Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

Here is what the current faction breakdown of top cultivators and it is definitely not stable. I'm hoping we can solidify our allies into Meizhen's group early on and have it carry forward to when we have to deal with Sun Liling and Kang at the very least. However that only works if we're willing to take actions to keep these people our allies because this list can easily end with only Ling Qi and Meizhen against Kang Zihao, Sun Liling, Lu Feng, and the rest of their mooks.

Prospective Meizhen Faction
· Ling Qi - Ally
· Han Jian – Ally to Ling Qi
· Xiulan – Ally to Ling Qi
· Han Fang – Ally to Han Jian
· Huang Da – Ling Qi's Stalker

Meizhen's Enemies
· Kang Zihao – Rival powerlevel to Meizhen | Hates the Bai family | Has a large mook pool to recruit from
· Sun Liling – Rival powerlevel to Meizhen | Rival to the Bai House
· Lu Feng - Sun Liling's second

Neutral
· Cai Renxiang
· Gan Guangli
· Ji Rong
· Xuan

Yeah, seems pretty accurate. I'm trying to pull Xiulan into Meizhen's orbit a little. I figure once we tie some of them together, the alliance can self-maintain since they're already allies/friends without us. But we can only spend so many actions on this whether it works or not.

I imagine that there will be a few ways to catch an Elder's attention before the end of the year tourney, like a special job or competition for that Elder's interests. It wouldn't be all that radical for Inner Sectship to be dangled for any clear number ones in the group, so that they don't just stomp the tourney.

Good point - there might be a way for an Elder to 'promote' a particularly desirable disciple early, either for meritorious deeds for the sect or for sheer talent/catching an Elder's eye. For example, I could see someone who hits peak Yellow/Silver (or even breaks through in one or the other) being moved (or guaranteed a move outside the tournament structure) to give them early access to Genesis so their cultivation doesn't stall.

We can't get Genesis until we are a inner sect disciple, and for that we need to wait until the end of a year and participate in a tournament where we can expect at least 5 Green. We have to be in the Top 8.

I'd be quite surprised if more than 4 of competitors have hit Green by the end of the year (the big three and Ji Rong). Getting there is *hard*, especially if your talent is lower than Ling Qi or Ji Rong's - even if you've got expensive medicines. And then you need to succeed in the breakthrough rolls (three of 'em). Remember that Ling Qi's speed has been insane from the perspective of those around her - and typically cultivation slows dramatically as the ranks go up.

As for "competing with Greens"... to be honest, I would expect Late Yellow/Late Silver Ling Qi to do quite well against single-path focusers. Especially with some well-mastered combat and cultivation arts to back her up.

Suyin and Ling will hate us forever if we don't give them a chance to profit from this.

Wut.

How the hell did you arrive there? "Because Ling Qi didn't convince them to sell access to their unique advantage over all the others, they'll hate her?" Are you kidding?

They're twitchy, almost paranoid about people they don't know. They really don't want to give possible competitors a leg up, and are probably quite afraid of other people kicking them off the place. Their interest in trying to 'sell' the location is probably less than nil.

Move it around a bit - do you think Ling Qi should sell the vent's location to her competitors? Kang Zihao would be happy to pay some stones up front for the location, I'm sure...

EDIT: And why are people wanting Ling Qi to try and establish a faction for Bai? And including random nobles just because Ling Qi has a good impression of them?

Nobles aren't going to make lasting alliances with other nobles without careful consideration. Han Jian is not going to become Bai's follower - ever. And he's going to be wary of making any kind of alliance, and perhaps would be quite unwilling to interact with her at all. He's got his family to think of.

Plus, he's already got his own faction - why would he 'subordinate' it to someone else? And how would you think Fan Yu or the rest would take it? Gu seems to tolerate Bai... for Ling's sake. Han's view is likely to be similar. The central point is not Bai or Han, but Ling Qi herself. And neither is likely to become her follower.

No, if there's a "Bai faction", it'll be Ling Qi, Li Suyin and Su Ling. And probably nobody else. Maybe Ji Rong, depending on how he views Bai, Ling, Li and Su and how they view him over the next few months.

Wow, yeah, I don't see Bai Meizhen as having Han Jian in 'her faction' anytime soon. Honestly I think if she moved to do that it would make Cai Renxiang pretty upset, as it would basically be taking away her position as Queen of the Hill. Han Jian may not seem it, but he's easily important enough to be his own faction, trying to make him subordinate to Bai Meizhen is a really dangerous and potentially insulting idea. We'd be better off trying to sway one of the 'neutrals'- in particular Ji Rong, although whether that's a politically viable idea is above our pay grade really. This is pretty clearly how it is:

Cai Renxiang's faction:
Gan Guangli (second)

Bai Meizhen's faction:
Ling Qi (second)
Su Ling? (ally)
Li Suyin (ally)

Han Jian's faction:
Gu Xiulan (second)
Han Fang
Fan Yu

Sun Liling's faction (enemy faction):
Lu Feng (second)

Kang Zihao's faction (enemy faction):
unknown boy
unknown boy

Neutrals who can join anyone:
Ji Rong
'Sir Xuan'
Huang Da (potentially influential enough to be his own faction but too creepy to have one)

Note that while they are both Snekgirl's enemies Kang Zihao and Sun Liling really don't seem like natural allies- he's frankly too cowardly and overtly political to appeal to her.

AND also note that Cai Renxiang is pretty much obligated to knock any of the others down a notch or five if they look to be gaining more influence than her in her own backyard- I don't think she crushed Kang Zihao solely out of the goodness of her heart. It'd be nice to have Han Jian as Meizhen's close ally, but also dangerous.

In terms of etiquette, it's probably acceptable if somewhat humiliating for other factions to ally themselves to Cai Renxiang in a way that might be seen as subordination. Allying with any other faction is a very threatening move likely to create strange bedfellows as the need arises to put you down.

Hmmm, I'm not sold on the value of getting Xiulan to be an ally of Meizhen. Help them become friends, sure, but an alliance between them is going to be pretty far fetched. We are in the unique position where we are the only ones who can speak for us and we have no one else above us who might want to control our actions. The other nobles don't have that privilege because every alliance that is made is made with their respective houses as well. As such, since Xiulan's house owes its allegiance to the Han house, I'm not sure that Xiulan would be able to create a formal alliance with Meizhen. Also, if push comes to shove, Xiulan would fight against Meizhen should the rest of her group fight Meizhen as well. I'm not sure where that would come up, but it is a possibility that shouldn't be ignored.

That is circular logic.
Want to protect them = be their allies
You want them to be allies so they would want to be their allies?

And again. Jian's group does not WANT to be their allies. So, how exactly do you think we can overcome this dislike?
Uh no the only people who actually both dislike them and show it (Han Fang kept his wariness to himself) are Fan Yu and Gu Xiulan and Xiulan promised to stop being a bitch to Suyin.

Even if she still acts territorial against Su Ling well so? Conflict is good for growth and the odds of it actually escalating into a full-on grudge are pretty minuscule, a bitchy rivalry at the most IMO.

1. Can Jian's group afford this?
2. Can they be trusted to regularly pay such huge sums to people they already dislike instead of doing something underhanded... or simply not paying and using it on the sly once they have acquired the info?
3. If they can't afford it, how upset would they be with us? enough to spy to try to acquire the location anyways?

I am sure Jian is a really nice guy.
But at the end of the day he still needs to listen to his team, some of which are not so nice and probably going to push the idea of just using the vent without paying.

The safest thing, I think, would be to arrange a lump sum payment. Of course this also suffers from risk of lu and su being robbed due to having too much wealth with them

I am not saying it is entirely off the table. But it is not as simple and easy as some people make it out to be.
We need to find out exactly how rich Jian's team is. We need to work a bit more getting the groups to trust each other.
This is a long term project at best, and rushing it would explode in our face
1. Yes of course they can, High Nobles remember? Plus all they have to do if they're short is go mug someone else. Or maybe be given a discount by Li Suyin and Su Ling if they agree to help train them or share a helpful technique or talisman.

2&3 if they try anything we lay down the law and kick their ass. Our crowd control, Su Ling's illusions/foxfire and Venom Suyin's magical murder hand of FUCK YOUR INTERNALS(!) can take em, plus given our improved relationship with her Meizhen would probably take exception to them trying anything and we specifically brought her in as a "big stick" to prevent this kind of situation from occurring.

I think they will only go so far if they get desperate and have people they hate getting what they need being thrown in their face every day. Basically, I think Han Jian is more or less a good guy, Gu Xiulan is a bitch but our bitch, Han Fang is a quite muscly type that's apparently ambitious and dislikes halfhumans, and Fan Yu a prick.

That's OK, they can be good friends and allies, but that doesn't mean you always trust those.

As for needing introductory arts, it's probably me saying this, but we know at least EPC doesn't work like that. It might be only for cultivation arts, but it's also possible we might find some great arts in level 3 that don't have analogues in lower floors. And yes, Yellow is supposed to take a long while, hence why I think the bonus are harder to get.

This is also why I am whining so much about people going from an average of 5cultivation/1social to more than 2social/4cultivation :(
...........................The point of sharing the vent is to prevent them from getting that desperate. Han Jian and co without the vent and our wilderness buddies outpacing them without us even attempting to get them to befriend each other are far more likely to do something desperate since their position will be even more tenuous and unstable and Suyin and Su Ling will be far easier to mark as "other" in their minds.
*Shrugs* Frankly, I think people are overlooking something important when it comes to Han Jian.

Han Jian and Bai Meizhen are separate factions and belonging to one means you're not in the other. You may be a good friend of someone in Han Jian's faction, you may be a welcome guest at their training, but if your ultimate loyalty is to Snekgirl then Han Jian really has no reason to treat you like one of his own- because you're not his own, you're Snekgirl's.

Ling Qi might not have officially gone to that meeting as Snekgirl's 'second' but she made no objection when she was characterized that way. As far as Han Jian and company are concerned, that's what Ling Qi is- Bai Meizhen's second.

We may have had an idea that we'd be one of Han Jian's subordinates in the distant future but at this point it's just not something he regards as realistic- not only are we too talented, our loyalties are too suspect. We 'Snekgirl maid/spy' now. That's not the end of the world where he's concerned, and we can still be a valuable contact and a good friend of one of his most loyal and resourceful subordinates, but any deal we propose will almost definitely be viewed in that context.

Because of that, I don't see the vent as a secret we'd be expected to share- friendship aside, Snekgirl is the strongest and most politically powerful person who knows about it and from a certain point of view Su Ling and Li Suyin are probably Bai's lackeys. We'd no more be expected to share knowledge of the vent than we'd be expected to bring him Meizhen''s tea.
Orrrr better idea Han Jian's faction just joins Snekgirl's since she's stronger and together we completely stomp them in terms of power. Meizhen desperately needs allies too so we should at least try to do this, if it blows up we just kick their asses.

Also you still haven't given any reason not to at least ask Li Suyin and Su Ling about it. They might actually enjoy a chance to not be dirt poor and struggling to catch up to the nobles due to lacking all those Spirit Stones and Cultivation drugs and Talismans from the market.

As regards to Li Suyin and Su Ling- I'd consider them both likely shoo-ins for a production entrance to the Inner Sect. Su Ling is acquiring an expertise at literally hunting cultivation ingredients and she seems to have some inborn advantages that make her uniquely suited for that role- you can bet that this is regarded just as highly as the skill to mix up those ingredients by the higher-ups. They can mix things up themselves after all, delegating the job of trekking through the wilderness to find animals and plants is a rather more tedious proposition so a disciple who's good at that is a convenience that's hard to turn down. Li Suyin's healing ability isn't exactly 'production' per se, but she seemed to be something of a teacher's pet for Elder Su and her family art is obviously valuable.
Which is just another reason why the "Sharing the Vent with Han Jian's group will fail due to limited spots in the tournament" argument is bad, they're competing in two entirely different tracks and so long as that's known there shouldn't be any desperate sabotage.

No we ask them if they would consider allowing Han Jian's group to use the vent and then mention that they don't have to do it for free as the Vent is incredibly valuable and that if they charge for it they could get a ton of Spirit Stones and use that to help their Cultivation since unlike Nobles they don't have access to an allowance and care packages full of talismans and ALL THE DRUGS!

We specifically brought Meizhen in to prevent people from kicking them out anyway.

We're establishing a faction for Meizhen because she's desperately lacking in allies thanks to her reputation and we need all the help we can get?

At this point, those in favor of "convincing Li Suyin and Su Ling to sell the vent's location" have convinced me; it's most definitely to be not done. The idea that it'll lead to some big happy faction family is, if you'll pardon me, downright ludicrous. Ling Qi isn't charismatic enough to pull everyone involved behind her - and that's the only person involved who would have a (theoretical) chance.

Now, there's another possibility that's similar - Ling Qi, Li Suyin and Su Ling go hunting for other spots and 'sell' the location of lesser prizes to others who aren't outright hostile (and, ideally, aren't the high-end competitors). And if they find a better (or equivalent) vent then they sell the location of the current one and use the new, at least more secret if not better, one for themselves.

Faction-wise, Meizhen acknowledged Xiulan's family politically, and in respect possibly Han Jian's as well, but the Bais are looking for concession.

On the other hand though, would the families of Han Jian & co. would be interested in an understanding with the Bai?
Certainly, they seems like they were in a rough place, and sounds like they still are. But would a connection with the Bai clan improve their lot, or worsen it?

If they are already at wits' end or that other regions simply jeered on them, then a connection to the Bai clan would perhaps be something that Han Jian's faction would greatly favor.

Yea, we are the matriarch of the cultivator clan Ling (population: 1).
As such we can freely ally with people.

I am sure that the Han and Gu clans already have a policy in place regarding clan Bai. And considering the empress dislikes them, chances are the policy is NOT alliance.

Now, they might individually become friends without a care for their clan.
But it would be an uphill battle.

To clarify, the leading vote does not have Ling Qi sell the vent. It specifies that she gets no profit from it. In the vote, Ling Qi asks if Suyin and Ling would be interested in giving access to our other friends in exchange for resources.

Dramatis Personae
Cast

Bai Meizhen (Early Green/Bronze)
She is our reticent noble housemate whose clan is currently at odds with the Empress. Their reputation and aura have led to the white haired scion being feared and ostracised and to us being her first, and only, friend. She has been our most stalwart supporter at the sect. Meizhen has great pride in her clan and strives to live up to their expectations; her attachment to Ling Qi has troubled her attempts to maintain the emotional discipline her clan are known for. Descended from a Great Snake, her ancestry can be seen in her diet and golden serpentine eyes. Her known family include her bound spirit and cousin, Cui; her deceased mother; her father, who she has little respect for, is unable to withstand the Bai aura and was brought into the clan for financial reasons; and her grandfather and aunt who she greatly respects but has rarely talked to outside of training. She, or at least her clan, specialise in Water, Dark and Yin Wood qi.

Li Suyin (Mid Yellow/Late Gold)
A girl with short light blue hair and an eye patch that covers the right side of her face. We first saw her in Elder Su's class, she approached us for help and her insights have since proven invaluable. Descended from a destroyed clan, on her mother's side, she's cultivating her grandfather's profound medical art. Her father is a mortal and commoner working for the Ministry and is the one responsible for Suyin's naïve ideals regarding cultivators. Though recent experiences, including the loss of her right eye, have put this belief into question she has resolved to be the change she wished to see. It was through our connection with Suyin and her housemate that we were able to locate our current good fortune of the Argent Vent. She uses an eclectic mix of abilities and elements and is currently training in the medical department.

Su Ling (Early Yellow/Silver)
Suyin's gruff housemate and friend, she is the product of "a hungry fox deciding to play with her food" which can be seen in her own fox ears and tail and has caused intense hatred for her spirit mother. A popular target for abuse Ling uses hunting to prop up her innate cultivation techniques with beast cores and elixirs. Ling Qi finds the sharp toothed and scrawny girl somewhat comforting in their similar upbringing. She is baffled by Ling Qi's drive and ambition but has more humble goals, cautious and pragmatic by nature, her kindness was also seen in her plans to seek out and heal the cursed boy from her mission with Ling Qi. She uses a Mountain/Earth sabre art as well as inherited Lake/Fire arts and specialises in production.

Han Jian (Late Yellow/Early Silver)
Our first social link and the guy we sat next to in induction. He's since offered advice and allowed us to join his group for training and in Zhou's test. Considered attractive and one of the few people who can match our height he has been referred to as both a play boy and a slacker though neither are attributes we've personally noted. There seems to be a lot of pressure on him to lead his group of friends and live up to the family reputation, made more difficult by continued troubles with Xiulan. He has a support focus, likely to follow in his father's footsteps as a leader and bound his tiger cub cousin, Heijin.

Fan Yu (Early Yellow/Silver)
Squat and brawny, Fan Yu is the first of Han Jian's friends that we met and the one who we like the least. Lacking in both talent and tact Li Qing doesn't have a very high opinion of him with even Han Jian stating that his parents are the ones who make him make nice with Yu He is engaged to Xiulan and his house has equal standing to Han Jian's. He seems to be loyal to the group and is quick to decry the worth of those he thinks seek entry. Since recognising our own extreme potential he has been less dismissive but he's now somewhat distracted by increasing troubles with Xiulan; he uses a saber and Earth qi.

Gu Xiulan (Mid Yellow/Silver)
Our closest friend in the group, Xiulan is a fiery showboat, both elegant and proper yet blunt of opinion. A child of the sun, her family is a surviving branch of the extinct Lu family and vassal to the Han. She has a low opinion of her betrothed, a dismissive attitude towards Fang and a distant relationship with her housemate but has shown herself to be both possessive and protective of Ling Qi and Han Jian. Xiulan has proven herself a true friend in standing by us through issues with Yu and in combat, going so far as to publically declare us a valuable ally she'd standby against any challenger. This is a stance she's maintained despite insecurities regarding our rapid growth that likely brought to mind having to live in her sister's shadow. She has an affinity for Fire qi.

Han Fang (Early Yellow/Silver)
The last member of the quartet, Fang is Jian's mute hammer wielding cousin. Described as "huge" he's noticeably taller than Qi and double as wide with a bald head and blocky features that makes him seem older than a first year disciple. He is the least known of the group but is a close range fighter that uses Thunder qi. It's also been noticed that he's sent disapproving looks at Xiulan for her opinions on Yu, wary looks at Su Ling and was the only one to only show positive reactions to Ling Qi's rapid advancement.

Sun Liling (Early Green/Bronze)
A princess from the Western Territories and eldest granddaughter of the Scarlet General/Butcher of the West, Sun Liling is only slightly shorter than Ling Qi; with red hair and eyes; three white lines running down her nose and lips; toned muscly limbs and a generous chest. Her casual attitude can be seen in her drawl and the way she slumps in seats and is mirrored in her manner of dress, wearing trousers and ripped sleeves. She's provocative, stopping her punch a hairs breadth from Qi's face to see her reaction; and cares little for restraint, being the least interested in Cai's attempt to create order and not showing any remorse for destroying our house in her battle against Meizhen. Since first asking her to share a house with us and Meizhen she has since been consistently rude, destroyed our house, attempted to overthrow Cai's government and impaled Ling Qi with a spear with the reasons for enmity only growing with time. She uses blood in battle to form weapons and armour that causes aggravated damage. She has a Wood/Blood spirit and some ability in healing with an elemental focus of Wood/Wind/Water.

Lu Feng
The annoyingly pretty second of Liling, Qi has noted he has even shinier hair than Xiulan, something she doesn't appreciate. While not quite at the level of Liling, his delicate features belie his rough nature. He uses support arts as well as metal threads to entangle his foes.

Huang Da (Mid Yellow/Silver)
A seemingly blind noble fond of vivid imagery in his descriptions and nicknames, we first noticed him when his he made an uncomfortable compliment regarding Suyin's hands. Since then he has had stalked her at least once and was only noticed when he confronted us for the Argent Vent. Da noted our affinity for Dark and claimed an attraction, apparently being the first guy to compliment Ling Qi's appearance. After both Qi and Suyin refused to stay with him, he attacked but was beaten back. Since then he's seemed more firm in his attraction toward us, even going so far as to help Su Ling and Li Suyin in order to gain our favour. He also seems particularly hostile to Ji Rong and fought against him alongside Xuan Shi during the rebellion. For unknown reasons he's since been instructed by his family to cease his poor attempts at seduction. He uses a sickle, some sort of poison art and is highly skilled in stealth, also likely has an affinity for Dark qi.

Ji Rong (Mid Yellow/Silver)
A scarred commoner significant in his remarkable talent and in that he murdered a cultivator while mortal. He hasn't been known to have any friends but he's gaining admirers and isn't short for enemies. Zihao went out of his way to insult him but Da took particular offence at mention of the murder, Rong's surprise at agreeing with a Huang suggests that this enmity is mutual and may mean that his murder victim was a Huang. He is talented in unarmed combat and uses cestus. Rong was imprisoned in a formation by Xuan Shi, as punishment for "insult to Lady Cai". Since escaping he joined Sun Liling in her rebellion against Cai's government and stuck with her while others, including his friend Chu Song, left. He's once again found himself caught in Cai's grasp.

Kang Zihao (Late Yellow/Silver)
Zihao is a scion of the Kang family which is prominent in the capital and currently favoured by the Empress, with his father being the head of the Palace Guard. Despite the position being of some renown it has high turnover. Zihao gained our enmity through his actions in setting up an ambush for Meizhen while she was wounded, going so far as to attack Ling Qi to better his chances. He has shown little honour or sincerity, happily using numbers to his advantage and rebelling alongside Sun Liling. He has been referred to as good looking and wields a spear.

Cai Renxiang (Early Green/Bronze)
A handsome and sharp faced girl as well as the daughter and heiress of the province's Duchess. She is a third generation Cultivator with her family gaining in prominence due to her mother, Cai Shenhua, being the youngest White Cultivator in the Empire. She is severe but honourable and heads the government that creates order in the stead of the Truce. She interfered when Zihao personally involved himself in his ambush of Ling Qi and Bai Meizhen. She uses a saber and an art that causes her to glow brightly. She seems to have become Meizhen's second friend and has offered Ling Qi a place as her vassal once she reaches Third Realm.

Gan Guangli (Late Yellow/Silver)
The large blond second of Cai Renxiang, Gan Guangli appears to be a loud but friendly, polite and honourable. His art let's him grow in size and strength as the battle continues or when he grows angry. He is extremely devoted to Renxiang.

Xuan Shi
Shi is a large blocky featured formation expert of the Savage Seas province. He has unique eyes with dark grey sclera and grey/green irises. Qi has only heard him speak in vague but extravagant manner. Loyal to Cai Renxiang, he stands with her government. He was a potential betrothal candidate of Bai Meizhen's as a child but is now, apparently, infatuated with Cai. He is descended from a Xuanwu.

Fu Xiang (Peak Yellow/Silver)
A short bespectacled boy, Fu Xiang's role in Cai's council is the representative of the previous year's outer disciples' interests. Using what seems to be a divination art, he is also something of an information broker. A position useful to Qi as she's gained the reputation of the council's more subtle hand. He is on the production track.

Chu Song (Early Green/Bronze)
An elder outer sect disciple that's taken Ji Ron under wing, Chu Song is described as a formidable lady and ruffian. She appears to hold herself to a standard of honour but has an intense hatred for Cai Shenhua, and subsequently her daughter, for the destruction of the Chu in her rise to power in the Emerald Seas.

Gu Yanmei
Yanmei is Xiulan's highly talented sister and rising star of her house. She's only 22 years old but is a fourth stage cultivator and is already being considered for a position as a core sect disciple.

Ruan Shen
A ruan playing Senior Brother that tutored Ling Qi in Forgotten Veil Melody and Expression, Shen is mysterious and flirtatious but he inspired Qi to practice music for the love of it as well as a means to an end.

Bao Qingling
Qingling is a medicine hall disciple that Suyin assists as training to become an official assistant. A tall and lanky third realm cultivator, Qingling is curt and cold but she's professional, talented and appreciative of Suyin's competence.

Ling Qingge
Qingge is a sex worker who always tried to guide her daughter, Ling Qi, towards more feminine pursuits and behaviour making her fear she'd be pushed into/trapped in the same work and uncomfortable in her own lack of femininity. Since running away four years ago Ling Qi saw her mother once and she didn't appear to be doing well but Qi's now sent her silver and a letter to re-establish contact though the response was somewhat cryptic. The sect appears to have records of her.

Ling Biyu
Biyu is Qi's younger half-sister and, along with her age, a major factor in the ending of Qingge's employment.

Dong Fu
The driver that brought Ling Qi to the sect and advised she be respectful and find friends stating, "you can't watch your back all the time". He wore a unique wide brimmed hat upon which hung paper slips covered in unknown symbols that concealed his face.

Hong Lin
Lin is Huang Da's fiancée. She attacked us after rumours circulated about us and Da. Apparently since Da is not a valid target she attacks his "toys" when he would "flit about from one girl to another". She's also in the advanced physical cultivation class and has been rewarded Qi Foundation Pills at least once. She uses guai.

Zhu Qing
Qing is the female twin from Zhou's test. We took and sold her staff before taking it again later when she came after Xiulan and Qi for revenge. Wood aligned.

Zhu Fong
Fong is the male twin from Zhou's test. He uses paired sabers. Wind aligned.

Lei Qing
A girl who Xiulan blinded in Zhou's test and that the twins wanted to avenge. Ice aligned.

Xu Jia
The girl Suyin singled out as the main aggressor in the assault she lost her eye and house. Suyin has since overcome her in battle but she and her more powerful elder sister may still be cause problems in future.

Elder Sima Jiao
Jiao was the speaker at our induction event and head of the Talisman department. A tall, thin, hairless (clean shaven including his eyebrows) and somewhat quirky man, Jiao wears ostentatious clothing, has little tact and is somewhat capricious, often doing things simply for his own amusement. Jiao has a connection to Moon Spirit and is the retired director of the Ministry of Integrity. He has shown interest in possibly making Ling Qi his personal disciple.

Elder Hua Su
Su is the teacher of spiritual arts and head of the Medicinal department. She has grey hair done in a bun, a short and stocky build and an elderly demeanour but an ageless face. In teaching she is matronly and helpful but strict.

Elder Guan Zhou
Zhou the Indomitable is the instructor for physical cultivation and a merciless and proud part of the army. As such he has mainly martial focus and little time for soft cultivators. He is a tall man with even hair placed in a top knot, a stern face with a square jaw and biceps the size of a man's thigh... muscles.

Elder Ying
The elder responsible for the defences of the outer sect and mortal realm below and whose tutelage Meizhen recently won for a month. Meizhen finds her... interesting. She specialises in area defence effects and perception arts.

Sect Leader Yuan He
Yuan He is the leader of the Argent Peak Sect and the cultivator that vanquished the Great Khan Ogodei during the reign of Emperor Si.

The founding families
The Mu, who are the current imperial family, the Bai, the Xuan and the Zheng are the only remaining clans from those that formed the Empire under the Sage Emperor. The Lu were also a founding clan, of which the Gu are an offshoot.

The ruling families
Of the eight provinces the Interior Provinces are Thousand Lakes, Ebon Rivers and Heavenly Peaks which are ruled by the Bai, the Zheng and the Imperial family, respectively. The Border Provinces are ruled by the Sun, the Jin, the Guo and the Cai with the Western territories; Alabaster Sands, to the North; Golden Fields, to the East; and Emerald Seas, to the South, being their respective Provinces. The Xuan rule an island chain to the far North called Savage Seas.

Empress Xiang
The current Empress has sat on the throne for the past 43 years and is the daughter of the previous ruler. The hold on Mount Tai's spirit stones is a major contributor of this dynasty's power. She is a Prism cultivator.

Emperor An
Father of Xiang as well as the ascended Inexorable Justice, An was the first Minister of Integrity under his father's reign. An was also just starting his reign when Shao succeeded in conquering the West and he rewarded him and sided against the Bai in their conflict.

Emperor Si
Father of An, Si was the Emperor in power when the West invaded by Sun Shao.

Sage Emperor
Founder of the empire, the Sage united the various tribal Kings and Queens that ruled the lands that now make up the Imperial provinces. The Sage Emperor was apparently killed in peace meetings with the Queen of the western jungles but his blood lives on in most noble families.

Lu Guanxi
Lu Guanxi is the imperial hero that defeated the Twilight King and his abominations though destroyed much of the Golden Fields in the process. Hailing from one of the founding families of the emperor the "sun's fall" that devastated the prosperous Province was likely the awakening of a Sublime Ancestor.

The Great Khan Ogodei
Ogodei was a cloud tribesman that united the warring cloud tribes under one banner and managed to rampage through two provinces. Ogodei was killed in battle by Yuan He.

Cai Shenhua
The youngest current White stage cultivator with her breakthrough occurring at 50, she is also the Duchess of the Emerald Sea province where the story takes place and Renxiang's mother. As the daughter of a first generation cultivator she is of particular interest as an example of what can be achieved with the right talent and drive, with her current ability allowing her to claim her title as well as live her life without criticism regarding her sexual preference, after the birth of her daughter and her husband disappeared to a quiet country villa. The first cultivator in her family was her father and she uses a saber.

Sun Shao
King of the Western territories, called the Butcher of the West and the Scarlet General he's also the grandfather of Sun Liling. There is bad blood between the west and interior provinces. He was the vassal of the Bai but after having his castle burnt and family killed by barbarians he convinced other dissatisfied vassals to join him in conquering the West in a campaign that stretched beyond the limits permitted by his liege lord, Bai Fuxi. After succeeding in his campaign he was pardoned and declared just in his actions and managed to defeat and kill Fuxi when he attempted to go against that decision and personally punish his old vassal.

Bai Fuxi
The patriarch of the Bai clan during the subjugation of the West, Bai Fuxi was later killed by his old vassal Shao when he attempted to punish him for overstepping his authority in his campaign, though this was done without the backing of the Emperor.

Bai Meilien
An executed member of the Bai clan, mention of her death was used to taunt Meizhen into fighting at the end of the Thunderdome

Bai Suzhen
Suzhen is Meizhen's aunt and the authority figure she is closest to in her clan. She has an affinity for Metal qi and bears the clan's hope for a White stage cultivator.

To clarify, the leading vote does not have Ling Qi sell the vent. It specifies that she gets no profit from it. In the vote, Ling Qi asks if Suyin and Ling would be interested in giving access to our other friends in exchange for resources.
Just because she doesn't get a profit from it herself doesn't mean she isn't the one doing the selling. Giving access in return for money is called selling.

The rest of his post is quite clear that he understands that the profit will go to Su and Li. That is not his issue with the proposal.

Oh my God. The noble group does not give a shit about our other friends. The only reason they'll not just up and take the vent for themselves is us. The sheer amount of hostility this will generate is incredibly obvious. Do not hint about the vent to anybody, for fucks sake.

The Bai younglings were sent out to seek conciliation though?

Hmm, I forgot how long is the mandatory study time with the Sect? Meizhen has that long to seek some concessions with her peers.

She does not have to gain alliance of every single noble family that sends a progeny into Argent Sect, but if she could manage that, it would have been a coup of major proportion. Still, the Bai clan probably expects her to seek...

Actually, I would need to re-read that portion of the political info-dump. What exactly were they seeking? Alliance? Concession to being embargo-ed? Stop hating snakes? Political bedfellows to backstabbing the Empress? Trade partners?

Concession not conciliation

The bai younglings were dispersed among the various sects, most likely so they would be alone and easy targets for crippling.

It was not conciliation (something you do to repair relationship), it was a concession (something you give up against your will to a superior opponent) forced upon them

No he put "convincing" in scare quotes to suggest Ling Qi will just pressure them into agreeing like some bully.

No because if they try we and Meizhen will kick their asses, who cares about "hostility" as long as they keep up their end of the bargain?. It's also Suyin and Su Ling's decision on if we should go ahead with it so if they think they can handle the "hostility" or don't care I don't see why we should prevent them from doing this out of some attempt to "protect them from themselves".

Can I convince you to switch to Social Animal?

First, you seem to not understand what the word No means.
Because you quote me, and then say it, and then go on a completely unrelated tangent.
Whether or not he used scare quotes for the word convincing is irrelevant to what you quoted, which is about the use of the word sell.

Second, he didn't use scare quotes.
those in favor of "convincing Li Suyin and Su Ling to sell the vent's location" have convinced me
^Normal quotes
nobody said:

^scare quotes

Third, there is nothing wrong with using scare quotes. They have a scary name but are completely valid rhetorical tool

Y'know if people insist on saying we don't have the social skills to pull off sharing the vent then why don't they just write omakes/draw art and put the points into our social attributes/skills?
