Alright, step two.

[ ] Plasma Vents (-Complexity)
[ ] Compressor Rings (+Cruise) [Prototype] [One Success Roll: Speed Increase]

As down as I am to really push the limits on what a nacelle can do, we're already starting to get up there in terms of complexity. And, as @MJ12 Commando states, the more complex we make these, the harder they are to produce, which in turn means more expensive ships, ergo fewer ships To Boldly Go and carry out the missions that Starfleet needs them to do. So, here at least, I'm going to advocate for the Plasma Vents. I'm sure there will be other avenues for us to pursue improvements on that don't cost us as much in the way of complexity.

We're going to be grabbing more prototypes later, so we need to take every -Complexity option we can get.

This allows the engines to run with powered warp plasma at sub-warp energies in the nacelles at all times, as any unexpected external energy inputs can be instantly and harmlessly vented from the nacelles and away from the warp coils.
I feel like hardening against "unexpected external energy inputs" is a pretty important feature. Anything that protects against warp wedgies, even if just a little bit, is worth a bit of slack in the envelope.

This sounds like something we should wait a generation for- let our general experience and tech safety improve a bit first. Only thing I think we'd want to risk it on at the moment is high speed courier ships. For once I'm slowing down the testing- we're not ready yet.

There aren't any trick options, although of course considering edge cases is relevant. I've also clarified the complexity changes of each option.

The prototype's expected delay in going to warp sounds like a major downside in some hairy situations.

For this at least, I think the vents are a better option.

A delay in going to warp is very likely to result in otherwise preventable ship losses.
This prototype option compromises safety by design, and then the proposed solution to that compromises safety on a different front.

Increased cruise is great, but this seems like a poor way to go about it.

Also, -complexity is a Very Good Thing in warp nacelles.
-cost is Also a very good thing when/if that comes up.

I want to go all in on the coils and the field stabilizer, maybe the coolers as well, so I'm voting safe for the others.

Lets not try to make our nacelles so expensive everyship we design goes down an alphabetic rating. We actualy need this nacelle to be practical to use as a replacement to our old ones

I think this proposed feature would be amazing in some kind of specialist design, but terrible for our standard ships. I'd love to come back to this for the next round of utility ships, but I don't want to see it on an exploration vessel. Of course, if they can reduce that charging time even a little, I'd reconsider, but 10-12 seconds is just too much.

Oh, look, cruise speed!

You know, the option I actually want above all else and would accept expense, complexity, and prototype or even experimental rolls for!

...aaaaaand even with a perfect outcome it has unacceptable operational behavior that makes all our ships more vulnerable to damage, less able to handle changing conditions, and approximately one eternity slower to escape hairy situations. Fuckety-mcduckfuck. That sucks. That sucks real hard.

Just to be contrarian.

A delay in going into warp speed is not ideal for any emergency situation. It could be useful for cargo ships that can afford to wait within the safety of the range federation space tho. Maybe we could make two types of nacelle one day, one for work at home, one for high stress.

but realistically speaking it means that a charge time of ten to twelve seconds will be needed to make the transition to warp speeds.
I'm looking towards sticking with the Plasma Vent. 10-12 seconds can be a loooooong time if a ship needs Warp *right then*.

Oh that charge up time is a HARD no from me. Ten to twelve seconds? That's an extra salvo of disrupters you're eating. That's the difference between getting out in time and getting negative space wedgied into a cube. That's the difference between living and dying. Absolutely not.
