Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

@Magoose Could I get an ETA on the next update? I wouldn't normally ask something like this, but the service that my school uses to do assignments just auto closed and submitted on me early and now I got a fucking 0 on the assignment for a professor who does not accept make-up work. Things aren't going very well and I could really use a distraction right now. I feel like I'm going fucking scream.

I think if we do that, Clint's retired Mando should be both A) wearing what's essentially "Mando Casual" to indicate this and B) be heavily implied that Retired Mandos ("are seen in the same light as Old Spartans, heavily revered for having lived and fought for as long as they have, that they're allowed special dispensenations such as not having to wear their armor full-time and owning property.

As was stated before, this isn't really the case for true Mando culture and it's really just some mystic mumbo jumbo that Dave Filoni invented to make the Mandalrians seem more cool and mysterious than they needed to be. In Legends, Mandalorian culture could be very complex and deep, but at the same time they could be extremely social Libertarian and in the era of the films, any Mandalorian who practiced the basic six tenents of the creed was considered Mandalorian and so long as they did that they could do whatever they wanted and be and identify whoever they wanted, with countless species joining the Mandalorian culture and the first two gay characters in Star Wars EU actually being Mandalorian.

To quote Wookiepedia:
The Resol'nare, or Six Actions when translated from Mando'a into Galactic Basic Standard, were the central tenets of Mandalorian life. They consisted of wearing armor, speaking the language, defending oneself and family, raising your children as Mandalorians, contributing to the clan's welfare, and when called upon by the Mand'alor, rallying to their cause.

In the Legacy of the Force books, there was a side plot where Boba Fett was taking his duties as Mandalore seriously and trying to reunite the Mando diaspora and make a proper Mando state, and there was a reformist movement of Clans who wanted the Mandalorians to be more than fighters and fight for themselves instead of being mercenaries, thus white and blue collar Mandalorians were heavily welcomed. No one in Legends gave a shit about whether or not you had your helmet on 24/7, just that you wore the helmet regularly, if you lived the life and were true to your Clan then you were Mando with each Clan having their own variations of what it meant to be Mandalorian.

From a market meta standpoint, I really like the Mandalorians as a concept because they allow for heavy freedom in fan engagement and relatability while still having a heavy cool factor. Unlike Jedi and Sith where you have to be a special space wizard and adhere strictly to a morality code, you can follow your own path as a Mandalorian with special emphasis on simple men and women making their way in the universe. They appeal to both sides of the political spectrum as conservatives who deeply value family and tradition yet are very progressive in identity and lifestyle which can allow anyone to insert themselves and root for Mandalorians because they can be one.

Since we're already struggling to display in detail the duality of The Force and the Galactic Civil War, we probably can't go too into detail for the Mandos and present them as the third faction of Star Wars that they became after the Prequels. What we can do is build up Boba Fett as a representative for Mandalorians by having him be a proper supporting character instead of a glorified extra by having that air of mystery and badassness to allure people in and show some competency in fights and a fun personality to make fans drawn in and use him as a selling point for any Mandalorian content in the future. Then in the 90s, we expand on Mandalorian lore in the Sourcebooks and present them as a playable faction in the RPGs for fans to go ham with, and for good measure throw in a video game or two and a Bantam book series, maybe have Din Djarin come to life 20-30 years early.

And Then There was Trust Turn 29 (March 1974)

Mike Eisner: 100

There was really nothing to say, but as you talked to George, he was taking a moment to think, to read, and to make things more natural, or dare you to say, realistic.

Sure that it would never be realistic, but you were happy that he would try to iron out some of the kinks.

One of the things that surprised you was the fact he did world-building through dialogue, trying a tell, not show approach, which was fine in several scenes, but there was also clunkiness that would have been better to show through the world-building, the set designs, and even through how the actors reacted and acted their scenes.

But what surprised you was Mike, who was listening, slowly, and methodically, interested, but nonetheless remaining out of the artist's world. He was… not going to get involved. Save for a simple question that should have been asked sooner.

"How are we going to finance it?" He asked, clearly making his business mind known. "Bruce financed a million dollars for George's last film, yet even if he did so again, the business expense and demands that we can have our… potentially enormous. That and its profits."

He looked at you, Gary, and George. "Do you all trust each other?" He asked. "Trust each other with this… potentially massive idea and investment?"

You nodded. "With all my heart." You replied to Eisner.

George was quiet, but he nodded, his mind already working on several things in his head, you could see it.

Meanwhile, Gary was hesitant… then he replied. "Only because I don't trust you." He replied to mike.

"Good. Then I recommend splitting it three ways. A third between the three of you, and whatever I can throw in in a pinch." He replied as he stood up. "Gentlemen. I may not believe in this Star Wars. Hell, I think you're putting far too much money into this campy sci fi script that won't have an audience."

But he then fumed and let out a breath, one that gave all three of you a feeling of release. "And since there is nothing I can do to stop you or ask you to delay… I must only do the one thing I can do. Help you through every step of the way, to make sure it will be a success."

"Is that admiration I hear from the stone-hearted business-focused Mike Eisner?" Gary quipped.

Mike than laughed. "I think it's exactly what this town needs. Too many money men on the top… not enough artists and dreamers." He then gave a smile. "It's admiration. It's a resignation that I have to keep you all from going over budget and behind schedule."

"Love you too Mike." You quipped.

Reward: -5 Million. You are credited as an Executive producer for Star Wars.

Hanging out with George Lucas and Lobbying for the O'Reilly foundation is something that I would like for us to do. Trying to ditribute "Way of the Dragon" and learning Japanese is another. And perhaps finding our Luke Skywalker should be our goal when it comes to casting this time around. Mark Hamill deserves this role more than anything.

When do you want to Release Star Wars?:
[]Write in the Date here. (I highly recommend the Canon Date. For obvious reasons, because ILM's Effect, especially with the bigger budget giveing George ideas.)

I'm not sure this is really necessary. OTL the film came out on May 25th, 1977, a whole three years and two months from now and we're starting far earlier than OTL because pre-production began in February of 1975, and we're jumping that by a whole year. Also the final script and filming took place on March of 1976, and we're a good two years from that. I don't see the pre-production taking that long til filming and the film was supposed to release on Christmas of 1976 but then got pushed to May because of post-production mess and dealing with Fox. So altogether, I think we can do 1976 at the latest and my preferred date would be December of 75 or summer of 1976.

Normally I'd agree with you, but this time around we have the GM teeling us that we should stay with the OTL date, and with George now having more ideas (and a bigger budget) for his space fights, then it might behoove us to listen to him.

Okay so here are my thoughts on the choices:

[]The Best of Times, and the Swift of Times: Loretta has been really good to you, and frankly, you think she's your best friend on set besides Alan. See what she thinks about what is going on. DC: 20
[]Work on your Comedy: This, looking at the first draft of the scripts, is a comedy series. And while you are a good actor, you know you are not good at comedy, even if your timing has gotten better. DC: 20

One of these two would be preferable for MASH. Heavily leaning towards Loretta because she's a fun character and an easy choice. Redemption for comedy is tempting, but I'm scared of how badly the outcome will be if we reach short, but having it be a dump roll to allow the others to succeed is tempting.

[]Importing Foreign Films: So… you may have a way to get some films showing in American Theaters. Maybe you can go to other foreign film industries and… well, ask to distribute their films. Sure many of those foreign film companies never expected an American company to distribute their films in the US… but maybe you can get money without producing them. -[] The Way of the Dragon

No matter what this is a necessity to take advantage of the +20 for this turn. Work with Mike and get "The Way of the Dragon" as a nice tribute to Bruce and hopefully cement ourselves as Bruce Lee's heir, also establish Lucasfilms as a sports/martial arts studio.

[]Preproduction (Casting Luke Skywalker): You want to Spearhead the Efforts to find you're Luke Skywalker. George is happy that you helped out. (Begin a mini-turn where you can offer the Part to any number of actors in Hollywood and beyond.) DC: 20
[]Preproduction (Casting Princess Leia): You want to Spearhead the Efforts to find you're Princess Leia. George is happy that you helped out. (Begin a mini-turn where you can offer the Part to any number of actresses in Hollywood and beyond.) DC: 20
[]Preproduction (Casting Han Solo): You want to Spearhead the Efforts to find you're Han Solo. George is happy that you helped out. (Begin a mini-turn where you can offer the Part to any number of actors in Hollywood and beyond.) DC:20

In terms of casting these are the most important to me with my dream trio being Mark, Carrie and Bruce. I'm fine with anyone else being replaced but these three have to be the essential parts. It's a shame that Some Nights isn't out yet because I'm sure Carrie could use that as strong leverage for getting the part on her own merits whereas here she just got Broadway and the Mary Tyler Moore show guest appearence. Hopefully if we pick Carrie it won't make any conflict and George can see the talent he'd be working with.

@Magoose Can you please explain how the mechanics of this casting mini-turn are in terms of what happens if we choose and succeed, what happens if we don't hit the DC, and what happens if we do not select it this turn? Does this mean that the casting can be done by George and Gary?

[]Preproduction (The Locations): Time to scout out locations you can use. Since George has several ideas that would require shooting on Location) DC:10
[]PreProduction (Ironing Out the Script): George is a good Screenwriter… but you can hire several people that can help him (Allows you to hire a screenwriter, and add some small ideas within George's Script. Or just have it focus on one particular aspect that can be improved) DC: 10

If we choose not to do casting, then these are pretty important for Foundational work because we need to make sure we know where we're filming before SFX can be accounted for and we might as well iron out the script so we can plan everything around it.

[]Paying Taxes: You will do your own taxes. And see just how much things are going to go well. DC: ???
[]Hire an Accountant: You are not doing your taxes, let a professional do it DC: 0

I'm down with either of these and it needs to be done before we do any more spending so we have our finances in order and save as much of our mega millions as possible. Remember that thanks to Omake Rewards we have a +40 to tax action.

[]The Beutey of Health: Carrie came to you and asked you if she looked beautiful. You were… very surprised when she said that. DC: 20
[]And The Great Friendship Between Debbie Reynolds and Clint Eastwood: You never expected Clint and Debbie to actually spend time together as friends. Isn't that surprising? DC: 30
[]Fuck off Scientologists!: So… a couple of your neighbors and John, have been harassed by the Church of Scientology… And they are also trespassing on your property. DC:???
[]The Friendship and Brotherhood of George Lucas: George wants to hang out and have fun. DC: 30

If we still have four actions left after Lucasfilm stuff, then I'd like to do this stuff as one nice social bunch. In order of importance, Carrie first to help her with likely anxieities and affirm Bruce's love. Scientology second to get them to fuck off and save John. George Lucas hangout third cause a mentally fit and relaxed George Lucas will boost the pre-production. Then Debbie and Clint last to see Debbie again in more positive circumstances and catch up with Clint, and maybe best case he'll offer us a role in a movie he's making this year, thus eliminating the need for auditions next turn.

[]Continue Developing The Kung Fu Kid: You want to expand the idea and make the script idea you have even better.
[]Action Directing: It seems the town has been talking about how much of a beast you are at just being a stunt person. In fact, they knew you were a student of Bruce Lee. And they think that means you know how to stage and block a fight? Maybe you can DC? ???
[] Gophering, and other signs of stuff: You want to try and learn how work behind the camera works, and what better way than being a gopher. DC: 50 (You have no idea what the hell they were doing, and you have no idea either)
[] Research stuff, see if anything piques your interest: You may have graduated High School as a kid, but you never stopped trying to learn. DC: 15 (Write-in what you want to learn about below)
-[] Learn Japanese

Finally here's my thoughts on tertiary actions to improve our skill if we somehow find ourselves with room for actions.

But here's a list of stuff we should definitely prioritize in the next few turns (1 = Highest, 3 = Current Lowest)
As was stated before, this isn't really the case for true Mando culture and it's really just some mystic mumbo jumbo that Dave Filoni invented to make the Mandalrians seem more cool and mysterious than they needed to be.
...
I'm fully aware, but I was leaning heavier on the Disney Version to introduce the Children of the Watch faction to both highlight the tensions between the various factions much earlier on than otherwise, especially one so openly conservative, and maybe introduce Din Djarin much earlier than IRL.

I absolutely agree, though considering Bruce's involvement I wonder if we can't create greater parallels between both Irish and Mandalorian cultures, given the timing and whatnot.

I can't believe I forgot we got scouted for the effin Olympics, wild.

I like [ ] Plan I'm Crazy Enough To Take On Hollywood, But The IRS? No, thank you! except for the release date of Star Wars. There's no reason to release it early, let's go for the actual release date, gives us more time to work on the project, and Mongoose said it would be ideal to go for that.

Remember, the initial Star Wars test screening was a disaster, everyone didn't like it. It only got fixed with incredible editing by George's wife and others around him. So we should take advantage of all the extra time we have to go through the initial failures.
