Winter 8/Witch Visit 2.1
[X] The Hut, where Hirkir resides
"Shapecrafters sometimes create shapecrafted defenses, so you should always keep an eye out while interacting with one," Hasvir explains as he carefully eyes the door. Finding it free of any tampering, he raps his knuckles against the repaired wood, "Hirkir, open up! It's me!"

A shuffling can be heard on the other side of the door as a choked yelp rings out. Things rattle as they fall to the ground, a soft crunch followed by a lengthy stretch of quiet swearing. Eventually, the bulbous voice of Hirkir comes barreling through the wood. "Who is 'me?'"

Hasvir hisses through clenched teeth, his eyes narrowing to fine lines. "Hirkir, I'm not playing around here. Open the door or I open it for you."

"No, no I don't think I wi-"

Wood creaks and groans as a fresh ravine is gouged into the surface. The air turns dry and crisp as Hasvir very casually allows the door to swing open to reveal the form of a somewhat plump man frozen in the entryway.

"-iieeelcome to my home, brother dearest!" Hirkir's broad smile is as strained as can be as he moves in for a hug. Hasvir's pointing finger stops him in his tracks as the air dries ever further.

"Take another step and I'll leave you looking like your front door," Hasvir growls as Hirkir's plastered-on smile falls away, fear flashing in his eye.

You pause in entering after him as your eyes dart between the brothers. Tension drapes across the room like a cat across a lap. But unlike with cat and mouse, the role of prey and predator is not so clear cut.

"How am I supposed to know you're my brother if I can't touch you?" Hirkir demands as his fingers wiggle in a rather confidence un-inspiring manner.

"If you touch me, you're going to slip in some kind of toxin organ." Hasvir's finger doesn't waver. Your lips start to chap from how dry the air is getting. Trausti looks particularly uncomfortable, as an ice specialist he has to be feeling the heat harder than most.

"So? If you really are my brother, then you'll have nothing to fear!"

"If I had let you put something like that in me before, you would have triggered it the moment you heard my voice."

"And if you had died, then you wouldn't have been my brother!"

...You now see why people don't always load up on shapecrafting, if this is the ordeal they have to go through every time they want more work done to them.

Regardless, this isn't going anywhere fast.

What do you do?

AN: Short one, yes, but I'm shooting for a few updates today

No moratorium, short vote.

Oh boy, he's a complete looney toon.

So, uh, my gut feeling says to leave it for Hasvir to sort out while we check out the Witch's remains... Come to think of it though, why is it getting so hot in here?

Hmmmm. On a gut level I'm inclined to try persuasion because we've historically been pretty good at that, but on the other hand I'm not sure our presence is actually a selling point on Hasvir's side of this particular argument, and I don't have a good line of argumentation here given how little we know Hirkir...I am somewhat ambivalent.

Instead of the heat would it be the lack of humidity in the air?

-[X] "If this was all a trick, then why would someone trying to trick you bring me with them? Everyone knows we dislike eachother!"
-[X] "Now open the door and stop being ungrateful to your brother who came all this way to find you."

We might as well try talking, this is going nowhere.

I think that just addressing the fact that we dislike each other is better than trying to ignore it, and actually makes a decent argument. No guarantee that it'll work, because his mind is probably a random number generator occupied by gerbils on PCP, but ultimately we can't control that, so let's just give it our best shot.

Yeah, I'll buy that argument.

Maybe more Shapecrafters need to craft sanity organs, because this is some kinda logic at a tangent with the rest of the world.

My first trought reading the chapter was that the Witch is possessing Hirkir body in some way. And now that we found her, she is trying to play dumb.

Then i read more and started thinking that maybe Hirkir is actualy hiding something. Maybe he was more involved in Horra plans than the rest of the family. Maybe he was actualy loyal to him, and now he was plotting revenge against us.

Now i am in dubt if he us an actual secret magical mastermind, or just a lunatic.

Calling the vote here in a few minutes, as it's looking pretty one-sided

What would you like to see more of in NorseQuest? Doesn't have to be something major or anything

I'm pretty satisfied as is, but if I had to pick something, then more information on other cultivation systems. All of those seem super interesting, and more information on them is always very enlightening. Like, even if it's not directly helpful in any way, the more of it we get the better. Even just little details like what they call their stats and Trick-equivalents and things like that are always super interesting.

Just a minor pedantry: The door is already open, thanks to Hasvir.
Also, @Imperial Fister , Hikir is not on the relations page. So... we dont, personally, have any beef with him either.... currently.

And just a personal note, but i think that will trigger his paranoia if we DO have personal enmity with him.

-[X] This reunion is nice and all, but wouldn't it be easier to ask things only family would know? The rest of us will even back away if you want until you are done, but please don't drag it out. Hikir being here was not the reason we came after all.

Edit: sorry for the double post.

Crafts and decorations... yes, i am guilty in enjoying visuals.... and How To Train Your Dragon also spoiled me on visuals....

Not exactly. He was the other one of Horra's sons at the fight on the ice when we were 12. So we did actually fight him once...I'm pretty sure he never spoke, though, so we don't know how deep that grudge goes, if he even cares at all. Hence the lack of him being listed under relationships, since we're not really clear how he feels about us.

More normal turns. The adventures are fun and all and we get a bunch of extra othsirr and rewards from them.

But doing too much of them lowers our ability to actually advance between them and actually use our rewards.

Other then that, maybe more interaction with the kids? They are mostly in the background and it would be nice to see some mother son/daughter time's or seeing Halla teaching them about Norse society.

Obviously I really enjoy the combat so I'd love as much of that as you're happy to write, and maybe more, hmmm, I guess you could call them mini-adventures? Like, something along the lines of some of the smaller adventures we had in the earlier arcs, where it was not necessarily committing us to nine consecutive updates of combat/adventuring, which I know you've said can be a lot if it's very frequent. Little sidequests which still give us a chance to stretch our legs and swing our sword around a bit.

Aside from that... I loved our spat with Abjorn in the last update, more dramatic moments like that would be great. Not where it feels forced/unearned, obviously, but I love me some character drama. :D

For the record, I basically agree with this in a general sense, but think it's worth noting that things we fix in regard to this kind of thing should generally stay fixed. Like, if we put real effort into patching things up with Abjorn, this kind of conflict shouldn't recur with him specifically for quite a while if at all. It sucks if effort doesn't get rewarded in a Quest like this, and that includes in regards to interpersonal stuff.
