I'll put my trust in BV for the build plan as always. For the Miranda-B, I think the "combative escort" profile has the balance of escort capability and vanguard capability that we need. We can pull them out from Heavy Metal (or at least some of them) but we do need C-score in vanguard.

I remember I used to have arguments against retiring T'Mir specifically. IIRC since it was a Veteran ship it had stats equivalent to a Centaur-B but with a much higher S score and slanted crew requirements. But with the stat changes it's not quite there anymore, and I'd have to look up my old arguments to argue about it again now. I can't say I feel like that's worth it anymore. Sigh.

Anyways, I know the remaining to-be-Federalized ships might not be much worth adding to the fleet, but if we're force-retiring ships why just the one Oberth specifically? There are other frigates with crew that we could easily pitch if we need to. The 7 Bird-of-Paradise-As are barely better than Miranda-As and can't be refit like the Mirandas can. If we're short on crew why not do this to more ships than just the one remaining non-Starfleet Oberth?

I thought we were keeping the Birds of Paradise for use by the FDS. Even giving them the new name and spiffy paint jobs.

I don't understand. Why are we federalizing an Oberth, while we are at the same time retiring Oberths?

It's kind of a clean sweep thing honestly. If in universe we're saying "It's time to retire the Oberths" (and it is) then might as well just go ahead and hit them all at once. It is a dead class of ship. Even our poorest members and affiliates aren't trying to build them.

I do think there's an idea to send the Birds of Paradise to the FDS to work their dark Betazoid magic there, and you notice they're still being actually built. In face, in theory the Paradise Birds could be refitted... they have official designs and parts lists.

It's almost possible to model the Oberths in the new system, so if we really wanted to it's not impossible to make a refit for them. :V

Not possible to get anything near the original's cost balance or parts year, but we can pretend there was some weird BR for SR swap if we have to.

For anyone interested, BV has been playing with the next couple of years of ship building. Highly subject to change, but expect the last Miranda-A to go into dock for refit somewhere around 2328Q4 and the last Rennie to go into dock for refit in 2327Q3 (tentatively flagged as an Envoy refit).

Also probably see a couple of Sol's 3MT berths left empty for a few years - can be used for repairs, but mainly because we need more crew! ((Current predictions are for 8O 2E 7T spare crew in late 2327 … seriously, ships surviving but with high casualty figures will ruin any build plans - if we take losses, we need to keep the crew but lose the ship! ))

The people who are building the Bird of Paradise are the ones operating under extreme constraints of limited construction infrastructure (they're small) and technology (e.g. the Laio, who were at least a generation or two behind the times not long ago). They're kind of... iffy.

But just as the Oberths frankly make sense as civilian research vessels, the Birds of Paradise make sense as diplomatic courier ships in secure space.

Does it make sense to start scrapping Mirandas to crew Comets? Or do we want to look into a new general light 1/1/1 crew escort frigate for when it is time to scrap the Miranda's?

My only comment is that we are adding (in new builds only) a lot more cargo points than are required to support the new shipping. But I'm sure cp have more uses than just ship supply and I can't work out anything better to do with the berth.

As a small frigate, yes.
Not practical for us to design until 2328 on, really, with Isolinear computers which reduce crew count. Not sure it's a great use of our berth time, but it's possible.

Other thing to realise is that a brand new medium to large frigate design ordered in the upcoming Snakepit will have the prototype finish in 2330 or so.

Isolinear computers are a big deal. They are worth the effort we put in, and there is a reason they are what we are stalling our explorer refits for. We can get some good bonuses out of them, or use them to automate for crew savings that help with small and lean ships.
