Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

To achieve the same goal.
Some people's suggestions that not showing lenience makes her just as bad as her mother is silly. Not saying it's your claim, but it keeps coming up. There is a vast spectrum of punishment that is highly uncomfortable and yet does not even begin to encroach on her mother's territory.
EDIT: You know what, forget I said anything. Arguing about what the GM is going to write after the vote is closed is one of the most pointless and time wasting activities possible, not much better than all the doomsaying and whining. The update will be posted and that will be that. The rest of this is a waste of time.

The QM giving us votes like this in the first place is signalling that he wants us to decide now. It doesn't work like that. Relitigating things like this in a months time is terrible for quests, and no-one wants that.
Arguably, this vote at all was a relitigation of our decision to do Fu Xian's favors. Circumstances change and it is natural for people to respond to them. Reading too much into QM intentions is a dangerous and maddening pastime.

Besides, yrsillar made a post specifically addressing this issue, and more recently above certainly seems to be suggesting that that kind of interpretation of "signalling" is off base.

And yet this vote was not "do we confess now? All the debate was over "do we confess?"

Framing matters. This wasn't a minor sitting around for us to choose when to do it. This was a decision we were being forced to decide right now.

If it wasn't supposed to be treated like this, it shouldn't have been presented in this way.

@yrsillar you are way, way, way too nice to us. Don't be discouraged by people being invested and loving your writing. The problem is that organically Ling Qi needed to decide about her guilt now, but that also sort of double-timed on the CRX vassalage vote. Given we are hoping to get to bronze next week, this couldn't be helped to be read as basically a prelude to that vote, but it doesn't change that this was a decision Ling Qi needed to come to term NOW.....

Though that didn't mean she needed to talk now, even if she decided to talk.

Now I'm curious. What quest was "stab own heart for power" in? I kinda want to see what the consequences of that was.

But we weren't though. People said that not telling her would sink any hopes of a friendship with Cai but yrs said otherwise. It was also said that people would be against attempts to tell her later or befriend her if we lie here but that's personal choice rather than the votes insistance. Not sure how yrs could've made it any more clear.
I'll fix those.

And yeah just because you keep mum now doesn;t mean that there won't be developments that lead to further character development between the two of them later.

The subvote and non subvote will be counted together.

Say are there any in-jokes that appear within the cultivating community that everyone knows about and pokes fun at the people involved?

Like that guy who thought it was a good idea to cultivate within a particularly large spirit beast but got 'ejected'. Or that girl who mistook a higher-tiered cultivator shape shifter for a pet and tried to bring him to a vet for sterilisation. Cautionary tales of stupidity.

Or maybe an Elder's derp face, drawn and archived for meme purposes.

Cai Vassalage reallt didn't factor into this vote at all for me. It's sometimes fun to speculate about what Ling Qi could do after two years in the Sect, but ultimately, my time horizon for making any decisions end right about the end of year tournament. Partly it's because circumstances, social connections, even the game system will change afterwards, but also, while I love @yrsillar's writing and am amazed at the consistency of updates, I've been burned in the past for planning too far ahead in quests.

So for me, joining up with Cai comes down to:

1. Will she give us resources before the tournament? (probably, depending on the how the rest of the conversation goes)
2. Is she fun to hang out with? (ehhhh)

Honestly, while I'm certain we're going to be having to take actions and pay reparations for what we did, I seriously doubt they're going to be beyond what we can carry. At worst, it'll be a marginal reduction in how much Cultivating we can do. (Something like a Month of our White Room access surrendered to the victims, plus putting us to work at helping them collect replacement materials would be entirely reasonable, as well as entirely bearable--as once we finish breaking through, our big bottleneck is going to be mastering our Domain and developing our Arts to the Green level. None of which the White Room helps for).

What irritates me is the undercurrent that Renxiang really is Lawful Stupid, and the implications that "Oh you didn't take the route I wanted you to so everything's going to crash and burn".

I mean, yeah, if that turns out to be correct, and Renxiang really is a Justice Terminator who takes the most brutal and direct approach to solve her problems even when she doesn't have to, then I'd much rather learn this now when we've made a comparably minor error in judgement during a grey area between being legally recognized as an adult and still being a child, because it'd mean she really is a disappointing parody of a human being, who can only mechanistically respond to injustice with perfectly equal penalty, rather than try to build things up again like a good ruler would.

Which goes against my take on her, which is that despite Shenhua's best efforts to turn Renxiang into a perfect doll to carry on her work so she can focus on the things she actually wants to do, that Renxiang still is human, and actually has human wants and needs--chief among them companionship, even if she has little idea what that actually means at this juncture because she's never been allowed it in the past.

But anyway, we shouldn't be salting at each other any more. One way or another, we're going to get an answer. I'd like to think having a little faith isn't going to destroy everything we hope for--especially since this coming up means that this is literally the least bad the consequences are ever going to be.

Because if she's going to respond to this--a confession of guilt in confidence and a willingness to make reparations--with a public spectacle. When she has not yet been made an unwitting collaborator... Then she might literally have murdered us if it comes out afterwards.

I think people are plenty justified to feel a bit upset at what has occurred, because many people don't share your view that the punishment will either be a slap on the wrist or a blessing in disguise if it really does kick us in the teeth.

Consider the contingent that want to make a career in the sect. They're seeing this as possibly presenting a stumbling block in our hectic schedule before the tournament kicks off, which could conceivably jeopardize their whole route of employment if the worst fears about being locked up like Ji Rong were to be true. The argument against that has been that he was kind of a dick and didn't protect himself by proclaiming innocence while Ling Qi is more socially savvy, but I don't know if that can fly when you consider that this is Ling Qi admitting it herself and leaving no way for herself to wriggle out of her blame aside from further blasting ties with Fu Xiang. I guess people are OK with that, we already have folks saying that this is his fault and that he deserves it.

That sort of interesting gratitude to the guy responsible for us retaining the tools that allowed us to fly here and even have this conversation with Cai by allowing Qi to escape the Princess presents another problem. Anyone who liked the guy now has to deal the fact that we've betrayed him and given the paranoia of shady people will probably not be on any sort of path to friendship with him in a hurry. Conveniently, we've also given this powerful information broker a huge bag of our money and set him to contact our worst enemy who tried to poison Zhengui. On top of all that, we're being told not to worry about this all because his worst weapon against us was apparently the chance to blackmail us to Cai (why he would want to do this and make enemies of all parties is unclear) and now that that's gone he's somehow toothless.

It's OK for some of us to be a little upset about paths we would have liked to take closing off. Heads will cool with time, but dragging up the arguments for why you think we are wrong again doesn't speed the process.

Edit: Uh oh.

Searching all pages since the update, six votes were sockpuppets, which if accounted for does swap the outcome of the vote.
It swung the vote into keeping silent.

Oh for fuck's sake.

I didn't want to win this way. Even if I think keeping our mouth shut is a very bad decision for anything but "Fuck the Cai Route at all costs"

ugh.

Guess I'm going to have to resign myself to the Renxiang Route being closed forever, because my own fucking side can't justify it without cheating.

Because even if we can admit to it later, it's going to come after we've already benefited from the corruption in truth, rather than just in potential. Which means that there's going to be no way to rally enough of a voting bloc to take the chance now when the risk is literally as limited as it's ever going to be. Because if people are convinced she'll publically destroy us because of "Justice" if we admit to it. Then that same logic will be used to point out "But she'll fucking murder us for making her an unwitting accessory, so we can't join her ever"

Congratulations Never Cai, you won because my own side can't be trusted. If we can't vote to trust her when the consequences are going to be as light as they'll ever be, there's no fucking way people will ever vote to permanently link up with her when we've now effectively used her in a way she'd never appreciate.

Disappointing as fuck, but I guess a complex character who has flaws is just too daunting a prospect to want to get to know unless they're First Girl. That, or yrsillar's just been too good at portraying her as a terminator without a heart for people to be willing to have faith in her.

So, yeah, I guess that's that then. Future's fixed and in stone. Disappointing, but the honest voters have spoken, and the losers just have to deal with it.

Honestly I can't help but laugh at the people so obsessed as to go to such lengths

If they cared so much as to take the time to make sock puppets they could've found the time to try and sway the vote through honest methods

Like...what, did they think that they wouldn't get caught or something?

That's just dumb lol

I admittedly didn't have time to get into these arguments and missed my chance to vote, but I don't see how keeping our mouth shut really pushes a non-Cai route. We just let this fade into the past and not mention it again and eventually it will be a minor misstep made by children.

Because the same arguments that justified keeping our mouth shut will be dragged out again when the choice comes along. Except they'll actually be genuinely legitimate because these will come after Renxiang has been made effectively complicit in the crime.

And if they're convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that she'd destroy us for what we've already done. Then the logic continues that she would literally murder us for making her complicit.

And ultimately, they won--by a sizable margin too if it's true that the victory for confessing was generated by fucking sockpuppets. If they won here when the consequences were literally as light as they could possibly be, then they can ride that into completely crushing any possibility of going that way, by leveraging the fear of discovery if we sign on with her.

Because there's no such thing as a perfect crime. And the only real defense in that case is distance.
