Antimatter reactions are rather clean. Torpedoes are ALSO dial-a-yield.
Matter-antimatter annihilation reaction produces photons, which, if energetic enough, decay into (exotic) particles. And you also got this nice em-radiation (gamma+), which interacts with matter.
And the secondary effects like a pressure wave.
And stuff I forgot.
Anyone more up-to-date with the results of matter-antimatter reactions?

Keep in mind that the dial-a-yield photon torpedoes hit ships at Warp factor speeds and detonate without destroying the ship on a single hit even if it struck with the shields down.

It does a lot of damage, cripplingly so in fact, but the ship doesn't disappear in a puff of anti matter.

As such, Star Trek materials sciences (or rather, the Structural Integrity Fields) are all sorts of bullshit, and were probably used on the Gorn Primes.

One multi megaton antimatter bomb might not have been enough for each of them.

I can't tell if the translator is playing with Captain Hrular Krurin's words a little, or if they're just laughing themselves silly every time they sneak another Justice pun in the official log.

On the other hand, Hand Phasers can magically disintegrate objects (and people) without any obvious side effect... if shipscale phasers can do the same....

The Orions shot a photon torpedo at a planetary Syndicate base during the anti-Syndicate campaign. Once. And it was huge news, them effectively being willing to write off large portions of that continent to destroy the base. It probably would have been more memorable if it hadn't happened right before a photon torpedo was used to bomb that Amarki city, and in the narrative I wonder if it was on of the things that helped stave off a an Orion-Amarki confrontation.

"See! We're not too soft on the Syndicate. We used anti-matter on them like they just used it on you. We photon torpedoed one of our own continents like your city just got hit."

Write off large portions of a CONTINENT? The fuck did they use, some sort of stockpiled Orion Empire strategic weapon? Single digit megaton range blasts don't DO that. Low/mid double digits don't do that either. Megaton range is kill a city.

Fired with the settings you'd use for bunker-bustering (subterranean burst) you'd need a multigigaton weapon for fuck that continent.

Well maybe I exaggerated a little. This is the actual quote:

Duaba Broadcast News Corp

We interrupt this broadcast with a breaking news report. Five minutes ago, opposed-entry drop shuttles launched from orbiting Union Navy starships, headed for unknown targets on the surface. Diffuse phaser fire is being exchanged with exurban areas and orbit.

Another breaking report! A tremendous flash of light and a mushroom cloud has been spotted on the southern continent. We have unconfirmed reports that a photon torpedo strike was launched on what had been believed to be uninhabited land on the southern continent.

We are now being deluged with reports and can only conclude that the long-awaited assault of government forces has begun. We-

Anti-Slavery Task Force Progress Report

Biggest news first: mid-way through the month, the Union unleashed their crackdown on Duaba. Apparently the trials in Amarkia are making it too politically difficult to take the slow approach, and they needed to wrest the narrative away. In the opinion of the staff of the ASTF, this is an extraordinarily poor rationale and approach. But it is their government and world. We may only hope that it produces results without the costs we anticipate.

Of course, it is already bloody. Neither side is pulling punches. Ships in orbit used a photon torpedo barrage to obliterate a hidden Syndicate base in wilderness areas rather than assault it. Hundreds of government soldiers and security services personnel have died assaulting prepared Syndicate positions, and flooding downtown areas. Despite this, they have made massive waves of arrests, and the Syndicate is rapidly losing its ability to operate in a coordinated manner on Duaba. Of course, the real question will be how well can the Union forces handle it when the Syndicate goes to ground. In an uglier reversal, a complex ambush on landing zones for one SSD-Reserve unit resulted in over half the unit being killed outright.

Maybe just small portions of a continent. But still, it was definitely a huge deal.., or would have been, if the Lironh bombing hadn't occured in literally the same update.

On the other hand, photon torpedo explosion in Lironh killed what, two hundred thousand? Not much for a multi-megaton explosion in the downtown of a big city.

Our hails were accepted, and - while it took the universal translator a moment to work out their unusually high-pitched language - the new contact has proven friendly. The Daw are slightly smaller-than-average semi-humanoids whose arms have evolved into a functional pair of wings while still leaving a pair of fingers for fine manipulation, as well as their unusually long and dexterous toes.

In addition to the pair of small, warp-capable vessels, the alien fleet includes a trio of "carriages" that use a tractor beam to attach themselves to one of the larger cosmozoan species native to this system and "steer" the organism with a series of magnetic pulses that it appears receptive to. Apparently, this is considered something of an exciting sporting event, and they have come here to capture several more specimens for use in such in their core systems. The ships themselves appear to be of a lower technological level, perhaps equivalent to the mid twenty-third century Federation.

That sounds kind of awesome.

The Daw home system is very well guarded, and the first planet that appears to be their homeworld likewise, but not by the Daw themselves. As soon as we came within close range, a quartet of Ittick-Ka vessels moved to intercept us and demanded to know why we are violating their space. When I explained that we came to speak with the Daw government, the vessels escorted us to within transporter range of a much larger, 2.4 megaton Ittick-Ka ship in geosynchronous orbit above the capital city.

Any who wish to treat with the Daw, we have been told, must do so with the permission of Governor-General Kit'l'tk'kt, who governs this system and its inhabitants under the auspices of the wise Seven Sages of the Ittick-Ka Imperium.

Oh-ho, finally the Ittick-Ka show up again! Very interesting hints about their practices and government. If they have five ships hanging around the planet, the Daw must be an important part of their colonial empire.

The prospector's captain turned out to be the anomaly. He joined the Diaspora colonists just last year, shortly after his wife and brother were taken into custody on Bajor on suspicion of subversive activities. The evidence he had of foul play in the disease outbreak was fabricated. The cardassians, for their own part, appear to have long walked the tightrope of acceptable deviation from the Cardassian Union's acceptable political and philosophical norms for many years. I have a feeling that some Legate stationed on Bajor thought he could win some brownie points by killing two birds with one stone by making the diaspora Bajorans look bad while getting them to kill off some undesirables.

The cardassian pilgrims have been returned to Hajatar, while the bajorans will be facing trial. The crew, I think, will be getting off much more lightly than their captain.

[Gain +5 pp, +5 Cardassian Agitators tag (now at 92/100)]

Oh, so close! Just another 8 and we can beat the tag entirely and affiliate the diaspora.

Justice will descend upon a civilian ship bearing "influential Tauni observers" to a ceremony on Okatha's moon of Ekathil before it can reach Honiani space.
There seems to have been a panic aboard the two ships when their occupants realized that Justice had come for them.

They agreed to be boarded, but failed to mask their weapon signatures from the eyes of Justice,

You know, there are captains who would do anything to be able to make puns like that.

Captain's Log, Stardate 27724, USS Atuin - Captain Hassan Aharani

After some delaying, the Ittick-Ka were willing to meet with my officers and I aboard the vessel that they referred to as Governor-General Kit'l'tk'kt's "Palace." We observed a number of daw employed as servants and low-level technicians or laborers in the vessel's exterior arboretum or "courtyard," but none once we were invited below deck.

Kit'l'tk'kt was initially suspicious of our purpose here, and I have a feeling he had been planning to take us hostage when he first invited us to his vessel. I was able to remind him of the Federation's nearness and power without coming across as overtly threatening, and in the end he gave us permission to speak with the Daw's own government.

This may not be particularly meaningful, however. The Daw are allowed to police themselves and manage most of their internal affairs, but all foreign policy - trade and resource exploitation particularly - is dictated to them by Governor-General Kit'l'tk'kt, who in turn is beholden to the Ittick-Ka Imperium's own central government.

I'm getting a very British Empire vibe from the Ittick-Ka. From now, to me they're 19th century Brits in space. Who are also bugs.

The Red Claw has now been rendered a nonentity, and Alano-Ni-Lekhept driven into quiessence. The KLC, it is believed, will now be unwilling to operate outside of Tauni space in the near future. Ultimately, Starfleet's role in disrupting this attack, while critical, was only a small part of the operation.

[Gain +5 pp]

Hopefully that was the last major gasp of opposition to the Honiani coalition joining the Federation.

OBAR: You know who didn't contribute any terrorists? Us! They had to import a third group of terrorists from the Tauni to make up the numbers.

We've reached an agreement to provide them with assistance in outreach and negotiation. The dissidents we have recovered so far, mostly from the working class, will assist us in coming up with ways for the nobility to find support.

Well, there is our second Blooded Miranda-A!

Edit: for anyone wondering what the stat line of a Blooded Miranda-A is:

C4 S3 H3 L4 P2 D2

C4 - makes it comparable to our newest frigate designs (Centaur-B/Comet).
S3 - equal to a Centaur-A, but inferior to anything newer.
H3 - as good as a Comet
L4 - as good as a Centaur-B or Kepler, inferior to a Comet.
P2 - better than an Oberth, but that's it. At least the crew are polite.
Doesn't raise D, so still unlikely to make a run to anything that isn't in it's immediate vicinity.
Our first Blooded Miranda-A that got the level up from normal event success rather than from plot victory awards.

Agile leveled up as a reward for Stol's commando raid during Nash vs Cardassia, Fleet Action Edition.

*reads update involving Ittick-ka*

*Schadenfreude intensifies*

Perhaps we can actually get a diplo report on them on 2322?

Another reminder that we should put a task force on the Gorn as soon as reasonably possible. Losing the Dawiar to them wouldn't be as bad as having them be Cardassian, but it's not great, with their great power ambitions.

Well, having a task force on the Dawiar probably helps with that as much as a Task Force on the Gorn themselves. But sure, I think 2323 is definitely the year of the Gorn Task Force (if something more urgent doesn't come up).
