Super Robot Quest

I vaguely remember Kouji Kabuto but Tetsuya Tsurugi escapes me.
Kouji Kabuto is the protagonist of Mazinger Z. Tetsuya Tsurugi is the protagonist of Great Mazinger.

Here you can see both of them in action.

Tetsuya is effectively the adopted son of Kouji's missing father, Kenzo Kabuto, and was pretty much raised from birth in order to be a pilot. As a result, he is very, very good at killing shit, especially since his Great Mazinger is pretty much a straight upgrade compared to Mazinger Z...but hes got a ton of issues. All of which are brought to the forefront when hes forced to work with Kouji, who he fears will replace him since Kouji is Kenzo's real son.

He's also Kouji's uncle in the Shin Mazinger reboot, being his mother's long lost brother.

Another instance where we sadly never got to actually see him in action in the animation. Wasn't until SRW V that Shin Mazinger's interpretation of Tetsuya was really explored.

Which I'll forgive them for, because he's in top form there.

....wait the review is coming up?! I don't recall if we have another super robot squad she asked for ready....at least I don't think in the level of the Beo

Hell yeah. Great Mazinger was one of my favorite/best robots in that game (I beat it recently. It was exactly what I thought it was going to be, as in awesome. Though I could've done without Cross Ange).

And when it got the Great Emperor G upgrade....my god.

We're fine, we fielded a late prototype that acquitted itself well.
Except for the loss of the carrier we are actually doing pretty good and I wouldn't be surprised if we have a second super robot in operation by the end of the third year if we do things just right.

A Commander's Burden to Bear
No, this is not the evaluation come early. But I had an itch to write something from Galbinus' point of view. Not sure how it came across, but I just wanted to type this out.

0344, 23 December A.D. 2071
Legion Enclave

"...nah, still got nothing," Hotwire grumbled. With a sense of finality, he depowered the transmitter and slammed the case shut. "Still can't get any transmissions out to Mekaen. And if there's any Dominion ships out there, they're sure as the Depths not coming out this way."

"You did what you could, Hotwire," Galbinus assured the technician. "Let it be for now, and we will try again another time." Inwardly, Galbinus sighed in disappointment, but he couldn't let Hotwire - or anyone - see that. "In the meantime - "

" - comms maintenance?" Hotwire finished. When Galbinus nodded, the smaller Kaus sketched a salute before configuring and driving off. Major Devin called it a 'technical truck.' Wistfully, Galbinus only wished his problems were as simple as Hotwire's. He supposed every leader shared this envy; your subordinates only had to worry about their individual sections, but your job was to balance their efforts to the wider picture.

And said wider picture...as he made his way through the halls of the Enclave, Galbinus wondered sometimes what it really looked like. Here we are at the hospitality of the humans, he processed, in halls built by their hands that look close to home. But the details are...off. Just slightly wrong. An interpretation of home, but a constant reminder that it is not. He nodded to Architect as they both passed by, though the consistently busy engineer continued to mutter to himself. Something about a 'quadrilateral panel.' Yet with their help, we have been able to consistently fight back against Tyrannous' raids. I just wish we did not have to impose on them to do it.

"Herald," Galbinus said as he entered the command center. Something of a grand name for what was just a symmetrically square room with the primary systems linked to that of the Metatrine's Shield, but it served its purpose well. "Is there anything to report?"

"Negative," came the deep, monotone reply. "Free Brother activity: Negligible." The slim Kaus looked up at Galbinus respectfully, but immediately turned back to the holographic processor. "Drop off in activity: Identified correlation with attacks on human population centers." Where other Kausen would have a face of some sort, Herald's was simply that of a completely blank slate. No eyes, no mouth. Just a simple opaque plate that flickered with light to denote speech. More than a few of the Legionnaires found this off putting, but Galbinus had long since learned to trust Herald's analyses. "Highly unusual: Insufficient evidence to make conjecture."

"Nothing was reported?" Galbinus asked, his tall form already hunched over the holographic display. "Nothing on the North American continent?" Historically the Free Brothers had always favored hitting this particular continent. At first because it was the first one they happened to make landfall on two solar cycles prior. But then it was also because that was where the Shield had managed to make its escape to.

The Belligerent only ever had three drop ships. Galbinus did not think for a moment that Tyrannous ever forgave him for depriving him of one.

"Negative," Herald replied. "Scanners of Metatrine's Shield: Detected aerial scouts. Likelihood of additional raids in near future: Unlikely."

"Which could mean big bad Tyrannous tried to sneak something in," a higher pitched voice said from the side. Turning, Galbinus saw Cavalier walking in, with Jessica sitting on his shoulder. "Wouldn't be surprised; I know our attention was kind of split last month."

"Interruption of briefing to Legion Commander: Rude," Herald said flatly.

"Well, you've done the same to everyone else on the ship," Cavalier pointed out.

"That: Different matter."

"It's alright, Herald," Galbinus said with another internal sigh. He was never going to hear the end of it. "I trust you are well, Jessica?"

"Good enough," Jessica shrugged. "Just wish I could be doing more."

"I would not worry so much," Galbinus said. Despite himself, he found a genuine smile crossing his facial plate. "In fact, you will not find a single Kaus who will think you, out of anyone, have not done enough."

"Huh?" Jessica blinked. "But-"

"Jess," Cav said with a grin. "Think about where we're standing in."

"Well, duh," Jessica said, still not quite catching on. "The Enclave. But-"

"Ensign Satsuma: Responsible for a great deal," Herald commented. "Intermediary with Earth Union: Responsible for normalization of relations."

"Without your help," Galbinus said gently, "This structure would not exist. The Earth Union would not realize there are two sides to this conflict. And we would not be this much closer to bringing Tyrannous to justice." The smile remained. "Wanting to do more is natural, Jessica. It is just a sign of youth." He gave Cavalier a meaningful glance; the scout resolutely refused to look humbled. Ah, to be young and unburdened with legacy firmware. "Do not let anyone gainsay your contributions. You have already done so much; I refuse to believe the universe does not have a greater plan without you involved."

"...heh," Jessica chuckled slightly, rubbing the back of her head. "Thanks, Galbinus."

"Think nothing of it," he said, but he found himself bemused at another set of emotions: Amusement. And here I was, thinking my situation was insurmountable, he chuckled to himself. Yet then I go praising Jessica for all the things she has done for us. He put the next partition of his thought to voice: "Eliminating the Free Brothers is no simple road, but we will reach the end eventually."

Several solar cycles ago, Galbinus would have been thinking about simply restoring his name in the Mekaen Dominion. Now?

Now he found himself...content with his problems. For all the headaches it gave, the Legion - a name he was still embarrassed by - was his responsibility, his family. And in the name of great Metatrine (may His embers fuel your core), he would do everything in his power to keep them safe.

Well that was an interesting and informative pov switch. Thanks Boss.

"Yeah, those things! So it shows up out of nowhere, starts trying to eat tourist ships. We're not that far, so Mercury and I are able to show up before anyone can get hurt. We have this big fight, I've got him where I want him. Then what does he do?" Hiroki's face has a look of disgust and frustration, not too far off from what Richard just had. "He then goes and tries to eat the Ferris Wheel!"

"What."

"I know! It eats half of it before I gave it a Blizzard Blast and then punch through it. It's all done and everything, but I'm just sitting there thinking, 'What an asshole!'" He puts a palm to his face at the memory. "And don't get me started about Manila last year..."
Huh, looks like Kaijiu targeting priorities are weird, we know they are supposed to Top Priority Mercury right?

Why smash a Ferris wheel?!
Eh, it's okay. The Timberwolf tanked energy beams, angry claws and more with little damage received..

We know the numbers. Its much closer than it looked if one of the Kaijiu finishers hit

The Kaiju probably came to the conclusion that being invertebrate was holding it back. It probably thought to rectify this by eating the Ferris wheel so the structure could act as an endoskeleton, but Mercury V defeated it before it could evolve.

Now i cant help but imagine Devin with ridiculous anime style spiked hair with a weird color; and the reaction from his superiors.

At least it would solve loss of hair, right?

Yep, it checks all of the "grimderp" flags. The video also goes as far as to have the protagonist lose to make the newcomer look even more awesome, but at least Kabuto got it less bad than it usually gets.

they're sure as the Pits not coming out this way."

Wasn't in Transformers a similar insult?

Oh, a not-Shockwave. And here I went and made Architect behave like this in a previous omake. Oh well, I couldn't have known that.

End of Year Evaluation - A.D. 2071
0900, 29 December, A.D. 2071
Unity Station, Yearly Review

"I'll be honest with you, Major," Peters says without preamble. "I'm not sure where to even start with this year."

"The Legion?" you suggest. "The Regent? The-"

"You bloody well know what I'm talking about," she grumbles. "Granted, these are good problems to have, but you and your organization have made this a busy year." She sighs; you do notice that the actual hardcopy paperwork sitting on her desk has increased by a fair amount. "But let's get the positives out of the way before anything else."

Uh oh. "Should I be worried, Ma'am?"

"Perhaps, perhaps not. Still, you know how this works. Let's get to it, shall we?"

Yearly Review

Deeds

Legio Galbinus Enclave - I will admit this was something of a coup for us. Granted, this is part of the reason why my bloody paperwork started multiplying when I wasn't looking, but this office has gotten much more political clout thanks to opening relations with the Dominion representatives on Earth. If you'd done nothing else, I would have given you a more than fair hearing on this evaluation.

My thanks to Cadet Satsuma and Lieutenant Callaghan for making this particular bit happen.

Axiom - I admit I am a little skeptical about that particular service, but considering that's technology you're bringing back home, I won't object too much. As long as the Legion remains friendly, this is a heavy hitter that isn't fighting us.

'Zulu' -
I've kept this one under wraps, but I've read your reports on this one. Aside from the...interesting start you and the Intelligence Services had in interrogating him, keep at this one. Showing we've turned one of the enemy Kaus will be more outside pressure we can ward off of our offices.

Negotiations with the Regency of Varulne - Personally, I agree with you about taking your time in negotiating with that thing. We've ensured Galbinus and his mob stay on our side; we have nothing to compel the Regent to do the same. As soon as you have determined what it wants and what it will give, contact me.

Politicking - Job bloody well done for getting the Intelligence Services on our side. Granted, that means they're going to want more out of us, but the DFRI is now seen as an investment worth safeguarding. I would still take measures to ensure your own security, but maintain your working relationship with Ms. Smith.

And yes, Ms. Smith, if you're hearing this, we want to keep you on our side.

Colonel Kim continues to sing your praises from the pulpit, and the Marines seem interested. Keep pressing that angle, Major.

Deployments

Base Defense - Though I congratulate you for seeing off the Warlord, I would not count him out. Yes, I bloody well know you forensically confirmed his death. There's such a thing as a 'legacy,' and I don't doubt that some addled numpty in the Westphalian ranks is eager to take up that name again.

Still, you proved without a doubt that we can take on the separatists with what we have. Well done here.

Naval Base San Diego - I will tell you this, Major - the Senior Service will always raise merry hellfire no matter what you do. I have some ideas on how to mend that particular bridge, just keep watch for it come January. But all in all, an excellent debut for the Beowulf.

New York - Give my thanks to Lieutenant Tellison, Major. Colonel Kim praised his performance in clearing the way for reinforcements to flow into the city, and the Perseus has turned more than a few eyes.

Though in the future, try not to be so eager to throw their misconduct out into the wild. That particular knife can be used in closed discussions.

Defense Force Assets

Command Center - I won't linger long on this one, Major. I know you have plans lined up for this one. And after this evaluation, we will be speaking more on what I'd like to see out of it.

Security Net - I don't blame you for investing in this after the Warlord fiasco. Again, I won't linger here, but these are excellent first steps. I would feel more comfortable if you expanded on these in the following year, though.

Pegasus-class - Would you believe I've had inquiries already lining up asking about licensing?

For the record, do not just give it out. Let the envy build up, would you?

New Facilities - Motor Pool (inventory expansion), Radar Tower, Outposts

Engineering Assets

Supercomputer AI Advisers - I admit I had my doubts about them, but they've proven to have exemplary behavior. Do not be surprised if you start seeing calls for expanding their ranks, Major.

K-Class Materials - I won't be disseminating any plans for this one. You and possibly the Yukimura Institute are the only ones who could possibly make use of. Worst case scenario, the Westphalians catch on. This is a significant advantage, Major. Keep developing it as far as you can. Particularly with the Dragon's Horn.

Arc-class Weaponry - Of all the things you could have made, you went with a bloody sword and cannon that spits out lightning. I am not doubting the effectiveness, but do your robots need to do quite so much posing? ('The pilots and my exec will claim they're within their rights to do so.' - MAJ Devin)

Science Assets

Xenotechnology - I am very pleased with the technology you were able to negotiate out of the Legion early in the year. I'm also quite pleased to see that Anti-Gravity and our own version of Zirvitium Armor. Good Lord, those are going to have some implications for the Union a decade down the road.

I want to see more developments from this, Major. Keep at it.

ESP Theory - While I have seen advancements such as the K-Suit and the Psychic Theater in this field, only the K-Suit has really yielded any solid results in this regard. But I will give credit where it's due; I can see Carlson has ideas on where to take this.

You won't get specific funding from me on Force Fielded doors, however. I'll advise you to budget for that on your own.

Energy Shard - When this reaches its full regenerative potential, I want to know. This is something that will send shocks in the energy industry if this gets out into the wild. If we do this, we're going to do so very damn slowly, or the 2028 crash is going to look like a mild recession.

New Facility - Xenotech Laboratory

Combat Unit Types Available

CR-01 Jackal
CR-02 Phalanx
CR-03 Steed (No formations; in active use by the Intelligence Services)
CR-04 Shade (Exclusively used by the Intelligence Services)
V-33 TMU

SCR-01 Beowulf (w/Timberwolf and Foxhound configurations)
SCR-01E Banner
SCR-02 Perseus
SCR-03E 'Valkyrie'

In closing: a very productive year, Major.

We've gone public and unveiled the Beowulf and the Perseus. The Beowulf passed with flying colors publicly, the Perseus performed solidly with the ranking officers in the know. We have an understanding and cooperative stance with the Legion. And we've taken steps to consolidate our position in the Defense Force hierarchy.

My task for you this year:

Refine what you have. I would normally be critiquing you about not quite getting to the second Super Robot team, but given what's happened this year, I am content to call it 'close enough.' I will not hold you to it for now, but see if you can get a third Super Robot in the testing phases by the end of the year.

But bottom line: I want to see two refined Super Robot teams, and I want to see them taking the fight to the bastards that keep trying to upend us. I will make sure you have the authority to recruit more formations from the wider EUDF pool, just make sure we're not sitting on our hands this year.

Stellar Evaluation! You may pick one bonus from below. The chosen bonus will remain active for the following year (Twelve Turns):

[] Streamlined Resource Flow - For One Action this turn, you may discount the Cost by -1 RP (you cannot reduce a Cost to 0 or below). This will refresh the next Turn.

[] Applied Support - Designate one Action with a Test Roll this turn. It will automatically succeed, but there will be no outstanding effects. This will refresh every other Turn (if used on Turn One, Year Three, this will refresh for Turn Three, Year Three).

"Now," Peters concludes, "the not so pleasant part." She stares straight at you. "A certain General Armistead is here on Unity Station. And he wants to meet you."

"...shit."

"Quite."

Well. Looks like you both couldn't avoid each other forever, it seems. "How bad is it, Ma'am?"

"He's not pleased with me," she says matter-of-factly, "And he's quite cheesed off with you. I think you've torpedoed quite a few of his ambitions."

"With him doing what? Sitting on his hands while Grand Coulee burns?" you demand. This is ridiculous!

"Just calm down," she says. "The Intelligence Services are in your corner, so there's not very much he can do to you. But he requested a meeting." She glances at you while checking some notes. "It's up to you if you want to humor him, but do keep in mind the basic decorum. Generals calling for you is not something you can turn down without losing face, you know."

"Even you?" you ask.

"Especially me."

Well. Time to think about this.

[] Turn him down. Reputation be damned, you want nothing to do with the man. Let him snarl at you over video calls if he wants.

[] At least meet with him. For someone who's known as your biggest critic, you don't know a whole lot about him. And Anna hasn't been able to come up with much. Time to meet the man in the flesh.

- [] What kind of approach do you want to take with him?

Well, isn't this an interesting problem.

I don't think we can afford NOT to meet with him, both in regards to office politics and in regards to personally checking out a man who our intelligence liason swears is up to something...but I have absolutely no idea how to handle it.

[X] Streamlined Resource Flow - For One Action this turn, you may discount the Cost by -1 RP (you cannot reduce a Cost to 0 or below). This will refresh the next Turn.
[X] At least meet with him. For someone who's known as your biggest critic, you don't know a whole lot about him. And Anna hasn't been able to come up with much. Time to meet the man in the flesh.
-[X] He's going to bluster and complain, what you want to know is why. Fortunately, angry people don't tend to watch what they're saying, especially if they've attributed you to being some kind of puppet for his enemies or something like that. Let him vent, let him complain, and take notes. Because you can't really imagine any legitimate cause for him to be so bloody well furious with you, when he could have leveraged this into being a bloody hero instead. The fact he was unable to adapt to take overall credit suggests he's not actually very good at internal politics, and you've seen that his abilities aren't so great as to have gotten his position on merit alone.

Maybe someone has a better idea for how to word the meeting, but unless he's going to secretly turn out to be a westphalian suicide drone ready to self-detonate on confirmation of the target, he's going to bitch and complain. What I want to know is what's his game, because if he was a political officer, he'd at least have the ability to roll with the DFRI's goals, and he certainly didn't get to his current position on any particular merits or we'd know it by now.

Hell, just finding out if he's evil--but competent would be a coup, because we'd know then that he could have taken advantage of our position to further his career--but as we've seen so far, he hasn't, which suggests that he wanted us to try and utterly fail, and staked just about everything on it to a degree that he couldn't pivot later. His actions don't make any sense for anything but criminal incompetence--and someone getting to a flag rank when they have zero actual applicable skills seems a stretch--even a political officer can't do that unless they're personally responsible for a significant portion of the entire Union's funding, and even then, you'd figure they'd give him a ceremonial position instead of a spot with actual responsibilities.

Have to agree with you on this, something about this is just fishy and this guy is just...off.

@Alectai I hope you don't mind me adding a bit of expansion to the plan in terms of our general approach. I just think that one of the best ways for us to come out of this relatively well is to not raise to any bait he may set out for us.

Is Streamlined Resource flow really a slam dunk? It is nice to have a straight 1 RP bonus every turn, but the Applied Support lets us auto-succeed on a light investment every other turn.

I'm not sure how the math works out exactly but I think Applied Support effectively lets us save at least a little RP while also offering a unique effect that we can't otherwise buy with RP.
