Super Robot Quest

'Zulu' - I've kept this one under wraps, but I've read your reports on this one. Aside from the...interesting start you and the Intelligence Services had in interrogating him, keep at this one. Showing we've turned one of the enemy Kaus will be more outside pressure we can ward off of our offices.

Lel, Peters knows everything.

Negotiations with the Regency of Varulne - Personally, I agree with you about taking your time in negotiating with that thing. We've ensured Galbinus and his mob stay on our side; we have nothing to compel the Regent to do the same. As soon as you have determined what it wants and what it will give, contact me.

Poor thing never watched many magical girl shows.

And yes, Ms. Smith, if you're hearing this, we want to keep you on our side.

Not even pretending anymore.

es, I bloody well know you forensically confirmed his death. There's such a thing as a 'legacy,' and I don't doubt that some addled numpty in the Westphalian ranks is eager to take up that name again.

For a moment I thought we would find out it was actually a clone.

Pegasus-class - Would you believe I've had inquiries already lining up asking about licensing?
For the record, do not just give it out. Let the envy build up, would you

Yes, let the envy build up as we improve it!

Arc-class Weaponry - Of all the things you could have made, you went with a bloody sword and cannon that spits out lightning. I

Yeah, we could have gone with a flaming sword. Much cooler.
Also, what about the energy gun? No mention about that?

but do your robots need to do quite so much posing? ('The pilots and my exec will claim they're within their rights to do so.' - MAJ Devin)

You cannot have subtle super robots, Ma'am.

You won't get specific funding from me on Force Fielded doors, however. I'll advise you to budget for that on your own.

Do we have these? Speaking of: What about our meager efforts at getting forcefields?

Does the "E" stand for Enhanced?

Refine what you have. I would normally be critiquing you about not quite getting to the second Super Robot team, but given what's happened this year, I am content to call it 'close enough.' I will not hold you to it for now, but see if you can get a third Super Robot in the testing phases by the end of the year.

A reasonable goal.

Stellar Evaluation! You may pick one bonus from below. The chosen bonus will remain active for the following year (Twelve Turns):

Yay, a perfect score bonus!

"Now," Peters concludes, "the not so pleasant part." She stares straight at you. "A certain General Armistead is here on Unity Station. And he wants to meet you."

Oh noes, he's alive! Or a clone.

but unless he's going to secretly turn out to be a westphalian suicide drone ready to self-detonate on confirmation of the target,

That would be against super-robot tactics.

[x] Applied Support - Designate one Action with a Test Roll this turn. It will automatically succeed, but there will be no outstanding effects. This will refresh every other Turn (if used on Turn One, Year Three, this will refresh for Turn Three, Year Three).
+No brainer. Auto-success for Disadvantaged actions is an enormous boon.
[X] At least meet with him. For someone who's known as your biggest critic, you don't know a whole lot about him. And Anna hasn't been able to come up with much. Time to meet the man in the flesh.
-[X] He's going to bluster and complain, what you want to know is why. Fortunately, angry people don't tend to watch what they're saying, especially if they've attributed you to being some kind of puppet for his enemies or something like that. Let him vent, let him complain, and take notes. Because you can't really imagine any legitimate cause for him to be so bloody well furious with you, when he could have leveraged this into being a bloody hero instead. The fact he was unable to adapt to take overall credit suggests he's not actually very good at internal politics, and you've seen that his abilities aren't so great as to have gotten his position on merit alone.
--[X] REMAIN. CALM. Armistead will try to use any sort of outburst in an effort to undermine us. We have results on our side, and we'll stick with them.
---[x] Think about everything he could use against you to prepare a professional counter-argument for each case.
+Adding my own line.

I think that six guaranteed successes outweighs +1RP per month, personally. We have a lot of plates to spin this year in regards to getting three super robot squads online, upgrading Beowulf, developing ESP etc etc and being able to guarantee progress on at least one front every two turns with minimal investment is a promising concept.

What I find weird is that he hasn't done much to work against us. The only thing that makes sense is that he probably expected the Westphallinas raids to weaken/finish us off and then swoop in to take over.

Yeah, the "but there will be no outstanding effects" kills Applied Support for me. Automatically succeeding but being limited to the baseline results could end up missing us some really important breakthroughs in the long term. Or at least cost us more time and resources in order to discover them later if they're not locked out.

Applied support seems like it'd be best for refining a pilot or mech into deployable condition-it won't get us NEW tech, but it'll let us leverage older/more accessible tech.
I could see it translating to increased RP costs if we overdo it, but on the flipside it could also lead to 'untested' ideas that pile up and swing round into increased costs upon deployment.

As for our projects...
Getting a new mech online is probably a major thing we need to do. Between the Persus and the incoming Valkyrie, I'd say either or if not both is a thing to do ASAP-those guys are no-doubt getting itchy and impatient...
Oooh a thought-What if Armistead knows about the Kausen? If he does, and he seems like he might-that could become a problem.

[X] At least meet with him. For someone who's known as your biggest critic, you don't know a whole lot about him. And Anna hasn't been able to come up with much. Time to meet the man in the flesh.
- [X] REMAIN. CALM. Armistead will try to use any sort of outburst in an effort to undermine us. We have results on our side, and we'll stick with them.

An autosuccess doesn't lead to opening up new lines of inquiry though.

We don't need new lines of enquiry all the time however. Especially if we're rush prototyping for a specific event we can't afford to fail, or doing a research at a severe disadvantage(basically any new branches we open up)

The only reason we're even ahead of the curve to the degree that we are has been because of those new lines of inquiry allowing us to leapfrog ahead of the stumbling blocks that would otherwise exist.

Success snowballs so long as it continues to accumulate.

Thanks @Anime_Fan35

There's no question on what tone you guys want to take with Armistead, nor is there any debate over meeting him (you're meeting him, flat out). But it looks like it's in favor of Streamlined Resource Flow.

Vote closed. I'll be typing this up tomorrow.

That was unexpected...

Unity Station

Come into my parlor, says the spider to the fly, you think grimly as you enter the room. Unity Station had millions of these rooms; when you have a constant rotation of ever-changing high ranking personnel going in and out of the station, it becomes a fact of life that a conference room of some kind is going to be required on any given moment. Square room of modest proportions, standard conference table, and the same steel-blue metal sheen to the walls and surfaces, a few pictures of some kind of event of human history.

None of this catches your immediate attention, though.

"Oh, good," the man sitting at the table comments, "I was wondering if you were going to take me up on the invitation."

That guy does.

Respecting the station, if not the man himself, you salute General George Armistead, holding it until he stands up and returns the salute (which at least he's quick about). "It's a little hard to turn down a meeting with a General, Sir," you say.

"Especially one that goes out of his way to antagonize you?" That response is not what you're expecting. Acting on his gesture for you to sit down, he takes his own seat before examining you, giving you the chance to do the same.

Armistead looks to be pushing the older side of fifty years, but there's an intensity to his eyes that denies any weakness to age. His uniform's array of ribbons – what your mentors back in the American Army affectionately referred to as the 'fruit salad' – displays a healthy record of service. He may have been a political appointee, but this was a man who had clearly done his part and then some, with awards for wounds taken in combat, service medals for anti-Westphalian campaigns – the list goes on.

That in itself doesn't really tell you anything, but Armistead's evidently been around the block.

"So." He's already taken the time to study you. Though he stares at you with an intensity that reminds you all too much of a hunter, the only emotion on his face seems to be that of wry amusement, like a grandfather about to lecture a particularly foolish grandson. "I'll be honest, I didn't think your project was going to go anywhere."

"So why the hostility?" you bluntly ask.

"Eh." Armistead shrugs. Catching your eye, he holds up a device -

- and you immediately move to deactivate all of your own devices. You recognize a White Noise Generator when you see one. A moment later, the familiar prickling feeling of nothingness attacking your senses takes hold.

"You ever have to deal with an over-needy field grade officer corps?" Armistead asks, his voice slightly subdued by the White Noise.

"…no?" You honestly were not expecting the conversation to go this way.

"Well, I do." Armistead rolls his eyes. "You'd think it'd be the Navy that's hidebound to tradition, but no. The Air Defense Force, they're feeling the most threatened by what you're doing." You say nothing, so he takes that as his cue to keep talking. "Don't get me wrong. We needed a Super Robot, which is why I gave Louis my support to begin with. But…" Here, his jovial nature fades for a moment. "It's not so simple."

"…but you're in charge of them," you say incredulously. "You…do know what kind of-"

"-reputation I have? Yeah, I do," Armistead grumbles. "Publicly having to lambast you, having to distance myself from Franklin – bless his patience, that man – even publicly rejecting the V-33." Here, his face has a glimmer of amusement. "Heh. That one wasn't too hard to do. I tried it; not a fan. I see why it's good, but I'm not a fan."

Okay. That part you were expecting.

"But understand, it's not so simple for me to speak my mind," he says. "And I still can't, even with this marvel of tech." He slides over a case, a sealed tablet carrier with his seal on it. "So unofficially while this thing still has a few seconds of battery life, I'm going to say that my support of your program isn't a fluke, and that I have a rotten house that needs cleaning out." He stares at you for a moment, and very briefly you see the visage of a man who's exhausted. "Study that on your own time. Bring in your friends in the IS if you'd like. They might find it interesting."

The White Noise Generator sputters, then dies, the background noise prickling at your senses slowly fading away. Without a word, Armistead sketches a wave at you before leaving.

what the hell was that?

Special Action unlocked.

The official record is that General Armistead railed against you and your program.

Unofficially...

You have so many questions.
