To be fair, it's a minor miracle that Starfleet didn't look at it and go: "Yes, it is time to do science. Poke it with sticks until we learn all its secrets" seriously, think about if we had someone that wasn't Challorn's captain. Someone that decided to fuck about with live samples and teams.

And you can't tell me that there are Federation scientists out there that wouldnt.
If we'd gotten unlucky on that event roll...

Say... say! Does anyone remember this?

We have lost all power and are currently operating on Reserve Battery. An unauthorised experiment was run by a member of the Hallark II research team involving a dampening field set up in our cargo bay. I'm told the intention was to suppress interference around long range instrumentation and ... Bugger it.

I don't care what they were doing, their self-perpetuating field has managed to suppress our matter/anti-matter intermix! That shouldn't even be possible! This is infuriating.

What do you think that would do to the Inflictor? Just curious. Does Starfleet already have something other than warp core breaches that will work?

WHERE IS THE "OH FUCK I'M SCREAMING IN TERROR" RATING SO I CAN GIVE IT TO THAT UPDATE

EDIT: LIKE THEY WENT FULL WEYLAND-YUTANI HERE

JUST LEAVING A HORRIBLE BEAST PLAGUE LYING AROUND, WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Politics, conspiracies, power games, executing people who fucked up combined with people keeping secrets to themselves.

With the Romulan modus operandi, something was always going to slip through the cracks eventually. ^-^ They just happened to have, well, let slip a doozy.

That's honestly about the worst thing the Federation could do diplomatically.

The best part is we won't have to do anything, they'll do it to themselves, because that's the sheer magnitude of this fuckup, that they had to openly admit to it! They'll constantly be reminding themselves of that time they fucked up and had to beg the Federation for help to save the galaxy. And the Federation won't even mention it, aside from maybe offering aid shipments.

The stakes have been raised...

All right, so the biophage was not made by the Romulans, but they got ahold of it and let it slip through their fingers.

Well then, their handling of it was poor, hence the current situation. Might as well help them get rid of it before it consumes the galaxy.

Romulans use Singularity cores. If we could cause the The Inflictor's core to implode it might take the whole thing with it.

Yeah the best thing to do is polite forgiveness and offers of aid. Well not aid.. uh, "Tokens of gratitude for helping us stop the Mutaphage". Their shame will do the rest.

ALSO: I have finished listening to all 10 mins of "Now you fucked up" the words have lost all meaning to me. > : |

"And now is the part of the Senate proceedings where, as is tradtion, we listen to that ten-minute audiovisual clip reminding us that we, indeed, fucked up."

If Spock continues the Xenopsych research, he'll probably end up writing an entire paper on How Important This Admission Of Weakness Is To The Romulan Star Empire, and how the federation shouldn't rub salt into their wounds.

Surely it took a lot for them to ask the Federation for help. Let's not rub salt on that... well, slice of humble pie.

As an aside, we know the romulans of the TNG era for sure use Singularity engines; but it is a bit unclear if that's a later development. Personally, I interpret the line that the Romulan ship in "Balance of Terror" was operating on "impulse power" as meaning it was running on fusion power, as an example. Additionally, I don't think they make particular note of the warbird's power systems in the "Enterprise Incident" like they do in TNG.

Something I'm wondering is if how much of the Continuing Committee are new to their posts?

Like, there must have been a hell of a political turnover due to the magnitude of the fuck up

And inviting us here would be an impossibility on the part of whoever used to be in charge.

...so let's tally the Romulan fuck ups here.

1. They had the idiotic idea to try and use an extra-galactic horror as a weapon.
2. When that naturally failed miserably, they did a shit job of getting rid of it.
The stuff is incrediably hard to get rid of. Purging with nuclear fire is really the only way to be sure.

3. Which led to it taking over a Tal Shiar cleanup crew and stealing their shuttle.
4. That it used to take over a HEAVY WARBIRD.
5. And it now has infection beams.
To be fair to the Romulans, the Inflictor/Biophage would have maintained standard comms on theHeavy Warbird had been untill it's identify had been compromised.

I suppose one bright spot is that it's nice to get some confirmation that there are still levels of the Romulan government capable of ordering the Tal Shiar around and it has not in fact slipped its leash to completely control the Empire. Because, you know, it was a possibility that had happened.

This would actually be a really good opportunity for the Senate and Continuing Committee to put them in their place. It would be real easy to dump all the blame on the Tal Shiar, or at least threaten to unless they return to Senate oversight.

For all we know the current Tal Shiar head used to be the head of like one Directorate and the rest of his superiors were "convincedto do the right thing", or disgraced and sent into exile.

Mmm, actually, @OneirosTheWriter , is this enough to have the Federation Council opening the door for Starfleet R&D to Phase Cloaking / Subspace Weaponry?

That wouldn't help enough, Thalaron weaponry maybe?

Honestly we don't need new superweapons, we need specific data on how to track it and detect it, then to destroy it. Because even that Heavy Warbird, all we need to do is shoot it until it explodes and then shoot the debris until there is nothing left. We can already do that.

Our main plan here should be doctrine, and co-operation with the other two big powers
