The Last Enochian
We open with narration
In the year 2022 the Rapture occurred
We see a man atop a white motorcycle, as he drives through a town, men and women who look at him double over, coughing and spewing blood. We see a woman atop a red motorcycle, watching men shoot each other as jets fly overhead. We see a man on a black motorcycle ride past refugee camps full of starving people as bombs go off in the distance. Then we see a nuclear bomb go off next to the camp. Through the dust and rubble a man in a trench coat and hood rides through on a pale horse.
We are told that when people disappeared, the four horsemen came, and the world tore itself apart. And once most of humanity was dead, the rest survived huddled in underground bunkers or isolated communities. Waiting out the nuclear winter, but humans endured.
Then the possessions began.
We see a family, two kids and two parents, they're are starved and hungry, clearly stressed, the mother tries to encourage the others to pray, but the father angrily refuses, claiming god left them behind. After dinner, the mother is washing dishes, when she hears noises coming from the living room, she goes in, and sees he's husband standing in the ceiling, horrified, she stumbles back, and falls over a pale arm, that we know is from the children, the father turns his head 180 degree to see her, his eyes black.
We are told that those few who have survived the coming of the demons, now are forced to run and hide, trying desperately to find sanctuary, and praying that the horrors will end.
We cut to man and woman in what is clearly handmade versions of modern clothes, they drive a wagon up a highway pulled by donkeys, in the back is an old man. As they ride we hear them talk to one another, the woman is a Hispanic ex illegal migrant called Maria, the man used to be a factory worker from New York, named Joe, the man in the back of the wagon is his father, Jake, suffering from diabetes, they have been forced to leave their old community. Partly due to them not being willing to provide medicine to an 'old man close to death' and partly due to tensions caused when Maria grew pregnant while Joe was out on a 'long raid' for food and medicine, even though she swears she didn't cheat on her husband.
We see the three's relationship with each other. Maria loves Jake like her own father, he believes her about being faithful to Joe, which causes tensions with his son. Joe is angry at both of them, he loves his father but views both him and Maria as being responsible for having to leave their community.
One night while sitting around the campfire, Joe explodes at them both, Maria for cheating on him, Jake for taking her side and 'being a burden'. He storms off into the night.
After he leaves, Jake and Maria have a talk, where she swears she never cheated on Joe, and starts to have a breakdown from the stress of their situation. Jake begins to comfort her, then freezes, telling her not to panic. In the corner of his eye he's spotted a figure walking towards them.
They both grab their guns and order the man to stop. He does so, acting polite and claiming he's a survivor from a community that was overrun, we can't see his face but he acts and speaks totally normal. Jake begins to lower her guard, but then Maria demands he step out into the light so they can see his eyes.
The figure instead charges at them, being one of the possessed.
They shoot him repeatedly but he doesn't go down, knocking Jake to the side and pinning down Maria, claiming he will kill the child. He doesn't stop even when Jake shoots him again and again. Another figure appears and hacks the man's head off with a machete, although his head keeps speaking, saying that Maria's baby is going to die, and that it is 'only the first'.
The new figure introduces himself as Micheal. He looks Arabic or Indian, is extremely heavily armed and tattooed with both Arabic and Latin wording. Joe turns up having heard the trouble and immediately apologises to Maria and Jake, though not before making Michael show him his eyes.
The four pack up early and leave, Micheal riding on a horse.
They come across a small household of people, two brothers, two wives and a child belonging to one of the couples. They are offered a place to stay for the night, Maria convinces Joe and Michael who think they should keep moving.
Micheal orders Jake to keep their stuff on the wagon, even as they move it to the families barn.
The night goes well, Maria notices Micheal didn't come in to sleep, spending his time watching over the property. He refuses Joe when he tries to convince Micheal to come inside for breakfast, but Maria convinces him.
While having breakfast the family begin to pray, they welcome Micheal to pray to 'Allah, or whoever', Micheal proceeds to pray in a language they don't understand, but one of the husbands points out isn't Arabic. Before anyone can interrogate Micheal however, one of the families alarms goes off. The possessed are coming.
One brother goes to get the boat ready, the rest of the family begins packing, Jake goes to get the cart ready, Maria ignores Joe and Micheal as she goes to help the family pack. Unfortunately they are still in the house when the Possessed Attack.
Bursting down the doors, Joe and Maria are guided out by Micheal, Maria forced by Micheal to abandon a child to die, her seeing him dragged away by the possessed.
They get to the cart, Micheal gunning down Possessed as they attempt to drive away, unfortunately they cannot outrun the Possessed as more and more pour over a hill towards them, Jake is dragged off the cart and torn to pieces, Micheal leaps off the cart to buy Maria and Joe time. The two managing to get to the boat where the last husband realises his family is dead and breaks down, killing himself, Maria and Joe barely figuring out how to get the boat started before the possessed reach the river.
The two carry on away from the horde of possessed. Devastated by the loss of so many people, Joe comforting his pregnant wife, their tensions forgotten in their grief and horror.
They arrive at a walled community just downriver that the family has told them about. They are refused entry initially, until Maria reveals she is pregnant which convinces the group to let them in. The walled town is run by a blind ex pastor, Father Andy Heist, who claims they have no rooms for them, but allows them to sleep in one families barn temporarily. Though he dismisses the threat of a horde considering their walls and isolated location.
The next day Michael appears at the gate. Father Heist is dubious due to hearing how he leapt out to fight a horde, but Maria convinced the town by pointing out his eyes are normal. Micheal is allowed in, and Joe thanks him profusely for helping, only to be ignored as Micheal checks over Maria and the baby. Maria asks Micheal to help convince the town of the dangers of the horde, but Micheal says it doesn't matter to him. Instead claiming they have to leave, Maria, recalling how he made her abandon the child, believes he is obsessed with her or her baby, and claims she doesn't want him near her. Micheal, pressured by Joe, leaves her alone.
Later that night Maria awakens from nightmares, where she tried to save the child and died too. She and Joe have a conversation about Micheal, where Joe admits he would've done the same thing and left the child. Maria goes for a walk, she sees Micheal checking over his weapons, and they talk.
Maria asks why god would make them suffer so much, yes they did bad things, but did they deserve to live in a world like this? Micheal asks what she did before the Rapture, and she admits she was a stripper who helped smuggle drugs. Jake was a soldier who 'did things' at war. Joe saw her get hit during an argument with a dealer, and came to her rescue, killing the man in the process, worried her drugs would be found, she convinced Joe to hide the body instead of going to the authorities by seducing him, but fell in love with him before the rapture.
Micheal talks about Adam and Eve, relating Maria and Joe to them, talking about how Eve tempted Adam to sin, and their sin caused the suffering of humanity for centuries, but that god loves his children, and sent his only son, Jesus, to end their suffering. Maria asks if he's Christian or Muslim, Micheal says there's truth in everything, and that he believes in god and man, and that should be enough. Maria asks what's Michael's sin was, why he's in earth still, Micheal replies that his sin was 'love'.
On the walls two town guards share a smoke, suddenly one of them hears a noise, he uses a lantern to shine a light down, seeing a horde of possessed looking up from the base of the wall at him.
Maria and Micheal's conversation is interrupted by the alarm being sounded, the people of the town rush to the wall to defend it, desperately trying to fight off the possessed climbing the walls. The defenders are interrupted, when the horde parts and a man on a white motorcycle rides up to the town, the defenders begin to keel over, boils forming and blood pouring from their eyes, suddenly Micheal appears, unaffected by the rider and throws a spear, impaling the rider, he raises a white flag as the sun rises and the possessed retreat, he plants the flag over the town gate, and claims the possessed will not cross as long as the banner hangs there.
The town questions who he is, Micheal reveals he is the Archangel Michael, sent to guard Maria, but refuses to answer why, only stating that he's here to keep her alive. Father Heist grows angry, calling him a blasphemer, Micheal asks Maria to hold her hands over the ex priests eyes, which cures his blindness. Convinced and believing Maria is a saint, the town agrees to protect her. Joe becomes concerned, as Micheal still isn't telling them the full story.
As days pass the Father reopens the church and tries to pressure Maria into giving a sermon, becoming fanatical towards her, with Joe having to defend her from the increasingly obsessive townspeople, noting Micheal isn't discouraging this.
Micheal warns Maria that she will need to flee the town soon, and that the townspeople will make good a good distraction which horrifies her and convinced her to think about fleeing the town. Joe convinced her it would be suicide, and takes her to the town storage to get some food.
Outside the horde of possessed opens again, the town guard raises their guns as a woman on a red motorcycle pulls up, they turn and shoot one another as she opens the gate, the possessed laughing as they watch her enter the town.
Guided to the food storage by a young woman, Maria and Joe find the food rotted, and a man leaning on a black motorcycle inside. He calls himself 'Famine' and causes the female guide to starve to death in front of the couples eyes. When he tries this on Joe, Maria clutches him, and he frowns as his powers don't work. The two flee, those who try to stop famine starving to death in seconds as he pursues.
The woman on the red motorcycle strolls through the town, making those who try to stop her kill each other. The Father leads a congregation and proclaims he will stop her with gods power, she makes him and his congregation kill each other in a wild fury.
As Famine corners Maria and Joe, Joe's guns not killing him, Micheal appears and kills him with a sword. He tries to get the couple to run with him and leave the town as the possessed are distracted, but Maria begs him to help the town upon seeing the destruction the woman on the red motorcycle is causing. Micheal confronts her, the woman beginning to introduce herself as war, only for Micheal to claim he doesn't care, beginning a sword fight that ends with War dead and Micheal wounded.
The towns tries to recover as Maria tends to Michael's wounds and Joe organises the defences. Micheal admits it won't matter, as death is coming for them all, Maria needs to leave.
Micheal, pressured by Maria, admits that he is here for her child, who is the second son of god, who's birth will herald gods forgiveness of the surviving humans, and allow humanity to banish the forces of hell once more and reclaim the earth. Micheal convinced god to do this, for he loves humankind for what it could be, for this, he was sent down in mortal form to guard the child. Maria notes how little he cared about all those he left to die, Micheal admits he loves what mankind could be, not always what it is.
Joe sends the women and children to barricade themselves into the church, including Maria, as he prepares to defend the town, which will be attacked by the horde when Micheal dies and the power of his banner fades.
Micheal asks Joe if he will raise Maria's child with love, and Joe admits he was always going to, even when he thought she had cheated, because the baby would be part her, Micheal, bleeding out, tells Joe he will be a great father, and he and Maria are the kind of people who make mankind 'worth it' despite their pasts.
Outside the gates the horde splits one last time as a rider on a pale horse comes towards the gate.
Mounting a horse of his own, Micheal rides out to meet Death, the final horseman, trying to buy time for Maria, who has gone into labour, the baby is coming.
Death admits that he's never reaped and Archangel before, and notes that, no matter which of them die here, it doesn't matter, as the horsemen are concepts, they will exist as long as mankind does. Micheal ignores him, and despite being wounded, rides out to fight Death, eventually scoring a mutual kill.
With Micheal's death the banner loses its power, falling to the ground, and the possessed flood in, the towns defenders, led by Joe, desperately trying to hold them back.
In the boarded up church one of the possessed climb in through the roof, the women panicking as it kills them and advances towards Maria. As it prepares to kill her and the few living defenders outside get overrun, the baby is finally born. It's cries cause the possessed to collapse, shrinking in pain.
Above the church a star appears, and coming down from the starlight is Micheal, now with wings, and six other angels, the possessed flee or die as the angels surround the church and the defenders.
The baby, who Maria names Jacob, after Jake, is placed in a bed of straw at the base of the church pulpit, while the seven archangels sing in enochian as they bow before Gods second son. Micheal tells Joe to raise the boy well, and thanks Maria for being a good person, he states that Jacob will drive the demons back to hell, but warns that 'he will suffer as only his elder brother has'. Maria says she will be with him until the end, and thanks Micheal, who takes flight back to heaven with the other archangels, leaving the future in the hands of the towns survivors.
