vicarius Galenstra of House Fanpatar, Prince of the Rain
Nice bloke. We should buy him a Leon Todmeister's Fantabulously Far-reaching Harquebus of Unforseeable and Unperceived Bereavement.
Or more commonly, a Hochland Long Rifle.

"What is a wayshard?" you ask, trying not to sound too interested.

"Like a lodestone for Waystones, and just as useful for navigating,"
We will be wanting one of those.

…a non-polar source of magic is certainly something we should investigate. But only with heavy backup.

Also worth a look. Perhaps something for friend Egrimm to investigate, building on his work on the Wind Fall.

Queen's Champion, Kadoh
A jock. Pleasant, but probably not useful for the project. Him and Johann should be amusing.

Certainly deserving of the name.

Without noticing you've crossed into the area surrounding Tor Lithanel, the home of the Faniour 'Forestborn' citizens - those descended from refugees that sought shelter in Laurelorn during the War of the Beard, and as such forbidden by ancient decree from living within the walls of the city of Tor Lithanel.
Well there is a political landmine I want no part of.

Seems friendly enough?

Lots of opportunities. Unfortunately we are likely to make as many enemies as friends by picking 'sides', whether we want to or not.

in all honestly, its the 2000 that's questionable: if only for the background worry that we might blow our funding load early and get a bit stuck if necessary ingredients or towers or something ends up being very pricesy.

like, I actually want to ask that question: how much money a turn is to much money for use to have a reasonable amount in the back for an expensive, but vital snap buy?
