Great rhombic triacontahedron for a hull, everyone?

Platonic, Archimedean, Catalan, Kepler-Poinsot, uniform, and dual polyhedra, their stellations, and polyhedron nets. Uniform Polyhedron page has many great candidates beyond "sphere" and "platonic solid" for fun spaceship hullform.

[X] Horizontal Axis Nacelles (+0.4 Maximum Warp Factor)

The advantages offered by a higher sprint speed are difficult to ignore for a fast-response ship intended for local defense and basic patrols, so you end up spreading the nacelles out along the horizontal axis. It gives the ship an almost aquatic look, like some sort of skate or ray. With the nacelle positioning decided, the only thing left is the main engines.

The first option is to mount it on the aft midline, taking up the rear of the ship just behind the nacelle struts. The ship might not be especially manoeuvrable as a result, but it would save a great deal of internal space in the half-saucer for auxiliary systems. You could fit a couple of cargo bays, maybe even a basic shuttlepod hatch.

The second option is to mount a pair in the flat surface formed by the truncation of the saucer section. This would give the ship greater responsiveness and agility for turns, but would impinge on the internal spaces and reduce the room for auxiliary functions. It would never be more than a purely military patrol vessel.

Great, now we have to name this the Stingray-Class Interceptor.

I know others might want to go midline, but technology is such a limiting factor at this point in time that trying to make a multi-role ship just means it is bad at everything. At least with the dual thrusters the ship can actually do the interception job we want it to.

Agreed.

Making this ship have a better turn rate with help it in its interception duties.

What a cutie!

Really nailing that Enterprise-era aesthetic.

[X] Dual Reaction Thrusters

This is a small corvette. It should be designed to do the job of a corvette. If we wanted to build an armed cargo ship, we should have gone for the design option to build an armed cargo ship. This ship isn't going to have the legs to make cargo capacity appealing. The shuttle is honestly more appealing here because there are definitely in anti-piracy missions where a shuttle would come in handy for boarding vessels.

But ultimately, I worry that trying to build a multi-role frigate which can operate shuttles is just going to lead to a compromised design if it reduces our ability to effectively chase down pirates. Admittedly, I suppose that agility is not the same thing as straight line speed, and we don't necessarily need to be able to catch pirates all the time, just drive them off... but agility also makes this ship more evasive when fighting larger or more powerfully armed adversaries. A.K.A. almost everyone in the Alpha Quadrant at the moment.

This ship is probably going to be the lynchpin of our system defence for a while, so making it zippier in a fight seems like a good idea. It might prove crucial if we ever need to send three of these things to try and fight off a Bird-of-Prey. Or if we end up producing the design in bulk during the Earth-Romulan war.

I agree with all of the comments noting issues with making a multi-role "do everything" ship - especially considering the NX Project, which isn't in our wheelhouse (yet) is meant to be the do-everything boat for United Earth Starfleet, so building ships that are smaller, cheaper, and faster to build is a very good idea.

Don't get me wrong, multi-role ships are absolutely the future of Starfleet. The way Star Trek works as a setting basically guarantees that, but with Human technological inferiority, trying to make them right now is a massive mistake.

One thing I do hope to avoid is the Treaty of Algeron, and the loss of ability for Starfleet to make cloaked ships.

Oh, so this is the reason why Starfleet can't create cloaked ships, huh?
Yeah, I mean it doesn't happen anytime soon timeline wise, it is like 150 years from now so it won't be affecting our designs for a while. But the fact Starfleet was barred from making cloaked ships after the Romulans had always used them so effectively, bugged me more than a little bit.

The Romulans are so salty that they put in the treaty that the Federation aren't allowed to research cloaking tech, along with an implied threat that they'll back out of the peace treaty if the Federation declined.

At least, that's what I can imagine happening.

Nice images. I feel like with those 3 profiles there must be some programmes which can makena 3d composite of it, from the shared angle at least. Any chances of an isometric image?
