I think we can go with the trees. If we go cargo this thing will be competing with the Archer and that's just not competition you want.

I think this could be a nice generalist design to rebuild the fleet, but it's been a minute since we had a specialized science ship. Let's grow some space oranges.

[X] Medium Cargo Bay

Strangely not finding myself on the pure science side. She's already well-armed, and a small sacrifice here gives us a great generalist that will still be great at science.

While the belly of the ship still needs to support the majority of the weight
We are so gonna find one of these ships decades after it's been posed mostly intact underneath a glacier, aren't we?

A valid concern, though any industrial output not going into Project Darwin could be poured into a simpler platform more suited to mass production. An Akula equivalent, perhaps - a simple saucer with modest cargo and lab spaces, and a rapidfire launcher ahead. It would also be another opportunity to do something interesting with nacelle configuration.

Though this is predicted on our game master being willing to do another design after Project Darwin.
Honestly, given (as far as we know) they've got no project, yet, I could see SanFran asking for/getting the hull as it is right now* and just fitting it out as a more generalist design than what we're going for. It'd help get Starfleet's generalist numbers back up, it'd make the ship and its so far rather bespoke landing system more common/less of a pain to maintain/source parts for and also give them a quick project.

*since modules aside, it's basically good to go: "While the Darwin is now technically spaceworthy there's not much point with launching it without the internal facilities to accomplish its mission."

Of course, for all we know they've got a combat cruiser coming along based on one of the saucers we didn't pick, given they've historically been able to fulfil every brief and get it out in good order (see getting the Radiant and Newton out, to us only being able to pick one, and the only reason they didn't have a diplomatic ship design being because that was a personal thing for our bureau).

We've already got one good cargo design we know gets built post war, and it's faster than any other bulk cargo vessel.

This ship is going to help in recovery not by rebuilding what's been lost, but rather by ensuring that the Federation can settle a myriad of new worlds more safely and let us grow away from the direct attention of the Klingons and Romulans.

Therefore I have to pick:

It has surprisingly strong weapons and trees. We should make this the Lorax class, with the rest of the class named for Dr Sues characters.

"This is the Lorax, we speak for the trees. Mess with these trees and we break all your knees."

[X] Medium Cargo Bay

This isn't some sort of mega cargo bay, it just gives us a Warp 8 cargo capability. The Newton is the other semi-modern ship that does this but we are going to take a lot of Newton losses and it seems like the sort of thing that would be nice to have on more modern ships rather than relying on a last gen design.
