Except that Starfleet's job is not being a military. Starfleet is weird because it's at most a para military organisation handling military problems.

But do keep in mind that when the President said 'lost those battlecruisers' the admiral of Starfleet had to squash the urge to protest. Starfleet's culture is entirely about keeping the guns cold as much as possible. It's just that space is not for the timid.

or it could be because of the improper notation of our ships, Starfleet has a very anti-jingoistic ideology, so using pure warship names would be also seen as a bad idea (plus battlecruisers were a crummy design idea to begin with, so there are ample reasons for the Admiral to feel the need to protest)

And there is nothing paramilitary about starfleet, it is fully military, like I said emphasis is in exploration followed by defense of member states, but as this scenario shows we do go on offensive wars if needed.
Of course, at this stage I am going to ask you your definition of military organization, because obviously we might be operating under different deffinitions

I refuse to believe that the Federation President doesn't have access to all our intel and battle reports.

Eh, I think such an action would have had less to do with what the president wants and much more with the general public opinion which would have likely reacted very badly to such losses. This war/intervention is already far from popular and big losses will result in somebody ending up being blamed (because I am pretty sure that nobody is telling the public that this conflict is that risky...). And from a political perspective Sousa or the theatre commander are two most likely "sacrifices"... It isn't fair but it is how public opinion and politics works..

More seriously though N'Gir shows her inexperience in a really subtle way: asking Sousa to resign there would cut a political animal loose after you've very publically wounded her. She's going to stroll into the offices of the biggest publisher/content mill in the Federation and be like "HEY EVERYONE, WHO WANTS TO READ A TELL-ALL ABOUT OUR SHITTY PRESIDENT AND ALSO THERE'S WAR STUFF"

Insult to injury would be releasing it right in N'Gir's election cycle. Or when a bunch of development seats are up for grabs.

Someday, I want one of our adrimals to get a hug from Stesk. He's the only person it would be ok to get one from. And the only one who's hug would matter.

Dude is my hero

Well all the Caitians are on shaky ground. Maybe she'll lose her seat.

I think the thing that really sets me off is that the president advocating this war, who we specifically stepped in to warn that confidence in her was floundering- had the fucking nerve to assume that Sousa for whatever reason 'would have to be dragged screaming' into whatever post-war plan they had setup which means;

  1. She has no idea what Sousa's actually like
  2. That she really had no intent on working with Sousa rather than simply ordering her around
  3. That's she's willing to be belligerent towards the admiral that tried to helpfully get her back on track
  4. She's under the impression SF is far more militant/in favor of war than it actually is
And then the battlecruiser bullshit on top of flat out telling Sousa she would have fired her had the hilariously good casualties been any worse. It just shows an utter lack of understanding of the issues in so many ways.

The threat of firing Sousa seems to basically be her attempt to regain face by simultaneously scapegoating Sousa while also undermining the credibility of SF in favor of gaining credibility of her own. This hardline stance of hers only makes sense if she's still nervous about the lack of faith in her administration and thinks being seen as decisive is most important.

A Pacifist president wouldn't be in war in the first place, but if they were, I can't see Stesk making that comment. Maybe one of his young protégés, but wise old man Stesk?
Stesk strikes me as the sort who knows wars have casualties, and that's why he wants to avoid them. Stesk would probably also have made more transparent communications about the efforts of the FDS and the like, I'd think. We might have gotten more options and input to try and make this not happen as a ware....

Sousa would probably do that just to try and safeguard Starfleet, worrying that N'Gir's continued presence in the POTF chair would genuinely risk the 'Fleet.

So I put together a preliminary 2316 fleet distribution plan based on the (questionable) assumption that this was the last major battle of the war and we won't have any more ships damaged/destroyed, and that everything will be back to normal by 2316.Q1. What do you think? Notice that in Q3 all the Rennies head to the GBZ to kick some Cardassian ass.

"To be honest, I expected that I may have to drag you kicking and screaming to play your part after the battering everyone has been taking around these Arcadian worlds. If those two battlecruisers" - and here you have to physically bite your tongue - "hadn't been recoverable, I may have been forced to ask for your resignation.

Have I said I don't like N'Gir?

Because I really dont't like N'Gir.

Here is a quote from just three and a half months ago:
"The President knows she is short on experience here, she'll probably listen," says Langford. "But if she doesn't, if you threaten to resign, well, she's a savvy enough politician to know it will collapse her Presidency if you resign."
Now sure since then we've "won" the war against the Licori but I'm not sure that much has really changed.

Oh and something else that takes on a new, even more damning, context now:
"The President's background is purely industrialist," explains Councillor Stesk, sitting next to Councillor Langford. "Even during the Caitian-Dawiar War, President N'Gir had little direct involvement with the Grand Fleet. Instead she was responsible for the duplication of key production."
"We hold grave concerns that the new President is approaching this war in a less than logical, well-informed process."
It may very well be that despite reading our reports President N'Gir doesn't quite understand how tough the opposition was. We know, OOC, it was quite possible to have flat out lost that battle along with multiple ships, including an Excelsior or two IIRC, if we were unlucky. The President meanwhile is almost certainly only thinking about how close we came to losing eight year's worth of ship and the terrible PR of losing one of the Federation's great Excelsiors less then a month after it's launch.

I think it's very optimistic to think that we'll be able to draw down the entire LBZ war force by 2316.Q1. If that was possible, I'd be in favor, but I simply don't think it is.

On the assumption, however, that we can...

Sydraxian Border Zone – Requires D9 / High Alert D5
  • Current - 1 Constellation (3) [Selaya], 1 Centaur-A (3) [Yukikaze], Starbase I (5) [Vega] = 11D
  • 2316.Q1 – 1 Constitution-B (5) [Hood], 1 Centaur-A (3) [Yukikaze], Starbase I (5) [Vega] = 13D
  • Notes: In Q1, Hood send from LBZ and Selaya send to Rigel sector.

High-P ships, paging high-P ships to the SBZ. Seriously, deploy an Excelsior or a Rennie here and stop using Connie-Bs, that isn't what the poor Connies are for. e: In fact, the Cheron could be of use here.

e: The GBZ could use a science ship for minefield penetration and fleet scouting. Take the Inspire from Tellar?

Other than those notes, it's fine. What about a plan where we have to maintain at least two task-forces worth of ships in the LBZ? That would approximately halving our initial force, and is what I think the realistic situation will be.

"I'm glad that we'll have Starfleet on board voluntarily for this," replies the President . "To be honest, I expected that I may have to drag you kicking and screaming to play your part after the battering everyone has been taking around these Arcadian worlds.
There is a more charitable interpretation of President N'Gir's remarks - she was expecting Starfleet to drop this whole operation as soon as they could manage, given how clearly reluctant Sousa's participation was from the outset*. Having Admiral Sousa come to her office saying, "Let's talk about what comes next!" isn't making her happy, but in her position, I don't think much of anything could be expected to make her happy right now.

[Edit]
* I should add, in conjunction with Sousa's expected reaction to casualties we received during the recent operations. Nobody wants to feed personnel to the proverbial meatgrinder if they don't have to, after all.

Whereas I think it's almost impossible that we won't draw down the entire LBZ war force by 2316.Q1. There is going to be internal heavy pressure to sign a peace treaty and go home unless the Licori are completely unable to pull their shit together and present a unified negotiating front. The Member Fleets don't want to be out there if they don't have to be. The Member worlds hate that we're missing response rolls because we pulled all the Starfleet ships away.

You may think it's a poor tactical position, but I will be highly surprised if our ships haven't essentially cleared the sector by Q1 next year.

The Yukikaze is a Blooded ship and so has Presence 4.

I dunno, that depends on how many Member World fleet ships stay so it's hard to plan for.
