What's the extra P in MAPP vs MAP? Also why do we want to learn MAPP? That seems like a simpler, less complicated version of something we can already do effortlessly. I mean, given that it is bundled in and costs no extra AP, I'm not opposed to it, just curious.
The simpler spell is:
-More versatile for enchanting and windherding projects.
-Allows us to develop a spell mastery for it in appropriate circumstances.

Main value is that it uses so little power that theres no difference what Wind is used, which makes it theoretically valuable as an intermediary for when you need information from one Wind passed to another as the input.

...for example, a Shyish component that detects undead and paints the direction and distance onto a neutral MAPP canvas....and then an Ulgu component that reads the canvas and shoots shadow blades in that direction, then wipes the canvas .
Anti vampire auto turret.

Purely theoretical, but you get the idea.

To be honest I do not think we will ever learn MMAPP simply because the rewards are so marginal for the AP spent. I mean let's be honest here when we spend time on an action that is not directly for a task we do so in the expectation of it being interesting to read about. Learning a slight variation on a spell we already know does not sound like something that fits that.

It's included in the "finish out the spellbook" action.

Cloak Activity could at least be useful, I'd like to grab it at some point.

I am dubious on too many people being attracted to cloak activity. That is a self improvement action without any immediate utility and without anything unique to it. If we are going to do much in the way of self improvement I would rather finish the sword action than grab one minor spell/

Cloak Activity is a neat spell. In fact it can even serve as the basis for a number of Fog of War spells if we turn it in that direction, since making an entire battalion look like they're doing something they're not is fully in line with Fog of War and Battle Magic.

That sound lovely but in order for that to matter you have to sell the thread on the notion of spending a minimum of 4 AP to make a mildly impressive spell (One to learn and then three to make a new spell like with RoW). I am once more honestly not seeing it.

I'd like to finish refining and codify our Rite of Way- as I recall, Mathilde wasn't entirely happy about it, but a battle magic for maneuver and especially one that lets you do a cavalry charge over a swamp is something we should make sure doesn't die with us.

IE, I want to make new spells more than learn other people's.

Whilst I agree finishing off the spellbook would be neat, and I do want to do it, I just can't see it beating out all our other current research actions at the moment. Rite of Way, Windherding, AV, Apparitions, various artefacts and papers (what's the consensus on the shrooms? Publish as is, or try to make gold- and deathshrooms work?), sword style etc.

Hopefully the branch collage will make it easier to burn through our backlog.

I'll vote for finishing the spellbook next turn. And every turn after that, if necessary.

Publish shrooms as is. It's a solid academic win for Pan if we can poke her to go get her Magistership, and the benefits to getting it out there outweigh the cost in ego for an 'incomplete' work. Maybe it'll lure someone out to WEBMAT to finish it, or Gretel and Max/Johann might pick it up.

Isn't Cloak Activity illusions? If we learned it we could then attempt to tie it into Rite of Way by creating illusions that further obscure/camoflage or maybe even outright hide the army that's marching on it. Or make it look like something else, etc. Or even spread it verg thin across the ground and subtly make the ground itself look different. Stuff like that.

Mathilde wasn't entirely satisfied with Rite of Way apparently.

The spell is already battle magic, more bells and whistles to make it even more complex battle magic is not a good idea IMO.

Rite of Way is about traversal of bad ground. Hiding a marching army is another BM scale effect. Trying to do both with one spell might be possible, since they're both working on mist basis, but it would produce an extremely difficult spell (and would be hard to develop). It's much easier to just have two seperate spells, and use as appropriate. If there really is a situation where you need both effects, it's probably easier to have two wizards that learned the two spells, than one wizard that learned the mega-spell.

The initial version didn't pan out, as it was too difficult to cast, and the original mechanism didn't work out... but the current version is perfectly serviceable.
We were using it for hour upon hour carrying EXTREMELY HEAVY things without being worn out. In practice, other battle wizards will be using it for shorter stretches, so I think it's fine as it is.

Rereading the Mathemagic parts, we got a lot of rolls over 100 during the creation process...

Re the Cloak Activity incorporation, I don't think it's needed. The spell is already hard enough as is.

Potentially odd question: Does Angrund (Belegar's clan) have a translation into Reikspeil, or is it not actually a word in Khazalid?

EDIT: The closest I can get is taking Ang as Industry, and Und as watchtower built into the mountains to make Angarund, The Construction of Mountain Watchtowers. Could make sense with the a getting dropped

To be fair this was in the chaos wastes with the staff of mistery, both of which ease the casting and the strain on Mathilde.

it's likely that using it for most people and places will be more… constrained, but still a significant aid.

Spell description says 2500 footmen, or 500 horse. Very good for unexpected charges or pursuing a broken enemy. It could maybe be used to get a baggage train around an obstacle, or something similar, but I don't expect it to ever need to be used on that scale again.

The abundance of Ulgu in the Wastes made the massive lifting possible, but Mathilde's robes caught fire several times: anyone else would have been miscasting and tanking Dhar to the soul.

Edit:The part where Mathilde does the casting on the steppes is probably my favourite point in the quest.

The fire was actually just from direct Dhar exposure. The belt was burning it off. Literally.
Doesn't make it any better, tbh.

  • An - Will, shall, am going to, with purpose.
  • Grund - Hammer.
Easy

Yes, but had the Dhar been able to reach Mathilde it would have started to interfere with the casting before it could leave the body, hence causing miscasts leading to possible Dhar in the soul.
You know that does make one think, what did the other wizards, particularly ones with good mage sight see of Kragg's work? I mean the rune burns Dhar into flame so it might have looked a little like turning Dhar into the Red Wind which would be a very odd thing for a Grey Wizard to do even through an item. They would not know it was a rune, but I doubt they could have missed an effect that was literally making visible flame from the blue

@BoneyM I'm curious did Mathilde ever ask other wizards what the belt's effect looks like to them, like maybe Max (he has sight based mage sense I think)?

Of course, that makes perfect sense, I forgot the an- prefix entirely :-/

EDIT: although I quite like the idea of it being a pun now, using the obvious meaning and my stretch - "Those who will hammer the mountains into watchtowers" would be a very appropriate meaning for the royal clan of K8P
