Super Robot Quest

Kausen Problem Solving
Solarians = designated Kausen descriptor for dominant indigenous lifeforms of Sol III.

Designation = somewhat incorrect. Native designation, 'Human,' 'homo sapiens,' descendant of primitive bipedal lifeforms. Achieved sapience and mastery of basic tools.

Technological prowess = formidable. Escalation from hunter-gatherer societies to industrialized warfare within a short time period.

Unity = divided. Human history dominated by competition and drive to succeed when others fail. Need to assert dominance over others = not dissimilar to Kausen competitive drives. Unity achieved only forty cycles previously, but remain divided due to dissatisfied and violent movements (ref. 'Westphalia').

Unit Designation = ZCUY3954_1.

Affiliation: Movement of the Free Brothers Defense Force Research Institute.

Current Designation: 'Zulu'.

Assigned Project: Assist Dr. Maximiliane with Kaus-based technology, 'Dispersion Field.'

Status: ADEQUATE.

"Zulu!"

The drone looked up, its featureless faceplate save for its dull green optics glowing slightly as it heard its name. The relatively diminutive form of Dr. Brand (correction: preferred designation is 'Max') was just staring at the standard setup Zulu had established. "What...what is this," she demanded.

Zulu's optics dulled for a moment before flaring up again. "Maintenance protocols for the Dispersion Field, Max," Zulu replied, its voice a clipped and steady electronic monotone. "Due to-"

"No, no, not that!" Zulu had difficulty discerning human facial responses, but this was...aggravation? Annoyance? Undetermined at this time. Will save recording and cross-reference for future clarification. "It's stable," she said.

"Correct."

"It doesn't normally do that."

"Also correct. What is your query, Max?"

"How?"

Clarification achieved. Exasperation due to unfamiliarity with Dispersion Field mechanics. Understandable.
"Dispersion Field stabilization achieved by minute application of energy shards," Zulu explained. It gestured vaguely at the disassembled Dispersion projector, all connected by wires and energy feeds to the unstable contraption that Max had assembled months ago.

And the Dispersion Field was not flickering quite so much as it was from the recordings observed. It was, in fact, holding rather steady. "This unit was responsible for conducting after-battle maintenance of Free Brother technology," it explained also. "Drone life span in Free Brothers...inadequate. Violent. Short. More so if above-average intellect is detected. However, if focused on cleaning, maintenance, reassembly - vital, lowly functions below status of full Kaus - chance of disintegration or termination is unlikely."

"...okay, I'll buy it," Max opted to say.

Zulu tilted its head. "Zulu does not comprehend. No transaction was-"

"Human saying, you'll get used to it." Cutting off Zulu without letting it finish, she pointed at the Dispersion Field. "Alright, you can get it steady," she accepted. "I want a written report from you on how you achieved it. But that can come later!" A strange facial expression crossed her face. Facial expression...smile. Also known as 'grin.' Added modifier: 'manic.' "What else can we do with it besides as a shield?"

Zulu again tilted its head. Functions aside from damage reduction and protection...not considered previously. "One moment. Calculating..." Zulu processed over it for a few moments, before looking up. "Original function of one-time protective field - still viable. Potential via energy shard disposable batteries to utilize charges. Protection - still an option. Possibility to restrain enemy formations...unknown." It tilted its head again to regard Max. "But this unit is intrigued by the idea."

"Excellent." The 'grin' only grew on her face. "Come, Zulu! Let us conduct science!"

"Affirmative. Unit shall conduct inquiry. For Science."
SCIENCE!

"You! Go back to Carlson's side of the labs!"

You are Major John Devin, and you are terrified.

Terrified because Max - with assistance from Zulu - has managed to weaponize the DIspersion Field.

The Dispersion Projector is now complete. Utilizing a mixture of energy shard batteries that serve to both stabilize the Dispersion Field, the trade-off for the level of control was that the projector - a bulky, mecha-sized thing that could be installed inside of the chest unit or a Combine support unit - was that it was still not perfect. It was guaranteed one shot of the Dispersion Field, and could work to either protect the mecha or literally box in whoever they were fighting. The enemy would be utterly restrained, but the mechanism would serve as a tactical restraint at best.

The downside: After the first shot, you can reasonably expect to get a second shot, but it was a crapshoot if you got a third before the shard batteries would begin to short out. But the point remains: Zulu knows quite a bit about Kausen technology. Even Galbinus was taken aback by this development.

Max is bad enough on her best days when she tries to decrypt Free Brothers' technology. Now she has Zulu to bounce ideas off of along with Sam. What they build is undeniably effective, but...oh dear.

Dispersion Projector created! Stats will be posted in Events post!

Hrm.

Looks like it's time to see about reproducing that acid laser after all.

Or at least developing a relevant Napalm equivalent.

Also. Wow. This makes that melee variant I was coming up with rather disgusting.

Hell yeah.

Now, my immediate follow-up question is: what happens if we plug a Spark Caliber into it, as opposed to the Energy Shard batteries?

And/or, development of replacing/swapping out batteries on the fly to give it extended combat life, in lieu of/prior to upgrading/streamline the hardware itself for greater efficiency?

nit Designation = ZCUY3954_1.

Gotta remember that number perfectly, just in case.

You sell yourself short.

Not surprising.

But luckily Drones found a loophole to survive.
It still doesn't save them from sorties though.

"You! Go back to Carlson's side of the labs!"

Darn these science ninjas!

Achievement unlocked: A literally faceless mook surprised one major commander unit.

And now he's even more OP.

@Basarin I have a few questions regarding Zulu.

1. Does Bastion know that one of the Drones lost on that mission was one of the ones that he was using for his work on his experimental tech?

2. If so would he want to get Zulu back if he knew that we had captured Zulu intact and are busy convincing him to defect to our side?

3. Will Galbinus insist on questioning Zulu on what else he might know about what Bastion and the other technicians on the Free Brothers warship were working on

1. Does Bastion know that one of the Drones lost on that mission was one of the ones that he was using for his work on his experimental tech?

You're thinking Bandit. And the answer would be no. Bandit doesn't really pay attention to the 'little mechs.'

2. If so would he want to get Zulu back if he knew that we had captured Zulu intact and are busy convincing him to defect to our side?

Again, no. He's arrogant enough to think it didn't matter. And if he sees evidence of Dispersion Field, he'll assume the Legion helped you.

3. Will Galbinus insist on questioning Zulu on what else he might know about what Bastion Bandit and the other technicians on the Free Brothers warship were working on

He might. Galbinus and most Kaus don't expect much out of Drone mechs, so the fact that this one has this much initiative is unusual.

Future plot twist: Zulu's actually a lobotomite.

To be fair, he's literally a mass-produced drone made with inferior parts compared to the regular Kausen and treated as such. Even the not-Autobots don't consider them "real people".
What I wonder is if a particularly wise not-Vehicon can be elevated to full Kausen status.

Our insane mad scientists still have ethics.

As far as we know...

Max is fully on the "I will show them! I will show them all!!!" train, it's just that when George Sheol says that he means that he is going to build giant Kaiju monsters and kill people, because once they are all dead it means he won the argument? Max, by contrast, seeks to show them up by revolutionizing their fields and not only prove them wrong, but also to make them obsolete by upending their basis of knowledge.

It's a very petty sort of an academic revenge, one that doesn't leave a body count and lets you live a happy life afterwards.

Do you think Sheol wasn't like that at first? Or Dr. Wily? Or even Dr. Frankenstein? That line is standard mad scientist reasoning. Whether they go crazy evil depends if they get contact (and funds) from people around them or not.

Your particular brands of mad scientists are much more restrained and well adjusted on the basis that they have an active support base to push along their projects. More importantly, you have the ability to control where their madness goes, rather than them simply going into a frenzy of experimentation that ultimately goes horribly wrong.

Sheol pretty much didn't. And much like any mad scientists who were spurned, that drive to prove himself superior by virtue of being the last sapient being alive seems completely like a rational and appropriate response that's not at all insane.

Or maybe, let them indulge in their insanity fantasies.

I know. Counterproductive.
It's the "stop them before they cross any lines" part that's hard.

CR-10 Seeker
So, fair warning. The next week and a half or so is going to be fairly busy, so my posting schedule is going to be really wonky. I'll be able to sneak some in here and there, but this next bit is fairly important for my job, so I have to prioritize sadly.

That said, Daniel Khana has once again come through for art. The image is a bit more main character/named character-ish than I anticipated (though admittedly I did ask him to make it a mixture of Yuusha/Brave and Transformers, so that's on me; that said I like the image too much to ask for changes), but if you want to slot an AI into a Seeker frame, this would be the one to do it.

So I present the Seeker.

Awesome work. they look amazing and will be a big help to everyone. Huh! Now I kind of want one of the AI to have this form. Heh I think I know which one deserves this form.

Naw, the trick is to constantly bribe them and threaten them by suggesting that the bribes would...reduce if they go off the map.
...also important to have multiple of them so they can be busy upstaging each other

Children (and some adults) are squeeing in excitement.

I am having trouble deciding if Charlie or Frankie should have the CR-10 Seeker body. I won't touch deciding if Charlie or Frankie should have the CR-10 Seeker body. I won't touch @veekie's option since its not mine and I am borrowing it since I liked it so much and still do and Veekie didn't want to make 2 more Ai options for the Mechanical men thing. Charlie is the leader of the 3 siblings in my list while Frankie is the Techie of the siblings. My problem is that I am having a hard time seeing either one of them using the CR-10 frame.

Here is a link to my option list. Veekies is at the bottom of the list. Super Robot Quest - Original - Sci-Fi | Page 179

OMG those are amazing.
