Given the no raids we were given this year and the various shit happening in Norsca it would be a good idea to start on those watchtowers soon, also once our main port is upgraded again we can get even more ships out to help hopefully overcome our lack in sailing skill.

Yeah whatever actions we can take into learning about the disappearances next turn I would say go for. That is not something we want to let build up. No one harms our people! Also this makes me want to do the logging action for stewardship even more to clear just a little bit more of the forest and give Jegow some more sight range.
Then we should do a logging plus survey farms combo.

Agricultural Survey: You've been building a lot of new farms recently, mostly by expanding the land, declaring it farmland, and having farmers take it over. But how good is your farming, really? Ostland was never the most farming-inclined, and you've been relatively lax on making it standardized or anything. The best expertise you have right now are the halflings, for they come from the Moot, possibly the most fertile land in all the Empire for farming, to hear them tell it. If you could organize a few halflings to survey the various farmlands of Ostland, new and old, they might have some tips or be able to identify inefficiencies or bottlenecks here and there. Even the nobility can't complain too much, for even if it goes against 'traditional' farming, or go against their own decisions for the land, they appreciate more food and income as well as anyone else. Cost: 1,000. Time: 2 Years. Reward: Farmland of Ostland Surveyed for possible improvements? Chance of Success: 75%

Logging Assistance: Wood is always in demand, across the Empire. To build houses, carriages, wagons, and more. Barrels for ale, for instance. Sabine has suggested an investment into your major logging communities, such as Roezfels and Vandergart. Government subsidies, effectively, to allow them to create larger and more sophisticated logging facilities, allowing greater profit to flow in the province as a result. It takes money to make money, as Sabine can often be found saying. You could also put some towards the logging yards near Jegow, allowing that settlement to expand slightly in the future, while reducing the nearness of the forest to their settlement. In the future, that should provide aid against greenskins, beastmen, or otherwise, at least allowing the Bull Warriors a chance to see them coming. Cost: 1,000. Time: 2 Years. Reward: Single-time fund gain. Logging Income Increase.
The problem is we won't need the defense cutting trees brings if the 'Agricultural Survey' tells us what is going on to handle the problem (Survey all farmland in Ostland, I'm assuming the active farmland will not only be surveyed, but land in the forest of shadows will be surveyed as it is potential farmland). The cutting trees action only covers some places that already have defences, so it would be useless if those places are never attacked, and slows progress if we keep turtling in stewardship nearly every turn. We know the cutting trees action will not help find what is happening, the forest has had rumors of build up for awhile, and cut forest never helped find the problem. Agricultural survey has been around about the time we first knew things are growing in the forest, actions branch into other actions.

That makes sense.

Eh, as I already pointed out, them getting a monopoly was basically inevitable and technically has already happened thanks to the very laws of the Empire. Right now, the laws state that only the Gold Order are allowed to do anything with magical alchemy, which has basically gutted all other alchemy guilds of their best products and given the Gold Order a legally enforced monopoly on said products. And to add salt to the wound, the Gold Order is better at mundane alchemy as well, meaning that more people were buying from them, more apprentices(especially the rich ones) were going to Gold owned schools to learn and more teachers were taking Gold job offers.

Since the Empire doesn't have any laws preventing a monopoly from existing, and in fact are enforcing the Gold Order having a monopoly on a large segment of the Alchemy trade, the rise of the Gold Order is inevitable no matter what the Gold Wizards or their rivals do or don't do. By this point the writing on the wall would be clear to anyone with the perception to perceive it.
Pretty big difference between pushing out lessers by insurmountable advantages and pushing them out now because you need the rep.

One is a lot bloodier

Christ, Estalia, how can one country be so goddamn useless.

I would like to point out that the Empire was like that as well for a long time a.k.a. the Era of the three Emperors

So you can't really blame them for not having a saintly Hero unit that does dedicates it's whole live to unmake the mistakes of the last 1000 years

Legally speaking, Natasha is a priestess.

Not just legally speaking, at this point it's the lie that became a truth with how hard Kat runs down the religion route

Rep wouldn't do a thing. Forming a monopoly? That's the work of decades, training apprentices, hiring employees, expanding facilities and production to meet demand and buying out your rivals as you slowly drive them out of business. All that takes time. And I'd also quite a lot of work, but as I have said the rise of the Gold Order is actually the exception to that because said rise is more of a by product of the Empire's own laws more then anything else.

The period following Teclis' inception of the increasingly famous alchemical thaumaturgy of the Golden Order saw great turmoil with Middenheim's Alchemists' Guild. With the Magister Alchemists of the Golden Order breaking new ground in Altdorf and many of the alchemical theories of previous centuries being proven incorrect, a major reorganization of the Guild was called for. By Imperial edict and persistent pressure from various cults, all elements deemed magical were purged from the teachings and practices of the Guild. But without access to the closely guarded secrets of the Golden Order, the Alchemists' Guild found that it was being left behind and increasingly ignored. Magisters from the Golden Order began to appear in Middenheim, invited by nobles and merchants. Even the Graf himself installed a Magister Alchemist in his court. Things looked bleak for the Guild, and it found itself demoted to teaching apprentices the rudiments of alchemy.

Eighty years ago, the Guild was finally forced to close its doors. Few alchemists of any skill chose to study or teach at the Guild when they could apply to one of the schools controlled by the Golden Order, and the Guild certainly was not attracting wealthy students or endowments like it used to. It could no longer to pay for the upkeep of its ancient, sprawling buildings. This appeared to be just what the Golden Order of Magic had been waiting for. Representatives from the Golden Order approached the one-time owners of the Guild's land, saying that they were interested in buying the property to renovate and refit it with new laboratories. They even said that they would employ the old alchemist scholars to teach initiates the basics of alchemy.
The rivals of the Gold College, the various already established alchemist guilds, they are forbidden by law from possessing the means to keep up with the Gold Order, they just cant compete because the laws and cults of the Empire prevent them from doing so. Compared to the other Colleges having to work to gain political and public acceptance, the Gold College is easy street. The Gold Order doesn't have to make public displays or anything of the sort because the laws of the Empire and it's various cults are already on their side(whether they realize it or not) when it comes to ensuring their economic domination of the alchemy trade, the College just has to sit back and take advantage of the inevitable results of the current policy as they happen. At this point, there isn't a single capitalist in the Empire that doesn't envy the Gold College.

As in, the rumor mill says the Gold Order isn't even leaving the losing rivals to crumple over time. Its getting with some kicking

Does the emergence of chemistry mean tomatoes are provably non-poisonous? Or is the toxicity of lead already known?

We will have to take a closer look at the forest without a doubt. Last thing we need is another home threat in addition to the ooncoming threats.

Lights at the norsca thing is probably another punch up as they're finding another champion or dispute. The lack of raids shows this or they building strength for something.

Bonelands: electric boogaloo is all good, I love watching that fight last time and it should be more fun. Though this seems more like surgical compared to last time.

Fingers crossed for slan to pull more warp rocks again.

How dubious Canon are the Warhammer end days novels? I only just came to the Warhammer Fantasy fandom and I am not liking what I am hearing about them. And what else should I know about them and the Fandom in general?

The End Days of Warhammer Fantasy are very much like the Dark Ages of Battletech, to give you a familiar frame of reference.

They're only canon if you let them be.
More seriously, the writing behind it is a mix of hamfisted railroading and lore inconsistency. Feel free to disregard anything from it.
One, their leader, even called himself Mountaineater! The ogres of the east would literally consume our homes, eh? Not while the dawi stand!
Ogre Kingdoms 8e said:
The hulking Tyrant Bauldig Mountaineater is the kind of Ogre of which legends are made. Bauldig has sought out and conquered many of the most menacing peaks found in the Mountains of Mourn, including the much-dreaded Mount Thug. He has defeated them all and even, it is said, toppled Bigstride Peak when he burrowed under it and ate the heart of the mountain. Naturally drawn to such a tough and charismatic leader, the growing Mountaineater Tribe imitates Bauldig by eating rocks with every meal so they can become as tough and stubborn as their Tyrant. Often underground, the Mountaineaters have developed a taste for the races they habitually find there, actually preferring Dwarf, Skaven, or Night Goblin meat to all others.
LOL get fucked Ogri

@DocMatoi A bit of a double posting there.

But that's a bit concerning, if the east ogres decides to intrude more on the Dawi side.

Edit: NVM, forgot to reload.

I feel pretty confident the northern lights being particularly blue and seemingly cold/icy to be directly related to 3 major temples in Kislev being finished in the same time period. That's a major change in piety effects/worship very far north in a place filled with magic users all apparently worshiping those gods.

Horrible Beasts Beached:

Either failed clan Moulder experiments or failed Dark elf experiments (possibly trying to make more black arks?). They also might be a result of the Northern Lights event that's been happening, or worse, an undiscovered event that is happening in Albion or someplace else.

So you can't really blame them for not having a saintly Hero unit that does dedicates it's whole live to unmake the mistakes of the last 1000 years

Didn't they get two saintly heros to rally around? A brother and sister duo. One of them died and the other one left after that unity disintegrated because of infighting, IIRC. Or am I misremembering something from another quest?

As ever, your ability to capture both the grim reality of life in the Old World and the bizarre humour that flares up here and there is excellent torroar. I do wonder though, would fish caught in that river be especially tasty, considering that they're already beer battered?

the part about embedded ship hulls makes me think it has to do with the Vampire Coast, but there wasnt any mention of undeath magic involved...

Maybe. Would've also included that if they were only rotten or skeletal but they seem to be horribly mutated in a way only dhar and chaos magic usually achieve. Maybe with some effort the same thing can be done with necromancy, but it's much easier for necromancers and vampires to frankenstein up an amalgamation of corpses rather than mutate a beast and have it grow extra limbs.

so that scouting out the forest.
setting up for whatever coming south from the north.
maybe helping out with the wasteland thing.
and just generally getting stronger on the econ level i think

Reading this Rumour mill, and looking back at everything that has happened to Estalia and Tilea I cant help but feel absolutely disgusted by their civilisations.

How can you pack so much fail into such a small area?

You can't even blame the Skaven for it anymore, most of it is them, they have become the skaven themselves!

Hell, a part of me wants that Elven Dragon Prince to conquer Tilea, even if he's a dragon prince, and thus probably an arrogant arse, at least then there's a chance the southern human realms of the Old World might not be doomed to utter failure and incompetence forever.

They're going through their equivalent to the Age of Three Empires now, let's just be glad any kind of authority exists in Estalia as it is. Furthermore, part of me thinks that this is going to be the potential origin of Warhammer Fantasy Portugal, which would be neat to see.

Furthermore, I think Asarnil's choices might backfire and kick off even more civil war to the south or begin causing frictions with both Old World trading and the Dwarfs in the Grey Mountains. Considering that Tilea is the primary place where Dwarfs and Elves effectively trade via the middle man that is the Tilean City-states, having that faulted could have a negative knock-on effect in terms of international trade and shipping. Not to mention that an Elves Kingdom at the foot of the Grey Mountains would definitely not be preferred by the Dwarfs who live there, meaning that that maybe a future avenue for even more conflict, perhaps even between Dwarfs and Elves again.

I know they don't like each other, but I recall Finubar sending a dozen boatloads of treasure or so to settle the Grudge or possibly just get the Phoenix Crown back, so I think they're a little less as odds with one another than they are in canon?

Huh. That's new, wonder what caused that to change.
Otl the Gold College kept that knowledge a secret allowed only to their highest ranked members, and when said knowledge got leaked they worked to actively cover it up. I wonder what caused them to go the opposite route and actively promote the knowledge both amongst themselves and in the Empire as a whole. Because that's something that's going to have far reaching effects for the Empire in the future after the Gold Order successfully takes control of the Empire's alchemy industry and educational training.
.

Incorrect. They published their findings on the True Elements, but kept their work on the aethyric compounds, things involving gromril and ithilmar, suppressed. The reason they faced ridicule when it was discovered in the future was because of them 'mixing' magic and proper sciences together, and thus got ridiculed by the pure naturalist alchemists and such. That research literally hasn't even begun yet. They're literally just doing the stuff they did in canon, though it should be noted that the stuff you quoted took place over the place of centuries. This is the first few decades. That's all. They just got a few of the True Elements, they don't even have a sixth of the full 'True Elements Table' going.

Anyone else getting a serious OMAR COMIN' vibe from the Forests and Sea of Claws?

Need moar towers. Need moar ships. Need moar everything.

Hey, with the South tearing itself apart and looting the ships coming to trade, that means traders will be looking to go elsewhere. They've traditionally been the middlemen of trade between Dwarves and Elves. Perhaps that role will fall to another region or port? One with links to both Dwarves and Elves? Like, say... Salkalten?

I wonder if we'll see Sabine float this as something to aim for next year?
