Look, I don't think playing up his feelings and emotions is the right way to go. Honor, he cares about honor and oaths. Dwarves are not...this. Bah whatever. We'll see what happens.

You are? I feel like I'm reading a drama with a tear filled declaration that Garagrim has nothing to be ashamed about and that his father sacrificed himself. Short, to the point and with a heavy emphasis on honor, that seems dwarven to me.

Sorry 'bout the double post. I just realized what I could have done to put it in an edit. My apologies, I endeavor to improve.

Still, it's rather sobering to consider that over thirty thousand dawi died during this entire expedition. Even if (as you noted before) no one sent everything they had, and everyone's contributions besides Karak Kadrin and Karak-a-Karaz consisted of non-vital formations. Still, between Starbeard's tome and the lose of a Lord of Decay, the dawi will hopefully be able to gain ground in the overall strategic situation.

And I'm still trying to figure out where Karak Izor wandered off to. I have to assume it has to do with the Estalian situation, but, well, it'd be off for them to not at least send a messenger.

Actually, speaking of Starbeard, I notice the big stompy golems aren't on the allied forces page. I assume that just has to do with these being overall reinforcement reductions, as I can't see anything about the Anvil's of Doom either?

It would be much worse if the losses weren't spread out across all the Throngs. These much losses would pretty much ensure a single hold is wiped out, but the same cannot be said here, you know what I mean?

Plus. You know. Slayers. They were kind of always planning on dying. And yes, the golems are not on the list, nor is the recovered Anvil of Doom.

Also, I feel like you might have overcounted the deaths? I could be wrong, maybe the math I'm doing is off. Because thirty thousand doesn't sound right. Are you checking with the first tally, then the reinforcements page of the last portion of the Anna-led segment, against this final count? Plus, remember a good chunk aren't dead at all who aren't on the list. This is the combat-capable, yeah? Wide range beyond that due to inherent dwarf durability.

Either way, if this was 200 years later, the amount of dead would more likely than not be way more than is acceptable in terms of deaths. But that's around two whole generations of dawi lesser (what with there being less and less dawi normally). So the Karaz Ankor can take the hits much better - even if they are kind of hard hits.

"It's got to be more," Garagrim accepts the question regardless, "More than just some orcs or goblins. A full WAAAAGH! could do. A bonegrinder, maybe. I don't know. I've fought both sorts, and I haven't died yet. I will, though," he raises a fist and examines the bloodied knuckles upon it, "I have to. Karak Kadrin deserves a ruling family whose leader that isn't destined to die like us."

"I don't think I understand," you drink some more of your ostka.

"It's…," he grunts, obviously frustrated, "I have read the histories of our people. We have had Ironfists ruling Karak Kadrin – all sworn to the Slayer Oath – but many of them were or at least could have been more. Grimnir has been served many times over, but…," he sighs. "King Garagrim – a few generations ago – was a brilliant architect, did you know that? His documents and personal designs were found long after his death but when they were added to the Karak they improved its defensibility and beauty even further than ever before."

You aren't quite sure how to respond to that.

"Prince Drumin had an amazing aptitude for the Runes but by the Oath of our family he could not pursue them," Garagrim continues. "There are many more stories like that. None of us have been a failure as a warrior and the very fact that we are at my father and I is evidence that none of us have failed at being Slayers."

"But you want more than that," you finish, passing him another flask of Bugman's.

He seems to need it more than you right now.

"It has to be grand enough, glorious enough of a Doom to release the entire Ironfist line from the Oath."

"You've thought about this a lot."

"I want my father to be more than he is," he shrugs. "I have seen him when he does not commit to battle. He sings the old songs and with the Axe of Dargo he is a whirlwind of death upon the field – but what son wishes to know his father was slain in battle?"

"Or rather, that he is dead at all," you venture.

"That too," he nods, "But his soul is all consumed by battle. How do we know that it is all he could be? What lies within the hearts of my family that have been subsumed beneath the Slayer Oath?"

"Could not," you speak slowly, "Your great ancestor or what have you, taken the oath and leave his heir to ascend to his former position?"

"I have asked myself that question before," Garagrim stares into the middle distance, "Baragor - the first Ungrim Ironfist - died in the depths of Karak Kadrin but not in battle – was it because he was undefeatable or something else? But so torn was he that he held to both of his oaths – as slayer and king. And now, so too does my father."

"I see."

"Every King of Karak Kadrin since is to take the Oath – his children are not necessarily meant to do so but it has become a tradition at this point. One I aim to end," he finishes firmly.

[X] Write in: You told me once that you wished for a great doom, to free your family from the Oath. Your ancestor, Garagrim, could have been a great architect without the oath. Prince Drumin had talent for the runes he could never pursue. You wanted that for your family, and you wanted it to be you who did it, for who wishes to see their father die in battle?
-[X] Do you honestly think your father would not feel the same as you do, right now, if your roles were reversed? Would you want him to swear the oaths again, binding not just himself, but any future family he might have? Saying your sacrifice was not enough to fulfill the oath? If his death killing Skulltaker, recognized by all dwarves of note as of sufficient worth, is not enough for you...it will never be. Your line will be locked to the oath for eternity.

Question, did Freddy know it was skulltaker? We all know this guy, but did any of the character recognize him on sight?

On the Gargarim issue. I think it better to focus on something other than a parents duty. Instead i think we should angle mainly for what i think a hint. In the conversation it is mentioned that Ungrim means oath unfulfilled and
Garagrim meaning fulfilled oath, so i propose that we say that instead of thinking of it as on a personal level bring it to a dynasty level. As Ungrim died the oath became fulfilled and thus the line of Kings itself has finally been redeemed. King Baragor managed to balance the duties of slayer and King, but in not giving up his duty as their King he accepted a obligation however unspoken, that Karak Kadrin would one day have a King fully devoted to them again. This is why Gargarim, his father and many ancestors a have struggled to fulfill the slayer oath (i believe that Gargarim himself speaks of this in a moment between the battles here), so that Karak Kadrin may have the King it deserves. Remind him of the conversation he and Fredrick shared (The Reclamation of Karak Ungor: Part 57 (took me 20 minutes to find)) and that this was a chance that Ungrim most likely had hoped for, that just like Gargarim had hoped to allow Ungrim to be something more than a slayer, surely Ungrim wanted to see his son without the trapings of a slayer.

Not sure on how to formulate this into a speech, but i believe it is the way to go.

Edit: Turns out some people beat me to the punch

Convince Garagrim To Not Re-Swear The Slayer Oath of Baragor's Line:
[] Write-In
I think the angle we should go for is that he will dishonour his father for undoing what is possibly the greatest doom in dwarf history. To undo all of that in a single passionate moment of grief would dishonour him no matter what doom he would find.

Man, it's going to take a long while to regenerate the losses to our Ogre Steelbacks: A force of three hundred reduced to twenty. That's not a great feeling. Still, they've been prolific enough throughout Ostland that I think we'll be able to manage it given time.

It would be much worse if the losses weren't spread out across all the Throngs. These much losses would pretty much ensure a single hold is wiped out, but the same cannot be said here, you know what I mean?

I counted out 34,157 surviving dwarfs from the current lists, then went back to grab the numbers from the reinforcement wave (44,987), then the starting force (27,150 Everpeak dawi and 4,400 slayers). I assumed about four to six thousand dawi were laid up after the big desperate final fight as well (the raw number of dead prior to that, counting slayers, was actually about 42,000 from where my numbers are looking).

Of course, I was just crunching the ones by graphing calculator, so I might've fudged the totals at some points.

Of course, long term trade offs with enemies damaged and high morale on return might see the dawi having a baby boom from this if we're lucky, so it'll probably all balance out in the long term.

I left that behind, figuring that, as the youngest child of six, there was no chance of me ever becoming Count anyways.
Point of order, we know that Frederick had a lot more brothers and sisters then that. :V
1-9th Hohenzollern Sons/1-4 Hohenzollern Daughters of Count Joseph Hohenzollern - Slain in 2304 by Chaos Cultists/Chaos Knights/Tripping Dead
Nine brothers and 4 sisters. Jesus Christ. :( (I've quietly boggled at the twists of fate happening that way; that, sometimes, an entire family and tradition can just poof! and die out like that...)

We don't know if he was the 6th son though. But I believe he was the last on the inheritance list anyway, regardless of age.
I wonder what kind of scarring do we have now.
Diplomacy: 4+2+1+2+2=11 (You are not the most tactful. Instead of a silver tongue, you have one of barbed iron. You sometimes find it hard to be personable at all to any who are not your friends or loved ones.)
Trait: Genius –Smart doesn´t even begin to describe you. (+2 All Stats)
Trait: Experienced - A Daemon Prince of Nurgle and a Bloodthirster of Khorne given True Death. Slaying the Overlord of an entire Vampire Bloodline. Out drinking Josef Bugman, meeting the legendary Ice Hags of Kislev, garnering a new Imperial School of Gunnery and Engineering and the Stewardship of the Third Imperial Navy for Ostland. You have seen, drunk, punched, killed, and generally experienced much. (+1 To All Stats)
Trait: Dawongr of Karaz Ankor - Recognized across every major Dwarf Hold for deeds within Karak Ungor, and granted a great amount of respect by those who would respect such positive opinions of the dwarfs. A name so-well known engenders respect or at least the appearance of it for many. (+2 Diplomacy, +5 Diplomacy With Dwarfs, -1 Diplomacy With Elves)
Frederick seems to have an extra +2 Diplomacy from somewhere?

He does have a conditional +3 diplo with Sigmarites, and a hefty +7 with Dwarfs though. (Magnus, on the other hand, has a conditional +9. Wow. He also really hates Greenskins, heh.)
Diplomacy: 8+2+2+2-1-2-2=8

Trait: Educated Diplomat - Years of working under her mother has inured her to the nuances of diplomacy. (+2 Diplomacy)
Trait: Tutored By Master Dwarven Engineer - Though her tutor was a Dwarven Slayer, old Valma was a Master Engineer with centuries of experience. Personally being taught and coupled with Anna's own startling intelligence allowed her to absorb an extensive amount of knowledge. On the other hand, the rather caustic nature of her dwarf teacher rubbed off on her personality. (+2 Learning, -2 Diplomacy)
Trait: Foul Mouthed - She was apprenticed to a bitter Slayer Engineer who drinks heaviky, even for a dwarf. What did you expect? (-1 Diplomacy)
Trait: Permafrost Personality – As a result of a bad glacial surge while casting ice magic, this person was irrevocably changed to their core. Their emotions are usually muted and their demeanor is cold enough that weak willed people will flinch at their seemingly permanent cold gaze. On the other hand, their mind has been left with a disturbing amount of focus now that 'distractions' are less likely to affect them. (-2 Diplomacy, +2 Learning, +1 Martial)

A name so-well known engenders respect or at least the appearance of it for many. (+2 Diplomacy, +5 Diplomacy With Dwarfs, -1 Diplomacy With Elves)
Anna's diplomacy on the other hand, seems to be missing the +2 base from Dawongr.

"How was I supposed to predict Khorne himself would come to fight me?"

Close but no cigar.

Something I'm really scared about: he's survived this, but either he's so corrupted by Khaine that he unconsciously chewed a Khainite Mark into the inside of his mouth, or someone very close to him carved it there without anyone noticed. These are both very bad possibilities and they ought to be figured out pronto.

Alternatively it was added during the coma. EDIT: Confirmed I think?

Freddy getting drunk whilst on going to the afterlife and ending in the wrong one sounds like a thing he would do.

"Oi, quit hogging the beer humie, yer in our afterlife!"
"Fight me for it!"
"Dem's fightin' words!"

I bet once Fedrick dies, his liver is going to be removed and become a holy relic of some sort.
A liver that has felt the brew of the greatest alcohols, even the divine brew of a dwarven god.

The adventures of freddy's roaming liver!

"My father…is dead," he stares at you. "And I wasn't there to stop it. Or even at least fight alongside him. I got swallowed by my own rage, nearly got killed by a pile of rocks and shit, and missed the chance to battle a Lord of Decay." He does not raise his voice, but every syllable drips with grief and shame.

Then he drags up the Axe of Dargo, the edge as sharp as ever, and holds it dangerously close to his own head.

"So tell me, Frederick, why I shouldn't shave my head right here, and swear myself to Grimnir once more? Tell me why a son who could not fight alongside, could not protect his father, should not feel shame?!" The last word is a tear-streaked growl as he stares at you, holding the axe with incredible steadiness for all that the rest of him trembles.

"You feel ashamed of your actions.. of striking out against the enemy and losing yourself to rage.. but you were acting like a slayer, focused only on glorious death and vengeance instead of on his people or loved ones. It is there that you failed. And do you truly think embracing your failure, dedicating yourself to repeating it over and over, to be a way to remove that shame? To make up for it in any way?

You want to truly make up for the shame of losing yourself? Then do the opposite of what you did. Dedicate yourself to being a good ruler, a king dedicated to his people and family, be the ruler your father would be proud of. Let your father have been the last of the slayer kings. And honor his memory as the last instead of diminishing the good of his actions."

(Probably just make it worse but it's things I'd say or at least think.)

Really enjoying this. Good end to a important section. And shinies are good too.

Also, this was a blitz campaign, what with it being the deepest hold and what not. Had they taken their time or had the Elevator restored, it would have resulted in, probably, less deaths. But, for what looks like a series of assaults and storming previously dwarven fortifications, this was an astonishing success in terms of lives preserved. And now dwarves can party like never before. The fucking RUSH they must be feeling from all the struck grudges with breakneck speed is honestly incomprehensible for humans. I would like to see that touched upon some more, actually. The thread has been talking at length of the significance of this whole ordeal; I'd like to see that manifest in the quest proper. The next grudge ceremony will be a spectacle to watch. Almost no enemies are even alive to write new grudges about and so many Oaths have been fulfilled.

In the tent, Roland d'Mousillon dreamed of a blazing grail held in the distance.
Well shit, that explains all the effort.

If that key is what I think it is Alluminas and Solkan plan on grabbing the means to release their fellow Law god.

On the bright side with the key gone maybe Roland can just grab that Grail after all.
"So…," the White Dwarf thumbed the edge of his axe to draw a bead of blood from it, sniffing once. "Let's talk."

The Sorcerer-Prophet Mulgrumkul, his limbs shorn from him, glared back.
Props to the White Dwarf once more!

It's a good thing that Rot-Toof anf his followers are dead since the damage they could have done out in the world would have been terrible.

Also he grabbed the leader of the Chaos Dwarfs that came around.

With that we can happily say all the leadership of the fighting factions are dead/in no position to ever cause trouble again.
Now, as the rest held back for their own myriad reasons, the Hohenzollern's sat, in your case, or laid down in the matter of your children. Though she had not done it since she was less than ten years of age, Anna rested her head in your lap, shuddering into her sleep as reality finally managed to dig its claws into her and drag her into slumber. You didn't much care about all the oil and blood that stained your thighs, very little of it was hers. Magnus had simply dropped his hammer to the dirt, squeezing you tightly enough that you felt your ribcage creak, and then slumped next to you, leaning his head back against your legs. His knees started bunched up, but as time had gone on they had straightened out. Theirs was the boneless and utterly tensionless sleep that only came after utter and total exhaustion. You do not doubt that this is the first time they've slept restfully in…quite some time. Against the rock you sit on, that Anna lays across, that Magnus holds himself on, lies Urgdug who carried you here. You'd needed his help to get this far, after realizing that your body simply did not allow you to walk about on it as you completely pleased.
The family back together and having a well deserved rest.

It shows how much I have grown to love these characters that my heart aches in joy.
The Grim Notice: Kragg the Grim has learned of the loss of what he crafted for you – and why. He has also informed you that he intends to replace it, and to do so properly, not some haphazardly thrown together piece of garbage. Whenever it shall arrive, you cannot know. But it will, hopefully within your lifetime.
Awesome, people were right that Kragg is more proud that something he crafted together in such a short time was able to find such a fine Doom in such a short time.

Also look forward to a new steelfist in future with more bells and whistles.
The Goldeneye Clan: A clan formed under the agreement of the High King and a majority of ruling individuals of the dwarf race, formerly a mercenary throng sworn to Kazul Goldeneye, who are veterans of over a century of battle across the Old World and even somewhat beyond. This clan is moving towards Ostland, to settle amongst the Dwarf Quarter of Wulfenburg, and while they may retire and become bartenders, brewers, bodyguards, bouncers, or otherwise, they shall not simply give up their gear. Should Wulfenburg be threatened, the Goldeneye may just rise again in defense of it.
Sweet! More dwarfs for our quarter that will also contribute to army in times of emergency.

Seriously, if we expect more population in future we need that Underhold.
  • Trait: Khainite Runes: Carved by those who thought it a gift to their commander, these draw the attention of Khaine himself and allow his influence to flow into the world and blood of those who bear it.

  • Trait: Khornate Runes: Carved by the Changeling, these were introduced into the runic works of the dawi as they sought to preserve Frederick von Hohenzollern's life, the better to channel his bloodlust either into making him fall or to gain the attentions of powerful servants of the Blood God.
Well that explains the more powerful rage moments and glad that is gone.
Trait: Sigmar's Mien
Hey we didn't lose Sigmar's blessing! Guess the Changeling couldn't touch that so that's great!

Also will freak out priests back home and make Magnus laugh in joy.
  • For preserving the Throne of Power and the Dammaz Kron, as well as sundry other noble and heroic acts throughout Karak Ungor including fighting to preserve the life of the High King, a reward has been commissioned by the High King Thorgrim Grudgebearer to reward him.
Oh boy oh boy! Wonder what Urgdug will get!

Be awesome if he got a armor, club, duel steelfist, and bull cannon combo!
Last Of The Rockskulls of Karak Ungor
50 Ogre Warriors
2 Firebellies, Hak and Pak
10 Irongut Ogres
Hmmm, this will require some work to deal with.

Ironguts and Ogre warriors can possibly be reducated like other Maw ogres but the two Firebellies might be better off sent home.

Also sucks we lost the Sky Titan cannon but oh well.
Runelord Kragg the Grim
- Karaz-A-Karak's Anvil of Doom, 2 Anvil Guards
Don't forget the golems unless they are staying in mountain.
1 Knight-Captain Reinhardt Hertwig, Son of Ortrud Hertwig [Comatose, Condition Worrisome]
Need to get this boy to Arthur soon as possible since baring other powerful Morr priests has the best chance to getting Reinhardt out of current state.
Ranger Lord Burli Frostbeard, Shadowy Protector of Karaz Ankor [Dead]
- 250 Frostbeard Rangers
- 50 Longbeard Frostbeard Rangers

Lord Buregar Ironhammer, the High King Who Wasn't, Ruler of the Angrund Clan [Slain By Multiple Jezzail Teams]
Thane Logan Scarbeard, Bulwark Against the Dark Lands [Slain In Combat]
Prince Hargrim Stagbreaker, Breaker of Wild Hunts [Slain In Battle Against The Ork Skorcha da Ghosty ]
Gorrin the Crimson Chisel, Hero of the Mines [Slain Rescuing Surrounded Ranger Contingent In Battle]
Shame so many named dawi died.

Especially generated NPC and friend to Magnus Gorrin, then again I doubt any regret giving their lives for this victory.

@torroar three things I noticed.
1. Freddy still has scarred traits, would those not have been healed after everything like his arm or will they just heal in time with Light of Summer influence?
2. Does Jung not count as a notable kill cause he was so weak?
3. Army list doesn't show Bomber Bird Flocks, did we lose them at some point, they get sent home, or since never entered mountain (just helped in battle near gates) in first place aren't part of the list?

To be a Slayer is not to promise victory, but to promise to do as much as you can. And Garagrim did make a big difference. He saved Roland's life, who in turn saved Frederick's--which bought time for Ungrim and Fenna to arrive to help defeat Skulltaker. And if Garagrim still thinks that he didn't do well enough, then encourage him to make up for it by being the best king the Slayer Keep has had in generations, no matter how impossible such a task might seem.

Side note, but how would the Dawi take a knightly order sworn to uphold the Empire's treaty by helping them out? Because that seems like a good way to provide a level of ongoing support without bleeding us or the empire dry.

Hmmm. Well, now I have to go check through....mmm. Ah, no, I see. You estimated fewer incapables than there were.

It's closer to 10,000 who are not combat-capable at the moment, with 5,000 additionals who could potentially be wholly roused to fighting once more but they'd be the crippled being handed weapons they could barely hold. Of the sum of those two, it is likely that another few thousand will die, 3k-4k range, but others will likely recover given enough ale and time. None of these made the 'list' because the allied army final count was 'hey this is who can hold a weapon and fight' thing.

Cause, yeah, no I was looking at my notes and '30,000? that can't be right...' was spinning in my head. Ya spooked me, GS, ya spooked me good.

Question, did Freddy know it was skulltaker? We all know this guy, but did any of the character recognize him on sight?

"Frederick," Roland's voice is weighted with enough pain to break backs, "That is…Skulltaker. The most favored bloodletter of Khorne. He is…I cannot best him," he hisses at you. "I cannot!"

Roland told us. If we didn't figure it out before.

1. Uh...Frederick got his entire torso opened up...and then all his organs fell out. Yeah, no, there's still a fuck ton of scarring. Wolfgang was more focused on making sure he would live than making him pretty.
2. Eh, I'll add him.
3. Sent flying back home to roost/eaten for rations/died in the bad conditions of the fighting and what not.
