Ice magic is just magic guys. There are hints that the 'ancient window' might have been a slaan but it's not an actual entity blessing them and giving them their spells per divine casting.

The idea that they are priests of the ancient widow is purely a legal fiction so that empire witch hunters aren't allowed to kill ice mages with impunity as if they were magic users they'd have no protection from them. As they are supposed to be the equivalent of priests however (at least during Franz time) witch hunters aren't actually allowed to kill them just for using their magic.
If this was canon you'd be right.

This isn't canon though. It's a mix between Divine and Witch lore here.

...slowly becoming a mix.

Kattarin is bludgeoning her way into making it so, especially considering the Ice Hags named her the Chosen of the Widow.

Which, to be fair, is the kind of thing that might happen when you make a religious extremist who is also head of state...even more religious...because other religious extremists said the first one (Kattarin) are a Chosen One of a religion.

Sure, this religious unrest and growing chasms of differences between various parts of Kislev are making things heavily unstable (the addition of Empire gunpowder which is very suspect and other foreign-entanglements as well not helping) but on the other hand....

...well, she really thinks it's a great idea.

doop doop characters are not perfect in everything they do or think doop doop

I'm not annoyed, I just needed to put my foot down on it.
And I seriously appreciate that.

Very interesting and wonder how this will affect Ice magic overall if the God is partly helping out.

wait someone really did that? I mean use a lighter in a empty petrol tank??

Yup. It was mentioned in one of the Darwin Award books and it cited a newspaper article describing it. - I don't have the copy any more as I returned it to the friend I borrowed it from, so I can't cite exact details, but from what I recall it happened in Brazil in the mid-1980s. The truckie in question had returned to his depot from delivering a load of petrol to a service station, decided to do an inspection but didn't want to waste time getting a flashlight, obviously hadn't heard of fumes, and BOOM!

The Amethyst college is the most rigid and disciplined college regarding rules against even trying things like this.
They're still new enough that there should be at least some chance of changing their minds, under the principle of "finding a way we can be useful aside from killing people in battle helps people accept our continued existence".

The average peasant might still find death mages creepy, but they'll be more willing to tolerate that when they saw their kids go from dying horribly of smallpox to being in perfect health after the death mage came through town.

It's Death Magic, one slip and that kid is dust (or salt for variety). The risk is not worth it.

Indoctrinate, integrate and assimilate them into the (Imperial) cult of Morr.

spoiler alert: Kattarin the Bloody has Trait: Religious Extremist

I'm not kidding around about how serious she is about piety in Kislev.
Cool and she is helping raise up the other Kislev gods as well which is awesome.
People tend to forget how the stats of the character can affect the narrative we see.

And since Freddy has the Dip score of a potato.....

......

Well, atleast Magnus' reaction to his father's policies will be amusing once he takes over Ostland.
That will be funny.

It was Teclis himself who made them do that and they agreed. The Amethyst College has power of death itself, the more powerfull they grow, the stronger the temptation they get to use their power to delay their own death and use necromancy.

No other College can match the austerity, asceticism, and
discipline of Shyish's Magisters, not even the Hierophants of the
Order of Light. As Teclis impressed upon the first Magisters of
this Order three centuries ago, their magic rests upon the line
most easily crossed by short-lived Humans, a line that once
crossed can only lead to darkness, suffering, and misery.

Indoctrinate, integrate and assimilate them into the (Imperial) cult of Morr.
Amethyst College indoctrination (and ruthlessness if need be) is kinda legendary, or it would be if people knew about it.
Along with their extremely careful selection process for initiates
and constant indoctrination and supervision of apprentices,
it is very rare for a serving Amethyst Magister to go renegade.
Four times in the last two centuries the Lord Magisters of the
Order have banded together to hunt down and kill one of their
colleagues. When these hunts were conducted they were done so
in utter secrecy. No one knew or suspected what had happened;
not the witch hunters and not even the Shadowmancers of
the Grey Order. Each time one of their Order turned traitor,
the Lord Magisters of Shyish have pursued and persecuted
them with unparalleled relentlessness and absolute
intolerance. They covered all traces of the traitor's
crimes, destroying his works and
eradicating all memory of him.
Robbed graves were filled and
buried before anyone could
notice, mysterious deaths
were blamed upon natural
causes or common footpads,
and the sudden death of
houseplants, ivy and even moss
across whole city quarters were
blamed upon early frosts or
some unknown parasite.

...THAT now is exactly how you'd go about making your form of magic acceptable by the Empire.

Well, if Shyish wasn't intensely and inherently creepy to anyone who fears death, with limited noncombat applications.

This fills me with worry because when it comes to magic and worship the chaos gods are usually very adept at dropping into the slots being made open by such worship if there isn't an actual god already in existence..

Kattarin is playing with fire Ice. Hopefully she doesn't get burned. Her falling to tzeentch would be... catastrophic.

They need to though.

Whether the chase took days or years, none have escaped the combined wrath of the Lord Magisters of the Lore of Death.

Yet these measures are only fitting to the crimes they are designed to combat. Renegades from the Order of Shyish can become powerful in the arts of necromancy. Although spiritual corruption seems to represent the most obvious threat of Shyish's Magisters to those outside the Order, the greatest threat from the Magisters of the Amethyst Order comes from the threat of morbidity and madness. While the Magisters of many Colleges have their eccentricities, the madness of an Amethyst Magister is a truly terrible thing—and a more likely. occurrence than moral or ideological corruption of an Amethyst Magister.

Though he is unsure and cannot prove anything, Magister Patriarch Reiner Starke of the Order of Shadows believes that the massive defensive counter strike from the Bright Order that destroyed the area around the Bright Order eighty years ago might in fact have been initiated by magic wielded in a confrontation between a deranged Amethyst Magister and the Lords of his Order. Whether this can be proven or not is not Starke's interest, and besides, he would never speak his suspicions even if they could be proven. The Bright Order is proud and combative, and he suspects that the Order of Shyish is more deadly than even the Magisters of the other Colleges expect. He will do nothing to risk prompting a war amongst the Colleges. Altdorf would certainly not survive it.

Well that's more of a death wind thing though, as death magic works by embracing the emotional state of things ending. To be able to use death magic effectively you basically have to be okay with everything dying and accepting that everything ends, good or bad.

I can see why that would drive some people to madness and why that madness would be more disruptive. It's probably the worst wind in terms of how it effects the users mental state long term.

Yes, but I still don't see how using that power to kill diseases and sterilize food is more likely to drive them insane than only using their power to kill people in battle.

Frankly, I'd have figured they'd be the college most in need of something to tie them to humanity, aside from the beast magic one of course.

Dayum.

Four traitors in 200 years? That means that there were generations between them!
They need to though.
...
The [Death Mages] are deadlier than [most of the other mages] suspect?o_O
That probably speaks well of Amethyst discipline, but still.

They have arguably the strongest spells for killing people in the fantasy RPG and that's their 'non battle magic spells' going off the top of my head lifes end which is an opposed willpower test and good luck beating a Wizard lord at that which instantly kills the target no saves apart from opposed willpower.
