Thunderchild-class Dreadnought [2158]
Single Target Rating: 20
Multi-Target Rating: 14

-Average Damage: 14.2
-Max Sustained Damage: 25
-Alpha Strike Damage: 42

lmao, even at a maximum armament investment Copernicus can only barely beat Thunderchild's average damage and still can't match her alpha strike. She may be fully obsolete at this point but god damn she's ferocious.

Going for a cost 4 approach. I think this gives a good balance of coverage and damage, punishes those that want to use maneuverability against us, and with our shields and new hull materials we should have great staying power.

Edit: If I'm a fortune-teller I suspect the final configuration will be what I have above but with a full saucer.

Forward torpedoes fix the frontal damage problem, engineering phasers increase our coverage, add more bite, and to really make sure nobody thinks it's safe to just follow behind us. I can give or take the aft photon launcher honestly, but it wouldn't hurt to have.

I think this is a bad idea, because extra saucer phasers are an infra++ option. We'll get more forward firepower out of the other infra++ option, which is 2 photon torpedo launchers, and I don't think we should take more than one infra++ option. 2 photons is equal to 4 photonics fore, which I think more than compensates for 2 fewer phasers in the bow arc.
I agree the ++ is a bit of a concern, but the saucer upgrade adds 4 phasers to the frontal arc, as in, all the extra phasers are frontal getting you 6 forward phasers on the saucer from 2. I'm not sure how much engineering phasers can or does contribute to forward firing arcs. Still as such if one wanted to only beef up the forward arcs and didn't care much about further improvement of the rear arcs, then it would be the option to go for.

While not very Star Trek-y, I wish we got the option to put some missiles on the ship. They're less effective than torpedoes (no accelerator tube), but a box of missiles on our ships could really up the alpha strike for comparatively minimal investment.

The ventrally mounted engineering section phasers can both fire to both bow and stern according to the update.

If I'm reading right this option will give coverage forward and back but only for things below the saucer of the ship.
3: Two Engineering Section Type-1 Phasers (Cost+) [Avg Damage: 2]

This option has those same ones but then adds two that only face back and up. Each phaser seems to cover 2 of the 8 zones around the ship.
3: Four Engineering Section Type-1 Phasers (Infra++) [Avg Damage: 3]

Edit: after thinking about it the last 2 from engineering don't sound like they give 2 zones because the primary hull gets in the way of one zone they would have covered

If I remember the tables posted a while ago correctly, we don't have a frontal arc to stick 4 phasers on, we have two: one dorsal and one central and presumably we'd split the extra saucer phasers between them for two more in each.

The Ventral Engineering phasers are said to be able to fire forward in the ventral plane, so they should be able to fire into that arc giving it the same firepower as if there were the saucer phasers, they just wouldn't be able to fire into the dorsal forward arc since that would require extra phasers mounted on top of the ship.

I think you might mis-remembered something as this update says this on it.
First is the main saucer, which is currently equipped with six Type-1 phaser emitters capable of covering all major firing arcs. Presently they have a strong presence to aft, but the forward arcs only have two emitters to cover them. Adding another two emplacements to bring the total to ten would further reinforce port and starboard, while also allowing three emitters to fire forward for each arc at the bow rather than just one.
Which outright as such states that we'd get 4 more emitters that all cover the front, half on each side. So 4 more in the forward firing arc, half of which cover starboard as well and half that cover port as well.
