Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

The Album
The Album:

It had surprised him, years ago, when Carrie had started speaking to him in his native tongue during his stint in the hospital, something that endeared her all the more to him even as he slowly recovered...even if her pronunciation was complete bullocks, forcing him to hide his wines at her attempts. She must have seen this in him, because after a time her stunted Irish became more verbose and could occasionally hold onto a conversation for at least a couple of minutes at a time as the months, and later years, went by. By the time they had Mary, she was as fluent one could be outside of Ireland and New York, which really helped when it came time to teach their daughter the language. When, outside of his knowledge for a time, she began to sing full on lullabies in his mother tongue to their daughter this past year, he knew it would be difficult for him to love her even more.

But that happened all the same when, he noticed her recording all his absentminded songwriting, all the time he spent practicing on the guitar (as well as his few attempts at bass and mandolin), when she gave him a copy of them on their anniversary...at which point, to his dread, he discovered that she had taken a great many of those recordings to make a proof of concept for a heavier Rock n' Roll-style play, to which the both of their voices lent a sort of a...stranger, more primal tone to their words. And because they couldn't very well leave the house in her current state when the doctor heavily recommended bedrest yet she refused to stay idle, Bruce assisted Carrie in performing the first Highwayman Concept Album...entirely in Irish.

He rubbed his eyebrows, tired after the third rehearsal. At least she was kinda listened to the doctor and stayed in bed for all her singing.

An Triail:

The play is set in 1960s Ireland and revolves around the story of Máire Ní Chathasaigh, a young woman who experiences an unplanned pregnancy and becomes a single mother. Máire's family disowns her when they discover that she was impregnated by Pádraig, a married man and a teacher in the local school. Left with no support, Máire is forced to leave her parish and relocate to Dublin in search of employment to provide for herself and her child, Pádraigín.

In Dublin, Máire faces further marginalization as she is judged for being an unmarried pregnant woman and later as a single mother. Her living situation becomes precarious when her accommodation collapses, forcing her to find an alternative place to live. She finds refuge in a brothel, where she forms a bond with a compassionate prostitute named Mailí, who takes pity on her.

The narrative oscillates between flashbacks of Máire's memories and a trial. At the beginning of the play, Máire's mother is introduced, emphasizing her devoutness and denial of any wrongdoing. This sentiment is echoed by many other characters throughout the story.

The plot takes a tragic turn when Máire has a distressing encounter with Pádraig, who rejects both her and their child. This event exacerbates Máire's already difficult circumstances, ultimately leading to her decision to end her own life and that of her child by inhaling natural gas from her oven, mirroring the tragic fate of poet Sylvia Plath.

Throughout the play, the themes of societal judgment, isolation, and the consequences of moral hypocrisy are explored, as Máire navigates the challenges of single motherhood in a conservative and unforgiving environment.

A/N: Was listening to Christopher Lee's 'Massacre of the Saxons' and couldn't help but fixate on the lyrical monologing that wouldn't feel outta place on a playwright's stage, and thought about Bruce doing a similar album, as a way to decompress from all the kids, but then realized there was more potential if Carrie was right there alongside him and that, beyond everything going on with the team, what would she get up to with twins in those final weeks in pregnancy.

Also because it amused me to no end to imagine both Carrie as one of the first Scream Queens, and that their kids would be (technically) one of the first metal heads.

[EDIT: Forgot to mention, that is a real play that came out in 1964, penned and written entirely in Irish, in case you're wondering why they're singing in Irish.]

By leveraging Ireland's talent pool and utilizing the country's favorable tax environment [read: tax haven], Lucasfilm aims to acquire and distribute European films and television while contributing to Ireland's entertainment industry and economic growth. The campus will foster collaboration, host industry events, and provide opportunities for local talent, positioning Ireland as a thriving hub for creative industries.

--[X] Lucasfilm Japan: Sunrise Campus [$75 Million]: Lucasfilm plans to establish the Lucasfilm Japan Campus, a centralized hub for its Japanese departments and a collaborative space for employees to work together and innovate. The campus will include production facilities, such as soundstages, film studios and a legal department, and will house a subsidiary of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for advanced visual effects work. By fostering cultural exchange and providing a platform for Japanese directors to experiment, Lucasfilm aims to deepen its connections in the Japanese film industry and push the boundaries of storytelling. The campus will also serve as an educational center and a venue for industry events, contributing to the growth and development of the local film community.

Operating on a global scale demands the highest level of legal acumen and strategic prowess. As a major player in the industry, Lucasfilm understands that errors and missteps are simply not an option. In this critical phase, the company is committed to investing in a robust legal infrastructure that can adeptly navigate the complexities of the world stage. By bolstering its legal team, especially overseas, implementing cutting-edge legal strategies, and prioritizing risk management, Lucasfilm aims to proactively address legal disputes, safeguard its intellectual property, and secure its long-term interests. This expansion of legal operations will empower Lucasfilm to not only compete but excel among industry giants, fortifying its position as a leader in the entertainment landscape. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and preserving each company's unique legacy, Shamrock aims to drive growth and success in the Irish automotive market. By leveraging their expertise and injecting resources into research and development, manufacturing processes, and cutting-edge technologies, they will enhance product offerings and competitiveness. -[X] Your Rival: Arnold Schwarzenegger: You have no idea who this guy is… also, why does he want to rival you. Also, what the fuck is he doing, going around saying you are the only reason that things got so weird? Whatever that means. DC: 30
-[X] Research stuff, see if anything piques your interest: You may have graduated High School as a kid, but you never stopped trying to learn. DC: 15 (Write-in what you want to learn about below)
--[X] Homesteading: Carrie wants fresh tomatoes, she's getting fresh tomatoes!..which means that, you need to figure out a greenhouse situation considering its winter. Oh, and Mary wants to help.

Total Cost:
- Lucasfilm Warchest: 75+75+50 = $200 Mil.
- Personal: 100 = $100 Mil.

First, taking care of our family and our people is a priority over everything else before we move onto the financial side of things.

Given the Lucasfilm warchest having roughly 5 Billion U$D (plus or minus expenses, profits and film projects), and the scares of the past few turns, felt the need to make gaining allies at home and abroad as a priority, since I feel we've seriously lucked out.

Credit to MysteryCPU for the writing blueprint for the Lucasfilm Legal and Japan expansions, which by the way remind me that at somepoint in the coming decades, I think we should consider having additional campuses in Africa (Tunisia?), Australia, India, and South America.

Also would have rather not have used an action on the Arnold situation after an absurd degree of failures, but given it's an autopass this turn, I'll relent.

[EDIT: Added lines to each of the Lucasfilm expansions that would include a dedicated Legal department as per Rui's suggestion.]

Not a big fan of the plan. First off, it's wasteful not to include the Werewolf action in the plan because the Werewolf is our antagonist and is going to be the most iconic part of the movie, so you want ILM to do its best and make it as scary and memorable as the Xenomorph.

Second, it should be remembered that our primary focus for this turn is going to be the Moonlight Diner movie. Bruce is not only starring in it but he also needs to be the Director and Producer. It doesn't make sense that while Bruce is doing all of this that he would spend like half the month engaging in high level business negotiations when that would only take time away from the movie. It's not realistic and if we delay on the movie, then that means we'll still be working when Carrie gives birth. My plan knocks all of Moonlight Diner out of the way so Bruce can then focus on raising the twins. That's why I made my secondary actions just quick purchases of book rights and social stuff.

Even on the business negotiations, Lucasfilms Legal doesn't need expanding since it already has a pretty strong performance of +30 and a reroll and hasn't failed us yet since we started it. The Irish Lucasfilms isn't really gonna do anything but sit around since we can already negotiate for European films from our own office, not to mention it's gonna be irrelevant when we have the internet. Tax haven is a bit scummy and considering we became a 5 billion dollar company in seven years, the tax haven isn't gonna do anything critical besides make big number even bigger.

I am strongly against anything to do with the purchase of a car company since Bruce has shown no high interest in cars, he has no experience with cars, and is a completely different field than his primary pursuits in entertainment. Bruce purchasing Shamrock is just a flex and we're not gonna become a super billionaire from it because the costs of production are far higher than movies and we'll get a far smaller profit stream. It's just wasteful spending just to flex and Bruce doesn't have any business investing significant time on an Irish car company when he's gotta raise the twins and prep for Kung Fu Kid. This isn't like Carrie and the Lakers where work is a 20 minute drive and she can be hands off. It's a bad pursuit.

As a final reminder, Bruce is about to have twins and he's still got a 2 year old daughter. I don't want Bruce to be a crappy absentee Hollywood parent. He should be there for his family and there's no need to become Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk when there's lots of opportunities for expansion existing within entertainment and its related fields.

So uh… I…

Oh fine George you get a roll:

D100 => 100

Oh… oh… oh this is going to be good.

George what exactly do you mean about… making the entire thing digital. How would you do that, the tech isn't there yet!

George: Pixar go brrr!

Movie Pitch: Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
So, we're finally in the 80s, and you know what that means; Dungeons and Dragons baby! Ah, I remember back in the day when I first saw the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon and loved every single episode of it. Frankly, it was one of the better written shows in my opinion, with so many adventures, laughter, and cool characters that referenced the material as it was. It was a shame in my opinion that it didn't get as far as it should, and ended in such a cliffhanger. Though I will admit, having the entire party working with their greatest enemy at the end was a stroke of genius!

Now, hopefully we can try that again, but first I would like to give some love to a movie that unfortunately could not get the right amount of marketing, nor the right amount of love, this year. The Dungeon and Dragons film was amazing, and it worked mainly because they managed to understand the setting and lore while also working with, or around, it. Sure, some of the jokes landed flat, but it's not something that can't be fixed in post-production, or perhaps with a slight retouch of the script.

But ultimately, I just feel that this movie would be great if done in this decade. At the very least it would become a cult classic, and the idea of sticking it to those moral guardians that try to demonize the game would be fun too.

Thus, i give you:

Movie Pitch:
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

GENRE: Action/Adventure/Fantasy

SUBGENRE: Comedy/Drama

FORMAT: Movie

Set Up: Based on the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, it is set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Edgin Darvis, an ex-Harper turned thief, escapes from prison with his partner, a female barbarian, and reunites with a no-talent wizard and a druid new to their team in an effort to rob the cheating conman who stole all their loot from the heist that landed them behind bars, and used it to install himself as the Lord of Neverwinter. Only the traitor is allied with a powerful Red Wizard who has something far more sinister in store.

Director: Bruce O'Brian
Composer: Hans Zimmer

Edgin Darvis: He is a human bard, and a former member of the Harpers, who became a thief later on after the death of his wife. He raised his daughter Kira with his friend Holga afterwards, and after being sent to prison following a heist gone wrong, he plots their escape in hopes of being reunited with his daughter. Despite his life of crime, he maintained his former moral code and would steal only from those he thought deserved to be embarrassed and to be relieved of their excess riches. He would also try to make good on his past failures, both as a thief and as a father.

Played By: Mel Gibson
Alternate: Val Kilmer

Holga Kilgore: She is an Uthgardth Barbarian woman who was banished from the Uthgardt Elk Tribe for marrying an outsider. She acts as a surrogate mother for Kira and is imprisoned with Edgin. Despite her ferociousness in battle and bad temper, Holga surprisingly has a softer side as well as a warm heart and generosity. She is forever loyal to her companions and quick to protect them. Since being exiled from her tribe, she's created a new connection with her adopted family. Though many assumed her relationship with Edgin to be that of a couple, in reality they are more like brother and sister.

Played By: Chelsea Field
Alternate: Joanne Whalley

Xenk Yendar: He is a human paladin and adventurer from Thay. He is also briefly a fellow adventurer of Edgin Darvis, Holga Kilgor, Simon Aumar, and Doric, but was renowned as a holy warrior, healer, and hero in his own right. He narrowly escaped the lich Szass Tam's "rise to power" in Thay and as a result, ages more slowly than a normal human. Xenk embodies what it means to be a heroic divine warrior against all the odds. He has sworn an Oath of Devotion to help the innocent and uphold justice, and he has a reputation for kindliness, honor, and integrity.

Played By: David Bowie
Alternate: Michael Keaton

Simon Aumar: He is a half-elf sorcerer who is the descendant of Elminster Aumar, a notable wizard. He was once rejected romantically by Doric. Simon has low self-esteem, is lacking in confidence, and is plagued by self-doubt. He cares, and fears, what other people think about him and so he tends to make self-deprecating remarks, reasoning it is better to tear himself down before others have the chance. Nevertheless, he performs well under pressure, as in fact, his true power lays in wild magic, a force that he can't control but has to learn to master in order to tap into his true potential.

Played By: Eddie Murphy
Alternate: Denzel Washington

Doric: She is a Tiefling druid and a member of the Emerald Enclave based in the Neverwinter Wood. Born to human parents, Doric spent much of her life living among a community of wood elves of the North, before embarking on a series of adventures that would take her to the lands south of Waterdeep, to the city of Neverwinter, and even the perilous Underdark. Doric kept an emotional distance to protect herself from other people and her own powers. While Doric was sometimes curt, and ever the stoic, she put great value in those friends who took the time to truly earn her trust.

Played By: Linda Hamilton
Alternate: Jennifer Grey
Forge Fitzwilliam: He is a human rogue and confidence trickster, and later Lord of Neverwinter. He was a former partner-in-crime of Edgin Darvis, Holga Kilgore, and Simon Aumar before he betrayed them to aid Sofina, a Red Wizard of Thay. He has been taking care of Edgin's daughter, Kira, since Edgin's imprisonment, as well as turning her against her father to better manipulate her. His morality is malleable, if not absent altogether, and he uses a charming smile, flattery, and lies to manipulate people—and backstab them given the opportunity. Even when caught lying, he'll keep on lying to disorient and divide people.

Played By: John C. McGinley
Alternate: Christopher Walken

Sofina: She is an undead human wizard and member of the Red Wizards of Thay. She was an apprentice of Szass Tam, the Zulkir of Necromancy and later Regent of Thay, and served as ally and advisor to Lord Forge Fitzwilliam of Neverwinter. Sofina is a shrewd and patient schemer. She is aloof and disinterested in making friends, rejecting all attempts at amiability. Szass Tam called her the disciple upon whom he had always most relied. She despises the living and seeks to see them all slain and raised again as creatures of undeath like her. She also despises Forge for his false charm, arrogance, and jests.

Played By: Michelle Pfeiffer
Alternate: Meg Foster

Dralas: He is an undead human warrior and assassin from Thay. He is a servant of Szass Tam and Sofina of the Red Wizards of Thay. He is an old enemy of the Thayan paladin Xenk Yendar, with the two having clashed before. Dralas skill with the blade is undeniable as he's able to take an entire contingent of Neverwinter Guards on his own without suffering any injury. He's under the commands of Sofina to take down Edgin and his party, taking with him six of his best fighters with him.

Played By: Anthony De Longis
Alternate: Tony Carroll
Kira Darvis: She is a human girl from the town of Targos in Icewind Dale. The daughter of the thief Edgin Darvis, she became the ward of Lord Forge Fitzwilliam of Neverwinter. Though Kira loved her father, their time apart and Forge's lies left them estranged, with the girl believing he lied to her and had abandoned her to seek more riches.

Played By: Drew Barrymore
Alternate: Anne Marie McEvoy

Marlamin: He is a halfling inhabitant of Longsaddle in the Savage Frontier and Holga's Ex-Husband. He had a loving relationship with her, but had not been able to bear the fear for Holga's safety and freedom, often crying late into the night worried about her safety. Eventually the pair split off and divorced, though they still thought the best about each other.

Played By: David Rappaport
Alternate: Warwick Davis

Szass Tam: He is a powerful lich and a member of the eight Zulkirs who ruled the country of Thay and, after the War of the Zulkirs, he reigns as the Regent of Thay. He was the Zulkir of Necromancy and commanded Cyric's Legion and the Legion of Bone, a huge army of undead soldiers, led by his vampire and lich generals. Szass Tam's seat of power was the Citadel on the Thaymount.

Played By: John De Lancie
Alternate: Jack Nicholson

A.N.: I think the hardest part was finding the right actress for Kira. I mostly wanted someone with experience, but also someone that we hadn't tried before. In the end, I settled for at least half with Drew Barrymore as the main one. I think this movie can be done around the latter half of the 80s, when the Forgotten Realms Setting has already been released in OTL, though I'm not sure if we have already bought it.

No George! Don't do it! Don't fall for the siren song of Digital and CGI technology for the Indiana Jones movies! They will be ruined! We need the amazing practical effects and choreography that allowed those amazing scenes to shine as they should!

Don't do it George!

Not a big fan of the plan.
Personally not a big fan of trying to influence others' votes 12+ hours after the initial vote is cast, especially given that A) you aren't even voting for this plan anyway, and B) since I believe that's long past the point of making a argument for genuine reasons, as it comes off as being desperate for one's own vote to win and only bothered because they might lose.

But whatever, let's move onto your arguments.
First off, it's wasteful not to include the Werewolf action in the plan because the Werewolf is our antagonist and is going to be the most iconic part of the movie, so you want ILM to do its best and make it as scary and memorable as the Xenomorph.
I stand by it, given that for every horror movie ever made its lived or died based on the acting in the film. If we've reached the point where people are bemoaning a bad monster, we've already passed the point of no return.
My plan knocks all of Moonlight Diner out of the way so Bruce can then focus on raising the twins. That's why I made my secondary actions just quick purchases of book rights and social stuff.
Counterargument, these negotiations are being done on weeknights, after filming wraps up, and are being assisted by others.
Even on the business negotiations, Lucasfilms Legal doesn't need expanding since it already has a pretty strong performance of +30 and a reroll and hasn't failed us yet since we started it.
For 90% of those instances (actually might be higher than that), all of those issues occurred within the United States, as we move towards globalization and gathering films from further abroad, I think it's highly likely that those rolls soon won't be enough and I'm trying to preempt that.
You do realize a big motivation for the European office is so that it largely automates the gathering of European films for distribution instead of us needing to purposefully go out and look for them every turn, right? Beyond that, it opens an entirely new market to us that doesn't even have a dedicated television and film service, netting us additional income?
Who says I picked them for money? I picked Irish car firms for public relations reasons, and the potential for one of our companies developing hybrid and electric vehicles for commercial use.

Also, I have several snippets (made canon) that absolutely do highlight Bruce has an interest in cars, even if he sees no point in owning superflashy ones.
Why do you think all my choices have stipulations in them that bring the businessmen to us? It's there in the text, and it reads super disingenuous that you've ignored that.

All in all, the only reason I didn't pick your plan, because frankly? It's boring.

I fell asleep an hour after you posted the plan and didn't have any significant free time to respond in depth until now, that's why I posted it at said time. I held those objections when I read at first glance and my intention was to debate to bring voters to my plan which is a standard part of all Quests.

A debate is fine, but I just feel the response could have come much earlier given how much is actually there in the text of your argument.

I kinda agree with Kaiser Chris' criticisms, mainly because I feel the Lucasfilms offices in different parts of the world are unnecessary. If we need a movie from there then we can just try to use the option for distribution.

At the same time, these offices seem to make the part about looking for movies unnecessary as that will be done automatically, thus taking part of what makes the quest fun (looking for movies to distribute) superfluous.

Also, the Homesteading option, the legal option, and not choosing the werewolf where we're trying to make a movie with it as the main antagonist seem like just bad ideas. Homesteading has never been something we've shown interest in, adding for an expasion when our legal department has been working just fine seems wasteful, and to the idea that the Main Antagonist does not need that much work is like saying that Halloween did not need Michael Myers to work.

These are my thoughts.

The way I see it is that we have more then 4 billion dollars and counting upwards with no debts and we're doing nothing with it. That is playing way too safe and is worst of all BORING. So spending 5 million on licence's we're never going to use does not appeal to me while the Lucasfilm expansion is right up my alley.

An expansion that, just like the properties, will not be used either, or at least not by the players. With the licenses at leeast we can make them into movies.

It's not that I never want to spend any money, I just don't see a point on spending high amounts of money each turn just for the sake because we have 5 billion. None of the investments are critical, although I will admit that an expansion and upgrade to Sunrise studios as Orion suggested is a neat feature that I might add in a future plan if mine wins this turn.

I do plan on big stuff with the budget. Mainly purchasing companies such as Hanna-Barbera or Marvel as well as greatly expanding production of movies and shows. Not to mention a theme park or creating LucasArts. As for personal wealth, I want to save that up so next year we can invest half a billion dollars in AIDS research. Although we could just donate to charity through Lucasfilms.

That's saying we're never going to use sunrise. And remind me how long we have the rights to DUNE and the lord of the ring?
Around 5 to 6 years in game time. Nearly one year in real time. And we're waiting for 1981, at my request, to do the Dune adaptation. As well as waiting after the Dune adaptation, again at my suggestion, to do the Hobbit. So, we have plans for them, we're not letting them lie abandoned.

This has my vote when you put it into a plan. I still think we should just get the Scooby-Doo franchise rather than the whole of Hannah-Barbera, but I can recognize the value of sindication rights.
