Same with steam once we work out the principles behind the Steam Tank and/or when Anna finishes studying Miragliano's combine harvester.most military innovation that does not kill will likely become available for civilians i can see Ostland start selling bicycles to its own people and export them to the rest of the world
Between those two and Salkalten having switched to an assembly line model of production a few years ago, we are slowly but surely starting to industrialize.
The designs for the Alcohol Engine were gifted to us in secret by a Dwarf who was hoping that his designs could have a positive impact on the world instead of collecting dust in the patent office of the Dwarven Guild of Engineering for the next couple of centuries. You do realize the bicycles got delayed for guns and better shredding machines? Not too killy bicycles expected to be?
We are also exporting our shredding machines to other parts of the world for the sake of keeping those parts of the world intact and paying us. In addition to using said shredding machines to shred enemies ourselves.
This means it is very much in our interest to further develop our shredding machines.
Also, the main downside of the Alcohol Engines, being higher maintenance, is mostly a non-issue with our high-income provided we restrain ourselves when buying priceless antiques for a while.
Meanwhile, bicycles are a cheaper alternative to horses that can be used as impromptu barricades.
Ostland has been too heavily forested to develop a good Cavalry tradition for most of its history and we have just started a horse breeding program intended to fix this(though said breeding program still limited to the Northern March due to the sheer amount of forest in our province). The former means the local demand for horses is low in Ostland, the latter means the demand for alternatives to horses is low in Ostland.
We also have a fair number of defensive options(with the Alcohol Engine affecting the Deathspinner and the Hornfist being in development with the intent to proliferate them and boost the armour of our Human state troopers even further). Which re
Basically? We took a bunch of actions that kind of reduce the impact of bicycles.
Ceterum censeo sylvam delenda est.
Wooden wheels work off-road for Steam Tanks because Steam Tanks are larger vehicles with larger wheels. And larger wheels are better at absorbing shocks(which is why the Penny-farthing used to be a popular bicycle design).I'm actually more interested in their design, and the requirements needeed for decent military application. Imagine if gear change is figured out, tire treads, or we copy some of the principles of the way Steam Tanks move off-road onto the bicycle. Next step, Steam Tank Construction!![]()
