Elector's Meet of 2309, Part 9
"I accept."
Magnus's scarred face breaks into a broad smile. Almost everyone at the table cheers, though Kessel and the Al-Ulric most of all. Ortrud does not yell, though she does thump her metal encased fist upon the table repeatedly. Moro gives you a grin, while Rommel gives you a deeply respectful nod. There are a few dissenters, obviously, but against the sheer weight of Magnus's presence and perspective on the issue they relegate themselves to politely clapping. But you do not miss the way that Magnus's eye flickers towards them faster than an arrow on the battlefield. Victor looks as if to have swallowed a
barrel of lemons, but he is doing an admirable job of not showing it.
"Excellent! Excellent indeed! Now, I realize that this comes on the cusp of the years end, and I will not force the issue such that we are required to pool emergency funds and effort to it. Instead, let us make it a
grand occasion, one that the people may look up to. The Empire needs heroes more than ever, and for one such as you, Frederick, we must not put anything less than our best together," Magnus says, his booming voice tinged with honest happiness and pride.
Yet before he continues, you speak up.
"Forgive my impertinence, my Emperor, but I did not win alone. There were many heroes who assisted me, heroes by act and virtue. I speak of course, of all those who fought against Gruber in their own way, but some in particular; Johanna Fuerbach of Talabecland, the Cookery Regiment of the Mootland, Archmage Aurelion of Saphery, Stephan von Kessel, Ortrud Hertwig, and the Ice Mages Veronika, Valentina, and Vera. Especially so Vera, for it is she who was slain at Ockholm in combat against a Nurglite Sorcerer."
"And humble as well," Magnus murmurs.
Next to you, Kessel and Ortrud start trying to protest, but you shush them with a wave of your hand.
"No, my friends, your perseverance and courage kept the people of Nordland safe before I could marshall all my forces Stephan. And Ortrud, were it not for your assistance I doubt that we could have slain Gruber at all."
Speculative eyes turn towards them.
"The details of the Triumph itself can be decided later, all that must be known now is that it shall occur. I think that a year's time should be enough to prepare a
proper Triumph, do you not agree?" Magnus says merrily.
A year to prepare? That's…that's good. Now done with that, it actually becomes time to take care of more specific business. First you begin on taxes, which thankfully do not require much changing. Indeed, the growing prosperity of the Empire due to Magnus's policies and actions is actually funding itself! You speak on greenskin movements, beastmen that still plague all the provinces but Nordland, and various other threats. Questions are raised on the return of the northern ports, with you and Kessel able to report good progress. Of course, other issues are raised, about tolls and river trade tariffs and who owns what side of which bridge. When the subject of that comes up you can
feel Victor straining not to bring up that damn bridge again which is the main connector between Ostland and Hochland.
Struhelspan was built almost five centuries ago, and
still the Hochlanders are trying to get control of it. They proclaim that the Lenkster Bridge of which nearby is the actual Lenkster Castle, a full on defensive Citadel, gains its own tolls, while the more southern bridge should be theirs. You, of course, disagree. Because
Ostland was the one who built the bridges, from the bottom up. Originally it had been planned to be a co-construction and both provinces would share the profits of the bridge and also pony up the funds to keep it maintained…but then the Hochlanders had pulled out at the cost of construction. But they claimed the paperwork showed they should still own half of the bridge despite contributing nothing.
And so on…and so on…and so on…
But you persevere, through the grace of your mind and good drink to keep you going. As such, several things come up either through other mouths or by your own, and they must be decided.
Pick As Many As You Like, Unless One Must Be Chosen Over Another
[] A Binding of Three: Ortrud wishes to set up a battery of trade treaties and defense pacts between Ostermark, Ostland, and Nordland. This would benefit all three of your provinces she says, while only allowing you to defend one another better should something happen. A small mutual exchange of patrolling troops would be all that is required to truly put permanence to the deal. [Cost of Northern Mutual Defense = 100 Crowns Per Turn in exchange for Funding 500 Light Cavalry to patrol the roads of all three territories. Ostermark and Nordland shall do the same for you, meaning that any attacks on any of the three will allow you advance warning to send assistance and them towards you. Trading Income +200 Per Turn] Chance of Success: 100%
[] Hochland Trading: Despite Victor's displeasure with you, money is a fantastic equalizer. If you were to come to some sort of less antagonistic trading relationship with him it may pay dividends down the line. On the other hand, this would require using their land routes over Talabecland. You cannot do both. [Reward: +150 Gold Per Turn From Trading…if action is successful.]
Cannot Choose If Talabecland Trading Is Chosen. Chance of Success: 75%
[] Talabecland Trading: Adolf Fuerbach is an all right source. Outwardly he must disapprove of his daughter stealing half his army and much of his citizens to fight in Nordland, but he likely approves of her assistance leading to her now being associated with a man who had just been chosen for being awarded an Imperial Triumph. Using Talabecland would be less profitable, but easier to do, than Hochland's routes. [Reward: +75 Gold Per Turn From Trading]
Cannot Choose If Hochland Trading Is Chosen. Chance of Success: 100%
[] Seeing Jade: You saw how useful that Jade Wizard was on your way into Wissenland. Though no doubt the Colleges of Magic are doing their best, they are still quite young. By leveraging your Imperial Triumph, victory against Gruber, and actions already performed in Ostland, you can easily mitigate any damage to your public opinion. On the other hand, others across the Empire might be far more suspicious, after all, no matter if it's Magnus, opinions as deeply held as are about magic will take much longer to change. But then again, what do you care? Ask Magnus if you may request a detachment of Jade Wizards to your lands. They can construct an Enclave in Wulfenburg, and from there spread their powers of healing both flesh and land to Ostland! [Reward: 1d4 Jade Wizards to Ostland. Farming Income +300. Healing For The People] (Warning, May Damage Non-Ostland/Nordland and Magnus/Ortrud Public Opinion) Chance of Success: 85%
[] Specialists of Mootland: Your own recently crafted deal with Moro is a good one, in your opinion. You should see if she, Kessel, and Ortrud might be willing to make similar deals. By far, Nordland is safer. Thanks to Gruber, there are no greenskins or beastmen there, and with the Rieksguard so heavily in force there none shall be able to push north from Drakwald or east from the Forest of Shadows. But Ostermark is an agricultural-focused province, and they should have much to share. It's just an idea, mind you. Besides, and though you will never say this, a province of short folk makes you laugh. Ortrud is the shortest Elector Count out of all the humans present, a large dwarven city is nearby, and then halflings? Heh. Still, is it an idea worth discussing? [Mootland gains relations with Nordland and Ostermark. Better farming for both, better relations of all three with Ostland] (Warning,
Will worsen relations of Stirland with both Ostermark and Nordland ) Chance of Success: 75%
[] Marine Specialty: Most of your more experienced mariners are…well, dead. But those of Nordland are not. However, with Salkalten being repaired, it might be prudent to see if there could be any Nordlanders willing to lend their expertise on retainer to your soon to be completed port. This would let your ships and mariners be trained much better than they otherwise would, and would also foster better relations between you and Nordland. [+5 to Ostland Naval-related Options.] Chance of Success: 75%
[] Business With Marienburg: Even after Salkalten is rebuilt, you will have to take plenty of time reconstructing Ostland's fleet. Or will you? Approach the most powerful merchants in the Empire to see if you could not purchase some ships of your own, and have them berth at Nordland in the time. Kessel seems receptive to this, as it would mean more ships defending his lands in the meantime, and it would be nice to just
have a few ships when Ostland is fully repaired. Now, you
know they'll do business with you, the only problem is seeing just what you can
get. [100% Chance of Success…
however…25% 10 Ships/50% 5 Ships/75% 3 Ships/ 100% 2 Ships. Additional Reward: Improved Marienburg Relations] Cost To Be Adjusted Depending on Success Roll.
[] More Guns Please: Wissenland is the main producer of guns and cannon across the Empire. It would behoove you to try and better relations with them, even if only so that you can negotiate a continual yearly purchase of the things. Such a thing would allow you pay far less to recruit hand gunner units of your own, and would just be nicer overall. Make an order or two of cannons so that you can add them to your defenses around Ostland. Wouldn't it be nice if your castles and Salkalten and Wulfenburg had a few of those lying around? [Reward: +100 Trading Income Per Turn. Cheaper to purchase hand guns and cannon. ] Chance of Success: 65%
[] The Ostland School of Gunnery and Engineering: You named it as such, and have to reap the consequences. The Nuln facilities are named the Imperial versions of themselves. Your new place will gain
extreme scrutiny with short notice. Especially as you are not restricting women from attending on Valma's orders. Those two factors alone will make it quite a polarizing place to attend. You know it would be a
great boon if you were to get Magnus to give the place his personal blessing. And who knows, if he approves of it, maybe you'll get more students than you otherwise would because women will be attending there instead of at Nuln! Perhaps even people who wanted female engineers but were rejected…hmmm. Yes. A risky but good idea, if the reward is gained. [Reward: Magnus's Personal Blessing For Ostland School of Gunnery and Engineering. Boost To Some Female's Opinions. More prospective students and engineers for Ostland.] (Warning, may reduce relations with Wissenland, Hochland, and more Traditional Members of society). Chance of Success: 75%
