Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

... Dear heck, I don't normally care about builds that much, but right now, I actually want to get an attack art just so we can stop having this argument over it.

We aren't looking at a situation where a great set of weapons fell into our lap, and we are turning them down because they aren't a perfect fit. We are dealing with a case where we can but an addition weapon, at full price, all without knowing what our attack art is likely to proc off of. I'm saying that is silly, in much the same way that buying expensive drugs to help e.g. Fire art cultivation right now would be silly; we can do it after picking up the art without risking the benefit we bought not working with the art we choose.
Or we can just get a new Art to work with the new weapon since as long as the art uses the same meridians and elements the equipped Arts can be switched "on the fly".

We need an instrument. The instrument does not NEED to use hands, as long as it can play a range of sounds wide enough to encompass the melody. Wearing different sized bells works just fine for instance, but requires more freedom of movement to keep playing unless you could, I dunno, control the wind?
Any reason why simply whistling or singing don't work?

. . . Well, the standard lizard does have that tail-regrowth thing, so this spirit lizard Kohatu just takes it to the extreme that its corpse also regenerates?

I'd explain why doing that is inefficient, but I don't have to since I'm pretty sure you'd never get something like that through a vote anyways.

Edit: pretty sure they can't be switched mid-event.

Honestly, there doesn't seem to be any real barrier to largely hands-free option like a drum on the hip beyond sentiment for the flute Ling Qi's mom gave her and the very modest cost. We haven't bought a 'battleflute ' and one die of Expression lost for using a non-woodwind is nothing.

Edit: Wow, didn't know elements could switch so easily between Arts. That's big. No wonder people tend to stick to a couple elements rather than diversifying.

Because whacking someone with it will still interrupt FVM and coupled with the low damage it would deal it's pointless

Hence why I'm asking why we can't do FVM via singing or whistling, neither of which would prevent us from using our hands. This seems like such an obvious thing to me I was rather certain it must've already been brought up in the thread and shut down by @yrsillar.
Flute looks really cool?

We should totally drop a couple dozen red stones for a simple +Expression bonus.
Flute might look cool, but it's arguably the cause for the whole Catch-22 going on; need/want better offensive capabilities, but better offensive capabilities generally require the usage of hands, while the hands are occupied playing the flute for FVM.

Hence, if that can be avoided, it'd solve a lot of problems. Though of course the flute should continue to be used whenever possible, to present a false weakpoint people can target.

Well beside flutes being kinda cool and fitting with the genre. There is as said the sentimental part of it being the last thing Ling Qi still has from her mother. Looking at it from a character perspective dropping the flute for something more "effective" sends a massage about the character, one that I really would like to avoid.

I will admit, it's pretty dirty pool to call people out for fearmongering and then turn around and literally suggest one of the things they've feared.

Like, it's one thing to pass up an attacking art one more turn, we'll probably keep unless Ji Rong breaks out early and decides to roll us for change, but it's another thing entirely to literally go "Well let's just get a shitty attack art", that smacks of "Well fuck you for having a different opinion of me, so I'm going to mock you".

I wasn't saying that out of despite what some people claimed. I was saying that because it had already been suggested. I was reporting the news, in other words.

Which is why the fearmongering claims really annoy me.

Eh, FVM lasting 4 rounds is plenty to finish a fight with real weapons.

Besides, you might run into the same problem as enchanting weapons. A flute is probably the Mountain Guai of instruments. Less efficient the more you enhance it.

Anyway, let's talk about more serious things.

After a lot of talk and consideration, as well as re-reading the quest many, many times, I have finally understood the secret underlying rule @yrsillar made his quest around. It can be summed up as "The Taller you are, The Nicer you are".

Young, chibi and small Ling Qi was an ass. She got better as she got taller, and recently after her latest growth spurt she is getting even better. Proof if I ever saw one. Elder Zhou is a tall, splendid man who does not mind showing his glorious abs, and give free Elixir to the whole of his class. Elder Su is smaller, and she only gives rewards to her favorites. Cai Renxiang is tall and glorious, fair and noble. Sun Liling, smaller, is a bit of a bitch that destroy people's houses.

The interesting bit is thus: Gan Guangli has a trait that gives him 'Tallest in the room = yes'. Does this mean he is merely always the nicest person in the room, or does it mean he has achieved infinite niceness? I think this is a real question that necessitate science (and homecooked meals).

IIRC it's storing the flute and THEN retrieving it that's time-consuming. It might be possible to just attach a ribbon or something to the flute so Ling Qi can 'drop' it and draw a weapon quickly.
