That seems like a pretty lame way to go about it to me personally, but yeah, we could, RAW.
good luck doing it the hard way

1: Check how many Infusions we have right now and look at how many Foemen that would mean.

2: Remember that we would also have to fight every monster in the Hading forest and every Giant* in the area (Although not Drysalt** apparently)

*Just for the record those can go head to head with 10th decade Knights

**I am aware that Drysalt is a Troll, those also show up if it happens at night.

Remember, as things stand, the Enemy has accounted for over ten thousand years of smart people coming up with One Neat Trick, and has solved for all of them.

The only thing he can't solve for is something both New, and something he can't directly interfere with. Which Charred Soul qualifies as.

I agree mostly, though I think Ironjaw is actually like a steelfather? I remember something about him being like a steelfather without paying the price of steel
I remember it that way, too.
Ironjaw has the title of Steelfather without having tainted himself with Steel.

Anyways, I am all for the spread of knowledge over time as befits the story, but I don't think I wanna push it hard during Halla's life.

Halla, to me, feels like a family woman. She is concerned with her family first and foremost. She wants to keep them safer than anyone else, prepare them for what is to come, and build up what she has for them to benefit from. A lot of her decisions in this quest have been based on, if not selfishness, then 'family first' mentality.
Disagree. Hard.

Actively keeping it to ourselves would be betraying the goal of liberating it.

And where has Halla been exceptionally "family first"?
She loves them deeply and would do everything for them, but she is more of a pillar of the community than selfish/extended-too-include-family-selfish.

RAI this is the intended solution.

It feels like a really lame and bad intended solution then. The solution is handed to us. Our win condition was given to us at game start. Not developed, not cleverly thought up, just 'here's the method to win'. It feels... lame? If Blackhand wasn't so twisted up, we would have won the quest concept and been able to talk about Odr at 13. :p it feels like a very video gamey concept.

I like what we've done with the Book, trying to skirt the rules of Disclosure and what it is, trying to find ways to teach people the steps to find it 'on their own', just pushing them to the right mindsets and focuses and letting them connect the dots. It would feel more cool to have it be things we did that let us disclose more safely.

I dunno. I've stated my issues with the Charred Soul before, in that I fear its going to make all our characters feel samey as we get massive xp bonuses to whatever the last person did. Having it even more so be the 'one trick' we need is weird.

Edit: To make it clear, I have no issue with Charred Soul as a 'pass down our knowledge to ensure we don't backslide back to game start' mechanic. I do think it's kinda lame to have it be a One Neat Trick that lets us just avoid the Enemy's detection in every life as we move from one character to the next.

We could try stopping at Bornholm though. Ironjaw lives there.

Huh, looking at it... it's actually right on our route to Uppsala. We'd literally have to sail past the island anyway. Spent far too long making a map which might help visualise things:

Map of the Voyage for Steinarr's Casting Ceremony .jpg

@DeadmanwalkingXI, thoughts on adding this to our itinerary?

The worst that can happen is it's sort of uneventful. Ironjaw is not likely to mistreat Steinarr's children, especially when we're making a polite social call. As a courtesy, I think it makes sense to let him know that Steinarr passed... and there are other things we might be able to discuss.

I mean, it really didn't? we know its the solution now, but it took lots of figuring out. and even then, its not the actual win condition, cause just passing Odr to our heir isn't win condition. eventually we will need to spread the knowledge beyond the one person who gets charred soul.
this is the trick for growing over several lifetimes, with each successor adding his own tricks to the mix, until someone is strong enough to go on and disclose 'the hard way' and give the knowledge to the general populace. or clever enough to write an even better Hallamal and make sure everyone reads it.

I really don't think so. yeah, the base premise of all characters is fire, we get massive xp to it. but thats the only thing, and we never got xp multipliers to other Blackhand stuff.

on the other hand our inheritor will have lots of traits that point in different directions. it can be mechanical traits making a character better at magic(Twins), leadership and cunning(Sigurdr) or martial stuff(Evyor and Asgierr). then there are stuff they will gain in life(Hugareida for example) before we couldn't overly influence matter. and then there is personality- for example, if Sigurdr becomes an adventurer and explorer his build is gonna reflect that.

then there are stuff we're just bars us from copying Halla. our next kid is unlikely to have Standstill, for example. and he might be great at other Hugareida(ie Steinnar was really talented with plant based Hugareida).

plus the tutoring and 'class' also influences matters. there is a real possibility that if we pick Sigurdr he will become a skald which greatly changes the build. or Evyor deciding to pursue swordmanship above all else which is very likely. same for the twins if they have twin magic an seersight.

that seems like a really good idea. its only a shame we don't have Blackhand with us rn since it will be fun to hear him react to his old pal

Yeah, when I imagined us meeting Ironjaw, I always imagined we'd have had Blackhand with us to establish our bona fides. Still, on some level, it also feels sort of appropriate if it turns out this way...

...Blackhand left, and we've fought off an invasion of Agder, defeated Hooknails, said goodbye to our father, learnt the identity of his killers, and (if we choose to) are going to meet Ironjaw. Really feels like Halla is standing on her own two feet and facing the world. He'll be so impressed with us when he comes back.

yeah. definitely. I also think we might want to share the info from the divination with Ironjaw. I mean, I doubt he will be too pleased about Steinnar's murder either

I mean the enemy isn't dumb, once we start enacting changes and all he'll be on the look out for Charred Soul users down the line. I guess once we die with a heir it's a reset of the attention the enemy will be giving us but I think he'll start to get wise about it after a few times and start to devote more attention to us.

Cool map, but that's not where Finnmark is.

Oh cheers, whereabouts is it?

Does it cover areas of modern-day Courland and Russia, or should it be further up? Obviously on the map I put it on the southern coast of Finland because that's the only bit of Finland on the map.

EDIT:

Lmao, I was assuming that Finnmark was an old-timey name you were using for Finland, rather than being an area in Norway. Fixed the map.

It'll let you avoid the Enemy's detection. Once.

Okay, that's less lame yeah. Having it be something we can do one time as a final middle finger to the Enemy is much cooler than it being a secret cheat code.

I'm picturing Halla's Heir speaking at her funeral as her ghost gives her farewells: and then teaches every single person present at the funeral the secret of Odr, as one massive disclosure.

Totally, though that may not be the best idea.

I thought it was too. However, you can put Kvenland on the map if you were so inclined.

I would show you a picture of where, exactly, Kvenland is, but Discord is being weird right now so that'll have to wait.

I was trying to find some resolution to the apparent paradox of a Steelfather who's able to go on functioning as a Norseman (which requires periodic orthstirr expenditure to win fights), but who apparently has no minions or proxies to provide him with orthstirr.

The key word there is 'earn'. IF said they can't get new Orthstirr, not that they can't recover their existing pool normally (we have no info one way or the other on the latter). Being able to do that is by far the most likely.

Hard disagree. We still needed to actually gain the knowledge in order to pass it on and figure out that we need to Disclose on someone without Infusion for it to work. It's a cheat-y workaround, but those are needed when fighting something as powerful as the Enemy and outsmarting more powerful enemies is cool.

I'd be fine with it if it's an option. For narrative reasons, we probably want Blackhand with us when meeting Ironjaw, so having it just not be an option would also make sense to me. Or perhaps only an option on the way back, if Blackhand rejoins us in Gotland.

Picking up or at least informing Ironjaw that his once-protege died in an assassination and we are going to spread his ashes is a nice thing at least. Bonds matter and our father respected Ironjaw for what he did, even if he didn't agree with him on everything and he wasn't like, someone he called a father figure.

Here's the location of Kvenland

Oh, is Kvenland a region of Finland in the quest?

Historically, I think Kvenland encompasses basically all of modern-day Finland as well as other parts of Scandanavia and Russia. At least, in terms of the consensus of scholars about what region "Kveland" generally refers to when it's used in the Sagas. Basically the "Finnish Tribes" section in this map.

I considered changing "Finland" to "Kvenland", but it seemed like we're already using the term "Finns" and "Finnish" to refer to the people who live their and their culture.

It's on our return route as well, so that could work. That being said, I'm not averse to meeting him ourselves, as fun as it would be to meet him with Blackhand.

@Imperial Fister, thoughts?

Well, 'Finland' is specifically mentioned as a place in Egils Saga alongside Kvenland. Kvenland was the area of modern day Finland that was ruled by the Norse.

From Chapter 14 - Thorolf again in Finmark (Bolded by me):
"Finmark is a wide tract; it is bounded westwards by the sea, wherefrom large firths run in; by sea also northwards and round to the east; but southwards lies Norway; and Finmark stretches along nearly all the inland region to the south, as also does Halogaland outside. But eastwards from Naumdale is Jamtaland, then Helsingjaland and Kvenland, then Finland, then Kirialaland; along all these lands to the north lies Finmark, and there are wide inhabited fell-districts, some in dales, some by lakes. The lakes of Finmark are wonderfully large, and by the lakes there are extensive forests. But high fells lie behind from end to end of the Mark, and this ridge is called Keels."

If you go to Bornholm, you won't be meeting Ironjaw—as he won't be there. Nobody meets with Ironjaw, he meets with you.

Ironjaw has to be introduced in a very specific way, I'm afraid.
