ObsidianNoir: Become the Fluff
Become The Fluff

One good thing with apparent avatars of nature was that food and water wasn't exactly an issue, so being a hobo avoiding civilization worked a lot smoother than Lea expected. Well, she wasn't sure if they were actual avatars or guardians or whatever or actually some escaped experiment of the madman Sheol or his hippie twin brother, but it was the best theory she had at hand. No way something artificial could be so in touch with their surroundings. Heck, Gaius was basically a disney princess with how birds landed on him and chilled.

Still, infinite food or not, even she was starting to get a bit sick of fruit. Munching on an apple they made she frowned deeply. She loved the two. Really, she did. But damn it, she needed some human interaction too. Not to mention she felt horribly out of touch with current events since they were hiding out in the wild. The rare newspaper thrown out by insensitive campers wasn't exactly helpful. Sure, what she held in her hands was actually from today, if she didn't lose her sense of time entirely. And yet... it told her nothing.

"Mercury V, blabla, Valiant, yadda, new development thing, attacks... "

Nothing about her or the fluffy guys. She scoffed. She probably would have better information from the net, but for the newspaper? A relatively local thing. Probably big news at the time but it has been too long since then. With a sigh, she shook her head as she threw the newspaper at Trillo who promptly ate it. She stared at the paper disappearing into the fur. Seriously, where was the mouth. Or did it not matter where the food and water entered them? Did they even need to eat? compared to her she only saw them eat occasionally. Not to mention since they could grow their own food almost Ex Nihlio, it seemed like eating was a hobby, not an essential to them. She sighed. She really needed to get some Kaiju expert. Or study Kaijuism or whatever it was called. Unfortunately, she was still on the run. Call her paranoid but she didn't think that people stopped searching for her and the Kaiju with her. With that in mind she brushed her hands off.

"Guess we're moving o-"

THe explosions made Trillo jump into Gaius while Lea almost fell down. Her head snapped towards the distance, seeing smoke rise up. She bit her lip at the sight.

She really should just move on with the boys. Just ignore that explosion. None of her business. The military could handle itself. And even if not, she was a civilian. Not her area of expertise.

"Damn it!"

Minutes later, she still hated herself for not being a bigger asshole.

She never expected to cross off 'spy on a government encampment' on her bucket list but here she was. The other thing she never hoped to cross off her list is 'see a Kausen in the metal'. Because that was exactly what she was seeing. Burning vehicles, smashed soldiers, all as a group of four aliens seemed to raid the base for anything that seemed valuable, nailed down or not. With her lying on Trillo and Gaisu lying down on her she felt relatively safe. all things considered, even as that stuff was going on. Contrary to belief they were quite stealthy like that because Gaius could change color like a chameleon.

They really had to sit down and try to narrow down what he could and couldn't do instead of goofing around and running away. Trillo and Gaius let out their respective chirp and grumble. Lea nodded. Okay, memo noted, good. Now for the current situation... She hissed. Seriously, what were the odds that not even two days later, she'd meet number two of humanity's enemies?! She grit her teeth. Now that she saw what was happening, there was no way she could sit back and do nothing. Even if there weren't any survivors, letting one of humanity's enemies get any sort of advantage didn't sit right with her. Walking back a bit to hide from their gazes, she hid into a nearby cave. Then she put her palm on Gaius' head, giving him a conflicted look.

"Gaius, I know it's a lot to ask for, but can you help those guys out?"

Gaius grumbled in response, causing her to smile wryly.

///

The scouting squad was not in the best of moods. Sure, they found some decent loot given they were out in the boonies, but that didn't mean much. Nothing of importance was here. At best this was an outpost. At worst, some government leftover. At least they had some target practice with the meatbags on the ground but other than that, it was not exactly the best loadout.

It was then, as one of them yawned and rolled his shoulders, that a shadow loomed over them. The yawning Gausen blinked and looked up with a frown.

"Why is it getting da-"

That were his last words before his head and body got smashed in by a massive black furball doing a superhero landing on him. To the Gausens' credit they immediately opened fire on the beast. If it was bothered by their attacks however, it only showed a grumble as it rushed towards them, with its arms wide. Easy to avoid as two of them leapt out of the way, but then the beast suddenly rolled over the ground, increasing speed and landing on top of the third. Immediately it smashed down its face with wide, furious swings. Standing up, it then rushed towards them again like a savage beast. The last two of them kept their fire up as they kept their distance, but only grew more and more frustrated. What was its fur made off?! There was no way this backwater planet had creatures that could tank so many rounds!

And yet it stood tall. Angered by its continuing survival one of them didn't notice the earth giving in, with roots grabbing his leg. His eyes only widened before a wide sideways swing took his head off. The last remaining Gausen grit his teeth and pulled out a blade. Savage or not, the raw power that thing possessed was too dangerous. With that in mind he closed the distance. No way he was going to keep running away from a simple monster!

Ducking underneath its swing, he cut at it. And the Gausen grinned at the pained whine it let out.

"Hahaha, I see!" He swung his blade again and cut through the fur once more, causing green fluids to drip out of it."You don't like sharp things, hmmmm?!"

///

It was going so well at the start. Surprise attack after surprise attack, Gaius whittled down the numbers of the aliens to nothing. But the last one standing was made of different stuff, as he skillfully danced around Gaius while cutting him up like a turkey on Thanksgiving.

"Oh son of a banana."

The realization hit her hard as she saw the massive fluff ball get attacked by a much smaller opponent. She reviewed her memories, double checked it with what she saw and came to one simple conclusion she should've realized way earlier.

Gaius had no damn idea how to fight, did he? Flailing his arms around with as much force as he could, blindly running after an opponent. Heck, didn't he just stumble too?! And there was literally nothing she could do about it. A newbie couldn't suddenly learn how to fight midbattle. It took experience, experience they didn't have time for. She bit her thumb. She could feel his pain. His panic at getting hurt. But what could she do now?! It was then she felt a light tackle to her back. She turned around, seeing Trillo jump up and down.

Family. Together.

Her eyes widened. Wait, they could do that? Since when?! She grinned. Well then, if that was how it was going to work-

Uncertain.

Her smirk immediately vanished. Okay, she could have done without the 'maybe' added to the plan. With a sigh, she cracked her neck.

"...Alright, why the heck not?" Punching her palm she barred her teeth with wild energy."Let's do this, Trillo, Gaius!"

She paused as she heard Gaius grumble in the distance, being cut once more.

"...How do we do-"

Before she could finish her words, Trillo smashed against her head and buried it inside him. Then things got... trippy.

///

Despite being a warrior of the Free Brothers, he had to admit, in terms of toughness, this thing was ranking really high in his eyes. Not to mention the raw destructive force. He felt a shiver down his core when he ducked underneath another sloppy haymaker only for it to punch out a piece of the mountain behind him. Still, all that power was meaningless if it couldn't hit. Sure, those roots would be an issue if he got caught, but they moved predictable. He laughed a bit as he saw it being exhausted, if the way its fur body moved was anything like heaving for air. His victory was imminent, he could feel it! With that in mind he rushed forward once morem, intent on impaling the beast.

But then things suddenly changed.

Instead of clumsily trying to avoid his attack or bring up its arms, it just took the attack. A low grumble escaped it and the Kausen realized his mistake.

He couldn't get his blade out.

"What the-"

"My turn, xenos scum!"

Sadly nobody heard her cool one liner, but whatever, it was time to beat some metal alien butt! Within the body of Gaius, three minds were one as they raised their arms, hands intertwined before rammed down as a hammer. Unfortunately the alien was smart enough to let go of his blade, leaving it stuck inside Gaius. Mentally, Lea clicked her tongue. Damn it, she winded up too much. More efficient movenets, get all the speed out she could get. With that in mind, she raised Gaius' arms in a boxing stance and started to bounce off the ground. The earth vibrated with each jump but she didn't care as she kept her eyes on it. The alien stared at her warily, trying to circle around her. With a grin, she threw out a jab. It was still slow, but way faster than before. she felt some of its metal face crack as it brushed it. He snarled and began to shoot at what he assumed was a face, but it was meaningless. United like this, Lea realized that Gaius and Trillo didn't need to see with a face. Every hair on their body served as a sense to see in that sense, as some weird energy suffused them. Maybe her avatar of nature theory was true? Either way, she threw out her jabs, trying to keep hitting the alien. But nothing really stuck, making her grow more frustrated.

Dang it, she underestimated how damn sluggish Gaius moved! Despite being united like this, she felt the disconnect. It was like a lag when one tried to play a video game with someone across the world in a cave! She wished she could throw kicks or the like, but that was impossible for now. Memo for later, make Gaius stretch more and work on this mind melding thing! At least now they were at a stalemate but it wouldn't last. Then an idea struck Lea. She conveyed it to her friends and they agreed, trusting her combat senses.

In the real world, the alien saw an opening. Most likely aggravated at not landing a proper hit, it reatred back its right arm for a straight. It would surely be its most powerful attack. Thus, it would leave it the most open. Jumping into the jaw of the beast, he let the attack break his shoulder. Letting out a warrior's roar, he sacrificed his arm to get his weapon back and finish the job. Ripping his weapon out, he relished its pain as it bled, but that joy was short lived as something slammed from behind, almost breaking his internals. With wide eyes, he realized he got baited.

Trapped with the right arm, Lea let out a laugh despite the pain.

"Gotcha~!"

She and Gaius threw the alien up and wrapped Gaius' arms around the alien's hips. He frantically began to ram down his blade agan and again, drawing more and more blood. But it didn't matter. The trees formed and twisted underneath him, glowing with energy and sparkling as if they were made out of crystal. Gaius body leaned back, far back. Lea couldn't help herself. She laughed like a maniac before screaming the name of their Finishing Move.

"BEECH BOMB!!!"

Lea, with Gaius' body, slammed the alien's body down the trees. He couldn't even scream as he got impaled and promptly shattered by the raw force behind that wrestling move.

Minutes later, after running away as far as possible, Lea tried to patch up Gaius, back in his blob form. Trillo wiggled, chirping lower than usual. Lea crossed her arms with a pout.

"What, you got a better name idea?"

In response to that, the little fluff ball promptly turned around. The girl smirked. Haha, point to humanity! With that in mind, she rolled her shoulders, still working off that high.

"We gotta work on that link up!" She raised her thumb at them. "Though good work team! Honestly I expected worse side ef-"

That's when she promptly puked all over the poor fluffballs.

The plan is to remove either Bandit or the other as a threat preferably both. Whether or not we do is up in the air. Keep in mind that Galbinus and his men are Law Enforcement that were trying to arrest the Free Brothers before they were forced to come to Earth. So if we can capture either one of them than that's good too. Killing them is a last resort and only if we absolutely must. Pretty sure Galbinus would prefer to take them back to Makean for trial.
Yeah good point.....
Say @Basarin Can we get a list of the Legionnaires?
also what do we have for holding facilities? In terms of Kausen?

First off - very nifty set of omakes!

Second off - I'll come up with a roster of Legionaries and known Free Brothers for you all as an informational segment.

Holding cells…you kinda have one. But that worked mostly due to Zulu being cooperative about it. You may have trouble with an antagonistic Kaus. The Legion's Enclave is probably your first option for prisoners.

Legio Galbinus - Roll Call
Legio Galbinus
The Mekaen military operates under a blend of militia and active duty service. In peacetime, the leaders serve as law enforcement in various capacities, but when mustered become full time officers and leaders. The bulk of the ranks are drawn from 'civilian' mechs, both on a draft and volunteer basis into formations referred to as legions, with the naming scheme referring to its primary leadership. Legio Galbinus, therefore, is an ad hoc legion naturally under the leadership of Galbinus-R. Normally the legion would assemble and serve for the duration of the given emergency - however, Legio Galbinus's situation is fairly unique in Mekaen's history, and there is no clear cut end in sight just yet. The introduction of the human innovation, 'configuration,' is also bound to cause shockwaves through Kausen society upon their return - but that is a worry for the future.

Roster
- Galbinus-R
- Herald
- Patch
- Ocular
- Cavalier
- Architect
- Hotwire
- Hubcap
- Drifter
- Breaker
- Axiom (Tracker, Nailhead, Breakneck)
- Delphi

Free Brothers
Once a peaceful political group advocating for greater compensation for the lower classes of Mekaen, it was swiftly overtaken by an opportunistic and scheming personality known as Tyrannous. With a terrifying blend of charisma, low cunning and raw power, he reforged the Free Brothers movement into his own personal syndicate of criminals, launching attacks and disrupting Kausen society for seemingly sheer greed and pettiness. Even displaced to an alien planet of backwards organic life, Tyrannous has shown no signs of stopping his behavior and in fact has increased his efforts. Time will only tell what his ultimate goal beyond greed and hubris is...

Roster
- Tyrannous
- Rangefinder
- Bandit
- Scrapheap
- Hammerforge (offlined)
- Cinder
- Crackdown
- Additional ranks unconfirmed
- Chimaera

They are on the Oracle of Gasparton... mentioned as possible support units.
Drifter is a veteran of many battles who has gotten kind of crazy
Breaker used to be a salvager and now he has some corrosive gas

- I've had a promotion at work this year. The promotion came with the schedule concocted from the bowels of hell itself. Long story short, I've barely had time to breathe, let alone thinking of logging onto SV.
As seriously as I can say it, congratulations and condolences.

but being half asian was just too much prime bullying material for the damn people here in Germany. At least she won the fight, even if one versus three was a bit tough.
... Thus perpetuating a wrongful stereotype that all Asians know Kung-Fu.

It was then that she came to a sudden stop as the hair on her neck stood straight. She felt it occasionally and most people would call it her imagination, but she trusted that phenomena, that instinct, by now. When it triggered, something was off.
So she is half-Asian, but the other half is a spider?

As a dye? I don't remember them being very colour-y. Cherries, carrots, or even potatoes cause much more discoloration, I think.

MS Paint rendition of what I imagine Gaius/Trillo to kinda look like.
This is more or less exactly how I imagined them from reading the text. Except without the arms.

Highway Robbery - Rounds 1-3 Rolls
[X] Plan Stacked Deck
-[X] Setting the Bait
--[X] Callaghan and Beowolf is to engage the drones to draw out Bandit
---[X] Callaghan's re-rolls should be used on failed defensive rolls (IE dodging or k-scale mesh)
--[X] Use of Timberwolf Formation is authorized, Callaghan can decide when to deploy it.
--[X] Prioritize taking down Bandit's drones, although use the Timberwolf's Heavy Weapons on either Bandit or Scrapheap as applicable.
--[X] Make sure to taunt and goad Bandit to ensure he is focused on Beowolf and thus at as much of a disadvantage as possible when the support arrives.
-[X] Springing the Trap
--[X] Once Bandit is utterly focused on Beowolf and the support is in position, spring the trap and bring in all support at once.
--[X] Callaghan should switch to the Foxhound formation and start using his re-rolls on attacks to ensure as much damage is dealt as possible.
--[X] At this point, Bandit is the number one priority for Callaghan, the First Experimental Support Wing, the Pegasus, and Ocular
--[X] Cavalier should focus on Scrapheap to keep Scrapheap from preventing Bandit's capture or death
--[X] The Ninth Armored Reconnaissance 'Hoplites' are to take down any remaining drones or to attack Scrapheap if there are no more drones.

Beowulf rolls for Agile!
Rolls: 1, 4.
Beowulf dodges. However, presence of the other Drone Mob allows it to launch another Strike at Disadvantage!
Rolls: 6.
Ocular forces a re-roll with Scramble Communications.

Fails, but Callaghan is feeling the pressure build.

Callaghan decides he's done his part in playing as the decoy! "Pegasus, send everyone if you haven't already!"
Pegasus launches a single charge Energy Blaster to Callaghan as it also dispatches the Sheperd for Steel Combination. (I realize from the last time I wrote this we didn't include the Energy Blaster by default, so you get this as one Action before I burn the other on combining)

Rolls: 5, 1, 4.
Success! 4 HP inflicted!
Timberwolf follows up with Strikes!
Rolls: 1, 6.

Sadly not this time.

Round Three concludes.

Free Brothers reinforcements arrive! Scrapheap, 2x Drone Mobs!
DFRI reinforcements arrive! Cavalier, V-33s of the First Experimental Wing, Ninth Armored Reconaissance Hoplites, Pegasus!

Phew! This took me a long time to type and roll out - mostly from being out of practice, mostly because I kept getting interrupted this week from doing this all in one go like I normally do. I probably missed out on a few things, but I'll include the full stats and wrapup in the narrative post. Hope you enjoyed!

EDIT: I forgot that the TImberwolf benefits from Super Tough. I may edit this in the future, but you were able to ignore 2 HP of damage.

looking forward to the write up when ever it shows up. looks like it was something of a lot of near misses and our boy not getting any good licks in.

Seems our Quality is being challenged on two fronts: The Free Bother's own, fiddly Quality and their seemingly endless hordes of mooks.

Maybe we should invest in better regular AI to make up for that second point.

I hope to have the write up finished tomorrow. (hurray sleep!)

Also, your guys are one of the few who are engaging the Free Brothers that aren't the Legion with anything resembling parity. And what classic bad guy faction wouldn't have hordes of mooks?

Well, we saw how Ichirou handled Westphalian units by his lonesome and by any measure hes an exceptionally inexperienced Kaus.

The Free Brothers and Legio Galbinus likely wouldve made short work of The Beast, and I'd be unsurprised if they could take down a Kaiju as well with focused effort on either of their parts.

So yeah, barring other Super robots I dont see any other factions doing half as well as we do against the Free Brothers when we go after them. It's a rather unfair tech and experience disparity

So, my analysis is:
1. I underestimated how strong Bandit's mooks would be.
2. Taking damage on core units when uncombined is quite bad, since that damage fully carries over to combined forms

I think we should start having our super robots combine as soon as the battle starts

@Basarin how does damage translate when a combined unit separates. My assumption is that it works as follows:
1. Damage taken while combined applies to the addon unit first (IE to the SV-10 Shepard when in timberwolf formation), and only when the combined unit has taken more damage than the health added by combining does it start applying to the core unit.
2. Damage taken by the core unit before combining stays on the core unit after it separates.

If the above is correct, what happens if the timberwolf combination takes 14 points of damage and then separates? Would the Shepard essentially fall apart because it wouldn't have any hp left?

Looking at the numbers I think Beowulf should have more HP than what's listed.

Damage reduced! Beowulf sustains 3 HP damage, 15/18 remaining! Spiked tires really sting
Fails! K-Scale Mesh has already been expended this turn, Beowulf sustains 4 HP of damage, 10/18 remaining!

So Beowulf should have been at 11/18 and then 25/32 after combining. Not seeing any other errors so Timberwolf should be at 20/32 instead of 19/32. It may not be a big difference but every bit counts at this point.

I can do math I swear.

I've never actually considered that, but it does make sense. The Shepherd pack does provide an extra +14, so by logical extension it would make sense to have the whole thing start suffering some catastrophic consequences.

I might not apply it to this fight, but maybe in future. Maybe start rolling to either try to maintain the form with consequences or force an emergency eject, that sort of thing. Food for thought!

Deployment #4 - Botched the Landing
0940, 24 July A.D. 2072
Engagement Zone

My everything hurts right now.

Those were Richard's thoughts as he was sent bouncing along the arid ground, the unpleasant realization that what goes around eventually comes around. The Beowulf's head unit violently shook its head, matching its pilot's mental state, as it wearily got to its feet, audio receptors already picking up on the horde of stomping metal feet charging across the broken terrain. All charging straight for him.

How the hell did this happen?

Oh, right.

0930, 24 July A.D. 2072
Engagement Zone

From a nearby cliff face, Richard had found the drones first. No sign of Bandit just yet, but Richard had made himself very visible by kicking up miniature dust storms up and down the roads. He didn't exactly hide what he was doing either - no camouflage, no stealth, nothing of the sort. He was effectively waving a giant flag saying, "Totally not a trap, Beowulf is here."

The Drones had at least come looking for him. And they matched Cavalier's descriptions fairly well - their own Configured forms looked vaguely like dune buggies. But every little detail about it screamed 'not made on Earth.' The dull reds and mustard yellow highlights, the strange angles and curves on the outer structures, and the glowing energy visible from the weapons ports. It was all very science-fiction. They weren't even hiding the fact that they were of Kausen-make - some of them were in full mecha modes, with the lead Drones setting the pace by walking slowly, a heavy looking piece of what looked like industrial equipment cradled in its arms. It looked a bit like a mining drill, but where the sharpened tip would be was instead an open port, glowing a soft blue.

Round One

Still in the vehicle mode, Richard revved his engines slightly, waiting for the two mobs of Drones to move just a little further...just a bit further...

Now!

It was only when he made the dramatic aerial leap off of the cliff face he was perched on did he realize that random chance decided to piss in his cereal. One of the lead Drones somehow stumbled, and accidentally dropped the improvised weapon. It then knelt down, about to pick up the machinery.

The Beowulf sailed just above its head.

The Drones seemed to immediately scatter, even as a localized dust storm roared around the Beowulf as it skidded and spun about in a wide arc. "This is fine, this is fine!" Richard growled as the MMI immediately translated his thoughts to action. Still charging forward, he immediately began to Configure while still in motion - the moment that his legs began to fully unfurl, he used the momentum to leap into the nearest mob of Drones. The first one that had inadvertently spoiled his attack was already scooting backwards, its precious cargo in its arms-

-only for it to stumble again, falling onto its back. And saving it from the wide swing of the Beowulf's fist.

"Oh come on!"

<ERROR: LOCALE UNKNOWN>

"...are you absolutely certain this is the human mech that gave you so much...trouble?" Scrapheap asked slowly as he observed the realtime feeds. A clawed hand readjusted the monocle-optic, clicking sounds echoing on the dropship's bridge as he tried to see if his optic was fooling him.

Surely...surely the human machinery that nearly forced him to reconstruct Bandit's internal infrastructure couldn't be this bad at combat, could it?

"Uh...yes?"

Scrapheap remained silent as a follow on attack from the - he double checked his records, ah, yes - the Beowulf launched into what was admittedly an elegant sweep kick miss again. In response, the lead Drone readied the improvised mining blaster, the drill spinning fiercely as the focusing lens began to collect power.

Bandit just placed a hand over his face plate as the crystal then abruptly shut down, the earlier stumble having caused something to go out of alignment.

Scrapheap remained silent as he watched the Drones coalesce around the Beowulf, watching what was less of an epic struggle and more of a failed bar brawl in a satellite down-district pub brawl. The human war machine was surprisingly agile - one would almost mistake it for a Kaus if it weren't for the fact they had confirmation there was a human piloting it - but the incompetents attempting to mob him might as well have been consuming junkyard-fabricated shards.

The Beowulf was a flurry of action. Not that it was able to inflict anything, but he was beginning to really appreciate Cavalier's descriptions of the Free Brothers' preferred tactic of siccing giant mobs of henchmen - henchmechs? - at the Legion. For every punch he weaved out of the way from, there was another Drone waiting to body tackle him. As he leapt over that one, another was raising a handheld blaster. As he grabbed its arm and judo-threw it over his shoulder into several of its charging fellows for not much damage that he could tell, there was-

The MMI immediately shut off one of the radio channels as shrieking static pierced through it. Richard blinked mid-motion, then watched as some of the Drones that were coming at an angle he hadn't been paying attention to were clutching their heads. Richard leapt backwards, trying to get some distance from the mob, then looked up at the sky as a certain spydrone wagged its wings towards him. "Thanks, Ocular," he muttered, the Beowulf sketching a quick wave at the Legionnaire.

Round Two

"Okay, let's...just...not mention this happened," he muttered, readying himself for the next phase of the fight-

-only to find himself diving out of the way as an enormous blast of energy consumed the ground he was just standing on.

"You're making me look bad!"
Bandit screeched as he tore through the terrain. His larger, boxier Configuration form was still hell on wheels, no matter what any of the others thought. And the soon-to-be-trusty Mk. II blaster was spewing overcharged energy blasts, leaving glass crater after glass crater with each volley. Nevermind the fact that the damned Beowulf was already Configuring to get out of the way, practically tipping on one side to avoid his blasts on some of his turns. Nevermind the fact that the weapon was already trying to feed him warning signals that he blithely ignored.

Even when it was losing, the Beowulf was making him look bad!

"Don't think you needed help with that!"
the pilot shot back, drifting to the side as he narrowly avoided another shot. "How about we just-?"

Bandit never learned what he would have suggested, and he didn't care. Right as the Beowulf made a specific turn, Bandit triggered the overcharge in his engines, and shot forward.

He was rewarded with the satisfying crunch of his larger frame colliding with the Beowulf's, the spiked protruding from the tires grinding into the softer frame as gravity and momentum provided the force required to slam into the damned thing. Bits of armor plating and other scrap scattered through the air like a glass shower, and for a fleeting moment, Bandit had the satisfaction of returning the cheap shot the Beowulf gave him right before he could offline Cavalier. Even as he Configured mid-air, his arm-mounted heat knife scraping just a little bit extra and claiming his serving of metal across the hood, he allowed himself that seldom-felt processing flow of satisfaction.

Then time resumed its flow, and both machines scattered in opposite directions, Bandit tumbling in mech mode as he hadn't quite thought through his motions.

Worth it.

Right, that was how it happened. Ow.

This...wasn't encouraging.

"Well, we knew that Kausen tech was still leagues ahead of us," Sam mentions grimly as he watched the live feed. Diana's avatar, streaming in between both the facility and the Pegasus, hovered nearby on your desk as you and Sam watched the Beowulf begin to legitimately struggle. You'd gotten used to Callaghan being able to, well, succeed at just about everything you threw him and the Beowulf at.

But even the mooks of the Free Brothers were beginning to prove their weight in numbers, if not quality. Even as you can see Ocular sweeping down, already shifted into his more bird-like form to spoil one of the Drones' attacks, more and more of Callaghan's motions were slowly being caught up to by the faceless hordes. It was strange to see them look so similar to Zulu, albeit of a different color scheme - maybe a different manufacturing line? - but that was neither here nor there-

A piercing blue light tore through the air, catching the Beowulf midair as it was dodging out of the way of another Drone's attacks, and you wince as the energy shaves off more than a bit off of the Beowulf's back. It was to Callaghan's credit that even now, as the Drone mobs were trying to capitalize on the seeming weakness, he was still rolling with the punches. Blocking blows where he couldn't dodge, and still managing to get to his feet despite the press of bodies attempting to weigh him down.

"Sam, make a note," you mention calmly. "Need more options for crowd control, and we need to look into a general upgrade across the board."

"Ahead of you already, chief."

"Diana, send the Shepherd out. I think we have their undivided attention now."

"Understood, sir. Permission to fully engage?"

"Go."

"STEEL FORMATION!"

Bandit took a step back as that damnable truck plowed through the terrain, an oddly familiar-looking piece of equipment already being launched from its ready-rack. He stepped out of the way as a now very familiar blast of energy tore through the first mob, sending bits of them flying in pieces. Brushing aside bits of processor and internal fluids that splattered across his frame, he watched with dread fascination as he saw it again.

The Beowulf, cut up and blast-ridden as it was, still launched itself high into the air, razor-thin wires connecting to the frame as it folded up into a chest unit. The truck's own jumpjets boosted it upwards, unfolding itself into the larger humanoid form. The Beowulf slotted itself somewhat roughly into the chest cavity, and large, massive hands unfolded and clenched into fists as the new head unit emerged from the top.

There it is then.

Round Three

Bandit twisted his head, easing up some of the servo tension in his neck. "Alright, big ugly," he growled, the Mk. II humming strangely in his arms. "Let's try this again!"

"Funny, that's my line," the human responded harshly. Even as damaged as it was, gaining a size and mass-up would do wonders to any sentient's self confidence. It slammed one hand into an open palm, the echoing sound resembling a gun platform recoil. "Let's go!"

If there was one thing that Richard was beginning to appreciate from this fight, it was that Bandit was just as ticked off with Richard as Richard was beginning to with Bandit.

The Drones had all been wearing away at him slowly, but gradually. There were more amber alerts beginning to blare at the corner of his HUD, even as his attention was begin split between Bandit and his goons. The Free Brother's fancy new equipment wasn't working apparently - it did something and fizzled in his arms, forcing him to resolve to his fists and the knife once again, but at least Richard knew it was coming unlike the first time they tangled. But he was constantly throwing off - literally in some cases - the hordes of Drones that were punching, kicking, stabbing, and shooting at him. From his vantage point, it all felt like really annoying and slightly harmful rain.

He really hoped the others were already on their way, if they hadn't already started leaving. Richard could feel arid air draftily passing through some holes in his - the Timberwolf's - leg, and some cables were becoming dangerously exposed even through the worn but still hardy K-Scale Mesh that had stubbornly clung tightly around it. But until then...

"Demolisher Array!" The weapon ports on his shoulders opened up, revealing the Energy Blasters already pooling energy and ready to go. "Fire!"

A moment later, what felt like a shotgun blast of raw energy slammed into the Drone Mob that had just jumped him, and he had the gratifying feeling of seeing most of them simply fly off into the distance, tumbling heads and tails over themselves as some were simply buried into the terrain. One's legs simply waved about, as if it were trying to run from its predicament, while others' parts simply disintegrated, with blue and pink flames from their cores sputtering into nothingness and visors going abruptly dark.

"Not bad, human." The Timberwolf's battered head turned to see Bandit, his malfunctioning weapon slung over his back. But a smug grin was plastered all across his face plate. "If I tried this by myself? I'd probably be scrapped. But you see..." Richard didn't need the sensors to feel more of the Drones begin to surround him. He certainly didn't need them to notice the strange industrial lasers already being primed. "...I brought friends," he bragged.

"And you are quite bereft of your own besides from an annoying pest," another voice spoke from behind him. Now Richard turned around - why did that mech have a British accent? The Kaus in question looked literally cobbled together, a crane arm hanging loosely over his shoulder. But the strange claw and implements on his arm brought to mind a Patch who'd really let himself go.

Ocular landed onto the Timberwolf's shoulder, and his strange chittering noises, seemingly chided the Free Brother medic.

"Oh?" Scrapheap - that was the name - tilted his head, his one single optic glowing an ice blue in the morning air. "You and what formation?"

"How about me to start with!?" Before any of the Drones could react, another Jackal slammed into the nearly depleted Drone mobs. In a dark navy blue color, the vehicle would have been out of place in any actual Defense Force formation - but here, he was right where he should have been. The nearby Drones barely had time to react before a flurry of fists slammed into their face plates, leaving them with cracked and flickering visors as they tumbled onto the sand below.

"You took your damned time!" Richard grumbled as he saw Cavalier slam two additional Drones together, sending them tumbling into an offline state.

"Ehh, your guys were going too slowly, so figured I'd show up early," Cavalier said. Turning, he gave a cheerful wave to Bandit, a smirk on his face widening by the second. "By the way, we brought friends too!"

"You what-!?"

That's when he heard it. The Phalanxes of the Ninth rolled over the hill, in their loose block formations, practically gliding in an impractical and bulky sort of way across the terrain. The Pegasus soon emerged from a nearby cloudbank, already flanked by the V-33s of the First Wing. And as Bandit's face deepened into a scowl, Cavalier's own smirk widened until Richard was certain the metal was going to crack. "Revenge is sweet, you manufacturing defect."

Well I'd say the trap work but our combat rolls for this was poor. Let's hope we get some better ones and not let Bandit slip away here.
